STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN PRESTIGIOUS DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY AT WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT One hundred teens from across the nation participated in Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence magazine -- a four-day, immersive and transformational mentoring program at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida which concluded this weekend.

The 100 students were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide for this once-in-a-lifetime mentoring program that is designed to assist them in identifying and pursuing their dreams. The students, along with a parent or guardian, received an all-expensepaid trip to Disney to participate in the program, which features a series of career-oriented workshops and leadership seminars. ILLINOIS STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL INVITATIONAL TO TAKE PLACE IN CHAMPAIGN Teams from 41 high schools throughout the state will participate in the 36th annual Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) High School Mock Trial Invitational on March 24 and 25, 2018, at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign. The top eight teams will compete in the final round on March 25, for the state championship. The winner will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Each team tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA Committee.

This year’s case is Grant v Smith, a civil suit alleging the use of excessive force during an arrest. Students will assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses, and a panel of Illinois lawyers and judges, along with members of the ISBA Law Related Education Committee, will evaluate and score the students’ performances. The students must also take a written test about the issues of the case and basic legal principles.

ity Colleges of Chicago and PepsiCo recently announced their new partnership to offer students a pathway to careers as merchandisers, warehouse personnel, commercial truck drivers and machine maintenance technicians and mechanics. PepsiCo committed to providing up to 40 jobs annually to students from OliveHarvey College and Richard J. Daley College Additionally, PepsiCo will offer scholarships to help eliminate the barrier of cost as students pursue a college education. Olive Harvey College and Daley College will include PepsiCo-specific training in their curriculum to prepare students for job interviews and the company screening process at PepsiCo, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago and PepsiCo. “Our focus at City Colleges is transforming our students’ lives through education, connectingthemto four-year universities or immediate employment,and putting them on the path to upward mobility,” said City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor, Juan Salgado. “The PepsiCo partnership perfectlyaligns with ourmission byoffering our students a pathway tofamily-sustaining careers in high-demand fields.”

PepsiCo is one of the nations largest food and beverage companies. They own product brands like Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, and Pepsi-Cola. Their interest in collaborating with City Colleges of Chicago comes from a long-time presence in Chicago operating a manufacturing facility on 51st St. in Bridgeview, having a large distribution center on 35th St., and management offices in West Loop and www.thechicagocitizen.com

PepsiCo wanted to listen to the needs of the community they are occupying and help where they could, according to a representative from PepsiCo. “At the core of who we are is our fundamental belief of ‘Performance with Purpose’ which says that our success is intrinsically tied to our ability to be responsive to the needs of our society. Training Chicago students is simply our commitment to invest in the community where we do business and where our employees live,” said a representative from PepsiCo. After talking with community leaders and learning that there was a challenge with unemployment in the area, PepsiCo turned to City Colleges of Chicago to build a pathway to employment, according to PepsiCo. “Realizing PepsiCo regularly requires the unique skill-set of persons trained in the areas of Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics along with Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance within the Chicagoland area, we turned to the City Colleges of Chicago, specifically Olive-Harvey College and Richard J. Daley College, to create a pathway for students in the these disciplines,” said a representative from PepsiCo. “In fact, we have hired 10 of their students, and because of the positive interaction with them, we explored further with Chancellor Salgado and the interim presidents Felicia Davis & Eduardo Garza on how we could expand our efforts into a formal program.”

The partnership with PepsiCo will provide students from Olive Harvey College and Daley College with a peace of mind knowing a major employer is waiting to hire them after graduation, according to Salgado.

Chicago K - 3 STEM Learning Program Lauded in Study Funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation CHICAGO — A Chicago non-profit is leveling

the playing field for African American and Latino students preparing for slots in the nation’s top university science and engineering programs, according to a case study prepared

by ICF, an international consulting firm, for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

The Chicago Pre-College Science and Engineering Program (ChiS&E) was one of 30 grantees from a pool of 1,110 organizations that competed for three-year (2014 – 2017) grants in the Foundation’s Family Engagement program and is one of only six featured in a series of ICF case studies that examined exemplary approaches to engaging parents in low-income communities in advancing their children’s educational achievement. The study focused on ChiS&E’s K – 3 “Little Engineers Program.”

ChiS&E challenges the commonly held views that such subjects as physics and algebra are beyond the capacity of early elementary school children and that low-income African American and Latino parents lack the knowledge to support their children in these fields.

The organization has demonstrated, according to study authors, that African American and Latino children in grades K-3 in Chicago can grasp such concepts and develop a love of STEM learning and confidence as STEM learners. Their parents, meanwhile, develop knowledge of what it takes to prepare children for successful study and careers in

STEM fields, beginning in the early grades through high school.

ChiS&E parents have become advocates for high quality-STEM education in their children’s schools. As one parent interviewed by study authors put it, “Heads up, parents, this is what your children should be learning. It you don’t have it in your schools, request it, because this is what you’re going to need in order to prepare to compete nationally and internationally.”

ChiS&E aims to increase the number of African American and Latino students with the motivation and academic preparation to complete higher education programs and pursue careers in STEM fields. Its guiding principles and activities have been developed to prepare students to obtain four-year degrees in the nation’s top university science and engineering programs. They are modeled upon those of the award-winning Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering program, founded in 1976 and led (1976-2004) by Kenneth Hill, who subsequently founded ChiS&E in 2008.

ChiS&E provides hands-on, age-appropriate STEM activities on Saturdays at the University of Illinois at Chicago for students in grades K-8, serving over 400 students annually from 80 Chicago schools. Participants are 55% African American and 45% Latino; 53% girls and 47% boys. More than 25 teachers, mainly current Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers, serve as instructors.

Parents must attend with their child in grades K-3 and 5, and each semester all parents

must attend a Parent Orientation and, for middle school parents, a parent/child field trip to the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Summer camps are offered for rising eighth and ninth grade students.

Weaving math, physics, chemistry, engineering, and broader learning skills through its curriculum, ChiS&E offers K-3 students a structured sequence of topics: kindergarten – Little Civil Engineer, first grade – Little Chemical Engineer, second grade – Little Electrical Engineer, and third grade – Little Mechanical Engineer.

Case study authors noted significant benefits of children and parents learning side-byside in the Saturday class sessions. Parents discovered that their children have STEM talents. Children saw that their parents valued education. Parents and children bonded as co-learners. Study authors noted that as a result of parents’ participation, they “learned the material and pedagogy ChiS&E teachers used,

making them better teachers for their child.”

The authors reported that ChiS&E “helped both parents and children understand the level of math and science students should learn at each grade level and raised parents expectations for the quality of education their children should receive at each grade level.”

The study found benefits as well for the CPS teachers who serve as program instructors. They gained knowledge and skills in STEM concepts and teaching techniques and in parent engagement that they have taken back to their CPS classrooms and schools.

ChiS&E’s emphases on starting early with STEM education and developing the capacity of public school teachers align with a report recently released by the Kapor Center for Social Impact, “The Leaky Tech Pipeline,” which states, “In reality, the tech pipeline begins early, in elementary school.” The report calls for greater equity and opportunities for underrepresented minority student in PreK – 12 education, including access to extracurricular activities, and improved teacher quality.

Is the NRA an educational organization?

A lobby group? A nonprofit? A media outlet? Yes

he National Rifle Association has hit more turbulence since 17 people died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, than the nation’s biggest gun advocacy group is

accustomed to after such tragedies.

Anti-NRA memes implying that the nonprofit abuses its tax-exempt status went viral. A petition calling on the authorities to audit the group and consider revoking its exemption circulated. At least 10 companies dropped the special deals they used to offer its millions of members amid widespread concern about the NRA’s role in squelching gun control and a growing interest in how the group operates.

As a law professor who teaches and writes about tax-exempt organizations, I would like to explain how the NRA retains its nonprofit status despite the vast amount of influence it exerts over politicians.

SOCIAL WELFARE The NRA is actually a bundle of

organizations. The largest one, in terms of how much it spends, is the National Rifle Association of America. Originally formed in 1871, this NRA branch claims to have about 5 million members, although some investigative reporters question that assertion.

It has operated as a social welfare organization since 1944.

Like public charities, these groups, are exempt from taxation on the money they take in. Also known as 501(c)(4), based on language in the tax code, they differ from public charities in a few ways.

First, donors to social welfare organizations can’t deduct their gifts from their taxable income. Second, these organizations may support and oppose political candidates. Third, social welfare organizations can engage in

unlimited lobbying, as long as that effort to sway lawmakers and policymakers is related to their core mission.

Like charities, social welfare groups must spend all their revenue on work tied to their mission or shoring up their endowments. They can’t, in other words, distribute any profits left over after paying their bills to their leaders, their funders or anyone else.

The NRA has five main missions: protecting the Second Amendment, promoting public safety, training for marksmanship and gun safety, promoting competitive shooting and improving hunter safety. Among other things, it publishes the American Rifleman, American Hunter, America’s 1st Freedom and Shooting Illustrated magazines and produces NRATV programs. It also has a lobbying arm, created in 1975, called the Institute for Legislative Action.

New biography sheds light on religious influences on iconic jazz songstress Billie Holiday

S

oulful jazz singer Billie Holiday is remembered today for her unique sound, troubled personal history, and a catalogue that includes such resonant songs as “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.” Holiday and her music were also strongly

shaped by religion, often in surprising ways. This April, Penn State University Press will release Tracy Fessenden’s Religion Around Billie Holiday, a compelling new book that examines the spiritual and religious forces that left their mark on the performer during her short but influential life.

Mixing elements of biography with the history of race and American music, Tracy Fessenden explores the multiple religious influences on Holiday’s life and sound, including her time spent as a child in a Baltimore convent, the echoes of black Southern churches in the blues she encountered in brothels, the secular riffs on ancestral faith in the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, and the Jewish songwriting culture of Tin Pan Alley. Religion Around Billie Holiday will be released on April 7th, the 103rd anniversary of Billie Holiday’s birth.

ear can paralyze you and prevent you from reaching your goals. Researchers have found that tackling your fear head-on may enable you to deal with it better. Fear is one of your most powerful emotions and if left unchecked, can prevent you from achieving a state of total happiness.

It is impossible to achieve greatness if you are held back by fear. Fear is a choice. Being afraid is a decision based on your perceptions, and if you are not mindful, your fear can triumph over your faith.

Here are several things that you can do to eliminate your fear.

THINK POSITIVE

ositive thinking can help eliminate the negativity associated with fear. Use affirmations to help increase your confidence and prevent negative thinking. Your words and thoughts are very important. Thinking positive and visualizing good things can help you see the big picture and help you realize that your fear is irrational.

LISTEN TO MUSIC

M

usic can be an effective tool for working through your fears. Relaxing music can calm the jitters associated with fear. Soothing music has been known to reduce both heart rate and blood pressure, thus causing a calming effect among people who are experiencing fear and anxiety.

KEEP A JOURNAL OF GOOD THINGS

ou have many things to be grateful for.

Whenever you begin to feel fearful, remind yourself of the things that really matter to you and be grateful for them. When you find yourself focusing on a fear, replace it with thoughts of what you are thankful for. Jot down three great things that happened to you today. Keeping focused on the positive will really make a difference in eliminating and overcoming fear. Eliminating fear is an excellent way to increase your happiness.

Is the NRA an educational organization?

Continued from page 3 In 2016 this social welfare group raised almost US$337 million in revenue, with about half coming from membership dues. The rest largely came from its media operations, donations and grants. It draws a growing share of its income, reportedly, from gunmakers rather than gunowners.

POLITICKING AND LOBBYING The NRA also runs a political action committee, the NRA Political Victory Fund, through which it backs electoral candidates.

The NRA’s political spending more than doubled between the 2012 and 2016 electoral cycles, rising to $54.4 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan group that tracks the money reported to the government in federal elections. About $31 million of that sum supported Trump’s candidacy.

The gun group’s lobbying arm, which is technically a division of its social welfare group, spent more than $5 million in 2017, actively seeking to influence politicians or public officials regarding specific policies or pieces of legislation. It roughly tripled those expenditures in the last decade.

CHARITIES The NRA also runs four affiliated charities:

the NRA Foundation, Inc., the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund, the NRA Freedom Action Foundation and the NRA Special Contribution Fund.

Like thousands of churches, universities, museums and advocacy groups of other stripes, these are 501(c)(3) groups. That means they are excused from paying taxes on most of their income. In addition, their donors may get tax breaks when they deduct the value of their gifts to charities from their taxable income.

To maintain that coveted incentive, these nonprofits can’t endorse or oppose political candidates. They also can’t do more than minimal amounts of lobbying.

What do the NRA’s charities do?

The NRA Foundation does public outreach to promote marksmanship and gun safety through grants to shooting programs run by everyone from the Boy Scouts to local police departments. It also advocates for protecting the constitutional right to bear arms, as does the NRA Freedom Action Foundation.

The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund provides legal and financial aid to people and groups dealing with lawsuits related to the NRA’s goals, and backs legal research on federal

and state constitutional provisions that have to with guns.

The NRA Special Contribution Fund, focuses on marksmanship and firearm safety, and operates the Whittington Center in New Mexico, a vast shooting range.

COMMON BUT WITH A CAVEAT This multilayered structure isn’t unique.

For instance, the Sierra Club, a social welfare organization that advocates for environmental protection, is affiliated with the Sierra Club Foundation, a charity. The American Civil Liberties Union, a civil rights group partners with the ACLU Foundation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a charity that runs reproductive health care clinics, is affiliated with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a social welfare group that lobbies.

This arrangement helps charities preserve donors’ tax breaks without sacrificing the ability of their affiliated membership groups to engage on the day’s issues. Taken to its logical extreme, however, this dynamic can flout restrictions on what the government defines as legitimate charitable gifts.

Without such limits, what’s to stop me or anyone else from getting tax breaks for donations that will pay for lobbying? I could give it to the charity of my choice, which in turn could hand my dollars to its related social welfare organization. I’d get my tax deduction, and the group that supports my policy preferences could use the money I donated for lobbying.

The IRS prohibits these financial switcheroos. While charities may contribute to their affiliated social welfare organization, both parties must keep records that prove the charitable gifts don’t fund lobbying or political candidacies.

The NRA Foundation made a nearly $20 million grant to the National Rifle Association of America, in 2016. But that did not necessarily flout any tax laws.

Still, the NRA may sometimes let donations flow too freely between its affiliates, as Yahoo News has reported, in ways that violate federal electoral laws.

Running so many different kinds of organizations, each subject to different rules, is an immense and difficult undertaking. It’s worth keeping an eye on the NRA to ensure that it manages to stay within the lines the law has painted.

Illinoisans pick ‘Blues Brothers’ as top movie SPRINGFIELD – Illinoisans have chosen

“The Blues Brothers” as the top movie in state history, embracing a film that celebrates car crashes, classic songs, Chicago landmarks and two shady characters trying desperately to do the right thing.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “A League of Their Own” came next in the online voting, which was part of the Illinois Top 200 project.

The project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the best movies, most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

More than 1,500 people voted on the top movies. Voting in the next category, top businesses, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200. com.

“I’m a big fan of all three of the top movies, so I’m thrilled by the results. More importantly,

Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation partner to remount Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks CHICAGO – The Chicago

International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation are partnering to present Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, oneweekend-only, March 30 and 31 at Chicago’s historic Studebaker Theater, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Performances of Manual Cinema’s unforgettable multi-media retelling of Brooks’s life and work are Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25; $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in advance online at chicagopuppetfest.org.

No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks combines poetry, puppetry and live jazz to bring to life the story of one of Chicago’s most beloved figures. Gwendolyn Brooks was an icon, a poet laureate, and a Pulitzer Prize winner—but she was also a treasured educator and mentor to the countless writers and children who knew her as their very own “Miss Brooks.” Weaving poetry, storytelling, sound design, original live music, and striking visuals, No Blue Memories is an exploration of

Brooks’s beloved city and a story of how she navigated identity, craft, and politics over the course of one of the most remarkable careers in American literary history.

The Poetry Foundation commissioned Manual Cinema in 2016 to visually represent the life and work of Gwendolyn Brooks in a way that would be accessible for new fans and enticing for Brooks appreciators alike. The resulting production, No Blue Memories, received its world premiere in November 2017, what would have been Brooks’s hundredth year.

The 70-minute show combines intricate paper puppetry, live actors working in shadow, and an original score played live on stage. The script was co-written by Chicago poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall.

The music was commissioned from Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods, who were granted permission from the Brooks estate for the first time to write a song using Brooks’s famous poem “We Real Cool.” The production also samples many of Brooks’s most memorable poems including “Eventide,” Beverly Hills, Chicago,” “Speech to the Young, Speech to the Progress Toward,” and “Chicago Picasso.”

GENERAL ASSIGNMENT REPORTER The Chicago Citizen Newspaper Group Inc. is seeking a part-time General Assignment Reporter to gather and write about news in and around the Chicagoland area.

The Citizen is the largest chain of black-owned newspapers in the Midwest. It is comprised of five weekly publications. For 52 years, the Citizen has been an integral part of the community and covers neighborhoods such Chatham, South Shore, Englewood, Hyde Park, areas in the South Suburbs as well as many other neighborhoods.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to gather, write and report on news in communities encompassing the Citizen's coverage areas.

The ability to research and write thought provoking stories on deadline, pitch story ideas, conduct interviews and find sources to discuss topics is an essential function of the position.

The ideal candidate should also possess the ability to identify excellent photo opportunities, take photos and complete an in-house column efficiently.

Applicants should be proficient in using Microsoft Office, Email, Smart phones as well as writing captions and catchy headlines for articles.

A Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, or a related degree and at least six months work experience in writing for a print publication serving as a general assignment reporter is preferred.
