South Suburban Students Win Big At County Robotics Competition Continued from page 1

Several students from Chicago Heights School District 170’s Wilson Elementary School recently competed in the Unit Six 4H STEMbot Challenge at Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields. The students call themselves the Wilson Warriors and were tasked with building and programming a robot to solve real-life Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) problems.

The Wilson Warriors competed against robotics teams from several other schools in Cook County and were able to earn the championship title along with trophies in the categories of Robot Design and Programming.

With the leadership of their coach, Joseph

Freiders, the Wilson Warriors designed, built, and programmed two Lego robots that were able to solve real-life STEM problems.

“I am so very proud of our team’s effort, and especially so because our team continues to build on past successes,” said Frieders. “Each year, at every competition, our team continues to impress everyone with their commitment and talent, and represents our district with dignity and outstanding behavior.”

Now that the team has taken home this win, they will go on to compete at the 2019 Illinois 4H STEMbot Challenge at the McLean County Fairgrounds’ Interstate Center in Bloomington, Illinois on May 11.

The Illinois State Robotics Competition gives young people who are enrolled in Illinois 4-H robotics programs the oppor-

tunity to compete and show what they have learned along with giving them a chance to interact with their state-wide peers. Many schools in Illinois have robotics clubs and this contest is meant to test their knowledge and their ability to work as a team, according to the Illinois 4-H State Robotics Competition’s website.

At the state competition, the Wilson Warriors will be asked to once again demonstrate their ability to design and program a robot that can accomplish tasks through the use of gears, levers, and other machine functions.

They will be judged on their programming knowledge, their ability to work as a team, and their robot’s field performance.

Last year, the Wilson Warriors competed in the state competition and came in 15th place.

This year, they are hoping to do better.

The robotics program is just one part of Illinois’ robust 4H curriculum which is designed to prepare young people to creatively solve our state’s problems by giving them the life skills and tools they will need to become innovators and entrepreneurs. At its core, 4H is an agriculture program but over time it has been expanded to better equip young people with needed workforce skills and to connect them with mentors, according to the Illinois 4H website.

Illinois 4H decided to focus on STEM for this year’s Robotics Challenge because careers in the STEM field are growing at a rapid rate and they want to prepare students with the knowledge and the skills they will need to compete for those jobs.

District 148 educators, parents gather at Regional Conference TINLEY PARK – Administrators, educators, School Board Members and parents came together recently to discuss public education issues and trends in the south suburbs.

Dolton West School District 148 was well represented at the Annual Regional Conference “Transforming the Paradigm of Educating Children” in Tinley Park.

The two-day conference on March 21-22, 2019 was hosted by the Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Demographics and

Diversity. A parent component was attended by several District 148 parents on March 21, 2019.

Administrators and School Board representatives on hand included Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin J. Nohelty, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Patricia Moore, Director of Research and Innovation John Donermeyer, School Board Secretary Kim Adkins and Board Member Charles Lloyd.

Michelle Obama is a surprise textbook example of how women thrive and grow through adulthood

Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” can be read in many ways: as a political memoir, as a story of being black and aspiring in America or as a Cinderella story that transports an ambitious black girl from a 900-square-foot apartment to a home with “132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and 28 fireplaces spread out over six floors, and a staff of ushers, florists, housekeepers, butlers and attendants for her every need.”

As a psychologist who tries to better understand the course of women’s growth throughout adulthood, I was surprised to see that it can also be read as an illustration of how women ideally evolve. For decades, psychologists have relied on psychologist Erik Erikson’s theoretical model of the stages of life, a model based on how men develop that largely overlooks women.

en’s lives to remedy this gap, most recently publishing “Paths to Fulfillment: Women’s Search for Meaning and Identity.” I followed 26 randomly chosen college-educated women from ages 21 to 58. They came from large cities, small towns and rural areas. Some were the first of their families to go to college, and many struggled with early poverty and abuse. All married at some point

in their lives, and just over half of them had children. Most cultivated some kind of profession; others simply “worked.” In analyzing their lives, I offer a way of thinking about women’s life journeys that depicts the stages of adulthood for those who surmount the challenges they encounter.

Michelle Robinson Obama, despite living an extraordinary life, exemplifies the optimal path of development I found among my “ordinary” women. In contrast to Erikson’s male life stages, I learned that relationships to others are central for women’s development in adulthood. Candid about her inner life, Michelle titles her life chapters “Becoming Me,” “Becoming Us” and “Becoming More,” which map perfectly with the psychological stages of identity, intimacy and care – the eras I identified in women’s B:10.75” lives. In that sense, Michelle Obama T:10.75” represents “Everywoman.”

‘Becoming Me’ – the challenge of identity Like the women I followed, Michelle found her fulfillment in ways very different from what she had expected. As a young girl, she had modest aspirations: a family, a dog and “a house that had stairs in it – two floors for one family.”

Optimal identity formation involves exploring possibilities, reworking the goals of childhood and forging one’s own path. Michelle Robinson set her sights on becoming a successful lawyer, emulating the people she had observed in downtown Chicago, “in smart outfits” and moving with purpose. Dogged through her adolescence and early adulthood by the question “Am I good enough?,” becoming a Harvard-degreed corporate lawyer showed her that she was.

Her identity crisis came when she recognized she didn’t really want the life she’d achieved. She felt empty practicing law. Taking

a big occupational risk, she found that working in public service or for nonprofit organizations felt like doing something for a larger good.

Identity – “becoming me” – came from achieving her goals and then taking on what she expressed as the “universal challenge of squaring who you are with where you come from and where you want to go.”

Like Michelle Obama, women in my study often realized, in their 30s, that their initial choices were not what fit them. Generationally, they were among the first to penetrate meaningfully into the work world where opportunities for self-realization were opening. They could become judges or take on management roles. They could leave social work and become teachers for more family-friendly hours. They could, like Michelle, think seriously about what suited them and change course.

They could create their own identity.

To commemorate National School Library Month, Congresswoman Robin Kelly recently delivered 120 books to Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School’s library through the Library of Congress’ Surplus Book Program and personally congratulated teacher Catherine Ross-Cook on winning a 2019 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

“H-F students impressed me. They are engaged in their school, civically aware and eager to test out new ideas and innovations.

This is in large part due to outstanding teachers, like Ms. Ross-Cook, who deservedly received a Golden Apple Award,” said Congresswoman Kelly. “The United States

is known for its ingenuity and innovation, and we have that innovation right here in the Second District. It did not surprise me to learn that our donated books were already on display in the library and have been checked out by students.”

H-F received books that included biographies, fiction, folklore, poetry and science.

Since taking office, Rep. Kelly has donated more than 3,000 books to schools and libraries throughout the 2nd District, from Chicago’s South Side to the South Suburbs and across Kankakee and Will Counties.

The Library of Congress donates surplus books to schools, libraries and non-profits

through Members of Congress. Previous schools that have received books from Congresswoman Kelly through this program include Sandridge Elementary School in Lynwood, Douglas Taylor Elementary School in Chicago, Creative Communications Academy in Calumet City, Strassburg Elementary School in Sauk Village, LaVasseur Elementary School in Bourbonnais, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Markham, and Crete-Monee High School in Crete.

The Congresswoman regularly contacts schools within her district to introduce the program. Schools expressing an interest receive age-appropriate books.

CMS finalizes policies to bring innovative telehealth benefit to Medicare Advantage The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized policies that will increase plan choices and benefits, including allowing Medicare Advantage plans to include additional telehealth benefits.

These policies continue the agency’s efforts to modernize the Medicare Advantage and Part D programs, unleash innovation and drive competition to improve quality among private Medicare health and drug plans.

“Today’s policies represent a historic step in bringing innovative technology to Medicare beneficiaries,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “With these new telehealth benefits, Medicare Advantage enrollees will be able to access the latest technology and have greater access to telehealth. By providing greater flexibility to Medicare Advantage plans, beneficiaries can receive more benefits, at lower costs and better quality.”

The final policies announced recently leverage new authorities provided to CMS in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which President Trump signed into law last year.

CMS is finalizing changes that would allow Medicare Advantage beneficiaries to access additional telehealth benefits, starting in plan year 2020.

These additional telehealth benefits offer patients the option to receive health care services from places like their homes, rather than requiring them to go to a healthcare facility.

Before this year, seniors in Original Medicare could only receive certain telehealth services if they live in rural areas. Starting this year, Original Medicare began paying for virtual check-ins across

the country, meaning patients can connect with their doctors by phone or video chat.

Historically, Medicare Advantage plans have been able to offer more telehealth services, compared to Original Medicare, as part of their supplemental benefits. But with the final rule, it will be more likely that plans will offer the additional telehealth benefits outside of supplemental benefits, expanding patients’ access to telehealth services from more providers and in more parts of the country than before, whether they live in rural or urban areas.

CMS is also finalizing changes that will make improvements to Medicare Advantage and Part D Star Ratings so that consumers can identify high-value plans.

The final rule updates the methodology for calculating Star Ratings, which provide information to consumers on plan quality. The new Star Ratings methodology will improve the stability and predictability for plans, and will adjust how the ratings are set in the event of extreme and uncontrollable events such as hurricanes.

The final rule will improve the quality of care for beneficiaries dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid who participate in “Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans” or D-SNPs. These beneficiaries usually have complex health needs and if they have a complaint about their healthcare or about access to items and services, they have to work with multiple organizations, one responsible for Medicare benefits and another responsible for Medicaid benefits, in order to file an appeal. The final rule will create one appeals process across Medicare and Medicaid, which will make it easier for enrollees

in certain D-SNPs to navigate the healthcare system and have access to high quality services.

The final rule will also require plans to more seamlessly integrate Medicare and Medicaid benefits across the two programs, such as notifying the state Medicaid agency (or its designee) of hospital and skilled nursing facility admissions for certain high-risk beneficiaries, to promote coordination of care for these patients.

The recent announcement builds on the 2020 Rate Announcement and Final Call Letter released earlier that gives Medicare Advantage plans flexibility to offer chronically ill patients a broader range of supplemental benefits that are not necessarily health related and can address social determinants of health.

With these new telehealth and supplemental benefits, Medicare Advantage plans will have the flexibility to provide a historic set of offerings to beneficiaries.

Medicare Advantage plans will be able to compete for patients based on their new offerings and overall cost.

CMS is working to update the Medicare Plan Finder with these new choices, so that beneficiaries will be able to see their new choices and benefits and can pick the plans that work best for them.

IDOT Picks Winners Of Sign Contest The Illinois Department of Transportation is recognizing six members of the public for their creative ideas to improve safety as part of the department’s digital message sign contest. More than 1,400 entries were submitted in six categories.

“Millions of drivers see our digital signs each year, so they are an important tool for heightened safety awareness on our roads,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.

“With more than 1,000 traffic fatalities last year, the public’s messages could be the difference between life and death.”

The six winners will receive a decorative, personalized street sign. Their messages will be in rotation on approximately 100 overhead dynamic message signs statewide in 2019.

Like many of them, Michelle chose her mate after a period of developing friendship rather than initial passion.

Once married, she then had the challenge of aligning her goals with his – which were far from her dream of recreating the close, warm family she’d grown up in. Michelle disdained politics and resented Barack’s time away from the family. She refused to uproot her children and move to Washington when he was a senator. Out of love, she supported Barack’s presidential run, but didn’t think he would win and, in some ways, hoped he wouldn’t.

Intimacy was leading her on a path she would never have chosen.

Many of the women in my study followed similar trajectories although, of course, on a smaller scale. One woman, Betty, had to readjust her goals as a physical

therapist when her husband made a fortune in real estate and, in their 30s, wanted to retire and spend their time traveling. Maria, a nurse from a traditional Italian American family, had to become the family breadwinner when her husband was physically disabled. Like Michelle, each had to rework her identity to accommodate the unforeseen circumstances of her spouse.

‘Becoming more’ – care Adulthood is about what psychologists call generativity: investing in projects of care. Once situated in the White House, which she partly regarded as a prison, Michelle sought to focus her energies and use her influence for a larger good.

Michelle never internalized the media’s representation of her as a celebrity “rock star.” Instead, her generative need to promote well-being in children through nutrition and exercise were what motivated her - and she used her fame and special status for these ends. She was passionate about being a role model for girls, and she still tried to create

way to care for others – was central in the lives of the most fulfilled woman I have studied. When these women reflect on the meaning of their lives at age 58, teachers describe students who returned to thank them for things they said that changed their lives. A doctor remembers working as a volunteer with AIDS patients. A judge recounts letters she received from claimants who were helped by her decision. A mother spoke of how well her autistic child had done with her efforts to find him support.

Those whose lives had the most meaning were those who felt they’d had impact on the lives of others.

a close family. She writes that one of the best things about her husband being president was that their home was above his office and he could be present for dinner most nights – helping ensure as normal a family life for their daughters as possible.

Others never found the intimacy that could anchor their care.

But those who felt their lives most meaningful at age 58 followed the path that Michelle Obama details. They created themselves,

shared this self deeply with another person and found that they could “become more” by offering themselves to promote others’ well-being.

Of course, this can happen outside the traditional mold of marriage and children – many of the most profound and fulfilling connections my women reported came through their work or other relationships.

Like Michelle Obama, thriving midlife women create themselves in a network of interconnection with other people. They are contributing in some important way to the lives of others. They don’t talk a lot about making money or climbing ladders.

That’s not where their ambition is.

As one of the women I’ve studied put it, “You find yourself by giving yourself away.” For women, and perhaps for men as well, mature identity, intimacy and care develop in the context of relationship, something that psychology is just beginning to understand.
