John Brown was a violent crusader, but he blazed a moral path that the cautious Lincoln followed to end slavery American political leaders of his day, Brown shunned compromise and accommodation and instead was driven by an unwavering commitment to moral principle.

One of the most underappreciated figures in the nation’s history, John Brown, has been introduced to Americans by the recent Showtime series “The Good Lord Bird,” based on the James McBride novel of the same name.

Too often dismissed as a failed zealot, Brown was an unconventional anti-slavery leader who blazed a trail that Abraham Lincoln would follow just a few years later.

Commentators then and now are more likely to see differences between Lincoln’s and Brown’s approaches to civic leadership. Lincoln was cautious and deliberate; Brown was a revolutionary on fire.

Though this contrast is instructive, there’s another way to look at both men. In the end, they were both moral crusaders who exercised uncompromising moral leadership.

Unwavering commitment John Brown was a leading white abolitionist who engaged in many peaceful efforts to free and assist enslaved African Americans before the Civil War. But his methods eventually shifted. In 1856, a 55-year-old Brown joined two of his sons in the Kansas territory and led anti-slavery paramilitary forces to victory in the violent period that became known as “Bleeding Kansas.”

In 1859, Brown’s abolitionist efforts culminated in a raid on a federal armory at Harpers Ferry in what is now West Virginia. This was the first step in Brown’s broader plan to emancipate slaves throughout the South. The attempt was unsuccessful, and Brown was captured, tried and hanged shortly thereafter.

In a speech delivered at Harpers Ferry more than 20 years later, abolitionist Frederick Douglass claimed

that “John Brown began the war that ended American slavery and made this a free Republic.”

Defending his positive view of Brown’s turn to violence, Douglass explained that Brown was an “agent” of God’s “retributive justice.” Douglass argued that a higher logic – what Brown referred to as the “law of God” – provided a special justification and vindication for Brown’s actions.

As I have explored at length elsewhere, such higher-law arguments to justify actions are more than mere rhetoric in the service of political causes. They have been carefully developed throughout the history of political thought by some of the most profound thinkers from around the world, and from ancient times to our own.

Brown possessed – or, perhaps better, was possessed by – a clarity of moral principle that simply ruled out inaction or compromise in the face of grave injustice. One of Brown’s refrains was “Whenever there is a right thing to be done, there is a ‘thus saith the Lord’ that it shall be done.”

When questioned about his motives by federal authorities following his capture, Brown said simply: “We came to free the slaves, and only that.”

In stark contrast to the great

Statesman versus radical The greatest American political leader of the mid-19th century was Abraham Lincoln, who was elected to the presidency the year following Brown’s famous raid. If Brown began the war that ended slavery, Lincoln is the man who finished it.

The inextricable link between the two anti-slavery leaders was forged, in fact, years earlier and hundreds of miles away on the plains of Kansas.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and its repeal of the Missouri Compromise was “like a fire bell in the night” for both Brown and Lincoln.

By allowing slavery to be legalized by popular vote in new states north of the Missouri Compromise line, this law sparked a flood of settlers to the Kansas territory who were determined to tip the scales either for or against slavery.

Given the highly polarized nature of the issue of slavery by this time, many of these new settlers were prepared to engage in violence to influence the outcome of the vote.

The ensuing conflict drew Brown into direct, violent confrontation with proponents of slavery for the first time.

And the federal government’s new openness to slavery’s extension beyond the existing states transformed the issue of slavery from being a “minor question” in Lincoln’s mind to the centerpiece of his political thought and career.

While debating political rival Stephen Douglas a few years later, Lincoln stated the importance of moral principle to his campaign with Brown-like simplicity and clarity: “The real issue in this controversy is the sentiment on the part of one

class that looks upon the institution of slavery as a wrong, and of another class that does not look upon it as a wrong.”

In other words, according to Lincoln, abstract legal doctrines relating to states’ rights or the nature of the constitutional union were, at best, secondary. Opposite opinions about the morality of slavery drove the controversy that would result in the Civil War. And yet, in his Cooper Union Address in 1860 – the speech that would catapult him to the presidency – Lincoln was at pains to distance himself from Brown.

“John Brown was no Republican,” said Lincoln, the party’s leader. He was a deluded madman who convinced himself that he was “commissioned by Heaven” to liberate the enslaved.

Lincoln presented himself as the clearheaded, prudent statesman who would work within the legal framework to combat the moral evil of slavery; Brown was the dangerous radical who would indiscriminately destroy both.

Distance vanishes between Lincoln and Brown Yet five years later, as Lincoln unknowingly entered what would be the final weeks of his life, his differences with Brown appeared to narrow.

Lincoln had fought tirelessly in January 1865 for the passage in the House of Representatives of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, using every tool at his disposal to influence reluctant members.

In the first week of February, Lincoln approved Congress’ resolution to move the 13th Amendment forward to ratification and rejected a Confederate peace proposal. As the Civil War raged on and thousands of additional lives were lost, Lincoln seemed to focus his energy not on securing the peace, but on

abolishing slavery.

Lincoln had achieved just what Brown had attempted in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry: abolition through violent conflict with slaveholders.

Lincoln’s second inaugural address the following month, moreover, framed the Civil War in precisely the same terms Brown had used to justify his actions. In this speech, Lincoln casts himself as a mere agent in the service of God’s providential plan to punish the evil of slavery.

With the 13th Amendment on its way to ratification, all that remained was the fulfillment of divine justice, Lincoln said – a mystical moment of equilibrium when “all the wealth piled by the bond-man’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk,” and “every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword.”

In his final words on the defining event of his political career, the distance between Lincoln and Brown all but vanishes. Brown’s “thus saith the Lord” echoes clearly in Lincoln’s concluding prayer: “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.”

Lincoln appreciated the prudent statesmanship of pre-Civil War politicians such as Henry Clay, but the defining quality of Lincoln’s leadership was forged of less pliable stuff. Lincoln was ultimately more crusader than compromiser.

In this way, he and John Brown share a model of moral leadership that is still worthy of study, even in the 21st century.

Waiting for Vaccines, New Data Shows Black, Latino and Asian American Seniors Dying of COVID-19 at Alarmingly Higher Rates Continued from page 1 As older adults anxiously await vaccines to protect them, African American/Black, Latino and Asian American older adults in Chicago and statewide are getting sick and dying of COVID-19 at rates much higher than their share of the population, according to new data from AARP Illinois, the Chicago Urban League, The Resurrection Project and Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago released recently.

The sobering statistics – evidence that longstanding inequities have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic – have prompted the creation of a collaboration to urge officials and influencers across the state to find ways to create systemic policy changes on behalf of, and with, older adults of color.

“The disproportionate number of Illinois’ older adults of color dying from COVID-19, while heartbreaking, is not an anomaly,” said Rosanna Marquez, AARP Illinois State volunteer president. “It is evidence of longstanding inequities, from the social conditions that lead to poor health to unequal access to quality care, to limited economic resources, which have existed for years.”

During a press conference, Marquez and leaders from the groups pledged to do their part to “Disrupt Disparities” in Illinois and create an Illinois where older adults across communities can age with the economic stability, health care resources and digital connectivity they need to lead healthy, stable and rewarding lives. They were joined by Illinois Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins, Senator Robert Peters, Representative Theresa Mah and other elected officials.

“We’ve seen that racial economic disparities can accumulate over the course of someone’s lifetime to create widening wealth gaps in communities of color,” said Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Y. Collins.” This study of the experiences and needs of older adults of color is an essential first step in creating an Illinois where older adults can age with financial security, healthcare that meets their needs and the digital resources they need to lead healthy, productive and rewarding lives.”

“The COVID-19 public health crisis has wreaked havoc on our older adults of color, and has brought to the forefront the deep disparities that exist in these communities in the areas of health, economic security, and connectivity,” said Illinois State Senator Robert Peters. “It has never been more important or more urgent to bring about the systemic and struc-

tural change needed to promote equitable solutions for older adults of color and their families.”

“Older adults of color have suffered from the effects of disparities that lead to health problems, unequal access to reliable health care and limited economic resources for far too long,” said State Representative Theresa Mah. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us all the devastating impact of these inequities, and that urgent action must be taken to ensure that our adults of color can live healthy and fulfilling lives.”

Collaborators on the “Disrupt Disparities” initiative called for immediate action and recommended policy solutions for many of the disparities outlined in the report.

“We’re proud to be a collaborator on this groundbreaking report that shows how structural inequities are impacting older adults across communities of color, including the Asian American community,” said Andy Kang, executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago. “Asian Americans are often left out of conversations regarding racial disparities due to the ‘model minority’ myth, when in fact, many are suffering due to economic disparities, lack of resources, and other factors. This report emphasizes the need not only for more data on Asian American communities, but more disaggregated data, to really understand the impact of these disparities on our communities.”

“We already knew the pandemic was having a disproportionate impact on Black and Brown communities. Through this collaboration, we now have research and data that show that senior members in communities of color are perishing at disproportionate rates due to unequal access to healthcare and other longstanding disparities,” said Karen Freeman- Wilson, president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “This cannot be acceptable.

We must have action to address these disparities and improve the quality of life for older individuals who often are the backbone of our communities.”

“This pandemic has exposed and exacerbated widening inequities.

In many of our Black and Brown communities, there is limited access to high-quality healthcare, the digital literacy gap is high, and the economic disparities have yet to be addressed,” said Raul Raymundo, CEO of The Resurrection Project. “It’s very important that our elected officials understand that any recovery effort is seen as an investment in addressing

these inequities over the long-term.”

According to the new data, deep disparities exist in the areas of : COVID-19: While African American/Black Chicagoans in the 50+ age range account for 7.5% of all recorded COVID-19 cases, they constitute 39.3% of deaths despite representing 37% of Chicagoans 50 and older between March and Dec. 31, 2020.

Hispanic older adults in Chicago accounted for 21% of the population 50 and over, yet made up 31.4% of infections and 32.5% of deaths from COVID-19.

Economic stability: African American/Black seniors are three times more likely to live in poverty, Latinos and Asian Americans are almost twice as likely as whites.

Almost half of African American, Latino and Asian homeowners over 80 in IL still hold mortgages on their homes, twice as many as whites.

Health: In Illinois, African American/

Blacks, Latinos, and Asian Americans suffer significantly higher rates of chronic diseases than their white counterparts. In Chicago, 75 percent of older African Americans and 64 of older Latinos are diagnosed with hypertension.

But older adults of color have limited access to high-quality health care. In urban areas, healthcare providers are concentrated in white neighborhoods; in more rural areas, whites are three times more likely to have access to a car – the highest of any racial or ethnic group.

Connectivity: More than a third of Illinois African American/Blacks and Latinos over 65 have no internet access at all at home.

The groundbreaking data – the first time all available research on disparities for older adults was collected for such purposes – was compiled by researchers at the Center for Urban Research & Learning, Loyola University Chicago in late 2020.

The group will host a Disrupt Disparities summit in partnership with the Illinois Department on Aging on April 26-27, hold regular community convenings across the state (Feb. 24, March 3, March 24 and April 10) and engage lawmakers on developing policies to address the problems.

“It’s never been more evident that systematic changes are needed to help Illinois’ residents of color to live the same longer, healthier and more productive lives as their white counterparts,” Marquez said.

NEWS Walgreens Expressions Creative Art Contest Expands to High School Students Across the Country Program encourages teens to use creative expression as a means for coping with challenging situations Deerfield, Ill. - February 16, 2021 – More than 10 years ago Walgreens launched its first Expressions Challenge program to encourage teens to use creative arts as an outlet to manage some of life’s stressful circumstances and to guide students to make better life choices. Offered only in Chicago and St. Louis, Walgreens worked with high school districts, teachers and guidance counselors to promote the contest to students grades 9-12. This year, for the first time ever, Expressions is being offered nationally. Submissions are being accepted now through March 31, with 12 winners from three categories to be awarded $2,000 each. Winners will be selected and announced in May 2021.

Formed in 2009, the Expressions Challenge is a creative arts competition in three categories, including visual arts, video production, and spoken word.

Teens are guided to use time spent working on their creations as outlets for expressing difficulties they are facing.

Students’ finished works often address a range of issues from bullying and self-image, to the rapid spread of HIV. Teens today still face these circumstances and more, and for many, their anxieties are compounded by the effects of COVID-19.

“Expressions was created for moments like these. Our country is dealing with the weight of a pandemic that has been so challenging that one can only imagine how young people must feel.

Every year, Expressions proves to be more rewarding than the previous year, and Walgreens is pleased to extend this support to teens at a time when our nation could use more compassion and healing,” said John Standley, president, Walgreens.

This year the program includes a Specialty Award category for submissions that explore the impact of COVID-19. The lucky winner of this category will receive $1,000 for the

NEWS NEWS Mayor Lightfoot and CDPH Announce Significant Improvement in Racial Equity in Vaccine Distribution Half of vaccine administered in the most recent week went to Black or Latinx Chicagoans Racial equity has been the driving force behind the city’s COVID-19 vaccination roll-out and Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Chicago Department of Public Health today announced significant improvement in the percentage of vaccine administered to Chicagoans of color. These improvements are the result of the City being laser-focused on ensuring equity in its COVID response and vaccine distribution, and the work it has been doing with many community partners including through the Racial Equity Rapid Response Team (RERRT) and its Protect Chicago Plus initiative.

Early in the vaccine roll-out, in phase 1a when the focus was on healthcare workers and long-term care facility staff and residents, only 18% of COVID vaccines were going to Black or Latinx Chicagoans.

Now, data from the most recent week shows that 50% of first dose COVID vaccine went to Black or Latinx Chicagoans.

“Over the past month, we have doubled down on our efforts to not only drive vaccines into communities that need them most but ensure that our vaccination rates match the demographics of our city,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “The significant progress we have made is undoubtedly thanks to our equity-based vaccine strategy—which includes a number of initiatives, individuals, organizations and community engagement tactics. Though we still have a long way to go before we can fully achieve equity, this progress serves as an important reminder that the surest path to truly recovering and healing from this terrible pandemic is one that is built with equity at its foundation.”

In December, the race/ethnicity of individuals

who had received a first dose of the vaccine was as follows: Latinx 9.8%; Black, non-Latinx 8.1%; White, non-Latinx 59.4%; Asian, non-Latinx 15.1%. Since then, the City has seen major improvements in percent of first doses administered and is closer to reflecting the racial/ethnic demographics of the city.

For doses administered in the most recent week these numbers are: Latinx 26.2%; Black, non-Latinx 23.6%, White, non-Latinx 41.4%; Asian non-Latinx 5.6%.

“From the beginning of the pandemic we’ve focused our attention and resources to those communities where we were seeing the highest case rates and the greatest number of deaths, and unfortunately they mirrored the inequities we see in society overall,” said CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D. “We’ve made good progress in these same areas with lowering

case rates and now with ensuring vaccine is getting where it’s needed most, and that work will continue.”

Cumulative data since the start of the vaccine rollout shows the race/ethnicity of individuals who have received a first dose in Chicago is: Latinx 18.1%; Black, non-Latinx 19.1%; White, non-Latinx 40.8%; Asian, non-Latinx 6.7; other, non-Latinx 3.6%; Unknown 11.8%.

Early on in the pandemic, the city created the RERRT to deploy resources to the most impacted communities and connect with community partners on the ground to share information about COVID-19, distribute personal protective equipment and work to stem the spread of the virus. This work has continued with the vaccine, and the City last month also launched its Protect Chicago Plus program, which targets vaccine supply and additional resources to 15 neighborhoods that have been most burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic, based on the City’s COVID vulnerability index (CCVI).

As part of Protect Chicago Plus, the City is collaborating with local community groups in each priority neighborhood to establish a dedicated vaccination strategy that will include a fixed vaccination site and special vaccine events, hosted by trusted community members such as faith institutions and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). The City allocates additional first doses of vaccine in the Protect Chicago Plus community each week to support these events, which are open only to local residents.

who have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of COVID in our communities,” said Dan Fulwiler, President and CEO of Esperanza Health Centers. “Since opening our newest vaccination center in Gage Park, we at Esperanza have been both heartened and humbled by the incredible work of our local community groups like the Southwest Organizing Project and the Gage Park Latinx Council, and by the wonderful support from the city of Chicago that is allowing us to bring vaccine to those who need it most.”

The first community targeted under Protect Chicago Plus was Belmont Cragin, where the City partnered with Northwest Side Housing Center, Oak Street Health and Lurie Children’s Hospital to host vaccination clinics and register residents for vaccination over the past couple weekends.

This week, the City opened temporary vaccination clinics in Gage Park, in partnership with Esperanza Health Centers, and in North Landale, in partnership with Lawndale Christian Health Center.

Looking ahead, the City will be collaborating with community organizations, faith leaders, health care providers and employers in order to deliver successful vaccine clinics and events in the remaining Protect Chicago Plus communities: Archer Heights, Austin, Back of the Yards, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Humboldt Park, Little Village, Montclare, Roseland, South Deering, Washington Heights, and West Englewood.

Make a Profit from Renting Out Your RV NewsUSA - Recreational Vehicles, or RVs, are a great way to experience a unique method of travel across the country, a welcome departure from the typical resort vacation for many.

Thousands of Americans discovered the RV lifestyle in 2020 and RVs emerged as the go-to choice for U.S. travelers.

The surge in popularity bodes well for those who own RVs. Ninety percent of RVs in the U.S. are driven by their owners for less than 30 days per year, allowing for their vehicles to be rented to travelers who hold concerns over safely flying on a plane or staying in a hotel during the pandemic.

RV rental marketplace RVshare, listing more than 100,000 individually owned RVs across the country, experienced an unprecedented 1,600 percent increase in bookings between April and June, alone.

The by-product of that popularity has led to an increase in profitability for RV owners, choosing to rent their rigs to adventurous travelers for some extra money in their pocket.

In a recent survey of RV owners renting their vehicles on RVshare, three-quarters of those reported more income in 2020 than in 2019.

owners pay for the entire cost of owning their RV. And the word is spreading. Twenty percent of RV owners began renting their vehicles specifically because of the pandemic. What’s more, RVshare reports 14 percent of RV owners purchased a vehicle with the intention to

rent because of the financial opportunity.

From May to August, RV owner Karson Nance, based in Austin, Texas, reported earning more than $30,000 after booking a Winnebago Minnie Winnie Class C for the entire summer of 2020.

“When the pandemic hit, I didn’t know

what to expect, but I never thought we would have a record year,” says Nance. “RVshare made it easy to manage customers and keep the calendar full. Because of our success, we were able to pay down our units this year and, in turn, we invested in more units to capitalize on the growing demand for RV rentals.”

Those interested in kicking the tires on an RV purchase ask, which vehicles make the most money? Class A vehicles, given their large size and luxurious amenities, are the highest earners at an average of $60,000 per year. More commonly owned Class C vehicles, a mid-sized motor home, grosses $45,000 per year. Class B vehicles, or camper vans, are able to make $40,000 per year.

Based on location, RVs vary in demand.

Love and Life Inspire Success for Two Black Women Entrepreneurs

(BPT) - Two rising, women entrepreneurs Jena Holliday and Kalilah Wright - have found their voice and are using it to spread Black joy, solidify Black representation in retail and shine a spotlight on what success looks like. With the help of Target, Holliday and Wright's stories are being told via the retailer's Black History Month campaign, celebrating the creators building Black economic vitality and leaving a strong legacy for future generations.

With just a bit of faith, illustrator and author Jena Holliday walked away from her mainstream marketing job to embrace her passion for art. What started as a hobby eventually evolved into a fulltime commitment of spreading kindness and hope through her drawings depicting Black women. That commitment blossomed into a blog, aptly named Spoonful of Faith, and has thus become not only a successful business but a cultural beacon.

"Authenticity is the most valuable quality to me," said Holliday. "Portraying Black women as raw and honest is what I know how to do, and I feel it shows other aspiring creators to lean into who they uniquely are. We are all unique and not meant to be like everyone else." Holliday's parents taught her that from a young age, which she feels freed her creative spirit and drives her to positively impact the Black community.

Holliday wants her journey and her illustrations to motivate others, especially young Black women, to face fear and find their voice. "Your voice matters, your culture matters, your background and experience matter," she said. "You matter because you are here."

Her business, started in 2014, took time to emerge into what it is today. For those looking to emulate Holliday's journey, her sage advice satisfies both the emotional and professional ambition it requires

to take that leap of faith and start paving a new path. * Start small: "A start is a start.

Remember to accept and work with what you have and create the best version of you and your talent that you can right now. A spoonful is all you need to start." * Be honest: "If you understand yourself 100%, including what you can and cannot carry, you'll produce great work. And, be honest with your support team and let them know where you need help." * Trust your uniqueness: "Believe you are creative and listen to your heart. Creativity shows up in so many ways, so don't be afraid to try things that fall out of your wheelhouse." * Live life: "Try new creative outlets to help nurture your personal spirit. Read books, watch movies, draw, write poetry, dance, sing, laugh or listen. Find the joy in living by nourishing your soul."

Unafraid to use her words to send a message, activist and apparel designer Kalilah Wright bottles authentic and unapologetic phrases about being Black in every clear canister from her company Mess in a Bottle. Printed proudly across the front of her tops, declarations like, "A Black Woman Created This" and "There Are Those Who Will Change History, And Those Who Will Be Sad They Didn't Try" give a voice to the voiceless and allow people to express themselves without having to say anything at all.

Like her clothing, Wright offers no-nonsense insight for others striving for Black success. * Find your authenticity: "Success looks different for everyone, so march to the beat of your own drum - people will listen." * Embrace the courage to keep going: "Fear can handicap you but only if you let it; always be moving f orward." * Utilize the tools you have: "Resources and money don't have to be abundant but be resourceful and budget concise every step of the way." * Stay business minded: "Keep focused on business first and know that if the business succeeds, then you will have another platform from which you can speak your truth."

Holliday and Wright credit much of their success to strong Black female mentorship.

With guidance and support, Black voices can rise up. Both Holliday, a middle child of seven with four sisters plus a mom always telling her to "go for it" and Wright, mentored by savvy businesswoman Cici Gunn, understand that being part of Target's Black History Month gives them the opportunity to uplift other Black women.

This shouldn’t be how we say hello...or goodbye.

It’s our reality right now. But it won’t be if we do what it takes to beat COVID-19. Vaccines are coming, but until enough of us are vaccinated, we all still need to wear our masks, stay at least six feet from others, and avoid indoor social gatherings. The more we slow the spread, the faster we’ll return to normal hellos … and fewer goodbyes.
