Committeeman recalls time in local politics Continued from page 1

Calvin Jordan is a Rich Township Democratic Committeeman but his involvement with local politics dates back to 1989, when he worked for John H. Stroger, who was a Cook County Commissioner at the time.

When Jordan moved to Chicago, he was introduced to Stroger. Back then, he said he watched Stroger’s passion. In watching Stroger, that was when Jordan said his own passion for politics “took off ”.

A resident of Olympia Fields since 1993, Jordan grew up in Arkansas and was part of Bill Clinton’s campaign before Clinton became Governor of Arkansas. Jordan said he wanted to see good things take place in government.

“When you can help people and make a difference, it makes a difference,” Jordan said, who’s been involved in Rich Township government since 1994.

By working in county government and with local municipalities, Jordan was able to see how much more could be done when delivering services to residents, especially for seniors.

It was the reason he said he wanted to run for Rich Township Supervisor.

Jordan said there are some things that need to be set up in the township for the seniors who live there, adding the 12 municipalities that make up Rich Township could benefit from partnerships between each other. During his listening tour, Jordan said people had a lot of questions about Rich Township, what kinds of services are offered, what is going on with

the township.

“What I really felt was after listening, we have to educate people to let them know the services we actually provide. We just can’t be a sleeper,” he said.

Electors have to go into the municipalities in the township to work hand in hand with supervisors and clerks in the township, Jordan maintains, and suggested getting ambassadors from each municipality to disseminate information.

He said he interacts with a lot of different people adding, it’s essential to listen to residents and educate them about the services offered. “Every municipality knows what they do in their area. You just can’t be an island.

You’ve got to expand and talk to people about services,” he said.

Jordan said seniors have expressed wanting to be involved and he wants to create a senior board. He said although the township doesn’t have an economic development director, he wants to find out how to help residents in the township. One of the things he wants to do is sit down with leaders of the municipalities and businesses to discuss collaborations between the municipalities and the township.

Jordan has tried to recruit people who are passionate about giving back to their community. He also works with students at Governors State University who are majoring in political science. “People run for office, but I am very passionate about this,” he said. “I think right now is a good time to do a lot of things because our people really need help now.”

his massive $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, President Joe Biden addressed the nation and announced the implementation of his next phase of a national strategy to put the pandemic in the country’s rear-view mirror.

The President declared that he would direct states, tribes, and territories to make all adults eligible for the coronavirus vaccine by May 1.

In his first prime-time address since taking over the Oval Office, President Biden proclaimed a goal of getting the nation closer to normal by the July 4 holiday.

“If we do our part, if we do this together, by July 4, there’s a good chance you, your families, and friends will be able to get together in your backyard or in your neighborhood and have a cookout and a barbecue and celebrate Independence Day,” he noted as he stared firmly into the television camera.

Speaking from the East Room of the White House, President Biden said returning to normal requires everyone to continue wearing face

coverings, social distancing, and getting vaccinated.

More than 529,000 Americans have died since the pandemic began, and nearly 30 million have contracted the virus. “We all lost something,” the President declared.

“A collective suffering, a collective sacrifice, a year filled with the loss of life. In the loss, we saw how much there was to gain. An appreciation, respect and gratitude,” he uttered.

Within his first hours in office, President Biden launched a comprehensive strategy to defeat the pandemic. He noted that in the seven weeks since, the Administration has delivered more than 81 million vaccinations and more people can visit their loved ones again.

“There is more work to do,” the President reminded viewers.

He promised that the White House COVID-19 Response Team has concluded that the accelerated vaccination efforts will enable prioritized vaccinations that will

prove far enough along by the end of April that officials could lift all eligibility restrictions at that time.

The President outlined a “ramped-up effort” to create more places for people to get vaccinated, enabling officials to reach those hardest hit and most challenging to reach.

Over the next six weeks, the Administration will deliver vaccines directly to up to an additional 700 community health centers that reach underserved communities, increasing the total number of participating community health centers across the country to 950, White House officials said.

The Administration also will double the number of pharmacies participating in the federal pharmacy program, making the vaccine available at more than 20,000 pharmacies in locations convenient to all Americans.

Pharmacies are also directed to expand mobile operations into the hardest-hit communities to reach more people.

The Administration promises

to more than double the number of federally run mass vaccination centers, run by FEMA, the U.S. military, and other federal agencies in partnership with states, to ensure that we reach the hardest-hit communities in this historic effort.

“Finding light in the darkness is a very American thing to do,” President Biden said.

He also used the national platform to denounce racism and hate crimes against Asian Americans, whom the previous Administration targeted as the cause of the pandemic.

“There have been vicious hate crimes against Asian Americans who’ve been attacked, harassed, blamed, and scapegoated,” President Biden remarked.

“At this very moment, so many of them, our fellow Americans, are on the front lines of this pandemic trying to save lives and still are forced to live in fear for their lives just walking down streets in America. “It’s wrong, it’s un-American, and it must stop.”

After prolonged period of press-bashing, a more constructive form of media criticism is now flourishing

BY KEVIN M. LERNER Over the past several years, and maybe even longer, it seems as if every day brings a new round of attacks on the American press.

Some of these attacks come under the guise of criticism: accusations of being “fake news”; arguments that journalists are biased.

But some more seriously threaten journalists themselves. Just recently, Fox News host Tucker Carlson unleashed what was described as a “calculated and cruel” verbal assault against New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz repeatedly on his show. Some rallies for Donald Trump even saw attendees displaying threats of lynching reporters on a T-shirt.

This kind of criticism – attempting to delegitimize the press – serves to undermine trust in the work that journalists do. But even if these attacks on the press seem prominent now, they are part of a decadeslong trend.

The public’s trust in the media began declining in the mid-1970s.

By 2020, a Pew Research Center survey found that more than half of the American public had either “not too much” confidence in the news media or none at all.

That erosion reflected a growing distrust of institutions and a trend toward political partisanship that sent readers toward news outlets that reflected their own points of view. The rise of conservative critics of the mainstream press also contributed to this erosion of media trust.

Over the past five years, though, another kind of press criticism has come to prominence after a period of marginalization. This brand of press criticism takes a free and independent press as a necessity for life in a democratic society.

Instead of seeking to delegitimize the press, these critics are simultaneously explaining the workings of the press to the public and holding

it accountable in its role as the public’s representative and watchdog.

Explaining and holding accountable In recent weeks, these critics have pointed out that many reporters were hasty in passing along a Georgia sheriff ’s statement that the alleged murderer of eight people was having “a bad day.” And they have also tried to explain why members of the press care so much about whether or not President Joe Biden holds a press conference, despite the fact that the public, largely, is unconcerned.

I am a scholar of press criticism.

My research has shown that good faith press criticism can actually strengthen the press and the public’s trust in it.

Much of my research is based on the work of the press scholar James Carey, who in 1974 wrote an essay that called for a culture of press criticism to take root in the U.S. He observed that far more effort went into criticizing film and fiction and poetry than criticizing journalism – and yet most people consume much more news than poetry.

Carey believed that critics who understand the processes of the press could help the news-consuming public understand better what they were reading or watching. At the same time, the critics and the public would hold the press to a higher standard.

Good and bad faith The social upheaval of the second half of the 1960s led many reporters during the 1970s to conclude that the bland, detached tone that was required by news organizations’ socalled objectivity could not accurately portray the divisions in society.

J. Anthony Lukas, a Pulitzer Prize– winning New York Times reporter, wrote a book about how the paper would not let him cover the Chicago 7 conspiracy trial as the political show trial he saw it to be. They insisted that he describe it “objectively,” using the same characterization of the trial that the prosecutors used, without regard for the perspectives of the defendants or Lukas’ own judgment.

Younger reporters such as Lukas began to realize that the so-called objective news values and practices that their editors insisted on actually biased the press toward preserving the status quo, and people who were already in power.

As the 1970s began, two major reporting events – the publication of the Pentagon Papers in 1971 and The Washington Post’s Watergate reporting – convinced many reporters that the government was not always working for the public good. These works of journalism exposed government and politicians acting against the public interest, and even illegally.

In response, several regional journalism reviews cropped up. This movement culminated in the launch of a magazine called (MORE), which was based in New York City but aspired to a national audience.

In my book about (MORE), I argue it is the publication that has come closest to achieving James Carey’s goal of press criticism addressed to nonspecialist readers.

In the 1970s, (MORE) and other critics pushed publications to hire more women and nonwhite reporters, and pointed out racist, sexist and xenophobic language that seeped – consciously or not – into journalists’ stories. (MORE) even pushed The New York Times toward

accountability, suggesting that it begin to run a daily corrections section – which it did, starting in 1972.

But even (MORE) never really reached an audience beyond working journalists or people with an intense interest in how the press operates. Some later efforts, such as the early 2000s magazine Brill’s Content, also failed to find an audience that could support its work.

All of these attempts could be described as good faith criticism of the press, based on the premise that a strong independent press, responsive to the information needs of an engaged citizenry, is essential to the functioning of a democratic society.

It functions as a kind of loyal opposition, pointing out the blind spots in the media and suggesting ways that it could do better.

During the same period, bad faith attacks on the press began to rise, led by a concerted effort among conservative critics. Along with the effort of creating a conservative counterbalance, they engaged in attempts to delegitimize it by painting it as irredeemably biased.

These conservative attacks on the press were direct antecedents of more recent incidents, such as Tucker Carlson’s attacks and similar criticism from commentators such as Mark Levin and the conservative media watchdog Accuracy in Media. This strain of bad faith criticism is alive and well.

Good faith press criticism today But the U.S. now seems to be entering what might be a potential golden age of press criticism.

On any given day, you can read perceptive, incisive press criticism

by Margaret Sullivan at The Washington Post. Sullivan previously served as an in-house critic – a public editor – for The New York Times.

Some publications continue this public editor or ombudsman tradition, and the Columbia Journalism Review has appointed some individual watchdogs for publications that do not have them, including The

New York Times, which eliminated the position in 2017.

Columnist Ben Smith has written excellent reported columns about the media for The New York Times since 2020, occasionally turning his critical eye to the shortcomings of the newspaper itself. He has particularly focused on examinations of diversity, equity and inclusion at The New York Times.

The public radio show On the Media has broadcast since 1993.

Each week, the program combines reporting and commentary on the press based on a deep understanding of how it works. Hosts Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield help their listeners understand how news stories get made, and what the differences are between different news outlets.

But the big national news outlets aren’t the only ones publishing this kind of work. Local papers are getting in on the act too.

For example, in February 2021, The Bergen Record in northern New Jersey launched a monthly column by Jim Beckerman, focusing on the media.

“It will deal with a lot of things that consumers – and critics – of media beef about. Things like ‘objectivity,’ balance, inclusion, representation,” wrote Beckerman in an introduction to the new column. “It may help explain how newspapers and media do what they do – and why, for good or ill, they are what they are.”

Today’s electronic media make this sort of good faith criticism accessible to more people than ever before. But it will be sustainable only if it finds an engaged audience who believe that a robust independent press is essential to democracy, and that the press needs these critics to keep it accountable.

ment and profit of spectators,” said Richard Patch, vice president of federal affairs for the ASPCA. “Animals rescued in federal animal fighting cases have suffered enough at the hands of their abusers, and the red tape of the forfeiture system should not be a barrier to their eventual adoption. Although dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, it continues to occur in every part of the country and in every type of community.

NEWS ICC Announces FY 2022-2026 Crossing Safety Improvement Plan

UIC Urban Forum to address wealth gap, equity concerns COVID-19 has brought attention to various disparities in American cities and the growing divide between rich and poor. While many strategies have been proposed to close the wealth gap – raising minimum wage, housing integration and education – it’s generally agreed that a simple solution does not exist.

The University of Illinois Chicago’s 2021 Urban Forum, titled “Closing the Wealth Gap,” will take on the complex matter of closing the wealth gap by focusing on equity during a virtual program scheduled April 14 from 9 a.m. – noon.

The program will begin with a visual presentation from Amanda Williams, a Chicago-based visual artist and trained architect whose creative practice employs color as an operative means for drawing attention to the complex ways race informs how we assign value to the spaces we occupy.

The keynote address will be delivered by Heather McGhee, author of the New York Times best-seller, “The Sum of Us,” and board chair for Color Of Change, a national online racial justice organization.

Program speakers, panels and papers will help consider how citizens and policymakers can collectively begin to change and address barriers and build off of successful strategies to increase equity in communities by addressing the historical and structural barriers that are a source of the gap.

The conversations are slated to deal with racial dynamics that shape social, economic and political structures; property ownership that affects wealth across different populations; and the geographic distribution of public services and land use.

The Illinois Commerce Commission recently approved its annual five-year Crossing Safety Improvement Program to begin implementing highway-rail safety capital projects for local roads across the state.

For Fiscal Years 2022-2026, the ICC will spend $341 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) to help local communities and railroads pay for safety improvements at nearly 500 crossing locations. The plan also allocates $78 million from the Rebuild Illinois (RBI) capital program for the installation of grade crossing protection or grade separations not limited to local routes or other restrictions.

“Through the bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, my administration is making critical investments in infrastructure and safety projects across the state that have been neglected for too long,” said Governor JB Pritzker.

“This $78 million investment will allow local communities to install life-saving rail safety measures at nearly 500 crossing locations over the next five years with the goal of reducing fatal crashes and making our roads safer.”

Projects are prioritized based upon several criteria,

including the relative safety of the existing crossing, volume and types of existing train and highway traffic. After a project is prioritized based on engineering requirements, geographic location is also consider to ensure projects are awarded across the state as equitably as possible.

The GCPF, appropriated to the Illinois Department of Transportation, but administered by the ICC, was created by state law to assist local jurisdictions (counties, townships and municipalities) in paying for safety improvements at highway-rail crossings on local roads and streets only. In addition, the Plan includes $78 million as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program. These funds have been appropriated to IDOT from the Multi-Modal Transportation Bond Fund for grading crossing protection or grade separation projects as ordered by the ICC. In 2020, preliminary statistics indicate there were 82 collisions at public highway-rail crossings in Illinois, compared to 104 in 2019, a 21.2% decrease. Total fatalities resulting from collisions at highway-rail crossings in Illinois decreased from 19 in 2019 to 17 in 2020.

Mantra Health Launches 2021 Scholarship for Students of Color Pursuing Degrees in Mental Health Mantra Health, a digital mental health provider that partners with higher education institutions, recently announced the launch of the Mantra College Mental Health Provider Diversity Scholarship for the 2021 academic year. The $3,000 scholarship will serve Black, Hispanic, Latinx, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander graduate and postdoctoral students pursuing a degree related to mental health and completing work in a university or college counseling center.

“Mantra’s diversity scholarship is one step closer to

ending the racial inequities that are fraught in the mental health field,” said Dr. Kristel Carrington, medical director, Mantra Health. “Our hope is that as more students of marginalized identities enter mental health as a profession and the pool of providers becomes more diverse, we’ll see a reduction in these disparities.”

The convenience retailer has teamed up with The Ammersion Group, a new Dallas-based creative agency, to identify acclaimed artists to create neighborhood-specific murals on interior and exterior walls of existing and new 7-Eleven® stores.

The goal of the mural program is to capture each neighborhood’s energy through inclusive on-site murals in order to bring connection and creativity to local communities. 7-Eleven first embarked on the massive art project in Dallas, the company’s hometown, where they pioneered the convenience store concept almost 100 years ago.

“We kicked off our mural program with a local artist at a new 7-Eleven Evolution Store, an experiential testing ground where we test new concepts, products and services before we scale them across the 7-Eleven system,” said 7-Eleven Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marissa Jarratt. “It’s been a hit so far and I’ve seen my fair share of excited customers stop what they’re doing to take Instagram-worthy photos in front of the larger-than-life mural.

7-Eleven selected painter and illustrator Mariell Guzman to

capture the essence of the neighborhood. Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Guzman pulls from her Mexican heritage to create murals with a vibrant color palette and whimsical gaze. Guzman wanted to bring the rich heritage of her native homeland to the community where she works and creates.

“Creating a mural for 7-Eleven in my very own neighborhood was a true honor and a privilege,” Guzman said. “I’m very grateful to The Ammersion Group for believing in my work and connecting me with the 7-Eleven team to create a new landmark for the Lake Highlands community.”

Two more bold mixed media murals have already been painted by portrait artist Brandon Adams at the Southside store on South Lamar and, most recently, graffiti artist and a leader in the local arts scene Tex Moton at a yet-to-open store on Park Lane and Abrams, also in East Dallas.

The genesis of the effort was born through a visionary collaboration between 7-Eleven and The Ammersion Group, working under the umbrella of “Artists Building Brands.” Bringing communities together has never been more important, which is why 7-Eleven directly engaged the North Texas arts community and plans to do the same in other U.S. cities.

This project embraces community beautification by connecting the fine art and marketing worlds, while also mentoring and supporting creatives of all backgrounds and communities.

Easy Fish Friday options for kids and adults

(BPT) - Fish Friday is an important part of Lent, and if you honor this tradition, you're probably looking to add something different to the menu. At the same time, you're probably not looking forward to the extra effort of making something new.

Fortunately, there are simple ways to create wholesome Fish Friday meals and snacks for both kids and grownups, without extra time or work. Here's how to do that: Tip 1: Visit the freezer aisle For Fish Friday, you don't need a complex recipe or expensive fresh fish or seafood to make a splash! Stock up on frozen options and you'll have plenty of easily prepared meals and snacks to last through Lent and beyond.

"At the end of a long week, it's nice to have a tasty and convenient frozen seafood product on hand to make Fish Friday a stress-free meal," says Rachael Hartley, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. NEWS IDOT Is Reminding Drivers To Think Before You Throw!

With the arrival of spring, the Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be on the lookout for crews picking up litter and asking the public to do its part by properly disposing trash and saving taxpayers millions of dollars a year in unnecessary costs.

“While IDOT is committed to maintaining a positive impression of Illinois by having our maintenance teams collect litter from our roadsides, we need your help,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “If the warmer temperatures make you tempted to toss that food wrapper or pop can out your car window, please don’t. Trash is more than just an eyesore. It has real, negative impacts on both the environment and our communities.”

If you encounter maintenance vehicles and workers in litter pickup operations, slow down, move over and give them space – it’s the law.

Other litter facts: • Last year, IDOT spent approximately $6.1 million on litter pickup, the equivalent of resurfacing 30 miles of road or purchasing 40 new maintenance trucks that also plow

snow in winter.

• Items tossed onto the road cause distractions, crashes and even hurt people. They also put workers who have to pick them up later at risk.

• Littering is illegal, subject to a fine of up to $1,500. If convicted of littering on a highway, the violator may, in addition to other penalties, be required to maintain litter control for 30 days over a portion of that highway as well.

• Litter kills plants and animals.

• It’s unsightly – no one likes to live where there’s litter.

• Littering is a problem that’s easily controlled. Use a trash can instead.

After limiting activities in 2020 due to COVID-19, IDOT’s Adopt-AHighway program is resuming normal operations. The program partners IDOT with volunteer groups to help keep the state’s non-interstate roadsides clean. Anyone can apply by completing an online application found on the IDOT website and “adopting” a two-mile section of highway.

Simmons has announced that a Toni Morrison Writing Program would be established at PVAMU in honor of the writer and her former student, MacKenzie Scott. The philanthropist, who is also a writer, donated $50 million to the University in October 2020; $3 million of her gift will be designated to endow the Morrison Writing Program.

The Writing Program will include a Toni Morrison Writer-in-Residence. Appointed annually, a different writer each year will have a one-year visiting appointment at Prairie View, where that individual will offer a seminar in writing. The Toni Morrison Writer-in-Residence will hold public readings of the writer’s work and that of other writers to bring visibility to the importance of writing and the legacy of African American writers, especially those educated at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Morrison was a graduate of Howard University, an HBCU in Washington, D.C. Morrison was also the Robert F. Goheen Profes-

sor of Creative Writing at Princeton University when MacKenzie Scott was a student there. Scott studied with Morrison.

Born Chloe Wofford on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio, Morrison was a prolific essayist and novelist. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Humanities Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her award-winning novels include “The Bluest Eye” (1970), “Sula” (1973), “Song of Solomon” (1977), “Tar Baby” (1981), and “Beloved” (1987).

Emma Joahanne Thomas-Smith, Ed.D., PVAMU provost emerita, will oversee

the Toni Morrison Writing Program. With decades of experience in higher education, Thomas-Smith previously led the University’s Honors Program and the Department of English and Languages.

“Faculty and staff of both the University and area high schools will share in the activities of the program and benefit from the Writer-in-Residence and other artists representing the full range of literary genres,” shared Thomas-Smith.

In addition, the Toni Morrison Writing Program will sponsor a high school writing contest. The winner of the competition will receive a college scholarship.
