WADE TO GET STREET NAMED IN HER HONOR Chicago- On Saturday, March 4, at 11:00 am, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Congressman Bobby Rush, Aldermen, and a host of business, community leaders and the family of Josephine Wade will participate in the designation of “Mother Josephine Wade Way “ on the corner of 79th & Vernon. For over fifty years, Josephine Wade has been a restaurateur, mortgage broker, civic leader and mother to all throughout the city of Chicago.

The community leaders in the Chatham, Chesterfield and Park Manor communities lobbied city officials for the designation. “Mrs. Wade has been an icon “woman/business

activist” in the Park Manor community for more than a decade. Her community participation and involvement with Park Manor Neighbors has been phenomenal throughout the years and will continue into the future”, said Darlene Tribue, President, Park Manor Neighbors Community Council. Wade, who sits on a variety of corporate, community and faith-based Board of Directors, is also an active member of Tried Stone Baptist Church.

The webinar featured a distinguished panel of accomplished social media professionals, marketers and digital influencers who shared their insights and tips on social media trends business owners should watch for in 2017.

Henry, a 16-year web-designer discussed and explained four core areas in social media that entrepreneurs should be aware of which includes video marketing, storytelling, social shopping and social content.

“Across all social platforms even on twitter, more and more videos are becoming popular,” Henry said. “Live streaming is very popular. [But] some people aren’t ready to be live, but you can do video conferencing or you can do face-time from your phone.”

Henry said everyone should use social tools or apps that work well for their brand and client.

“Think about the style of video and the platform that works best for you,” Henry said.

“Think about the right tools. A tripod [with a camera] is very essential and a mobile mount or Bluetooth remote. And no more “inbox me…” everyone should have an online store so your clients can buy your products.”

Edmond Jr., said the main goal anyone should have while using social media in any form is to “Don’t Play Yourself”.

“There are more tools than ever and power than ever, but it’s very mindful on how you represent yourself and with everything that is going on, you can get lost in that,” said Edmond Jr. You have to be real, transparent and authentic and figure out how you can cut through the clutter of social media, he said. Live-stream video feeds on social networks will continue to grow in importance and influence the world, he added.

“If you’re some place I can’t get to, I will watch the [live video],” Edmond Jr. said. “Sixty seconds with the right person will make you watch.”

Southerland pointed out that in order for small businesses to grow and expand they should only share content to other social media influencers who care about the things they care about and vice versa.

“For nonprofits that have a small staff, sometimes planning content long-term can be tedious,” Southerland said. “So, using free scheduling on Twitter or Instagram will be helpful to making sure your content goes out at an ideal time of the day so you’re getting noticed,” Southerland said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As deadly gun violence continues to claim lives in Chicago and wreak havoc on communities engulfed in poverty, drugs, high unemployment and a lack of access to mental health and social services, U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (IL-01) has reintroduced H.R.810 the “Hadiya Pendleton and Nyasia PryearYard Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act of 2017.”

The bill seeks to increase public safety by punishing and deterring firearms trafficking.

Specifically, it prohibits, with respect to two or more firearms, the transfer to or receipt by a prohibited person or a person who plans a subsequent transfer that results in unlawful use, possession, or disposition of such firearms; providing false statements in connection with the purchase, receipt, or acquisition of such firearms; and directing, promoting, or facilitating such prohibited conduct.

A person who commits or conspires to commit a gun trafficking offense is subject to a prison term of up to 20 years (or 25 years if such person also acted as an organizer). The U.S. Sentencing Commission must review and, if appropriate, amend the sentencing guidelines and policy statements that apply to

persons convicted of trafficking in firearms, according to a press release.

Named for two teenagers who were shot and killed in random acts of gun fire in their hometowns, the law could go a long way to reducing the flow of illegal guns in cities across the country that have been dealing with a spike in shootings and gun deaths. In 2013 Pendelton was a 15-year-old Chicago honor student who had just returned from performing at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremonies when she was shot and killed while walking home from school. Pryear was a 17-year old New York honor student when she was struck and killed while dancing at a party with friends in 2009. Their deaths rocked the nation and led to heightened gun control advocacy.

“In addition to taking on these straw purchases we need to also take a look at the other side of violence,” Rush said. “There are clear economic and social factors that contribute to the climate in cities like Chicago where people choose violence over conflict resolution.

Innovative Cancer Imager Earns Illinois Tech Professor Prestigious NSF CAREER Award Chicago – Illinois Tech Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Kenneth Tichauer has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER Award in the amount of $568,245 to perfect a medical imager that could lead to earlier detection/diagnosis and targeted drug development for cancer patients.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. Tichauer’s project, “Development of Enhanced Early Photon Tomography for Cancer Staging,” involves the ADEPT Cancer Imager, which will enable more accurate measures of the molecular environment of an individual’s cancer. Treatment strategies can then be tailored on a personalized level—a process known as personalized medicine.

Tichauer and his ADEPT team are also the finalists of Illinois Tech’s Nayar Prize I, a $1 million prize package funded by the family foundation of an Illinois Tech alumnus.

The team has built an imager prototype and has applied for a patent. Members are now collaborating with two cancer experts from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University on how to best bridge the gap between testing the ADEPT system and using it in hospitals.

The NSF CAREER Award is one of the agency’s top honors given to junior faculty members. The award program supports faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

BLACKS RETURN TO THE LABOR MARKET AND FIND JOBS, BLS REPORT SAYS

The Black unemployment rate continued to improve falling from 7.8 percent in December to 7.7 percent in January, according to the latest jobs report from the Labor Department.

The labor force participation rate for Blacks, which is the share of workers who are employed or looking for jobs, increased from 61.8 percent in December to 62.4 percent in January. The employmentpopulation ratio (E-POP), the share of people who hold jobs compared to the total population, edged up from 57 percent in December to 57.5 percent last month. Compared to December, more Blacks entered the job market and found work in

January.

The economy added 227,000 jobs in January. Retail trade, construction, and financial activities saw the greatest gains in jobs, the report said.

Even though much of the data was collected before President Donald Trump took office, Trump Administration officials were quick to take credit for the solid jobs report.

Economist Kate Bahn of the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, said that the most recent jobs report was, “the final release of data that reflects how the labor market fared under President Barack Obama, with 227,000 jobs added—near the average for the past two years.”

eing glamorous and leading a ‘real’ life might seem like contradictory concepts, but it’s all a day in the life for actress Holly Robinson Peete. The multitalented actress, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist is currently shooting the second season of her family docu-series “For Peete’s Sake”with her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, their four children and her mother, Dolores. The show gives a positive spin to reality TV by sharing their lives, everyday challenges and their journey with son RJ, who has autism.

Being a mom, career woman and shooting a docu-series can be demanding, but Robinson Peete juggles her multi-faceted life in style. The actress recently launched a namesake clothing line, HRP by Holly Robinson Peete, exclusively available at EVINE Live. While Robinson Peete has a wonderful family and many achievements, her life has

not been without challenges. When her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, her world changed. “My dad [has] been gone for 14 years now, but his struggle with Parkinson’s led us to a life of service,” said Robinson Peete. Inspired to help those affected by Parkinson’s, she and Rodney founded the HollyRod Foundation in 1997. After their son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism they expanded the mission of HollyRod to also provide support and resources to families affected by autism. To help raise funds for the foundation, every year they hold events such as DesignCare - and fashion and entertainment are very much on the agenda.

While fashion is a highlight of DesignCare, HollyRod, most importantly, has been able to help many people thanks to the support of dedicated friends and sponsors. “We’re really blessed to have great partners,” said Robinson Peete. “One in 68 kids are affected by autism spectrum disorder. It’s on the rise and what happens is a lot of these children have no access to therapy services or any compassionate care and the same with Parkinson’s,” she said.

also happens to have been the position Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush both took in the 1980 Republican presidential primary debates) I usually prefer to stick to the moral argument.

That argument, put simply, is that where peaceful people move to, settle or work is nobody’s business but theirs.

But there are practical arguments against America’s increasingly draconian immigration laws too. Enforcement is expensive but, fortunately, almost certain to be ineffectual (if it worked, severe economic downturn would be the result).

The most important of the practical arguments, in my opinion, is that a police state built to persecute immigrants will necessarily persecute everyone else as well.

I’ve spoken with friends who traveled in the old Soviet Union and eastern Europe before the Berlin Wall came down. They see near-complete similarity between those regimes and the operations of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol forces.

The difference between pre-reunification East Germany and the 100-mile wide “constitution-free zone” along the US-Mexico border is the flag the agencies in question salute.

Recent administrations have worked to expand that zone to cover the entire country and the Trump administration seems bent on finishing the job.

The near-total police state blossoming before our eyes is the inevitable result of America’s 70year romance with the astoundingly stupid idea that it’s the government’s business to monitor and control who travels, lives and works where.

America had legally open borders for its first century as a nation, and nearly so for half a century after that. It wasn’t until after World War Two that one even needed a passport to enter or leave the United States.

Open borders worked. Freedom worked.

The subsequent seven decades of attempts at rigorous immigration control have irrefutably established that our choice is not between open borders and closed borders, but between immigration freedom or totalitarian government. And Americans’ time to stop the stampede toward the latter is running short.

Self­executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: By this Copyright Notice, both Juristic Person and the agent of said Juristic Person, hereafter jointly and severally "User," consent and agree that any use of "EUGENE CLARKE JR©", other than author­ ized use as set forth above; constitutes unau­ thorized use of Secured Party's copyrighted property and contractually binds User. This Notice by Declaration becomes a Security Agreement wherein User is a debtor and "Upper and Lower Case Name Here' is Secured Party, signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's proper­ ty in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each trade name/trademark use, per each occurrence of use (violation/infringement), plus triple damages, plus cost for each such use, as well as for each and every use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, "EUGENE CLARKE JR©,"; (2) authenticates This Security Agreement where­ in User is debtor and Eugene Clarke Jr. is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's property, i.e. all consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, invest­ ment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter­of­credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, doc­ uments and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User contractual obliga­ tion in favor of Secured Party for User's unau­ thorized use of Secured Party's copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement wherein User is debtor and Eugene Clarke Jr. is Secured Party; ( 4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)" is a continuing financ­ ing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property pledged as collateral in Security Agreement described above in paragraph "(2)" until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) authorized Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraph "(3)," as well as in paragraph " ( 4 )," and the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2)," in the UCC filing office; (6) consents and agree that any and all such fil­ ings described in paragraph "( 4)," and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User; effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "payment Terms" and "default Terms,' with full authorization and power granted Secured Party for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentica­ tion of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest.
