BASIC ACTIONS CAN STOP LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING, HELP BYSTANDERS SAVE LIVES WASHINGTON, DC — Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable trauma-related death in the United States.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently partnered with local emergency care experts for Stop the Bleed Day which was held on on March 31, 2018.

The campaign’s goal was to equip the general public with the tools and knowledge to become immediate responders and help stop life-threatening bleeding.

After ensuring their own safety, anyone can start the “ABCs of Bleeding Injuries,” according to an ACEP press release which include: (A)lert. Get help by calling 911 yourself or telling somebody to call 911.

(B)leeding. Find the bleeding injury. Open or remove clothing over the wound to see it clearly. Look for and identify “life-threatening” bleeding.

(C)ompress. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding by: 1. Covering the wound with a clean cloth and applying pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands, OR; 2. Using a tourniquet, OR; 3. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS ILLINOIS CHAPTER ENDORSES JB PRITZKER FOR GOVERNOR CHICAGO – The Illinois chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recently endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. NASW-IL advocates for over 20,000 licensed social workers in the state of Illinois, 6,000 of which are active members. The endorsement comes after JB Pritzker secured the Democratic nomination for governor.

“It is time to think big, it is time for a new direction. Our best chance for a new Illinois is under the leadership of JB Pritzker,” said NASW-IL spokesman Kyle Hillman.

Eighth Ward Alderman Pushes For New Senior Residences Continued from page 1

lderman of Chicago’s eighth ward, Michelle Harris, has proposed construction on Montclare Senior Residences of Calumet Heights, a senior residence home set to be built at the corner of 94th Street and Stony Island Avenue. The $38 million project will build a seven-story building on three out of the five acres of vacant land that currently occupy that corner. The other two acres are being looked at for restaurant and retail space.

For two years, Harris has been working on securing funding for this project that will provide 101 one-bedroom and 34 twobedroom units to people who are at least 62-years-old, according to a press release from the office of Alderman Harris.

“Senior housing is a need, the eighth ward is an aging community. I represent people who are retiring every day and I’m getting calls from all over the ward of people wanting to be put on the waiting list for a two-bedroom unit in the new building,” said Harris.

The project is subsidized by CHA but is not a CHA housing complex. This means that some of the units will be available with the Property Rental Assistance (PRA) program. Households that benefit from PRA meet a low-income requirement and pay 30 percent of their income towards rental expenses. Of the 134 units in the proposed development, 30 are set to get PRA, according to the press release and Alderman Harris.

“This is a senior building and the PRA is a way to help seniors with very low income to have a great place to live and be in a wonderful environment,” said Harris.

There has been a slight pushback from what

Harris says is a small group of people in the eight ward. This group is against the housing project and even went as far as to create an online petition titled ‘Don’t Build A 7-Story Low-Income Complex Next to Our SingleFamily Homes!!’ The petition states six reasons why construction should not begin on this project. The reasons address concerns about traffic, safety, noise, property values, a lack of transparency and community input, the character of the community, and economic development.

“The people that are pushing back are doing it, not because it isn’t a great project because it’s a fabulous project, they are pushing back simply because they do not support me. It’s political,” said Harris. “Across the ward, this project has a fabulous amount of support.

I’m getting great response and feedback from everybody except for the small group of people who don’t support me politically.”

Along with the Montclare Senior Residences, Huddle House is preparing to build a new restaurant on the vacant land. Huddle House is a popular southern-style diner known for serving ‘round-the-clock’ breakfast, according to their website. Harris said she thinks Huddle House will be up and running before the senior residences are complete.

New Solar Jobs Map Shows Employment Trends in States, Local Areas Nationwide T he Solar Foundation recently released an updated map on the number of solar jobs in every state, metropolitan area, county, and congressional district, revealing the geographic distribution of America’s 250,271 solar jobs.

The interactive map can be viewed at SolarStates.org.

The updated map provides complete data on solar jobs in all 50 states, along with details on jobs by solar employment sector; solar workforce demographics; solar industry background; and much more.

Users can toggle between 2015, 2016, and 2017 data to see the number of solar jobs year over year.

The new solar jobs map is a follow up to the National Solar Jobs Census 2017, the eighth annual report on America’s solar workforce issued by The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit educational and research organization. Along with the map, The Solar Foundation released 52 fact sheets on the solar workforce in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

The National Solar Jobs Census 2017 found that nationwide, solar employment declined 3.8 percent, from 260,077 jobs in 2016 to 250,271 in 2017. At the same time,

solar jobs increased in 29 states and the District of Columbia, as well as in major metropolitan areas throughout the nation. This

growth took place in many states with emerging solar markets, such as Minnesota, Utah, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, www.thechicagocitizen.com

and others.

“Our solar jobs map shows that many states and cities bucked the national trend and enjoyed significant jobs growth in 2017,” said Andrea Luecke, President and Executive Director of The Solar Foundation. “As solar technologies rapidly become more affordable and abundant, solar jobs nationwide have nearly tripled since 2010. These jobs are in solar installation, project development, sales and marketing, manufacturing, engineering, and many other skill areas. In the future, states and localities should look to solar as a key strategy for building local economies and supporting high-quality careers.”

California remained the state with the leading number of solar jobs in 2017 (86,414), though jobs in the state declined 14 percent from 2016.

Among states that saw solar job growth, the state that added the most jobs in 2017 was Utah, followed by Minnesota, Arizona, New Jersey, and New York.

Metropolitan areas and counties in diverse parts of the country saw significant job growth in 2017.

The metro area with the highest total number of solar jobs was San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California, at 24,474 jobs, though

employment declined 6 percent from 2016. Some of the metro areas where jobs grew significantly in 2017 include greater Provo-Orem, Utah (3,798 total jobs), New YorkNorth New Jersey-Long Island, New York (12,038 jobs); Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn. (3,803 jobs); Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Ariz. (7,204 jobs); and PhiladelphiaCamden-Wilmington (2,319 jobs).

Other metropolitan areas that saw job growth in 2017 include greater Denver, Colorado; Miami, Florida; Orlando, Florida; Tampa, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; Kansas City, Missouri; Charleston, South Carolina; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; St. Louis, Missouri; and Detroit, Michigan, among others.

Data for the National Solar Jobs Census is based on a rigorous survey of solar establishments conducted between October and November 2017. The Census defines a solar employee as someone who spends at least 50 percent of his or her time on solar-related work.

IU Writers’ Conference brings award-winning authors, poets to Bloomington campus

W

riters from across the county will travel to Indiana University Bloomington this summer to participate in the 78th annual IU Writers’ Conference. The conference, which is open to writers at any level -- from the hobbyist to the professional -- will feature a number of diverse and award-winning authors, poets and essayists.

“Since 1940, this conference has brought together some of the nation’s most prominent and up-and-coming writers to share their knowledge and craft with other writers,” said Bob Bledsoe, director of the conference.

“Being able to learn first-hand from writers at this level through workshops and classes is something our attendees have the unique opportunity to do throughout the conference.”

The conference will offer workshops in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, and classes in fiction,

cartooning, crime fiction and poetry.

In addition, participants can take part in a reading series and faculty panel discussions.

Headlining the conference will be authors Ada Limón, Matthew Klam and IU alumnus Kiese Laymon, who will each host a workshop focused on their writing style.

“Intensive writing workshops are the most inspiring and effective creative experiences I’ve ever been part of,” Klam said. “There’s something profound that happens in a concentrated period of days that’s entirely different from, say, a class that meets once or twice a week.

“I led a workshop at the Indiana University Writers’ Conference a few years ago, and the people who showed up there, the students and faculty, were on a really high level.

Indiana is a perfect example of this kind of experience, where you have breakthroughs and epiphanies, and

lead a workshop on fiction. Limón, author of five books of poetry, will lead conference attendees through a workshop on poetry.

Laymon, who earned an MFA in fiction from IU, is now a professor of English and African-American studies at the University of Mississippi, and a distinguished visiting professor of nonfiction at the University of Iowa.

Chicago Public Library To Commemorate The Life Of Mayor Harold Washington

hicago Public Library will host a program to discuss the new documentary film Or titled Punch 9--Harold Washington an ge Li nefor Chicago at Harold Washington st at Library. The program will take place at 6 pm on Monday, April 16 in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.

A group of middle school students from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s Academic Center have produced a ten-minute History Fair film on Harold Washington.

The program will begin with a showing of their film and a very brief discussion with the students before transitioning into the main program.

The main program includes a showing of the Punch 9 trailer and a Line Orange panel of Punch 9’s production team discussing the process and progress of their documentary project.

“Mayor Harold Washington was a trailblazer and a visionary, and his legacy lives on not only across the Chicago streets, schools, and parks that bear his name, but in the inspiration and idealism he instilled in generations of Chicagoans,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “I want to

thank both these young students and the adults for producing these great documentaries, and recognizing a leader who proudly fought for justice, equity and a brighter future for every resident in every community in Chicago.”

Harold Washington made history in 1983 when he was elected as the first African American Mayor in Chicago. He challenged the status quo in City Hall, which many didn’t agree with. He faced many challengers along the way, but his strong resilience and optimism eventually led him to the role of Mayor. The documentary will showcase various aspects of Washington’s political journey including the battles he had to fight and his lasting influence.

Over the past few weeks, activists, elected officials, students, workers and other leaders in the “I AM 2018” campaign have been organizing and building support for their work

this year and beyond. On February 1, more than 70 cities observed a coordinated Moment of Silence to honor Memphis sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker who were crushed to death in 1968 and sparked the strike of 1,300 fellow workers that brought Dr. King to Memphis.

On February 24, two days before the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a case that could threaten workers’ rights, thousands of working people, civil rights, labor leaders and families flooded the streets of every major city to demand freedom from want and hate and call for the U.S. to unrig its broken political and economic systems. Since then, college students and other young filmmakers have been submitting videos that connect Dr. King’s fight for justice to today’s movements for social change. The winning submissions, judged by Hans Charles, Dorian Parks, co-founder of Geeks of Color, and award-winning filmmakers Madeleine Hunt Erlich and Shahin Izadi were screened at Mason Temple on April 3rd.

America Is Seeing A Flood Of ‘Flood Cars’ (NAPSI)—Recent research suggests drivers may be behind the wheel of more than 325,000 previously flooded vehicles.

That’s a 20 percent increase from 2016 and a stark reminder to consumers to do due diligence when used-car shopping.

ONE WOMAN’S STORY “I bought a car last year and the seller never told us anything about it being a flood car,” said Charlene Geiger from Pennsylvania. “When we got home and ran a Carfax, there it was—a flood car from Hurricane Sandy. It showed that the seller bought it as a salvage car and the title was washed when he brought it to Pennsylvania. We lost $16,000 over all of it.”

Historically, about half the vehicles damaged by floods end up back on the market. Flooded cars rot from the inside out as water corrodes the mechanical parts, shorts the electrical system, and compromises safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes.

Health concerns are an added problem, as mold and bacteria permeate the soft parts of the car.
