Ground Breaking Ceremony Held For New Senior Living Complex Coming To South Suburbs Continued from page 1

A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held at the southeast corner of Lincoln Highway and Ridgeland Avenue in Matteson to celebrate the start of construction on a new upscale senior living development. The Mayor of the Village of Matteson, Sheila Chalmers-Currin, was joined by elected officials, residents, and members of the development team who all spoke about their excitement for this greatly needed project.

Alexi Development, a family-owned real estate development and construction firm, is leading the project that will be built on the 13-acre lot.

“I work with a lot of senior groups and every day I hear stories about how many baby

boomers are reaching 60 years old and housing for them is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed. I commend the Village of Matteson and Mayor Chalmers-Currin for looking into and addressing the housing needs of seniors because this will be a challenge going forward in the 21st century. It’s very exciting to be here at the beginning of new housing in Matteson for our seniors,” said Illinois State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin.

The first phase of the project will include a total of 75 one or two bedroom units with 55 units being Standard Assisted Living Apartments and 20 units being Memory Care apartments.

“We are so proud to be here today. It has been a long time coming and we are extremely excited about this project. The first building will have 55 assisted living rooms and 20

memory care rooms. The second building will be 52 independent rooms with underground parking. We plan on being here for a while, building a beautiful community and complex for the Village and we are centrally located three quarters of a mile from Interstate 57 and Interstate 80, so it’s a great opportunity for everyone and we are really excited about it,” said Tony Vari, president and chief executive officer of Alexi Development.

In addition to the living spaces, there will also be a secured outdoor courtyard space with walking paths, multiple communal living rooms, community rooms, a salon, an activity room, a library, a dining room, a theater, and a bistro for everyone to enjoy.

“Congratulations to the Village of Matteson on this achievement and also in partnering

with a developer to create a great community where I might live one day,” said Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller. “This is such a needed thing in our community and it’s great to see everyone come out to support the economic growth and development of our community not only for this generation but for future generations to come.”

Now that construction has begun, the scheduled opening date is October 15th, 2020 and Mayor Chalmers-Currin said that she has already been receiving calls from residents who are interested in securing their rooms.

“This has been a long time coming and we are excited to have Alexi as part of this partnership. We want to make sure that we bring not only a beautiful facility but also something that is greatly needed,” said Chalmers-Currin.

Wayne Adams Sr., also known as The Voice of Raceway Park in Calumet Park, recently turned 100 years old and to honor his legacy, the Mayor of the Village of Dolton, Riley Rogers, renamed Parkside Avenue as Wayne Adams Way. The renaming ceremony was held on Adams’ 100th birthday and several of his family members, south suburban residents, and elected officials came out to celebrate.

For 56 years, Adams has lived in the Village of Dolton and made a name for himself as an announcer at Raceway Park from 1947 through 1989. During that time, he announced over 2000 midget and stock car racing events and was also a writer for the Illustrated Speedway News where he covered racing in the Chicago area.

“I don’t know what to say. This is such an honor and something I never expected. I can only thank the Mayor and the Trustees in Dolton and all my neighbors. We’ve been in Dolton for 56 years and the only thing that bothers me is that I just wish my wife, Grace, were here,” said Adams.

Adams and his wife Grace were married in 1942 and had four children together that they raised in the Village of Dolton. Grace Adams passed away in 2016.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners

issued a resolution that detailed Adams’ background including the story of how he and his late wife came to be married, how he was drafted into the military during World War II, became a decorated war veteran, and was inducted into four different racing hall of fames for his announcing career at Raceway Park.

During the street renaming ceremony, Mayor Rogers read parts of the Cook County Board’s resolution which stated, “Be it resolved that the President and the members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners proudly honor Mr. Wayne Adams Sr. for his amazing life and career and his service to this county, to the community, and Cook County.”

During the ceremony, Adams pleased the crowd by giving his traditional Raceway Park welcome one more time.

“If you ever arrived at Raceway Park before the races got started you might have heard me say this, ‘good evening ladies and gentlemen this is Wayne Adams welcoming you to Raceway Park the worlds busiest track,’” said Adams.

Adams retired from announcing in 1989 and was inducted into the National Old Timers Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1988, the Grundy County Speedway Hall of Fame in 2004, The Illinois Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2012, and the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2014.

New Research in JNCCN Touts Ice Chips as a Simple, Inexpensive Way to Reduce a Common Chemotherapy Side Effect A new study in the April 2019 issue of JNCCN—Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network from the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania found that cancer patients who kept ice chips in their mouths (termed ‘oral cryothera-

How Hispanics really feel about Trump

For the first time in history, Hispanic voters are expected to be the largest minority group in the 2020 electorate, according to the Pew Research Center.

With his reelection on the line, it’s no surprise that President Donald Trump is publicly courting Hispanics. In fact, in late January, he touted a poll he claimed showed his support among Hispanics had risen from 19% to 50%, due to his immigration policies.

However, these rosy statistics are misleading, since the poll was not designed to gauge Hispanic voters’ opinions. It did not poll many Hispanics and did not ask questions in both English and Spanish.

As researchers who regularly examine public opinion, we know it’s a stretch to conclude that half of Hispanics approve of Trump, let alone suggest that a majority back his proposed immigration policies.

However, given their potential electoral impact, it is important to understand how Hispanics really feel about President Trump and how their opinions vary across party lines. We have done the work to try to answer these questions.

Hispanics on Trump We analyzed the results of a University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll fielded by Nielsen Scarborough from Oct. 24 to Nov. 16, 2018. The survey was conducted among a

nationally representative sample of 600 Hispanics, and it asked questions in both English and Spanish.

Simultaneously, we also fielded a national poll of 1,300 respondents representing all Americans. That allowed us to confidently analyze Hispanics’ opinions and compare them to other Americans.

Here’s what we found.

No, most Hispanic voters don’t back Trump and his policies. In fact, Hispanics oppose his immigration policies in larger numbers than the rest of the population.

For example, right before the 2018 midterm election, we asked respondents to identify the most important factor in their vote choice. Among Hispanics, the most popular choice was “a vote against President Trump and his agenda,” with 39% of Hispanics selecting this option, compared to 32% of non-Hispanics.

However, Hispanic preferences do diverge across partisan lines.

Over half of Hispanics who aren’t Republicans said “a vote against President Trump and his agenda” was their main reason for voting.

Conversely, 45% of Hispanic Republicans chose “a vote to support President Trump and his agenda” as the most important reason for their vote – a significant number, but still lower than the number of non-Hispanic Republicans who said the same.

Thoughts on immigration Attitudes toward the president’s immigration policies were also striking.

We asked respondents, “Would you say immigration helps the U.S. more than it hurts it, or immigration hurts the U.S. more than it helps it?” Just over half of Hispanics said that immigration helps the U.S.

more than it hurts it. Meanwhile, 35% of non-Hispanics said the same.

On the question of immigrants who immigrated illegally, more than two-thirds of Hispanic respondents reported that “illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and obtain citizenship,” compared to just 54% of non-Hispanics.

Hispanics are also much less likely to believe that undocumented immigrants commit more crimes than American citizens.

We asked respondents about their opinions regarding the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the border. Only 16% of Hispanics see this policy as acceptable, compared to 25% of non-Hispanics.

Hispanics are not monolithic.

When it comes to immigration, they are divided strongly across partisan lines. For example, 57% of Hispanic non-Republicans say that immigration helps the U.S. Only 34% of Hispanic Republicans say the same.

What’s more, Hispanic non-Republicans are almost twice as likely as Hispanic Republicans to say that “illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and obtain citizenship.”

However, Hispanic Republicans are still more likely to take positions that are pro-immigration than Republicans who aren’t Hispanic. For example, 40% of Hispanic Republicans agree that “illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. and obtain citizenship.” The same

is true for just 29% of Republicans who aren’t Hispanic.

Looking ahead to 2020 Even if Trump were able to increase his support among Hispanic Republicans, this would not be enough to secure 50% approval of all Hispanic voters.

That’s because in our poll, a majority of Hispanics align themselves with the Democratic Party. Roughly one-quarter of Hispanics identify as Republican.

Similarly, a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center in October 2018 found that 62 percent of Hispanics identify as Democrats.

These findings confirm that Hispanics have relatively negative attitudes towards President Trump and his immigration policies.

It’s hard for us to see a path for Trump to be competitive among Hispanics in the 2020 election without reaching across partisan lines, something that we believe is unlikely to happen. Despite the partisan divide among Hispanics, Trump’s positions on immigration, overall, work against him with this group.

Legislation Adding Transparency and Protections for Illinoisans Digital Privacy Advances in State Senate and House of Representatives Two important pieces of consumer protection legislation have advanced on separate tracks through the Illinois State Senate and House of Representatives. Senate Bill 1719, better known as the Keep Internet Devices Safe or KIDS Act, passed out of the Illinois Senate with bi-partisan support. The bill, sponsored by State Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Elgin) protects the privacy and physical safety of Illinois citizens from the risks posed - particularly those to children - by internet-connected devices’ use of microphones that listen and collect our most personal information.

“The legislation we passed is an important step towards protecting the digital privacy of Illinoisans by arming citizens with more information about the technology we use every day. We have a right to know if and when companies are listening to our conversations.

I applaud my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle who put consumers first and voted to pass the KIDS Act,” said Sen. Castro.

The vote took place on the heels of last week’s disturbing report by Bloomberg News that Amazon employees listen in on personal conversations to help the voice-activated assistant to better respond to commands.

“These devices don’t just magically collect information and learn by themselves. Human beings are listening on the other end to sometimes personal and sensitive information and the public has a right to know that in clear and transparent terms,” said Digital Privacy Alliance Director Matt Erickson.

The KIDS Act was created as a result of an FBI warning asking parents to be more cautious when utilizing Internet- connected devices in their homes. The message raised concerns for

kids’ privacy, physical safety, and warned of the increased opportunity for child identity fraud because of personal information being collected through the microphones of these devices.

“Big tech firms have demonstrated time and again that they are not responsible stewards of our data. At a very minimum, consumers deserve to know when apps and internet connected devices are listening to us and our family’s conversations,” said Illinois PIRG Director, Abe Scarr.

While SB1719 passed the senate 39-14, the Illinois House overwhelmingly approved HB3358, the Data Transparency and Privacy Act, which requires companies that operate websites and online services to be transparent about the types of personal information they collect. The bill, sponsored by State Representative Art Turner (D-Chicago), also gives Illinois citizens the ability to request what categories of their personal

information were disclosed, the categories and number of the companies they were disclosed to, and allows Illinois consumers to opt-out of having their personal information sold.

“The bill is simple. Companies that collect and sell Illinois citizens’ data should at least tell us what they’re doing and give us an option to opt-out. Companies should want to be transparent so that they can start to rebuild consumer trust,” said House Assistant Majority Leader Art Turner. “I’m proud of my fellow legislators on both sides of the aisle who voted to take this step to protect Illinois citizens’ online privacy.”

“Illinois has a great opportunity to continue to be the leader in protecting online consumer privacy. The Digital Privacy Alliance and its members applaud the efforts of Senator Castro, Representative Turner their colleagues who voted for these important measures,” added Erickson.

“Bringing Down the House” is the free program that helps underserved youth, ages 14-20, navigate the music industry, learn business strategies and develop the knowledge and confidence for a career in the industry. NEWS Illinois Unemployment Rate Up Slightly in March The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) recently announced that the unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in March, up +0.1 percentage point from the prior month, and nonfarm payrolls were down -2,800 jobs over-the-month based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The February jobs loss was revised downward from the preliminary report (from -12,600 to -10,800 jobs).

Average payroll employment growth during the January to March three-month period was +4,400 jobs, with the largest gains in Manufacturing (+1,700), Professional and Business Services (+1,300) and Educational and Health Services (+1,100).

“This administration has begun the hard work of restoring fiscal sanity to our state so that we can build a thriving economy for all Illinoisans,” said Deputy Governor Dan Hynes.

“Governor Pritzker laid out a bold agenda that protects working families and makes the long-term investments needed to grow good-paying jobs in this state.”

“Governor Pritzker has made training and preparing the workforce for the jobs of tomorrow a priority and I am excited to work with him on achieving that goal,” said Erin Guthrie, Acting Director of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

In March, the industry sectors with the largest over-the-month gains in employment were: Manufacturing (+1,400), Financial Activities (+1,400), Leisure and Hospitality (+1,200) and Other Services (+1,200). The industry sectors with the largest payroll declines were: Professional and Business

Services (-4,200), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-3,000) and Construction (-1,600).

Over-the-year, nonfarm payroll employment increased by +47,400 jobs with the largest gains in these industry sectors in March: Education and Health Services (+14,000), Manufacturing (+9,000), and Professional and Business Services (+8,400).

The industry sectors with over-the-year declines were: Construction (-4,700), Information (-2,900) and Mining (-200). Illinois nonfarm payrolls were up +0.8 percent over-the-year as compared to the nation’s +1.7 percent over-the-year gain in March.

The state’s unemployment rate is +0.6 percentage points higher than the national unemployment rate reported for March 2019, which remained at 3.8 percent. The Illinois unemployment rate is up +0.1 percentage point from a year ago when it was 4.3 percent.

The number of unemployed workers increased from the prior month, +1.1 percent to 284,400, and was up +1.3 percent over the same month for the prior year. The labor force was about unchanged over-the-month but was up +0.1 percentage point over-the-year. The unemployment rate identifies those individuals who are out of work and are seeking employment.

An individual who exhausts or is ineligible for benefits is still reflected in the unemployment rate if they actively seek work. To help connect jobseekers to employers who are hiring, IDES’ maintains the state’s largest job search engine, IllinoisJoblink.com (IJL), which recently showed 62,954 posted resumes with 98,957 jobs available.

Sims: Voting should be accessible to everyone, including students A plan to give students time off from school to vote passed out of the Senate recently.

State Senator Elgie R. Sims Jr. (D-Chicago) spearheaded the effort to encourage youth voting after students at one of his local schools were not allowed to participate in a “March to the Polls” event during school hours. “This effort is intended to help and encourage our young people to understand the importance of voting early on. We should make voting easy and accessible for everyone all across Illinois, including our students,” Sims said.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is working with local health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Carrau linked to pre-cut melon.

Caito Foods, LLC recalled pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and pre-cut fruit medley. For a full list of where the recalled fruit was sold, check the FDA’s website. The recalled pre-cut melons were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed to multiple stores, including independent retailers, so it is important to look at the label and brand information to identify the recalled product.

According to the CDC, 93 cases in nine states have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from March, 4, 2019, to March, 31, 2019.

In Illinois, five cases have been reported in the north-eastern and eastern part of the state. However, IDPH is still tracing where the melons were distributed in Illinois so people could potentially be exposed across the state.

Cases in Illinois have reported eating melon and becoming ill from mid- to late-March. IDPH is working with local

health departments to identify additional cases and to perform laboratory testing.
