And, as the economy takes a hit, some businesses may even need to downsize, leaving the remaining workers to take on duties they are unprepared for and weren’t hired to carry out.

That’s one reason why it’s always a good idea to cross-train employees, allowing someone else to step in when circumstances necessitate it, says Bill Higgs, an authority on corporate culture and the ForbesBooks author of the Culture Code Champions: 7 Steps to Scale & Succeed in Your Business(www.culturecodechampions.com/training).

“Ultimately, you want everyone who works for you to broaden their knowledge and expand the scope of what they normally do,” says Higgs, a founder and former CEO of Mustang Engineering who recently launched the Culture Code Champions podcast.

“The result is a more efficient and productive workplace.”

In his younger days, Higgs was an Army Ranger, where the need to cross-train was

inescapable.

“If you are on a critical military mission and someone goes down, another Ranger needs to take over that person’s duties,” Higgs says. “Otherwise, the mission would be scrapped.”

The average business day may not be as severely distressing as a military mission, but just as in the military, cross-training comes with benefits, he says. It prevents mistakes.

It improves accuracy. It saves time. It saves money.

And each additional duty an employee can take on during uncertain times could make the difference on whether a project or order is completed on time, and whether missed deadlines leave customers unhappy, costing the business money – or even leading to it going out of business.

“Some business leaders may say they just can’t work in the time for cross-training because they and their employees are too busy,” Higgs says. “They probably are busy, but it needs to be a priority and they need to figure out a way to find the time. We’re probably seeing right now just how important it can be.”

A few suggestions he has for working cross-training in to harried schedules include: l Make use of downtime. Few people are busy every minute, so take advantage of any

downtime to slip in cross-training, Higgs says.

“That way, no one is just sitting around waiting for the next project,” he says. “At Mustang, for example, if an instrument engineer’s work slowed down, then we moved him or her over to automation or some other functional area that was related to, but slightly different from, the person’s regular job.” l Schedule time. “I’m skeptical when people tell me they don’t have any downtime, but let’s assume that’s so,” Higgs says. “Then I recommend you set aside time specifically dedicated to cross-training. It’s that important.” Figure out who you need to cross-train, he says, and find the areas of your business where cross-training will pay off the most. l Implement “lunch-and-learns.” Nearly everyone eats lunch or takes a break at midday, and that’s a great time to set up some lunch-and-learn times when someone in the company can teach others about what they do, Higgs says. “At Mustang, we even had vendors come in and talk about their products and services,” he says.

“An added bonus to cross-training is people who don’t normally interact are brought together and develop a better appreciation for what others do,” Higgs says. “That helps to create an even greater sense of team throughout the organization, which is especially im-

portant during difficult times like these when everyone needs to pull together.”

We are entering a recession – but what did we learn from the last one?

As the coronavirus continues to spread around the world, it is abundantly clear that the global economy is entering a recession – the first we’ve seen since 2008.

Some officials have compared the last period of economic decline – also know as the Great Recession – to the Depression, which began in 1929.

Yet it is clear that these two downturns differed not only in severity but also in the consequences they had for inequality in the United States.

Though the Depression was bigger and longer than the Great Recession, the decades following the Great Depression substantially reduced the wealth of the rich and improved the economic security of many workers.

In contrast, the Great Recession exacerbated both income and wealth inequality.

Some scholars have attributed this phenomenon to a weakened labor movement, fewer worker protections and a radicalized political right wing.

In our view, this account misses the dominance of Wall Street and the financial sector and overlooks its fundamental role in generating economic disparities.

We are experts in income inequality, and our new book, “Divested: Inequality in the Age of Finance,” argues that inequality from the Recession has a lot to do with how the government designed its response.

The Depression Reforms during the Great Depression restructured the financial system by restricting banks from risky investment, Wall Street from gambling with household savings and lenders from charging high or unpredictable interests.

The New Deal, a series of government programs created after the Great Depression, took a bottom-up approach and brought governmental resources directly to unemployed workers.

On the other hand, the regulatory policies since the financial crisis that began in 2008 were largely designed

to restore a financial order that, for decades, has been channeling resources from the rest of the economy to the top.

In other words, the recent recovery was largely focused on finance.

Governmental stimuli, particularly a mass injection of credit, first went to banks and large corporations, in the hope that the credit eventually would trickle down to families in need.

The conventional wisdom was that banks knew how to put the credit into best use. And so, to stimulate economic growth, the Federal Reserve increased the supply of money to banks by purchasing treasury and mortgage-backed securities.

But the stimulus didn’t work the way the government intended. The banks prioritized their own interests over those of the public. Instead of lending the money out to homebuyers and small businesses at historically low interest rates, they deposited the funds and waited for interest rates to rise.

Similarly, corporations did not use the easy credit to increase wages or create jobs. Rather, they borrowed www.citizennewspapergroup.com

to buy their own stock and channeled earnings to top executives and shareholders.

As a result, the “banks and corporations first” principle created a highly unequal recovery.

Who lost in 2009?

The financial crisis wiped out almost three-quarters of financial sector profits, but the sector had fully recovered by mid-2009, as we covered in our book.

Its profits continued to grow in the following years. By 2017, the sector made 80% more than before the financial crisis. Profit growth was much slower in the nonfinancial sector.

Companies outside of the financial sector were more profitable because they had fewer employees and lower wage costs. Payroll expenses dropped 4% during the recession and remained low during the recovery.

The stock market fully recovered from the crisis in 2013, a year when the unemployment rate was as high as 8% and the single-family mortgage delinquency still hovered above 10%.

Median household wealth, in the meantime, had yet to recoup from the nosedive during the Great Recession.

The racial wealth gap only widened, as well. While the median household wealth of all households dropped around 25% after the burst of real estate bubble, white households recovered at a much faster pace.

By 2016, black households had about 30% less wealth than before the crash, compared to 14% for white families.

As the government debates a stimulus package, officials can either decide to continue the “trickle-down” approach to first protect banks, corporations and their investors with monetary stimuli.

Or, they can learn from the New Deal and bring governmental support directly to the most fragile communities and families.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Commits Millions to Speed Treatment Research and Development

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has joined two other companies to commit as much as $125 million in seed funding to speed-up the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Gates Foundation has joined forces with Wellcome and Mastercard in hopes of identifying, assessing, developing, and scaling-up treatments.

The Gates Foundation and Wellcome are each contributing up to $50 million, and the Mastercard Impact Fund has committed up to $25 million to catalyze the initial work of the accelerator.

The Gates Foundation’s funding is part of its up to $100 million commitment to the COVID-19 response announced last month.

The partners are committed to equitable access, including making products available and affordable in low-resource settings, according to a news release from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Currently, there are no broad-spectrum antivirals or immunotherapies available for the fight against emerging pathogens, and none approved for use on COVID-19.

“Viruses like COVID-19 spread rapidly, but the development of vaccines and treatments to stop them moves slowly,” Mark Suzman, chief

executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, mentioned in the news release.

“If we want to make the world safe from outbreaks like COVID-19, particularly for those most vulnerable, then we need to find a way to make research and development move faster. That requires governments, private enterprise, and philanthropic organizations to act quickly to fund R&D.” The COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will work with the World Health Organization, government and private sector funders and organizations, as well as the global regulatory and policy-setting institutions.

Officials at The Gates Foundation noted that the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will play a catalytic role by accelerating and evaluating new and repurposed drugs and biologics to treat patients with COVID-19 in the immediate term, and other viral pathogens in the longer-term.

As noted in the news release, the Accelerator will have an end-to-end focus, from drug pipeline development through manufacturing and scale-up.

By sharing research, coordinating investments, and pooling resources, these efforts can help to accelerate research. Officials said this kind of collaboration was a key lesson from the 2014 Ebola outbreak.

By providing fast and flexible funding at key stages of the development process, the Accelerator will de-risk the pathway for

American Cancer Society in Illinois’ Pivots to Virtual Approach In light of recent developments regarding COVID-19, the American Cancer Society in Illinois is taking prompt action to #ContinueMission and keep their patients, caregivers, volunteers and staff, healthy.

“As a public health organization, the Society is committed to the well-being of all communities, specifically cancer patients, survivors and their care-givers who are central to our mission,” said Michael Ziener, executive director.

“As such we will continue our mission and have made the decision to pivot our live annual Discovery Ball event on April 18th to a virtual approach.”

Ziener and his community response team affirmed the prompt decision as part of the Society’s commitment to the safety of their event’s attendees, staff, and volunteers particularly those with compromised immune systems and currently battling cancer.

In addition to the Discovery Ball’s new online approach this year, ACS-IL suspended all in-person events through March 31. Once the COVID-19 threat has subsided, Ziener‘s team will work with the state’s volunteers and communities to reschedule them. More updates will be announced through their social channels.

new drugs and biologics for COVID-19 and future epidemic threats, ensuring access in lower-resource countries.

The COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will operate jointly as an initiative of the funders, drawing on expertise from inside and outside their organizations.

The Accelerator will pursue several aspects of the development cycle to streamline the pathway from candidate product to clinical assessment, use, and manufacturing.

To identify candidate compounds, the Accelerator will take a three-pronged approach: testing approved drugs for activity against COVID-19; screening libraries of thousands of compounds with confirmed safety data; and considering new investigational compounds and monoclonal antibodies.

Drugs or monoclonal antibodies that pass initial screening would then be developed by an industry partner.

The biotech and pharmaceutical industries will be critical partners, bringing their compound libraries and clinical data to the collaboration and lending commercialization and other expertise that will be required to scale up successful drugs and monoclonal antibodies.

In parallel to the development of the COVID-19 drug pipeline, the Accelerator will work with regulators to align criteria and develop manufacturing capacity with industry.

An accelerated pathway to bringing effective treatments to patients is around one year for products that have current regulatory approval or candidates with existing clinical data.

The timeline would be longer for compounds further upstream in the pipeline that have limited existing clinical data.

“This virus is an unprecedented global threat, and one for which we must propel international partnerships to develop treatments, rapid diagnostics, and vaccines,” Dr. Jeremy Farrar, director of Wellcome, noted in a statement.

“Science is moving at a phenomenal pace against COVID-19, but to get ahead of this epidemic we need greater investment and to ensure research co-ordination. The Therapeutics Accelerator will allow us to do this for potential treatments with support for research, development, assessment, and manufacturing. COVID-19 is an extremely challenging virus, but we’ve proved that through collaborating across borders we can tackle emerging infectious diseases.

“We must strive to strengthen efforts in the face of COVID-19, and in doing so, continue to make sure advances are accessible and affordable to all. Investing now, at scale, at risk and as a collective global effort is vital if we are to change the course of this epidemic. We welcome others to join us in this effort.”

Pilot Launched to Connect SNAP Recipients to Jobs The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) has announced a partnership with private philanthropy and the National Able Network that will expand the number of organizations who can provide work and training resources for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients in Illinois.

The SNAP to Success program is part of IDHS’ SNAP Employment & Training resources and it leverages federal funding to partner with community providers who help SNAP participants find employment or advance in their careers.

The SNAP to Success program provides these services at little to no cost to the State of Illinois with 50% of the program resources provided through the federal government and the remaining 50% provided by the community agency.

“SNAP to Success focuses on sustainable results for our customers.

These programs give our customers the tools they need to not only find jobs, but build long-lasting careers,” said IDHS Secretary Grace B. Hou. “At little to no cost to the state, this

program will expand over time, and participating community agencies can grow their programs by reinvesting the federal reimbursement they receive into future services.”

In partnership with the Chicagoland Workforce Funders Alliance, IDHS has expanded the SNAP to Success program to launch a new pilot in Chicago to better engage and support small and medium based providers to participate in the SNAP to Success program.

National Able Network will serve as the intermediary and centralize provider selection, monitoring, reporting and fiscal/program accountability requirements for the SNAP to Success program in Chicago. This will significantly expand the number of agencies who typically are unable to partner with the state.

“To make the greatest impact in our communities, we serve job seekers both directly through our own programming but also indirectly by helping small- to medium-sized nonprofit organizations build a stronger back office infrastructure. As an experienced provider of SNAP to

The pilot launches soon after federal changes were enacted that will require certain SNAP recipients, called Able Bodies Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs), to meet 80 hours of work requirements a month to continue to receive SNAP benefits.

The expansion of SNAP to Success through this pilot represents both a short- and long-term strategy to help alleviate the ABAWD crisis by immediately providing more meaningful opportunities in the community for skills training and to meet the ABAWD work requirement.

Broadway Actor Dwayne Clark and His Children Launch Book Series that Shares Experiences of an African American Family Actor Dwayne Clark, his 8-year old son DJ, and his 11-year old daughter Jada have launched a series of children’s books that portray life lessons from their family experiences to motivate young readers.

Written from a child’s point of view, the first two books – “One on One from Dad to Son: Lessons in Basketball and Discipline” and “Me, My Mom, and My First Violin”— are available on Amazon.

Dwayne’s love of performing as a Broadway actor and his role as a youth motivational speaker led to his writing books that portray African American families in a positive way.

“It is not only beneficial for children of color, but for all kids,” Dwayne says.

Dwayne’s love of performing and his role as a youth motivational speaker inspired the books. He realized that his children’s experiences supported messages he was using at schools and workshops. By telling stories from a child’s point of view, he hopes the books will educate children about the effort required to foster a unique talent. The books also reinforce the importance of parents sharing their own experiences with their children.

“One on One” is the story of a father sharing his love of basketball with his son DJ. DJ learns about the history and fundamentals of basketball while gaining the self-discipline that can help him succeed in all areas of his life.

“As a kid I played basketball. I worked hard at it. With repetition and coaching you get better. When I became a Broadway actor, the discipline I learned from basketball helped me tackle eight shows a week,” says Dwayne.

“Me, My Mom, and My First Violin” tells the story of how Jada’s artistic family supported and influenced her musical career, and the dedication and commitment it takes to be successful. In the book, Jada’s violin teacher Amy Beshara teaches her to take chances and develop self-confidence.

Actor Dwayne Clark, his 8-year old son DJ, and his 11-year old daughter Jada have launched a series of children’s books.

Dwayne and his wife Janeece Freeman Clark met during the Broadway production of Urinetown. Janeece leads the musical theatre department at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. She also co-founded the Vanguard Theater Company, where she serves as Artistic

Dwayne’s performances on Broadway include The Color Purple, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, Rent, and Tarzan the Musical.

He appeared on Broadway and internationally in Smokey Joe’s Café. Dwayne performed with the New York City Opera and internationally as Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess.

Congressman Rush hosts tele-townhall on Coronavirus

United States Congressman Bobby Rush, D-Dist. 1, hosted a telephone Town Hall meeting with his constituents to hear their concerns about the coronavirus, COVID-19.

Dr. Terry Mason, chief operating officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health, and Dr. Brian Patrick Monahan, attending physician for the United States Congress, were also on hand to answer questions.

Questions during the Telephone Town Hall ranged from where to get a coronavirus test, what is being done to produce more masks, how are families being helped, as well as how long the virus can stay on surfaces.

Rush said the simple ways to stop the spread of the virus include washing hands with soap and water, avoid touching your eyes, nose and your mouth, stay home when you are sick, except when you are receiving medical care.

“Practice social distancing by avoiding mass gatherings and maintaining proper distance from others, especially from those who are sick; six feet is the recommended distance you should try to implement,” he said. “Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash; use your elbow, even better than tissue; clean and disinfect frequently

touched objects and surfaces by using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.”

One caller asked about how Congress is helping people who are unable to work or have to stay at home to take care of family members. Rush said Congress introduced the Families First Coronavirus Response Act,

HR6201, which was passed on Thursday, March 18.

“This bill expands the eligibility criterium and coverage for family medical leave, for unemployment insurance and for nutrition assistance programs like SNAP and WIC. I also wrote a letter to the major credit card companies urging them to stop collecting interest and late fees during this pandemic.

Additionally, negotiations are currently on the way for a third package to ensure our health care workforce has what it needs to continue to work and ameliorate service to our constituents,” he said. “Moreover, I am committed to ensure that all workers are protected from the loss of a paycheck and no family falls into financial ruin because of this pandemic. We will achieve this by putting money directly into individuals’ hands who need it the most.”

One caller asked about where to get a free coronavirus test. Mason said to his knowledge, there was not a place to get a free coronavirus test by just walking in and asking to get one. In most cases, he said, you need a doctor’s order or a doctor’s permission to get the test ordered for you.

Rush said under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, there would be coronavirus testing for everyone who needs one,

including the uninsured, free of charge.

Another caller talked about the shortage of masks and rubber gloves and asked where to find these supplies. Rush said the federal government and President Trump have been working to make sure that these items will be manufactured on a larger scale. Mason added that at one time, people could find the N95 masks in paint stores but now, N95 masks and surgical masks are in short supply.

Monahan addressed a caller’s question about how long the virus can stay on surfaces and if the kind of surface makes a difference. On porous surfaces, like carpet, fabric on chairs or cardboard, the virus “lasts only a short time,” Monahan said, “perhaps one to two days at the most.” On hard surfaces, such as countertops or on cell phones, the virus “could persists, in some instances, for many days,” he added. He said one study showed where the virus could last for 7 to 8 days. Monahan also suggested using cleansing wipes, like the kind you find in the store, to wipe down common surfaces in your home.

From Freedom’s Journal to The North Star to John Abbott’s Chicago Defender, African American-owned newspapers have sparked fires for truth and equality that have burned with the passion for fighting for freedom throughout history.

Monday, March 16, 2020 marked the 193rd anniversary of the Black Press of America, whose global impact remains undeniable. It all began with Freedom’s Journal, the first African American newspaper, that was guided by the fearless publishers, John B. Russwurm and Samuel E. Cornish.

On March 16, 1827, Russwurm and Cornish announced the publication’s inaugural issue with a frontpage that contained these words: “We wish to plead our own cause.

Too long have others spoken for us.”

The 4-page edition included stories about the struggle to end the horrors of slavery, lynching, and social injustice. It also informed the African American community of international news of particular interest, like events in Haiti and Sierra Leone. The newspaper featured biographies of African American men and women, schools, jobs, and housing opportunities.

“As we deal with some of the most challenging times in modern history, it is important that we understand the significance of the Black Press in reporting on and recording our history,” said National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Chair, and publisher of the Houston Forward Times, Karen Carter Richards. The NNPA is the national trade association representing America’s Black Press.

“As we celebrate 193 years of being the Voice of Black America, we have made the decision to reschedule Black Press Week due to the unprecedented impact of the Coronavirus. Since the beginning, whether it has been our publishers, editors, journalists, photographers and many others, the Black Press has made the sacrifices and endured the struggles they had to go through in order to publish,” said Richards.

“Even though Freedom’s Journal existed for only two years, its impact on the Black Press has lasted 193 years — and counting,” said Mississippi Link publisher Jackie Hamp-

ton, who also serves as secretary of the NNPA. “I give Freedom’s Journal credit for the establishment of more than 200 African-American-owned newspapers across the nation. The papers not only cover regional, national and international news, but they are still telling the stories that Freedom’s Journal advocated,” Hampton observed. “Those stories include political rights for all Americans, the right to vote for all Americans and the telling of positive stories regarding the accomplishments of African Americans which mainstream newspapers often will not cover.”

Observing Freedom’s Journal’s anniversary traditionally occurs during the NNPA’s Black Press Week, held annually in Washington, DC. This year’s festivities are postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think the founders and editors of Freedom’s Journal would be very proud of the NNPA for deciding to postpone Black Press Week,” Hampton observed. “Because putting the

health and safety of attendees first, regardless of how much we value the significance of Black Press, demonstrates our leadership is in good hands. If we don’t make good decisions for ourselves, then who will?”

“The postponement of Black Press Week activities coincides with the national response to the coronavirus, which is the right thing to do,” added Sonny Messiah Jiles, the publisher of the Houston Defender Network and former chair of the NNPA. “Yet the significance and importance of the Black Press during these times are more relevant than ever before,” Jiles added.

“The virus presents health issues of access to testing, economic issues of job security and family/business income, and sustainability issues of how long this pandemic last. The challenges our country faces today reaffirms the importance of the Black Press of America and of Black Press Week.”

tributions that remain indelibly associated with its fearlessness, determination, and success.

Those contributions include the works of Frederick Douglass, WEB DuBois, Ida B. Wells, Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, and former NNPA Chairman Dr. Carlton Goodlett.

Douglass, who helped slaves escape to the North while working with the Underground Railroad, established the abolitionist paper, The North Star, in Rochester, New York. He developed it into the most influential black antislavery newspaper published during the Antebellum era.

The North Star denounced slavery and fought for the emancipation of women and other oppressed groups with a motto of, “Right is of no Sex – Truth is of no Color; God is the Father of us all, and we are all brethren.”

“In Africa, you had the atrocity of European nations colonizing sovereign states and turning them into satellite copies of their own

nations,” said Rosetta Perry, a civil rights activist and publisher of the Tennessee Tribune.

“That’s one of the reasons why French is spoken so widely on the continent, as well as African nations still using the English monetary system. Black newspapers covered these stories as best they could from afar, but still lacked the resources to send correspondents over to these nations, they often depended on the reports of foreign correspondents from other publications,” she said.

Today, where possible, the Black Press continues to reach across the ocean to forge coalitions with the growing number of websites and special publications that cover Africa daily from on the continent, Perry noted.

The evolution of the Black Press, the oldest Black business in America, had proprietors take on issues of chattel slavery in the 19th century, Jim Crow segregation and lynching, the great northern migration, the Civil Rights Movement, the transformation from the printing press to the digital age and computerized communication.

With the Plessy vs. Ferguson Supreme Court ruling that said no Black man has any rights that a White man must honor, there came a flood of Black publications to advocate for Black rights and to protest the wrongs done to Blacks.

Today, the Black Press continues to tackle domestic and global issues, including the new novel coronavirus pandemic and its effects on all citizens – particularly African Americans.

“This is an important story about the history of the Black Press of America that has consistently been the freedom fighting voice of African people in America and throughout the world for 193 years without waiver or distortion of the truth,” stated NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. “Today, in 2020, amidst the global pandemic of the coronavirus, the Black Press remains the vital source of news and information for 47 million African Americans,” he added.

Chavis continued: “On this momentous anniversary, the NNPA salutes all of the African American-owned newspapers and media companies that are affiliated with the NNPA’s expanding network of over 230 media properties and channels.

“May God continue to bless the Black Press of America.”
