briefly CHICAGO BULLS LAUNCH RING OF HONOR AND ANNOUNCE INAUGURAL CLASS 13 Individuals and the 1995-96 team to be celebrated on January 11 and 12 CHICAGO – The Chicago Bulls named the inaugural class for the organization’s new Ring of Honor, which will recognize and celebrate past players, coaches and front office staff who made outstanding contributions and helped define the organization throughout its history. The Bulls will celebrate the first class, which includes 13 individuals and the 1995-96 team, with several events in January including a halftime presentation during the Bulls game against the Golden State Warriors on January 12 and a private gala at the United Center on January 11, both proudly presented by Magellan Corporation. Fans will be able to engage with the Ring of Honor through a United Center atrium experience that will be open to the public from January 10 through January 12, as well as a website that will launch in early January.

The Bulls will add to the Ring of Honor every two years with the next class being inducted in 2026.

Accelerator Program Helps Business Owners Build Bankability Continued from page 1

The full-service business development and organizational management consulting firm has partnered with JP Morgan Chase & Co. for the Black Professional Entrepreneurs Resurgence® Accelerator. Fifteen Chicago-based business owners have participated in a sixweek cohort.

Hardwick has been on the operational side of businesses for 25 years.

She also about the methodology and mechanics of running a business.

She started working with start-ups and hopefuls.

She spent a year and a half learning how to work directly with people. Once she figured out what she needed most as an entrepreneur, she was able to create The CEO Performance Manager, a business development program. It measures the performance of businesses through a review system that helps businesses assess how they are meeting the needs of their customers.

During the accelerator program, business owners learn operations skills that will build capacity and bankability, increase supply readiness, they will be able to take their businesses to the next stage of growth.

Hardwick is able to connect with the business owners as people and help them build their dreams. The business owners that were chosen for the accelerator program have been in operation for at least one year and have an annual revenue of $250,000. Hardwick said the end goal is for the business owners to walk away from the program with the access to capital, gain the collaborative partnerships they need and the ability to build more, so they can do more business, and they can go into greater corporate opportunities. She also hopes the business owners can go from somewhat knowledgable about operational finance to very knowledgeable about it, and they can create a forecast for their incoming year.

The mission of the Black Professional Entrepreneurs Resurgence® Accelerator program is to create a sustainable, small business sector with Black business professionals who are building a legacy for their families and their communities, but they can also teach and increase the capacity of their colleagues.

“No matter the color of their skin, access to information should be available to them. The end goal is to make sure we are smarter, we’re much more aware, we have access to resources. They have tangible tools that they receive in this program and they have valuable relationships they can continue to build on,” she said.

Hardwick said that The Kyra Company can run the program at any time. She said Chicago will have access to the program and the version of it that will come.

Gov. Pritzker Celebrates Launch of the 100th Community Solar Project in Northern Illinois The solar site will help customers save money and reduce their carbon footprint CHICAGO – Governor JB Pritzker joined solar developer Reactivate and ComEd in Chicago Heights to announce the substantial completion of the 100th community solar site in northern Illinois that will serve mostly low- to moderate income ComEd customers, and is one of the first community solar sites located in Cook County. The Verduin solar farm is planned to be in service by the end of December and will help the residents subscribing to the project by reducing their energy bills and their carbon footprint.

“Since day one as Governor, I’ve made it my mission to advance clean energy throughout our state— ushering in a new era of environmental justice and sustainability for every community,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “That’s why, in 2021, I signed my administration’s landmark Climate and Equitable Jobs Act which increased funding for the Illinois Solar for All program—giving lower-income customers access to initiatives like Reactivate’s Verduin community solar project. This is exactly the kind of partnership that benefits our communities, our environment, and our

economy all in one—and I am so thankful for ComEd and Reactivate’s leadership and collaboration to make our vision a reality.”

ComEd customers will not need to install solar panels in their homes to receive the benefits of the project. Through the community solar programs, residents will be part of a solar energy “farm” of solar panels and will receive a credit from ComEd for their portion of the energy produced by the project.

In Illinois, community solar customers can subscribe up to 110 percent of their last twelve months of electricity usage. Energy generated by the community solar project flows to ComEd’s grid and becomes part of the overall energy supply.

Chicago, Ill. — In recognition of the financial challenges created by stubborn inflation, Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin is rolling out eight tips this holiday season for giving thoughtful gifts while keeping expenses under control.

Due to increased costs for items like groceries, rent and utilities, nearly 75% of all consumers are planning to make cutbacks on their spending this holiday season according to a recent CNBC by Morning Consult study. In fact, many holiday shoppers are planning to purchase fewer items and leaving cherished friends and acquaintances off their shopping list.

For others it also means buying now and paying later, a scheme which can be more costly than imagined and can lead to financial hardship.

“The most reported stressful parts of the holiday season are affordability and picking out gifts,” said Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin. “However, spending less on holiday gifts should not mean having to compromise on thoughtfulness or joy. These thoughtful gift suggestions will help Chicagoans get through the holiday season with their financial health intact.”

8 Holiday Shopping Tips for Tackling Inflation: 1. Create a holiday budget: Look at your current debt, do the math and make a gift giving list that fits within your overall household budget. It is recommended to spend no more than 1.5% of your annual salary on holiday expenses.

2. Stack rewards: Combine several shopping rewards programs to maximize discounts, points, and cash back on a single purchase.

Many credit cards offer additional discounts for purchases at your favorite stores. To see if your credit card comes with any special offers, check your credit card issuers app or website.

3. Go homemade: “Do-It-Yourself ” or make-at-home gifts might be appropriate for some on your shopping list, such as grandparents and

kids’ teachers.

4. Avoid “shopping momentum” and stay Zen: You’re more likely to keep spending once you’ve started, so stick to your shopping list. Avoid the buying frenzy and comparing spending habits with others’ habits.

5. Make your own discounts: Use coupons and cashback sites and apps when making purchases and consider price-matching. Before running to several stores to save money, learn about a store’s price-matching policies. For example, a store might be willing to give the same price on an item if you can prove the same item is being offered at another store for less.

6. Support local businesses: Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy employing approximately half of all Chicagoans.

Shopping at local merchants is often beneficial to the community and can benefit consumers. Earn cash back from credit cards when shopping at participating local merchants.

7. Take advantage of payment options: Make sure you clearly understand the total cost of the purchase, which may incur additional fees with “pay later” options. Remember, it’s best to use your credit card for items you can pay off in full when the credit card bill comes due, avoiding costly interest charges and other fees.

8. Make memories: Spend time with family and friends (low-cost activities like building a snowman, baking cookies, etc.) and have fun instead of spending money.

SHERIFF DART, ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE GIANNOULIAS PARTNER TO PROVIDE STATE ID CARDS TO INDIVIDUALS LEAVING COOK COUNTY JAIL Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced today a partnership to provide State Identification Cards for individuals leaving Cook County Jail.

The partnership is the first of its kind for a county jail.

Government issued IDs are critical for enrolling in educational programs, onboarding for jobs as well as obtaining housing and government benefits. Individuals in custody may have lost their ID cards or they may have expired while in custody, and they may face challenges in attempting to renew them after returning to the community.

“We know that people who have a safe place to live, are receiving services they need, and are employed are less likely to reoffend,” Sheriff Dart said. “Having a government-issued ID is the first step to obtaining those things. So, this initiative not only helps people with their individual needs but also helps public safety.”

The program is initially working with individuals who either have previously applied for a State ID card or driver’s license, or have access to documents, such as birth certificates and social security cards, to apply for the first time. The program will gradually expand to provide IDs to everyone in Cook County Jail custody.

“Providing individuals who have completed their sentences with essential resources and tools upon their release increases their chances to successfully re-enter society, become self-sufficient and rebuild their lives,” Secretary Giannoulias said. “A valid state ID will help them with basic needs like locating housing, securing a job, opening a bank account, enrolling in assistance programs, and attaining reliable transportation. Fulfilling these basic needs reduces recidivism, saves taxpayer money, and makes our communities stronger.”

Sheriff ’s Office staff will work with the interested participants to complete the application forms and take photographs. If necessary, Sheriff ’s Office staff can also help first-time applicants with accessing vital documents they already have such as birth certificates or social security cards.

The collected information will be sent electronically via a secure transfer to the Secretary of State’s Office. After the Secretary of State’s Office staff determines applicants have met the requirements for an ID card, they will be mailed to their residences.

Prior to the partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office, Cook County Jail worked with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office to provide municipal ID cards for individuals in custody who were Chicago residents.

The Secretary of State’s Office launched a similar program in 2021 for returning residents released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody, issuing more than 2,100 ID cards to program participants to date.

Winter Woes! New Survey Finds Most Americans Dread Heating Bills

(StatePoint) From using a hairdryer to warm up their sheets to cuddling with their pet, Americans will do some crafty things to stay warm in the winter—especially if it means they can avoid turning up their thermostat.

A new survey conducted by Duck brand, which offers products that provide simple, imaginative and helpful solutions for a variety of tasks around the home, finds out why people go to such lengths. According to the research, 61% of people dread receiving their heating bill in the winter.

While the average monthly heating bill hovers between $100 to $200, respondents say the highest bill they’ve received in recent years ranges from $200 to $300, and 76% of people say they have experienced an increase in their bill over the past five years.

“It may seem like the first thing people would do if they’re cold is to turn up their thermostat, but that’s not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky, product manager for Weatherization at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand. “As it turns out, 80% of Americans say they have turned down their thermostat to save money in the winter.”

The chilly temperatures this time of year clearly have an impact on people’s daily habits and even their sleep. Sixty percent of Americans say they have woken up in the middle of the night due to being cold in the winter. Respondents say they have tried everything, from wearing socks and a sweatshirt to bed to sleeping with three or more blankets and using a space heater, to cut

However, there is a simple task that can help solve many of these woes: home weatherization. According to the research, more than half (51%) of Americans weatherize their home to prepare for the changing seasons, and 80% of people say they have noticed a decrease in their heating bills by using weatherizing solutions, such as window insulation kits, weatherstrip seals and door draft seals that slide on the bottom of the door to block drafts.
