Gregg Bordowitz: I Wanna Be Well From April 4 to July 14, 2019, the Art Institute of Chicago presents Gregg Bordowitz: I Wanna Be Well, a personal and singular thirty-year record of an activist artist living with HIV for more than half of his adult life. Bordowitz began his art practice in the late 1980s in the service of direct advocacy, responding to government inaction toward the AIDS public health crisis. I Wanna Be Well ties together the scope of that interwoven practice: site-specific installation, sculpture, poetry, drawing, performance, ephemera, and the video-making for which he is renowned.

Taking its title from the eponymous track on the Ramones’ 1977 album Rocket to Russia, the exhibition raises broad questions about how we define illness and health in the context of the continuing AIDS crisis. This is the first retrospective of the artist’s prodigious career, which spans three decades of production.

Diagnosed with HIV in 1988 before the availability of antiretroviral drugs, Bordowitz was a founding member of video activist collectives Testing the Limits and DIVA (Damned Interfering Video Activists), advocating health education and harm reduction while documenting ACT UP protests.

He has long used portraits—of himself and others—as a mode of political address, from his

intimate Portraits of People Living with HIV (1992-1995) to the autobiographical improv lecture Only Idiots Smile (2017), both on view.

That connection between art and activism is a conceptual thread uniting Bordowitz’s oeuvre in a sustained investigation of identity, illness, and existence. Bordowitz’s films juxtapose performance and role play with archival footage of protests and recordings of family and friends—some no longer living. He is able to tease out the intersecting facets of identity that shape one’s experience of disease: gender, sexuality, religion, race and ethnicity.

Introspective and social-minded, I Wanna Be Well traces the artist’s own experiences and evolving views in tandem with the development of AIDS activism around the world.

Bordowitz subverts the lurid depictions prevalent in popular media of the time, providing a pessimistic counterpoint in Fast Trip, Long Drop (1993) to the surge of representations in the early 1990s of people “surviving and thriving” with AIDS. Habit (2001) juxtaposes the artist’s daily routine managing HIV with the struggle of South Africa’s leading AIDS activist group Treatment Action Campaign to secure access to affordable prescription drugs.

I Wanna Be Well accommodates these complexities, drawing a direct line from Bordowitz’s documentation of ACT UP protests to

South African coalition-building in the aughts to the current global AIDS crisis. As the banner in Bordowitz’s installation Drive (2002) proclaims: The AIDS Crisis is Still Beginning.

Curators Robyn Farrell and Solveig Nelson underscored the artist’s longstanding interest in video, television, and mass communication.

“Bordowitz’s influential 1987 essay and manifesto ‘Picture a Coalition’ argued for the potential of the medium to represent—or ‘picture’—the possibilities of an emerging social movement,” Nelson remarked, “charging his readers to ‘picture a coalition of people who will end this epidemic.’ This exhibition explores Bordowitz’s expansive concept of portraiture as a mode of political and artistic address.” Added Farrell, “The exhibition spans the Abbott Galleries and the Donna and Howard Stone Gallery for Film, Video, and New Media, extending beyond the Modern Wing to the museum’s Women’s Board Grand Staircase. The artist engages the museum’s space, using strategies found in conceptual and feminist art to open a dialogue between art and activism.”

Gregg Bordowitz is a professor in the Video, New Media, and Animation department and director of the Low-Residency MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I Wanna Be Well includes rare selec-

tions of ephemera from the artist’s personal archive. Bordowitz will complete a unique wall drawing for the exhibition and will give three performance-lectures on April 5, 6, and 7 at 6:30 PM in the Price Auditorium. The performance series Some Styles of Masculinity explores the intersection of ethnic, gender, sexual, and national identities as modes of Jewish personalities (“the rock star, the rabbi, the comedian”) in the format of televised stand-up comedy.

Free Prom Dress Giveaway For South Suburban Teens Continued from page 1

Attending prom in high school is oftentimes referred to as a right of passage for teenagers, but for many struggling families, prom season can come with a great deal of financial stress.

As a way to relieve some of that pressure on low-income families, Chéz Délali Salon and Day Spa will be hosting their 6th Annual Prom Dress Giveaway for high school seniors on March 24th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WaddieAnn Venue, 4304 W. Lincoln Hwy., in Matteson.

“The parents and young girls are very thankful and appreciative of our Prom Dress

Giveaway because so many of them would like to attend these activities but just the thought of putting that extra cost on their families that are already struggling makes them not want to go even though they really would like to,” said Adodo Robinson, owner of Chéz Délali Salon and Day Spa. The Prom Dress Giveaway is open to high school seniors and the only requirement to receive a free dress is for the students to show their current high school identification on the day of the event.

All of the dresses are donated and along with receiving a free dress the young women are able to pick out shoes, handbags, and jewelry to complete their outfit.

In addition to providing free prom dresses

and accessories, the Salon has partnered with the current Miss Illinois Teen USA titleholder, A’Maiya Allen, who has been helping to promote the event and will share her story with the young girls that attend the giveaway.

Allen has lead initiatives such as Jeans for Teens to collect jeans for homeless teens, hosted a Saturday Night Sleep Out to bring awareness to teen homelessness, and launched High Heels High Hopes to promote confidence and self-love for young girls through education, elegance, and service.

“I want the young teens that come to not only find a dress but be able to meet A’Maiya and talk to her and see what it is that she has done and still continues to do,” said Robinson.

Robinson believes that having A’Maiya at

the event to talk with the teenagers will help them to build their own self-esteem and show them that their lives and ideas do matter and that they too can set goals that go beyond their community.

The young girls who attend the Prom Dress Giveaway often share with Robinson their appreciation for being able to receive a free dress and the joy that it brings them.

“It warms my heart and makes me understand that what I’m doing effects and touches them in a positive way,” said Robinson. “It’s a great feeling to be able to be part of that and to see the camaraderie between these girls that come from different communities and become friends or just open up and help each other without judgment. I love that.”

NABJ’s Call for Diversity at CNN Grows WASHINGTON, D.C. – Color of Change, a national online force driven by more than 1.4 million members, is joining the National Association of Black Journalists’ (NABJ) call for a civil rights audit at CNN and more black representation among its news leadership.

“When there’s more of us in the room fighting for our stories to be told, and raising awareness about the issues impacting our communities, we have an even better chance of creating change and ending the practices that unfairly hold us back,” said Color of Change in a statement released on Twitter.

“We support @NABJ as they call for a civil rights audit and put pressure on @CNN President Jeff Zucker to make diversity and inclusion improvements at the network.”

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., with more than 120,000 members, has also joined the fight. In a statement released recently, the organization said it “shares the concern of the National Association of Black Journalists about the lack of black representation within the ranks of CNN’s executive news managers and direct reports to CNN President Jeff Zucker. As an organization specifically concerned with the issues affecting the African-American community, we lend our voices to those who would encourage constructive dialogue regarding creating an inclusive workplace at CNN.” One of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., also made comments on the issue on Twitter, stating, “@CNN Pres Zucker refused to meet w/a

#StopThisShame, #GirlsAtDhaba, #WhyLoiter and more: women’s fight against sexual harassment didn’t start with #MeToo tests to street demonstrations. Text messages, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter hashtags such as #Nirbhaya and #StopThisShame were used to express a collective rage and mobilize people.

Just two months after allegations of sexual abuse against Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein came to light in a 2017 New York Times article, women in at least 85 countries began using the the hashtag #MeToo, to speak against sexual harassment.

In China, sexual misconduct accusations led to the firing of a professor at a top university and the resignation of a high-profile Buddhist monk. In Egypt, it was a highly regarded leader of the Arab Spring who was forced to resign. And in India, sexual misconduct accusations caused a major uproar in Bollywood and forced the resignation of a leading politician and minister.

While the success of #MeToo testifies to the power of social media in putting the spotlight on the culture of misogyny across the world, as a scholar who studies feminism, I know it’s not the first movement of its kind.

Women in countries such as India, Pakistan and others have long organized successful campaigns against sexual harassment.

Campaigns in India In 2009 Indian women organized a successful campaign called #PinkChaddi, or “pink underwear,” against the culture of moral policing by Sriram Sene, a right-wing group that attacked young women in bars and young unmarried couples in public spaces on Valentine’s day.

Through a Facebook campaign, Nisha Susan, an employee of India’s leading investigative political magazine Tehelka invited women to send this right-wing group pink underwear on Valentine’s Day. The campaign caught women’s attention across the country and resulted in more than 2,000 women sending pink underwear to the group.

In another campaign called #PinjraTod: Break the Locks, female students in Delhi came together in 2015 to protest sexist curfew rules in university halls. The students said the rules were used to stifle the freedom of wom-

en as the only way to deal with the culture of sexual violence.

At the time, the campaign forced university authorities to relax some of the rules. And today, it has grown into a larger movement across India’s major cities for bringing in meaningful policies against sexual harassment.

The biggest campaign came in 2012, in the aftermath of the gang rape and murder of the 23-year-old medical student Jyoti Singh on the streets of Delhi. The brutal rape triggered an unprecedented nationwide outcry, mostly by middle-class India. The protests forced the government to change its law against rape. They also led to enhanced penalties for offenders and criminalization of stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks on women.

Central to this protest was the role played by social media in urban India where women had long been frustrated by corruption and rising crimes. Since early 2000s, young tech-savvy millennial women had been agitating online against the culture of sexual violence in the country. The 2012 incident became a flashpoint.

While mainstream media coverage of the rape intensified the movement, it was digital activism that moved people from online pro-

by AASHA, the Alliance Against Sexual Harassment is one of the earliest such examples.

Another such campaign #GirlsAtDhaba, launched in 2015 by a group of feminists, called on women to be more visible in public spaces. It invited Pakistani women to post their pictures having tea at roadside tea stalls.

The #GirlsAtDhaba campaign was inspired by the #WhyLoiter campaign in India, that advocates for women’s right to be on the streets of India for pleasure. Both these movements challenged the domination of public spaces by men, which often results in women’s increased sexual harassment.

Other countries Similar digital campaigns against sexual harassment took place in many other emerging economies before #MeToo. In Latin America, women led powerful movements such as #MeuAmigoSecreto and #MeoQueridoProfessor against everyday sexism at home and in public places, including universities.

In China, a 25-year-old woman Li Maizi was arrested in 2015 for distributing pamphlets on sexual harassment in urban public transport, prompting a global social media outcry.

In the Middle East, since the 2011 Arab Spring, women have used personal blogs to protest the social and political policing of gender.

Examples include Tunisian Amina Shoui’s uploading of pictures of her topless body inscribed by “We Don’t Need Your Di-mocracy.”

She deliberately parsed the word democracy

to protest against the “mock” democracy and also to indicate that she was prepared to “die.”

The issues that remain Despite the success of many of these campaigns, there are many complex issues that need to be addressed.

For example, media reports from India show that women from the lower castes continue to face sexual assault, often violent, for daring to refuse sexual advances of upper-caste men.

In Pakistan, women have faced serious backlash over public accusations of sexual harassment. A leading pop star Meena Shafi and the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid faced abusive online trolling when they tweeted about sexual harassment.

A stigma around rape and a sexist legal system often discourages most women in Pakistan from calling out their sexual abusers.

Recognizing global campaigns In projecting #MeToo as a global phenomenon, the international media often implies that it was the West that helped mobilize women around sexual violence and gave it a name.

This belief reinforces what Nigerian-American writer Teju Cole has referred to, in a different context, as the “white-savior industrial complex” – a colonial mindset that does not acknowledge to this day the role played by Western dominance in reinforcing women’s subordination in the non-Western world.

Further, it obscures a large number of anti-sexism movements that have long been led by women in different parts of the world.

As Ghanaian writer and women’s rights activist Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah says: Rather than a movement, #MeToo is only a moment – albeit an important one – which has a long way to go.

NEWS Hutchinson teaming with Assessor Fritz Kaegi on reforms to property tax system SPRINGFIELD – With property tax bills continuing to climb across Illinois, State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) is working with newly elected Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi on a set of reforms to Illinois’ antiquated property tax system.

“Anyone who owns property in Illinois understands how outdated and regressive our property tax system is,” Hutchinson said. “It is something

we all know and discuss, but have done little to address. This proposal would take a meaningful step forward to increase accuracy and transparency for Illinois taxpayers.”

Hutchinson has introduced Senate Bill 1379, which is a comprehensive set of reforms to Cook County’s property tax system. While the proposal would primarily apply to Cook County, all Illinois counties would have the

ability to adopt the requirements.

Senate Bill 1379 would improve data collection by giving the Cook County Assessor’s Office the ability to collect operating income and expense data to more accurately deliver property assessments. The change would bring Cook County and Illinois in line with professional practices in other states and cities, including Washington D.C., Boston and Seattle. www.thechicagocitizen.com

estate participants while boosting transparency, creating valuable market data and improving our state’s investment climate and reputation.”

Senate Bill 1379 was heard recently in the Senate Revenue Committee where it passed without opposition. Hutchinson has vowed to continue working with stakeholders in the weeks ahead before calling the proposal for a final vote.

Bankers Life Study: Boomers are More Prepared for Death Than Life - And It’s Not Getting Better Today’s baby boomers are more financially prepared for death than life, according to the latest research from the Bankers Life Center for a Secure Retirement®. The new study by the national insurance provider revealed that 81% of middle-income boomers have made at least one formal preparation for when they pass away, while only 32% have a plan for how they will receive care in retirement, should they need it.

The new study, A Growing Urgency: Retirement Care Realities for Middle-Income Boomers, surveyed 1,500 middle-income baby boomers about their expectations and financial preparedness for retirement and long-term care, and caregiving expectations.

As 10,000 Americans continue to turn 65 each day, retirement care—whether at home or in a facility, due to injury, chronic illness or decline in physical or cognitive function—is becoming an increasingly urgent issue for which boomers need to plan and address. By a certain age, most Americans will not only need medical and preventive care but will also require ongoing care in retirement from a home healthcare provider, in an assisted living facility or nursing home. Key findings in the study include:

l Just 18% of boomers report that planning for retirement care is a high priority. l 45% of boomers expect they will need long-term care at some point—but according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, someone turning 65 today has an almost 70% chance of needing some type of long-term care in their lifetime. l 30% of boomers surveyed have less than $1,000 saved for a financial emergency. l 74% of boomers are somewhat or very confident in their ability to manage their and their spouse’s healthcare costs as they age, however, 79% of boomers have no money set aside specifically for their long-term care needs.

“Although nearly half of middle-income boomers believe they will need retirement care someday, almost 80% do not have savings for that care,” said Scott Goldberg, president of Bankers Life. “As the survey shows, there is a growing urgency to educate boomers on the need to prepare for their retirement. Pre-retirees and boomers need to review their retirement

plans and consider not only how they plan to spend their time and money for enjoying retirement, but to also consider unexpected healthcare expenses that can often drain retirement savings.”

Boomers confused about the cost of health care The Bankers Life Center for a Secure Retirement survey results indicate a knowledge gap among middle-income boomers about the costs of retirement care, possibly contributing to the lack of it being a priority. According to the survey, four out of ten middle-income boomers could not even guess at the cost of a home health aide (42%). A third couldn’t provide an average monthly cost of nursing home care (35%).

In addition, more than half (56%) of boomers mistakenly believe that Medicare will pay for their ongoing long-term care. In truth, Medicare does not pay for ongoing long-term care services.

The urgency for boomers to have a plan for their retirement care is growing as more and more retire every day and get closer to the age when they or their partner will likely need longterm care. According to the survey, boomers expect that they will start to need assistance via home modifications around age 70, with care in

a nursing home coming around age 84.

“The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services estimates that boomers will face an average of $138,000 in long-term care costs over the course of their lifetime. These large sums can negatively impact the financial security of retirees, as well as take an emotional and financial toll on their loved ones,” Goldberg said.

“Even if pre-retirees and boomers have taken steps to build a financial plan for their retirement income, they should not consider their plans complete until they discuss retirement care. This includes their wishes for how and where they want to receive care, and how to pay for it. There are many tools and resources that can help boomers better understand and plan for care in retirement. It’s never too late to better understand their current healthcare coverage and to prepare for the effects of aging.”

Demystifying Student Performance Via Parental Engagement

Once students reach middle school, parents often become less engaged with their child’s academic environment.

They don’t walk them in the school’s doors anymore, they don’t communicate as often with teachers, and they are less like to visit the school unless there is a special program or sporting event after hours. This is especially true for African American parents.

As a former classroom teacher in an urban, predominantly Black school, I have first-hand knowledge of this. During middle school, school becomes more or less a mystery to parents. However, under Every Student Succeeds Act, there is a push for parents to be more involved with academic environment of their child.

Studies show that when parents are more actively involved in their child’s schools, the child tends to perform better academically. Therefore, parental engagement is an important concept of discussion in terms of African American children’s performance.

Although parental engagement has a strong correlation to student academic performance and achievement, why is it that African American parents appear disproportionately less

engaged than parents of other races?

Studies have shown that there are many factors that may hinder Black parents from being active in their child’s schooling. Factors include lacking confidence when speaking to education professionals or fear of seeming incompetent, being the sole provider in the household with work hours that conflict with school hours, and not knowing how to approach school officials with proper questions specific to individual child concerns.

These and many other nuisances keep Black parents from approaching schools to be more active in their child’s academic career. Nevertheless, for the sake of maximum student success and potential, it is important

that parents are actively engaged in their child’s schooling.

It is imperative that Black parents are not only involved but also engaged in their child’s schools. Parents must not only be involved through participating in school-planned functions, but they must also create their own spaces and opportunities for active engagement to demystify student performance. There are many ways to do so, which include: 1. Use school system provided platforms to keep up with grades.The school system may provide this service for free, and it may be associated with a special code or password for log in.

quently checking student grades and holding them accountable for their grades can send strong messages to students in terms of performance.

2. Know when reports cards are due.School systems may send home a calendar with this information, they may provide automated calls as a reminder, and the dates may be readily accessible on the school system website. It is ultimately up to the parents to stay abreast of report cards and not wait until the last grading quarter to show concern over grades.

It’s too late then.

3. Email teachers.Email is a quick form of communication that most people use directly from their phones.

Most teachers use emails frequently.

Make use of this to maintain constant contact and communication with your child’s teacher. Most teachers prefer to hear from parents with concerns of student progress and would happily engage to inform parents concerning their children.

4. Check teacher webpages. Many teachers have webpages that they frequently update with pertinent information pertaining to their classroom. This information may include due dates, skills and concepts to be covered, and materials needed for upcoming projects and assignments.

5. Create a parent network. Many

parents may not have the time or resources to be involved with the formal PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

They may decide to create social media groups that keep all parents abreast of current happenings within the school. This could be a simple, easy way to connect to other parents of students within same educational setting for accurate, current information concerning the child’s school.

Regardless, of the age or grade of a parent’s child, parents have a right to know about the current happenings of the classroom and school. However, the school and parent relationship shouldn’t be one-sided with school doing all of the work in terms of providing the opportunities for parents to become engaged. Parents must understand the importance of their involvement in their child’s educational trajectory, take the reins, and create their opportunities for being actively involved.

Although, middle school is the time when most parents become less engaged in the child’s school, it should be a time when parents maintain engagement. To demystify further, parent involvement weighs heavily on children’s performance. And simply put, children need to see parents in their academic spaces for better performance, even in middle school and beyond.
