ART SCENE Marvel: Universe Of Super Heroes Opens April 13 At The Franklin Institute Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes, an immersive exhibition featuring more than 300 original artifacts, including some of Marvel's most iconic costumes, props, and original art opens at The Franklin Institute on April 13, 2019—tickets are now on sale.

The exhibit debuts in Philadelphia as the East Coast premiere during Marvel's 80th anniversary year, and immediately follows the world premiere at MoPOP in Seattle, which drew more than 300,000 visitors. The Philadelphia stop brings a thoroughly reimagined layout, ambitious new installations, and never-before-seen content.

The 15,000 square-foot exhibit traces the story of Marvel and its influence on visual culture, while also uncovering the narratives of individual characters such as Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange. It gives insight on how Marvel has influenced and drawn inspiration from the ever-changing tides of popular culture, tracing how their stories have responded to historical events and addressed broader issues such as gender, race, and mental illness.

The exhibit also pays tribute to pioneering creators such as Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko whose collective imagination made Marvel into the endlessly expansive fictional universe known today.

"Marvel transformed the idea of the Super Hero in the 1960s— and beyond—by ratcheting up the visual spectacle, emotional dynamism and philosophical sophistication of the action-adventure comics genre," says Brian Crosby, creative director of Marvel Themed Entertainment. "Marvel has always been a reflection of the world outside your window, and one of its most compelling messages has always been, that anyone—regardless of race, religion or gender—can be a Super Hero."

TRAVEL USC Norman Lear Center Unveils Major Initiative to Change the Way Americans See Africa A seminal report released recently by the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center's Media Impact Project reveals that Americans seldom see mentions of Africa or Africans on popular television shows or in the news; and when they do, the portrayals are often negative and stereotyped.

The Africa Narrative is a global initiative harnessing the power of the arts, media and entertainment, business, education and philanthropy to engage the world in new stories of modern Africa. The initiative is based at the Lear Center's Media Impact Project at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, in partnership with CrissCrossGlobal, an international communications consultancy. The initiative will broaden awareness of the region and its 54 nations through research, communications campaigns and collaborations with partners from Africa, the US and around the world. Africa in the Media is the inaugural research project, with an initial focus on measuring US media depictions of the continent and their impact on US attitudes and engagement with the region.

Although a 2015 global Pew survey revealed that Africans were among the world's most optimistic about their economic prospects, Africans and experts of the region argue that Western news and entertainment media still focus predominantly on disease, poverty, corruption, famine, armed conflict and stories about Westerners who appear as saviors.

This despite the fact that African innovation, entrepreneurialism, music, fashion, art and a new generation of creators, innovators and

Content was analyzed for a range of factors designed to reveal not just the number of Africa mentions but also their content and tone.

Partners from BrandsEye, a global opinion mining company, analyzed the tweets for their sentiment. Results confirm the argument that Africa is mostly ignored and widely stereotyped in the media when it does appear.

Recognizing that media can greatly influence the way people form opinions, The Africa Narrative seeks more balance, diversity and nuance in Africa storytelling that does justice to realities of the continent and its 54 countries.

As a first step toward that goal, Africa in the Media aims to understand African depictions and ultimately their impact on African tourism, trade and investment.

Researchers at the Lear Center's Media Impact Project conducted a content analysis of some 700,000 hours of television news and entertainment and 1.6 million Twitter posts over the month of March 2018. These were monitored for mentions of Africa, African, or

KEY FINDINGS Africa and Africans barely register on US television l Stories about Africa appeared infrequently on US television: a mention appeared once in every five hours of TV programming. Viewers were seven times more likely to see references to Europe. l Out of almost 700,000 hours of programming, there were only 25 major scripted storylines about Africa. l Only 13% of entertainment storylines that mentioned Africa included an African character, and 80% of the roles were minor. When African characters did appear, 46% spoke 10 words or less. l Only 31% of African characters were women. l 20% of all unscripted entertainment mentions of Africa were on the game show Jeopardy.

Depictions of Africa are broadly negative l Overall, viewers were more than twice as likely to see negative depictions of Africa than positive ones in major storylines about Africa. l Most mentions of Africa (43%) appeared on national or local news. After politics (32%),

crime garnered the most mentions (16%) while the topic of business and the economy accounted for just 8% of news coverage. l Over one-third (35%) of African mentions in TV shows were about crime. Many were told on America's most popular shows such as Law & Order: SVU and the NCIS franchises. l Of the 25 major scripted storylines about Africa that appeared on television during March, 14 centered on crime. l Of the 5 topics tracked on twitter (animals, corruption, crime/terrorism, Diaspora and Poverty), crime/terrorism had the most mentions (8%) with South Africa and Nigeria the countries most associated with the topic.

Africa as a Country l 44% of TV shows and movies only mention "Africa," with no reference to a particular country. l On Twitter, "Africa" by far received the most mentions (27%) — more than any individual country.

Out of a continent of 54 countries, five nations grab the bulk of attention: l Five countries — Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Seychelles and Congo — accounted for almost half (49%) of all mentions of any African nation, although there is variation by type of content.

Two years later, she has succeeded in maintaining the quality of life for her residents with a thriving community center, redeveloped business corridors, a variety of safe and affordable housing options, and has big plans to keep growing.

“The vision that I talked about when I initially came into office, was the vision that we love this town and we love our accomplishments but we also know that there is so much more we can do with this and I want to continue that. love living here in the Village of Matteson,” said Chalmers-Currin.

The Village of Matteson currently has about 20,000 residents with an average household income of just under $82,000. Mayor Chalmers-Currin sees the community as a gateway to the south suburbs of Chicago because it is perfectly situated between Lincoln Highway, Cicero Ave., and Interstate 57. All of these culminating attributes have helped the Mayor to attract new businesses and encourage surrounding communities to support her efforts.

“When people talk about coming in and

building their business here, they know that they can get right on I-57 and that we have Cicero Ave. right here and that Lincoln Highway will take them straight across to Indiana. I really think we are at the center of everything and when I talk to other communities, they say, ‘where goes the Village of Matteson, where goes the south region’ and that’s how important we are,” said Chalmers-Currin.

Just as important as economic development, if not more important, is active community engagement which can be found every day of the week at the Matteson Community Center where residents of all ages can participate in dozens of programs, take fitness classes, have birthday parties, or simply just socialize on a Monday morning. The Mayor said that it is important to her that everything she does revolves around family and community, and that is more than evident at the community center.

“This work is so important and we all play a part in it,” said Chalmers-Currin. "Some people only see the big picture but there are a lot of those little integral parts of it that make us a family and we are truly a village that cares about everyone.”

Solar Jobs Down 3 Percent Nationwide in 2018, But Some Key States See Job Growth The U.S. solar industry employs 242,343 workers as of 2018, a decline of nearly 8,000 jobs (3.2 percent) compared to 2017, according to the National Solar Jobs Census 2018 released recently by The Solar Foundation.

This marks the second year in a row that solar jobs have declined after seven years of steady growth. At the same time, solar jobs increased in 29 states in 2018, including in many states with emerging solar markets.

States with the highest employment gains include Florida, Illinois, Texas, and New York State. Other states that saw job growth include Ohio, Washington State, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Virginia, and Tennessee.

The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit educational and research organization, issues the National Solar Jobs Census each year to provide comprehensive and reliable data on the U.S. solar workforce.

Overall, solar employment has grown 159 percent since the first Census was released in 2010, adding nearly 150,000 well-paying jobs across all 50 states.

The 2018 National Solar Jobs Census for the first time includes jobs numbers for Puerto Rico, which has 1,997 solar workers as of 2018.

With Puerto Rico jobs included, the total number of U.S. solar jobs comes to 244,340.

“Despite two challenging years, the long-term outlook for this industry remains positive as even more Americans turn to low-cost solar energy and storage solutions to power their homes and businesses,” said Andrea Luecke, President and Executive Director at The Solar Foundation. “However, it will take exceptional leadership at the federal, state, and local levels to spur this growth and address the urgent challenge of climate change. Expanding solar energy and storage across America will create high-quality jobs, reduce carbon emissions, boost local economies, and build

resilient and adaptive communities.”

Nationwide, the jobs decline in 2018 reflects a slowdown in installed solar capacity. Solar companies delayed many utility-scale projects in late 2017 while awaiting the outcome of a petition for new tariffs on solar panels and cells.

These delays led to reduced capacity growth and fewer jobs in the first three quarters of 2018.

At the state level, policy challenges and a difficult business climate contributed to lower jobs numbers in some states with established solar markets. In other states, supportive policies and the rapidly declining cost of solar technologies helped drive an increase in employment in 2018.

“We are proud of the solar job growth in Wisconsin. It solidifies our commitment to getting our state on track for a future driven by renewable energy that will make Wisconsin a stronger, better place to live, work, and play," said Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. “We look forward to continuing our promise to build a clean economy that incen-

tivizes energy innovation, diversifies Wisconsin jobs and energy sources, and promotes efficiency, affordability, and accessibility in clean energy production.”

“I’m proud that Minnesota continues to be a clean energy leader in the Midwest,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “While our solar workforce continued to grow last year, we need to do even more to develop and deploy renewable energy and continue to build a strong clean energy economy in Minnesota.”

This year’s National Solar Jobs Census is based on a rigorous survey of solar establishments conducted between September and October 2018. The survey included approximately 59,300 phone calls and over 49,000 emails. The survey was administered to 13,945 separate establishments, of which 2,697 provided full or substantially completed surveys.

Sex robots are here, but laws aren’t keeping up with the ethical and privacy issues they raise

definition to sex robots is that the latter increasingly provide much more than sex. Sex robots are not just dolls with a microchip. They will use self-learning algorithms to engage their partner’s emotions.

Consider the “Mark 1” robot, which resembles the actor Scarlett Johansson. It is regularly labeled a sex robot, yet when I interviewed its creator, Ricky Ma Tsz Hang, he was quick to clarify that Mark 1 is not intended to be a sex robot. Rather, such robots will aim to assist with all sorts of tasks, from preparing a child’s lunch to keeping an elderly relative company.

Humans, of course, can navigate both sexual and nonsexual contexts adeptly. What if a robot can do the same? How do we conceptualize and govern a robot that can switch from “play with kids” mode during the day to “play with adults” mode at night?

has been upheld, but I suspect that all sex toy bans will eventually be struck down. If so, it seems unlikely that states will be able to wholesale restrict sales of sex robots generally.

Bans on childlike sex robots, however, may be different.

It is not clear whether anyone in the U.S. already owns a childlike sex robot. But even the possibility of child sex robots prompted a bipartisan House bill, the Curbing Realistic Exploitative Electronic Pedophilic Robots Act, or CREEPER. Introduced in 2017, it passed unanimously six months later.

State politicians will surely follow suit, and we are likely to see many attempts to ban childlike sex robots. But it’s unclear if such bans will survive constitutional challenge.

On one hand, the Supreme Court has held that prohibitions on child pornography do not violate the First Amendment because the state has a compelling interest in curtailing the effects of child pornography on the children portrayed. Yet the Supreme Court has also held that the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 was overly broad in its attempt to prohibit “child pornography that does not depict an actual child.”

Childlike sex robots are robots, not humans. Like virtual child pornography, the development of a childlike sex robot does not require interaction with any children. Yet it might also be argued that childlike sex robots would have serious detrimental effects that compel state action.

Thorny legal issues In a landmark 2003 case, Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court struck down Texas’ sodomy law and established what some scholars have described as a right to sexual privacy.

There is currently a split among circuit courts in how Lawrence should be applied to state restrictions on the sale of sex toys. So far, Alabama’s ban

The robots are here. Are the “sexbots” close behind?

From the Drudge Report to The New York Times, sex robots are rapidly becoming a part of the national conversation about the future of sex and relationships. Behind the headlines, a number of companies are currently developing robots designed to provide humans with companionship and sexual pleasure – with a few already on the market.

Unlike sex toys and dolls, which are typically sold in off-the-radar shops and hidden in closets, sexbots may become mainstream. A 2017 survey suggested almost half of Americans think that having sex with robots will become a common practice within 50 years.

As a scholar of artificial intelligence, neuroscience and the law, I’m interested in the legal and policy questions that sex robots pose. How do we ensure they are safe? How will intimacy with a sex robot affect the human brain? Would sex with a childlike robot be ethical? And what exactly is a sexbot anyway?

Defining ‘sex robot’ There is no universally accepted definition of “sex robot.” This may not seem important, but it’s actually a serious problem for any proposal to govern – or ban – them.

The primary conundrum is how to distinguish between a sex robot and a “sexy robot.” Just because a robot is attractive to a human and can provide sexual gratification, does it deserve the label “sex robot”?

It’s tempting to define them as legislatures do sex toys, by focusing on their primary use. In Alabama, the only state that still has an outright ban on the sale of sex toys, the government targets devices “primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs.”

for concern given the multitude of ways in which sex robots could be harmful to their users.

For example, dangers lurk even in a seemingly innocent scene where a sex robot and human hold hands and kiss. What if the sexbots’ lips were manufactured with lead paint or some other toxin? And what if the robot, with the strength of five humans, accidentally crushes the human’s finger in a display of passion?

It’s not just physical harm, but security as well. For instance, just as a human partner learns by remembering what words were soothing, and what type of touch was comforting, so too is a sex robot likely to store and process massive amounts of intimate information. What regulations are in place to ensure that this data remains private? How vulnerable will the sex robot be to hacking? Could the state use sex robots as surveillance devices for sex offenders?

Sexbots in the city Whether and how governments regulate sex robots will depend on what we learn – or what we assume – about the effects of sexbots on individuals and society.

In 2018, the Houston City Council made headlines by enacting an ordinance to ban the operation of what would have been America’s first so-called robot “brothel.” At one of the community meetings, an attendee warned: “A business like this would destroy homes, families, finances of our neighbors and cause major community uproars in the city.”

But dire predictions like this are pure speculation. At present there is no evidence of how the introduction of sex robots would affect either individuals or society.

For instance, would a man who uses a childlike sex robot be more or less likely to harm an actual human child? Would robots be a substitute for humans in relationships or would

they enhance relationships as sex toys might? Would sex robots fill a void for those who are lonely and without companions? Just as pilots use virtual flight simulators before they fly a real plane, could virgins use sex robots to safely practice sex before trying the real thing?

Put another way, there are far more unanswered questions about sex robots than there are actual sex robots. Although it’s hard to conduct empirical studies until sexbots are more prevalent, informed governance requires researchers to explore these topics urgently. Otherwise, we may see reactionary governance decisions based on supposition and fear of doomsday scenarios.

A brave new world A fascinating question for me is how the current taboo on sex robots will ebb and flow over time.

There was a time, not so long ago, when humans attracted to the same sex felt embarrassed to make this public. Today, society is similarly ambivalent about the ethics of “digisexuality” – a phrase used to describe a number of human-technology intimate relationships. Will there be a time, not so far in the future, when humans attracted to robots will gladly announce their relationship with a machine?

No one knows the answer to this question. But I do know that sex robots are likely to be in the American market soon, and it is important to prepare for that reality. Imagining the laws governing sexbots is no longer a law professor hypothetical or science fiction.

It’s a real-world challenge that society is about to face for the first time. I hope that the law gets it right.

Landmarks Illinois Seeks Qualified Owner, Steward of Iconic former Johnson Publishing Company Test Kitchen Chicago – Landmarks Illinois,

a statewide historic preservation nonprofit, is seeking a new owner for the one-of-a-kind former Johnson Publishing Company Test Kitchen, designed in 1971 by Palm Springs-based interior designers William Raiser and Arthur Elrod.

Landmarks Illinois (LI) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) from qualified institutions, organizations, corporations or other entities interested in accepting ownership of the former test kitchen and reassembling it for educational display or use.

The iconic test kitchen, featuring bold colors, patterns and appliances, was previously housed on the fourth floor of the Johnson Publishing Company Building at 820 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago and was where Ebony Editor Charlotte L. Lyons would experiment with new recipes before putting them in the magazine’s monthly feature, “A Date with a Dish.” The former test kitchen strongly reflects the mod interior design styles and bright colors of the 1970s. It also corresponded with Raiser and Elrod’s interiors throughout the former Johnson Publishing Company building, designed by local African American architect John Warren Moutoussamy.

An ideal future owner of the test kitchen has appreciation for its unique design and wants to honor the history and significance of not only the space but of the Johnson Publishing Company, which became one of the most important African American-owned companies in the nation,” said Bonnie McDonald, president & chief executive officer of Landmarks Illinois.

Landmarks Illinois acquired the test kitchen in April 2018 for $1 and, with the help of professional volunteers among its membership and from the Skyline Council of Landmarks Illinois, documented, carefully disassembled and removed the kitchen from the Johnson Publishing Company Building.

Landmarks Illinois took ownership of the test kitchen after a developer purchased the Johnson Publishing Company building with plans to convert it into residential space.

Due to the cultural and historic significance of the test kitchen, which was largely intact at the time of its disassembly and removal from the building, Landmarks Illinois wanted to see it preserved and celebrated.

Landmarks Illinois is now asking for proposals from qualified institutions to acquire, move the test kitchen out of storage and reassemble it in a manner and location that will publicly tell the story of Johnson Publishing Company, which was founded by John H. Johnson in 1942 and is best known for publishing Ebony and Jet magazines.

Those submitting a response to the RFP must demonstrate why they are the best steward for the test kitchen and how they will display or use the kitchen to share the story and history of the space in an inspiring way.

Proposals are due Wednesday, May 1, 2019, by 5 p.m. Central time.

The non-residential segment includes 46,000 jobs (30 percent), including about 12,500 jobs in community solar. The utility-scale market comprises 22,000 jobs (14 percent). l Solar workforce demographics saw little change from the previous year. In 2018, women made up 26 percent of the workforce; Latino or Hispanic workers made up 17 percent; black or African American workers made up 8 percent; and Asian workers made up 9 percent.

l In 2018, 26 percent of solar establishments reported it was “very difficult” to find qualified candidates to fill open positions, a substantial increase from the 18 percent reporting such challenges in 2017. l With a backlog of utility-scale projects and new policy incentives in key states, the outlook for solar jobs is expected to improve in 2019.

Survey respondents predict that solar jobs will increase 7 percent in 2019, bringing the total to 259,400 jobs.

“As one of the largest utility and commercial solar contractors in the U.S., we were impacted by several factors that caused market

instability in 2018,” said George Hershman, president of Swinerton Renewable Energy. “Tariffs on solar cells and modules, steel, and aluminum increased costs and impacted projects that were already in the pipeline.
