SPRINGFIELD – Minimum wage workers in Illinois will see a boost in their hourly pay to $12 per hour starting Jan. 1, while tenants in affordable housing units will be allowed to keep pets.

Those are just some of the more than 300 new laws that take effect in the new year.

The Financial Literacy Initiative Paves The Way For Generational Wealth In Lynwood

The minimum wage increase is actually the result of a 2019 law that phases in a state minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. This year, it will increase by one dollar to $12 an hour.

tenants to keep pets is the result of Senate Bill 154, by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. It provides that tenants of multifamily housing units that are acquired, built or renovated with money from the Illinois Affordable Housing Trust Fund may keep up to two cats or one dog weighing less than 50 pounds.

Trustee Cynthia Eaves, a dedicated member of the Lynwood community, has emerged as a beacon of hope for the younger generation through her unwavering commitment to education, financial literacy, and youth empowerment. With a fervent belief in investing in the generations behind her, Trustee Eaves has spearheaded initiatives aimed at nurturing the potential of Lynwood’s youth, ensuring they are equipped with the tools needed for success.

“My Greatest Hope Is To See a Future Engineer, Fire Chief, Or Police Chief Emerge From The Youth I’ve Had The Privilege To Mentor”

It applies to residents of housing units that are designated as affordable housing for low- and very-lowincome families. The bill passed both chambers in its final form on May 30 and Gov. JB Pritzker signed it into law Aug. 6.

Other new laws include:

At the heart of Trustee Eaves’ mission is her profound dedication to education. Recognizing its transformative power, she has tirelessly worked to empower children and teenagers in Lynwood, fostering an environment where innovation and creativity thrive. Her efforts have culminated in the establishment of the Financial Literacy Program, a groundbreaking initiative that aims to instill invaluable financial knowledge in the community’s youth.

ey Smart,” the program covers essential topics such as managing finances, understanding different currencies, and developing multiple streams of income.

Moreover, Trustee Eaves has ensured that the program goes beyond theoretical knowledge by providing students with practical opportunities to apply what they’ve learned. By offering service hours for graduation and encouraging students to open savings accounts, she is laying the foundation for a financially literate and responsible generation.

In addition to her work with the Financial Literacy Program, Trustee Eaves has been instrumental in establishing a Scholarship Fund for Lynwood’s youth heading off to college or trade schools. In its inaugural year, the fund awarded $1,000 to eight senior residents, with the amount increasing to an impressive $11,000 being distributed amongst various students in its second year.

Vehicle taxes: SB58 raises the private vehicle tax, which is a sales tax paid on the purchase of vehicles, by $75 for each model year where the purchase price is less than $15,000 and by $100 for vehicles priced above that amount. However, the registration fee for trailers weighing less than 3,000 pounds will drop to $36 instead of $118.

“I am immensely passionate about the investment we make in the generations behind us. As a proud mother of three, I understand the importance of equipping our youth with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Through programs like the Financial Literacy Program, we are not only teaching them the value of money and investments for generational wealth but also empowering them to become future leaders in our community,” says Trustee Eaves.

The Financial Literacy Program, a brainchild of Trustee Eaves, has seen tremendous success since its inception two years ago. What began as an eight-week program has now evolved into a six-week initiative, with sessions held every Saturday from 9 am to 11 am. Using a rubric lesson plan from “Mon-

FOID card changes: HB562 enacts several changes to the Firearm Owner Identification card law. Among other things, it provides for a streamlined renewal process for FOID cards and Concealed Carry Licenses for people who voluntarily submit fingerprint records. It also allows the Illinois State Police to issue a combined FOID card and Concealed Carry License to qualified applicants, and it establishes a new Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force to take enforcement action against people with revoked FOID cards.

The Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Diversity and Demographics (SCSDD), in partnership with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and Tougaloo College, awarded high school seniors a total of $102,000 of scholarships to enroll in colleges and universities of their choice during a March 21 banquet at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

Looking ahead, Trustee Eaves hopes to see even more students actively participating in these initiatives, leveraging the knowledge and resources available to them to pursue their dreams. Together with Trustee Blakey, she continues to co-chair various efforts aimed at uplifting the community and creating opportunities for its residents.

As Trustee Eaves passionately advocates for the youth of Lynwood, she envisions a future where every child has the chance to thrive and succeed. “My greatest hope is to see a future engineer, fire chief, or police chief emerge from the youth I’ve had the privilege to mentor,” she declares. “I believe that by investing in our youth today, we are laying the groundwork for a brighter tomorrow, where each generation pays it forward to the next.”

AUTHOR/ATTORNEY RON RICHARDSON SHARES THE START OF HIS INSPIRATIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD IN A REMARKABLE RADIO INTERVIEW

BALTIMORE, Md. - Linking personal, contemporary situations and Bible readings, acclaimed Oneness With God author Ronald E. Richardson shares emotional stories about his connection with God and how it dramatically transformed him from the thralls of anguish and depression.

In an impassioned interview with WTKO radio host and President Carol Henry, Richardson describes his state after he and his girlfriend agreed that she should have an abortion and how the aftermath transformed him, propelling him forward as a steadfast devote of God.

“In the early 1980s, I met this young lady. She was also a fellow law student at night,” Richardson recalls in the interview. “She got pregnant, and we both agreed to have an abortion. I did not think much of it at the time, but almost immediately after the abortion, I had this overwhelming conviction. This brought about depression because I felt more and more that I took a life. I had agreed to the taking of a life, an innocent life, and there was no getting that life back.”

Richardson, a Baltimore attorney who recently released an updated version of his 2006 book, Oneness With God, shares more about his theological exploration of the mysteries of God in the interview and why he has faithfully followed this path.

“I felt horrible,” he says of the period after the abortion. “I felt as if my spiritual future was doomed. I no longer desired to complete law school, go to work, or do any of the basic daily functions because, in the end, all was lost. I did not know any way to rectify the situation until I remembered my spiritual upbringing. And I knew that there was this God, and there was Jesus. Eventually, I found myself on my knees in my apartment in desperation. And I pleaded with Jesus that if indeed he does exist, and there is, indeed, the ability to save souls like mine, that I embrace it wholeheartedly.”

Richardson said, “I give him everything, every

breath, every thought. I give up my life to him in return for this saving, this so doomed for eternal damnation. When I got off my knees, and I don’t know how long I was down there, but when I finally got up, I actually felt - I can’t explain it any other way - I felt the guilt fall off of me, praise God. From that moment forward, I felt redeemed. I was even more committed to giving everything to him. And so I had this tremendous thirst to know the word of God.”

Reviewers of Richardson’s book call his writings “captivating” and “enriching” with biblical information that will educationally heighten followers of the Christian faith.

“Not only is its content filled with detailed information, but Mr. Ronald Richardson’s testimony was enlightening. It is obvious he put concentrated study into critical issues affecting Christian culture.,” says Retired Senior Pastor Lyman Isaac Doster, of The Greater Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Los Angeles, California. “His presentation comes across as honest and straightforward.”

Richardson was asked during the interview about a statement in the Bible where Jesus says you must be the least to be the greatest. What is meant by it?

“This was another area that I prayed about and researched. One possible interpretation of what Jesus meant by that is that if I served everyone else before I even thought about serving myself, and I am the least,” Richardson says.

“If everyone in the Kingdom of God had that same servant mentality and served everyone before thinking of themselves, then by definition, I would be served by everyone in the Kingdom because they all have the same servant mentality that I have serving everyone before themselves. So I would be the greatest in the Kingdom of God because I’m served by everyone, but at the same time, I would be the least in the Kingdom of God because I’m serving every-

body before I serve myself.”

New Data Model Sheds Light on the Depth of America’s Arrest and Conviction Records Crisis

The Clean Slate Initiative’s Data Dashboard Allows Lawmakers to Scale the Impact of Second Chance Legislation

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In a breakthrough for public policy creation, a new data model unveiled by The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) offers detailed insights into the crisis of arrest and conviction records in America. The data model powers The CSI Data Dashboard, which presents data visualizations and population estimates for people in the U.S. impacted by arrest and conviction records, with data further broken down by race, ethnicity, sex, and type of record within each state and over time. The CSI Data Dashboard is available at cleanslateinitiative.org/data.

“In the 30 years since Congress passed the 1994 Crime Bill, millions of people have been caught in the ever-widening net of the criminal legal system,” said Sheena Meade, CEO of The Clean Slate Initiative. “As a result, one in three adults in our country are held back from reaching their full potential because of some kind of record. The CSI Data Dashboard empowers policymakers to craft impactful automatic record clearance legislation, paving the way for data-driven solutions to create transformational change in millions of people’s lives and address racial inequities created by decades of overcriminalization.”

Since 2018, twelve (12) states have passed legislation that meets The Clean Slate Initiative’s policy minimums. These laws replace burdensome and expensive petition-based record clearance processes with a streamlined system that auto -

matically clears eligible records after people complete their sentences and remain crime-free for a specified period of time. Around 14 million people are in line to receive full record clearance in the 12 states that have passed Clean Slate laws.

Estimating how many people would benefit from Clean Slate legislation presents multiple challenges for lawmakers, such as incomplete or erroneous administrative data, variances in race and ethnicity, and dynamic factors, including re-arrest, reconviction, and peoples’ movement between states.

“It’s essential for public policy to be founded on good data,” said Dr. Laura Chavez, director of research and data at The Clean Slate Initiative. “The CSI Data Dashboard shows how many people will benefit from a second chance if certain types and numbers of records are eligible for clearance under legislative proposals. As a result, lawmakers can appropriately craft policies, ensuring everyone who has earned a second chance can receive it.”

Samuel Sinyangwe, data scientist for The Clean Slate Initiative, led the creation of The CSI Data Dashboard and the data model that powers it. The model’s Methodology Document is available here.

Earlier this year, The Clean Slate Initiative released fact sheets demonstrating proposed legislation’s impact in four states - Kentucky, Illinois,

Maryland, and Missouri. The fact sheets use CSI’s data model to quantify the impact of the specific legislation put forward to each state’s legislature. The CSI Data Dashboard offers even greater detail about who would benefit from record clearance policies with varying eligibility criteria.

“Everyone can likely think of someone close to them with some kind of record. It may be a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, but it’s likely someone they care deeply for,” said Sheena Meade. “We want the people we care for to have the opportunity to create a better life for themselves and those who depend, not be held back long after having paid their debt to society. We want them to have a fair shot at redemption. We look forward to working with lawmakers throughout the country and using The CSI Data Dashboard to ensure automatic record clearance reaches the millions of people who have earned a meaningful second chance.”

The Clean Slate Initiative is a non-profit organization that engages bipartisan support to pass and implement laws that automatically clear eligible records for people who have completed their sentence and remained crime-free and expand who is eligible for clearance. The organization works to build a future where people will no longer be defined by their records and have a fair opportunity to work, get an education, and achieve their full potential.

tion and menopause that often bring shame and embarrassment.”

Walk Your Way to Better Health

MISSION, Kan., PRNewswire -- (Family Features) A walk is not just good for your body, it’s also good for your soul. Physical activity, like walking, is one of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your mood. However, reports show walking rates are declining steadily in the United States.

On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.

Consider this advice from the American Heart Association, which has worked for decades to promote policies and strategies that make it easier for communities to get and stay active. One example is National Walking Day, which took place on April 3. It was established by the organization to encourage people to move more throughout the day so they can feel, think, sleep and live better.

Indeed, adding more movement can benefit your body and mind in numerous ways, such as:

The 2023 State of the Period survey found that nearly 80% of teens say they are taught more about the biology of frogs than the human female body in school and more than half of adults who menstruate feel too ashamed or embarrassed to seek help when they have questions about their bodies. This lack of information and confusion around normal body functions, leads to misconceptions, inaccuracies and biases causing shame and embarrassment around our bodies.

Inspired by the inaccurate portrayal of women experiencing menstruation and menopause on visual AI platforms, Thinx has created a provocative creative campaign that illustrates how societal menstruation stigmas are perpetuated in AI, highlighting the need for education to break the cycle of stigma surrounding women’s health.

GetBodyWise.com provides a safe space for need-to-know information to foster a deeper understanding of menstrual health and body literacy. With new topics published quarterly and focusing on every life stage - from teen’s first period to postpartum and menopause - the hub will feature a variety of educational articles and activities, and videos featuring Dr. Saru Bala, licensed naturopathic doctor and Thinx partner.

“I’ve seen firsthand how my patients struggle to understand what is normal when it comes to their health due to the perception that the topic is taboo or can’t be openly discussed,” said Dr. Saru Bala, ND. “By promoting body literacy, we help women become self advocates and embrace open conversations that combat the notion that menstruation and menopause are shameful.”

The campaign, created by the agency BBDO Los Angeles, features a collection of visuals inspired by AI outputs. When these platforms were prompted with straightforward requests like ‘a girl during puberty’ or ‘woman during menopause,’ many showcased states of shame or guilt for searches of normal bodily functions.

“AI is a sobering reflection of the cultural stigmas of periods that are still pervasive within our society,” said Crystal Zerrenner, Chief Growth Officer at Thinx. “It is further proof of the rampant bias towards women’s bodies in our popular culture or conversation online, which is why we are launching Get BodyWise to help break the cycle of bias and normalize discourse on this topic.”

While conceptually identical to those generated by AI, the company chose to collaborate with artists that menstruate to produce original images inspired by AI image generators.

“At Thinx, we know how important it is to be able to access relevant, accurate information when you have questions about your body,” said Sara Plotkin, VP, Brand & Creative at Thinx. “We hope this platform becomes a resource for teens, their parents and teachers, and adults alike, to further help normalize conversations around periods and combat tropes around menstrua-

To further its commitment to combating these stigmas, Thinx joined the UN Women UnStereotype Alliance this year to highlight the need to eradicate harmful stereotypes in media and advertising content. Additionally, they took center stage at MAKERS to spark conversation around body literacy and to call for action among brands, leaders, and individuals to Get BodyWise.

Thinx is a family of brands dedicated to creating products that support bodies from puberty to post-menopause. Together with our brands, Thinx, Thinx Teens™, Thinx for All*, and Thinx for All Leaks™, we are on a mission to be the key innovative leader at bringing reusable and comfortable menstruation and incontinence products to market. We strive to deliver the safest products available, and our underwear is certified based on the rigorous chemical safety requirements of the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® [20.HUS.04850 | HOHENSTEIN HTTI] and complies with the even more stringent OEKO-TEX® 100 Class II, Annexure IV.: Our innovation is recognized by top industry publications, including WWD, PureWow, Cosmopolitan. Thinx was acquired by Kimberly-Clark Corporation in December 2023.

Lowering disease risk. Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

Increasing sunlight exposure. Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity and help you get some vitamin D. Spending time outdoors is a no-cost option and has been shown to reduce stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood.

Improving cognitive and mental function. Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher fitness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What’s more, a study published in the “British Journal of Sports Medicine” shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop depression. Living longer. Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity. According to research published in the “American Journal of Epidemiology,” swapping just 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity reduced risk of death by 17%.

Get moving to reduce your stress and step into better health. Learn more at heart.org/movemore.

Get Inspired to Get Moving

A little creativity can go a long way to make your walk more fun. You might think of walking as a solo activity, but a companion makes it even more enjoyable. Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you.

A walk is a perfect excuse to take a break from a long day at your desk. If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go or plan your walk as a reward for completing a project.

Use your walk as a guilt-free opportunity to listen to a new audiobook or create a walking soundtrack of your favorite upbeat music.

Mix up your scenery. Taking new routes keeps your walks interesting and helps prevent boredom from traveling the same predictable path.

If you need an extra nudge to get moving, a pet may help you get fit. Dog parents are more likely to reach their fitness goals than those without canine companions. In fact, according to the “Journal of Physical Activity & Health,” dog parents are 34% more likely to fit in 150 minutes of walking a week than non-dog owners. Pets can also help lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar and boost your overall happiness and well-being.

(StatePoint) When it comes to planning their retirement, most people will rely upon their savings, 401(k)s and other forms of income to provide the security they will need for that phase of life.

However, many don’t consider a crucial need for their later years: long-term care insurance.

In fact, a recent Forbes study revealed only about one-quarter of adults nearing retirement have seriously considered getting long-term care insurance or a savings account dedicated to long-term care expenses.

Further, many consumers mistakenly think their health insurance or Medicaid will cover various aspects of long-term care services when that might not be the case. In a LIMRA study, 29% of respondents said they believe they own some form of standalone long-term care insurance coverage or combination life/long-term care insurance coverage. The data shows long-term care ownership is closer to 3.1%.

So why are Americans neglecting this aspect of financial planning? For many, common misconceptions are preventing them from being prepared. Here are six myths about longterm care and the truth you might not know from Bankers Life, a national life and health insurance brand.

Myth #1: I won’t need long-term care.

Reality: Needing help with such daily activities as eating, bathing, dressing, toi-

leting and continence, among others, may seem like an unlikely scenario. However, about 70% of people aged 65 and older will need some type of longterm care during their lifetime, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Myth #2: My family will take care of me.

Reality: Physical, financial and geographical limitations prevent many people from caring for their aging relatives, even if they intended to. That’s why it’s important to be prepared to pay for the long-term care you may need some day.

Myth #3: Medicare will cover my longterm care.

Reality: Medicare is designed to cover acute care, or the care you need when you’re sick and will eventually recover from an illness. It doesn’t cover ongoing Activities of Daily Living services when those are the only care you need.

Long-term care insurance is designed to help cover ongoing custodial care services, which includes assistance with dressing, bathing, eating or other Activities of Daily Living.

Myth #4: I’ll use my Social Security benefits to pay for long-term care.

Reality: Long-term care is expensive, with homemaker services costing $163 per day on average and a semi-private room in a nursing home costing $260 per day on average, according to SeniorLiving.org. Even the maximum monthly Social Security benefit of $3,6275 won’t cover these amounts.

Myth #5: Nursing homes are the only option.

Reality: When you hear “long-term care,” you may immediately think “nursing home,” but today there are a wide variety of services available that you may receive at a facility, in the community or in the comfort of your own home.

Owning long-term care insurance can help ensure you receive the care you need on your terms— where and how you want it.

Myth #6: I will get long-term care insurance later, when I need it.

Reality: Qualifying for long-term care insurance coverage after you’re diagnosed with an illness is difficult. Applying for long-term care insurance at a younger age helps you qualify for coverage and lock in lower premiums. For this reason, many people purchase longterm care insurance in their 50s when they’re still in good health. For more information on long-term care insurance, reach out to a Bankers
