Sen. Jones demands funding for Roseland and safety-net hospitals

State Senator Emil Jones III (D - CHICAGO) recently joined elected officials at Roseland Community Hospital to discuss the financial future of Roseland and safety-net hospitals in Illinois. “Safety-net hospitals provide quality health care to the poorest communities, which is something that all people in Illinois deserve, regardless of their race or income,” said Jones. “These hospitals also employ an estimated 25,000 people in Illinois and 23,000 people across the Chicagoland area.” To remain at a sustainable funding level for the year, Roseland has laid off nearly seven percent of its staff and reduced the pay of all of its doctors and nurses. As of now, all “fixed payments” to hospitals will sunset on June 30, 2018. The hospital assessment program, a combination of state and federal funds that provides financial relief across the state, is up for negotiation, creating uncertainty among safetynet hospitals. “Ensuring safety-net hospital funding for the next fiscal year has to be a top priority in Springfield,” Jones said. In the past, it has taken each hospital assessment 12-15 months for federal approval. It is estimated that taxed payments account for almost 50 percent of all payments to safety-net hospitals.

Sandrel Sanicole Young, a Chicago filmmaker, director and Columbia College graduate is currently working on a short film called “Training Wheels,” which is inspired by Young’s relationship with her father, based on love, forgiveness, trust and family. Young explained that a lot of African American men, like her dad, don’t like expressing their emotions or feelings about their livelihood, which sometimes strains child-father relationships. So, she created Training Wheels to highlight men being placed in a position that ultimately helps them become a better individual for their family. “It took me time to understand my [father’s] struggles and understand that he couldn’t be what I wanted him to be,” Young said. “So, I had to change my attitude about my father and when I came into the knowledge of his struggles, I was able to be that [loving] person for him.” She continued to say that having both roles of a mother and father is important for a child because each parent brings something different to the table and teaches on different levels of experience. “The roles of a father and mother should never be taken lightly because they both go hand to hand,” Young said. “It’s about loving unconditionally and seeing past the pain that a parent may have caused and find out what could be the root of the pain.” She says she hopes people think outside of themselves

and make sure that if there is any misunderstanding, miscommunication or loss of love between a family member, they seek out information to understand the family members’ hardship and love beyond it. “I think that is the biggest message of Training Wheels,” Young said. “We need to decide to be better people for our family members or parents who may be hurting and not only focus on the pain they’ve caused, but focus on mending the relationship rather than walking away from them.” Young invested $5000 of her own money into the Training Wheels film project and recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise an additional $5000 for postproduction. In less than one week, she raised her $5,000 campaign goal and was able to bring on Comedian Lil Rel as a producer. Young said the Training Wheels film will first run through the Film Festival circuit before being released to the public. She continues to advise young aspiring filmmakers or directors to pick up a camera and begin filming what they find interesting. “Even if you don’t know what the correct structure of film-making is, it’s always good to go out and experiment to find your voice,” Young said. “You won’t be able to find your voice until you actually go out and do it. Ugo Okere, a 21 year-old community organizer in the Budlong Woods neighborhood and senior at Loyola University Chicago, recently announced his candidacy for Alderman of the 40th Ward. “As a lifelong resident of Budlong Woods, and a millennial inspired by this political moment, the time is now for a new generation of leadership in the 40th Ward and across Chicago” said Okere. “I am running for Alderman of the 40th Ward because after 35 years of disconnected leadership, it’s time for a new, progressive change.” An immigrant from Nigeria, and son of a taxi driver and factory worker, Okere’s family moved to Chicago and settled on the north side when he was 3-months old. A graduate of Budlong Elementary and Lane Tech High School, Ugo will receive his diploma from Loyola University this spring. Today, Ugo serves on the Loyola University Senate, and is chair of Fureza del Sol, a youth community organization that works on immigrant rights and violence prevention.

The Chicago regionals of the Future City Competition which introduces 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to engineering with SimCity software was recently held at the University of Illinois Chicago campus. The Future City Competition gives students from across the country the opportunity to design cities with simulation software, build scale models, write essays and give oral presentations on their city’s design. In the US, over 40,000 students, representing 1,350 schools, take part in the Future City Competition. One of the nation’s leading engineering education programs and among the most popular, Future City has received national recognition and acclaim for its role in encouraging middle school students to develop their interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Kari K. Steele and five MWRD employees participated in the weekend’s events. Terence Maiellaro, Senior Mechanical Engineer; Michael Zigulich, Associate Civil Engineer; and Lou Storino, Principal Civil Engineer, participated as preliminary round judges. Their role was to serve as a preliminary model and presentation judge for students’ diorama model and presentation on the day of the competition. “Participating in the Future City Competition is just one example of the many ways that MWRD staff contribute to support youth and other community projects throughout the year. It is important to engage and encourage students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math at a young age so that they have a better understanding of the career opportunities that are available,” said Commissioner Kari K. Steele. “As an agency that relies on the skills and expertise of employees who have studied STEM curricula, we are proud to have the opportunity to support Future City,” said MWRD President Mariyana Spyropoulos.

Funeral Services held for Mayor Dr. Irene H. Brodie

Visitation and funeral services for Mayor Dr. Irene H. Brodie of Robbins were held at The Great Hope M.B. Church, located on 13617 Lawndale Ave, in Robbins on February 2 and 3. Mayor Brodie was a long standing member of the Robbins community as well as a civil and woman’s right’s pioneer. In a statement, released by Keith Freeman, village administrator (on behalf of Mayor Tyrone Ward and the entire village of Robbins), citizens expressed their condolences saying, “We thank Mayor Brodie for 35 years of service, the countless scholarships she provided to our youth and being a voice of protection for our great village.”

Martin’s International, a non-profit organization, recently held a press conference in honor of the 37th Annual Chicago Music Awards and announced nominees for the upcoming awards event. The press conference was held at 14 Parish Restaurant located on 2333 S. Michigan Ave. Each year, the Chicago Music Awards pays tribute to leaders representing Chicago’s diverse music industry. The event also celebrates the city’s musical heritage. The best of 2018 entertainers in over 35 categories from Pop, Hip Hop/Rap, Reggae, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Country/Western, Gospel, EDM and Latin was announced during the press conference. “We like to share with community residents who are the nominees of the Chicago Music Awards every year so they can begin creating a conversation about the event,” said A.C. During the press conference, Mama Curtis, researcher of the Chicago Music Awards Nominees said, “It was an honor to be celebrating with each [person],” and she announced the nominees for Best Gospel Entertainer. Ex-Offender Finds Redemption via Restaurant Grand Opening By Christopher Shuttlesworth Nichelle Benford, a pioneer of the food truck business, recently opened her first restaurant named “Dream Chef Kitchen Restaurant & Catering,” after experiencing entrepreneurial setbacks and serving prison time. Benford will operate her previously established catering business and mentoring program for employment-challenged young women at her new restaurant, located on 611 S. California Ave. Dream Chef Kitchen Restaurant & Catering will serve local companies, organizations and diners “on-the-go” and those who want a sit-down meal. “I’ve always dreamt about this day, but I never imagined it would come,” she said. “I know the food business and it’s something I love to do and look forward to doing every day, but what the experience of opening this new restaurant taught me was the importance of having a good support network.” Benford explained that she was raised by her grandmothers and aunts who were all really good cooks and ultimately, helped her find a passion for cooking when receiving her first cook book at five years old. “I have always had that joy, comfort and family experience growing up,” Benford said. She explained that while in Culinary School, she was indicted and sentenced to 37 months for perjury and obstruction of justice. Benford continued to say she was released from prison after 14 months, with an additional six months being served in a halfway house, due to Benford taking a drug program, which resulted in her shorter sentence. “I started catering again immediately because I was really focused on what I wanted to be and do when I got home,” Benford said. “I took that time [in prison] to study, learn, grow and pray.” She partnered with a friend in the food trucking business and experienced a lot of success, but unfortunately they both parted ways due to business disagreements. “I felt defeated that the partnership didn’t work out because I split ties with a friend that I grew up with, but I ended up starting Dream Chef Kitchen Restaurant & Catering,” Benford said. “My attorney, from The West Side

Justice Center, who lost my (prison) sentencing case, wanted to partner with me on a restaurant.” She explained that her attorney put together a team and introduced her to an investor who put up the first $25,000 for Dream Chef Kitchen Restaurant & Catering. Benford said she is now excited because Dream Chef Catering will be full of redemption and will serve great food for the community. “I made it against the odds,” she said. “When you go through certain things you feel like your life is over and hopeless. Even with being an entrepreneur, it is very difficult to find funding, but when we didn’t know how to get funding, the Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives Micro Finance Group (CNIMFG) loaned us another $50,000 to complete the project.” Benford said she plans to hire family members, ex-offenders and community residents in need of jobs. “CNIMFG is honored to be a community partner of Benford’s and other small businesses like hers,” David Doig, president of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI) said. “Thousands of men and women from Illinois prisons each year go back to prison within three years, but only a few become entrepreneurs and start new businesses of their own, making it far less likely to return to prison. Our financial services and technical assistance are helping to create new businesses that are reducing recidivism, improving people’s lives and providing the amenities that strengthen our communities.” Benford advises entrepreneurs who have dreams to set out a plan and build it up with a team that understands the vision. “If you have a dream then you need to have a plan and resources,” Benford said. “A lot of times we are afraid of asking and putting it out there that this is what we want to do. But when you put something out there, you open up the doors to the available resources. I couldn’t have opened up Dream Chef Kitchen Restaurant & Catering without building a team of people who knew about funding. U.S. Army Vet and Single Mother of Five Wins $5,000 Grand Prize in the Billion Dollar Challenge Rewards Sweepstakes Being a solider in the U.S. Army was one of the greatest challenges that Tameka Davis of Fairfield, California faced in life. Her battles with debt proved equally challenging. But after being randomly selected as the Grand Prize winner of the 2017 Billion Dollar Challenge (BDC) Rewards sweepstakes, Tameka said she feels more than blessed, and well on her way to financial freedom. “I won the Grand Prize? Praise God! In Jesus’ name, I claim it!” was Tameka’s immediate reaction to learning the news that she won the $5,000. She said she’ll use the money to establish an emergency fund for her family – something she wasn’t able to do this same time last year. Tameka learned about the dfree® Financial Freedom Movement, which launched the BDC, shortly before attending its first West Coast Regional Conference in March 2017. “I was in so much debt. My debt to income ratio was ridiculous,” she said. Much of her debt resulted from a “terrible divorce” in 2012. After, Tameka ended up moving herself and five young children (now ages 6 to 15) from her home state of Kentucky to California, so the eldest ones could be closer to their father. She said she made the mistake of subletting her home to “friends” while she took on a new rental burden in her new state. Later, she found out the friends failed to pay the mortgage and, eventually, the bank foreclosed on her Kentucky home. By 2013, facing homelessness, she had to declare bankruptcy. She said she didn’t know what she was going to do until a woman at church, Carrie Rasheed, approached her and told her that God told her to give her a place to stay. Because she had steady income from her military service, since 2014, Tameka rented and then tried to buy a new home but always was rejected due to the bankruptcy and her debt to income ratio. Then she was sent on a mission to gather data about dfree® to help her boss set up a training program. The conference was held at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield. “The day I walked into that church, I believe that,

God used the dfree® program to wake me up and let me see my blessings,” Tameka said. Soaking up as much of the conference as she could, Tameka said she was particularly empowered by a workshop led by dfree® Executive Director Tamika Stembridge. While she gathered material for her boss, she purchased the Say Yes To No Debt: 12 Steps to Financial Freedom book and workbook for herself. Soon after, she followed the books’ guidance. “I had a hard time tracking receipts,” Tameka said, noting that you don’t have to be a perfect participant to benefit from dfree®. “dfree® made me aware of my spending habits. It helped me free up some money I didn’t realize I had coming in.” For example, before dfree® she would give her kids money for allowance and not really monitor how they were spending it. She realized that not only was she wasting money but she was teaching her kids to do the same. “I prayed and prayed and asked God to order my steps and touch the people’s hearts who were making decisions,” about her financial future, Tameka said. “It changed my perspective entirely.” When asked to offer advice to others who may be reluctant or afraid to join the dfree® financial freedom movement, Tameka said: “Taking the first step to gain more knowledge is the best thing you can do. If you don’t understand what overwhelming debt can do to your future, you won’t take steps to change it.” She added, the dfree® program has helped me to realize that I am not alone in my debt challenges. AN INSPIRED LIFE When living the inspired life, we must decide whether the inspiration God gives us will be nurtured by our design, or ignored by default. American politician Frank Clark said, “What great accomplishments we would have in the world if everyone had done what they intended to do. ” So why do we sometimes lack the necessary inspiration to execute? While in Canada, I once saw a beautiful piece of graffiti art that said, “We’re inspired but too tired. An inspired life is a choice wholly based upon attitude rather than circumstance. If you do not develop your own design and become responsible for how your inspiration will be used, you will by default empower other people and circumstances to not only direct, but also benefit from your inspiration. Your design setting directs inspiration according to your vision, while your default setting directs inspiration according to your script. The design setting gives clarity to the pattern. The default setting gives you back the baggage and excuses of past failings. True inspiration enables us to push past thehumd rum existence in which we now find ourselves. When we are truly inspired it is as if the very breath and life of Christ is arousing, animating, and empowering us with the Spirit to do something amazing. Inspiration links us with divine influence and brings us back to our purpose, for inspiration and purpose are alwayssynchronized. Job 32:8 says, “There is a spirit in man and the breath of the almighty gives them understanding.” Get in sync with the divine design of your inspiration. It will help you better understand the unique gifts that reinforce your unique contribution to the world. Now is the appointed time to live an inspired life.

Clear winter roads: What works and what doesn’t (BPT) - It is no surprise that in the winter we see many articles about how our roads get plowed and treated. Nor is it particularly surprising that winter maintenance practices often lead to debates over different methods and materials used to keep roads clear. One often-heard rebuke is that road authorities should go back to using sand or abrasives for winter maintenance, instead of using salt. Unfortunately, that would be very counterproductive for many reasons. Sand alone does not melt any snow or ice. Any time melting has been associated with sand, it is because a small amount of salt (about 10 percent or less) is typically included in the stockpile to stop the sand from freezing solid. It is sometimes said that some melting occurs because the color of the sand creates excess solar heating, but that is minimal compared to the normal solar heating occurring on roads anyway. This matters because we need roads to be free of snow and ice in the winter. A study by Global Insights indicated that when roads are impassable because of snow or ice, a state can lose between $300 million and $700 million in economic activity per day. A study from Marquette University has shown that a safe and sustainable

snowfighting program that uses road salt in an appropriate manner will reduce accidents by up to 88 percent. Sand does provide a temporary increase in friction. However, to supply that increase in friction, it has to be located between the tires of the vehicles on the road and the snow or ice on the road. But the sand does not stay where it is needed for very long, especially at highway speeds. Studies have found that the friction increase due to sand disappears after 10 to 20 vehicles have

driven over it at highway speeds. So the benefits of sand in terms of increasing friction are very fleeting in high-speed and hightraffic situations. In addition, to get the friction benefits of sand, it has to be applied at much higher rates than salt. This means that trucks must be refilled more often, and when a truck is in the yard being refilled, it is not out on the road system plowing and applying materials appropriately. Some believe that there is no environmental impact from the use of sand, but this is not the case. When abrasives like sand settle in river beds, they choke off access of aquatic species’ eggs to oxygen, thus reducing their value as spawning grounds, potentially putting the breeding of certain fish species at risk. The other danger is to air quality. As cars drive over the sand and other abrasives, these get ground up and become dust. Both the city of Denver, Colorado, and Washoe County, Nevada, where air pollution is a particular concern, require that any abrasives used be vacuumed up no more than 72 hours after the end of the storm. This cleanup adds significantly to the cost of using abrasives. When properly applied at the right place, at the right time and in the right amount, road salt is the single most effective, economic and environmental way to keep our roads passable and people safe in the winter.

What you should know to prepare for a blood test (BPT) - A new survey reveals Americans are not aware of what to report prior to a blood test. Only half (52 percent) believe it is very important to report use of supplements to their healthcare provider before getting a blood test. With recent interest in the use of supplements like biotin as beauty treatments, it’s especially critical for consumers, doctors and lab personnel to talk before blood tests because very high doses of supplements could interfere with some test results. The possibility of interference in blood testing is low, but if you’re taking high-dose biotin for hair, skin or nail health, for example, it is best to inform your doctor before a blood test. Just as you may need to fast before certain types of tests, you may need to hold off on taking supplements like biotin for at least eight hours before blood work. The survey, commissioned by Roche Diagnostics, also found that most Americans (85 percent) expect their physician to provide complete instructions on how to prepare for a blood test. “Many factors - from stress, to prescription medication, to vitamins - can affect blood test results, so it’s important to be proactive in communicating about medicines or supplements you’re taking rather than waiting to be asked,” said Dr. Emily Jungheim, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
