CLINTON COLLEGE BECOMES A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE, JOINING HUNDREDS OF HBCUS ACROSS THE COUNTRY Clinton College, one of nation’s two-year historically Black colleges, has grown to four-year collegiate status. Joining more than one hundred HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), the college now offers four-year bachelor degrees to its students.

Clinton College is a historically black, private college in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It was founded as the Clinton Institute in 1894 and named after Bishop Caleb Isom Clinton, the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church’s Palmetto Conference presiding bishop at the time.

RNS FILE LAWSUIT AGAINST TRUMP ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, VA SECRETARY WILKIE Registered nurses with National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU) filed a lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs, Secretary Robert Wilkie, and the Trump administration charging they acted illegally in a “deliberate campaign to eviscerate collective bargaining rights of the VA nurses and other health care workers.” Nurses say by denying their union protections, the VA is attempting to limit a Veterans Affairs nurse’s ability to advocate for the highest quality of patient care.

In the lawsuit filed on November 16, the nurses contend this administration acted illegally in October when Secretary Wilkie rejected a contract reached by NNOC/NNU and VA negotiators, and ratified by the nurses. Furthermore, the nurses charge that this administration violated the Constitution and federal law when earlier this month Secretary Wilkie eliminated the scheduled time that nurses and other medical professionals use to advocate for coworkers’ rights on the job, and best care practices so RNs can provide high quality care for veterans. These hours are referred to as official time.

ILLINOIS MARKS FIVE YEARS OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY TUESDAY Illinois became the 16th state to legalize samesex marriage when marriage equality legislation was signed into law five years ago on Nov. 20, 2013. Five years later, State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) who sponsored the legislation said, “We must ensure we do not lose ground and in fact make progress in the fight for full, equal rights for same-sex couples.”

Although the law did not take effect until June 1, 2014, Chicago couple Vernita Gray and Patricia Ewert made history on Nov. 27, 2013, when they became the first same-sex couple to be married in Illinois. The women, well-known gay-rights activists, were granted an expedited marriage license because Gray was living with terminal breast cancer, and her last wish was to marry her longtime partner. Gray died March 19, 2014, less than three months before the law took effect. Since then, Cook County has recorded more than 10,000 same-sex marriage licenses.

The Greater Chatham Initiative recently hosted their inaugural fundraising gala, Greater Chatham Strong, at the Stony Island Arts Bank. Funds from the event will be used to further the organization’s mission to invest in the communities of Avalon Park, Auburn Gresham, Chatham, and Greater Grand Crossing.

“The Greater Chatham Initiative was founded about 2 years ago and it is an economic development organization that focuses on four communities that we call Greater Chatham. The neighborhoods are Avalon Park, Auburn Gresham, Chatham, and Greater Grand Crossing and anyplace else these four neighborhoods would be considered a mid-size city,” said Nedra Sims-Fears, executive director of the Greater Chatham Initiative.

The Greater Chatham community covers 25 square miles on the south side of Chicago and is home to about 124,000 people and 46,000 households, according to Sims-Fears.

“The reason why GCI was created is because as a community, we have to be more competitive. We are in Chicago, the city of big shoulders and 77 neighborhoods that 2.7 million people get to chose from when they decide where they want to live,” said Sims-Fears.

With the help of Congressman Bobby Rush and the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emmanuel, the Greater Chatham Initiative was created to shine a light on these four communities and learn how to best celebrate their assets, stay thriving, and create a strategy to distinguish the Greater Chatham area as an enchanting part of Chicago for potential homeowners and investors.

Money from the Greater Chatham Strong fundraiser will go towards the eight initiatives the organization operates under which all together push the community forward.

“We have eight initiatives that we are focused on and of those eight, four are not funded so we will use some of the proceeds from the Gala to help us with the four initiatives that are not funded,” said Sims-Fears.

Another upcoming event that is being or-

ganized by the Greater Chatham Initiative is Kwanza on the 9 which will feature Kwanza themed holiday displays in six big storefront windows on 79th Street during the month of December.

“We’ve all gone to what was Marshall Fields then and looked at the beautiful Christmas windows and downtown merchants also do a great job with Christmas windows so we said to our selves, “why can’t people see Christmas windows in our neighborhood?” So for the first time, we are going to have six big windows decorated on 79th street,” said Sims-Fears The Kwanza holiday displays will come just in time for the opening of the remodeled Whitney M. Young Jr. Library located at 7901 S King Dr. in the Greater Chatham area.

“The Whitney Young Library is going to open on Dec. 15th after getting it’s $12 million facelift and it is going to be one of the great new places on the 79th Street strip.

We wanted the block next to the library to look extra spiffy to match the new library,” said Sims-Fears.

High School Students Compete In Cooking Up Change Competition

Students from Chicago Public High Schools recently competed in the Healthy Schools Campaign’s Cooking up Change contest.

Students were asked to create healthy and delicious school meals that their peers would enjoy while meeting strict nutritional standards and a tight budget.

The Healthy Schools Campaign is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all students have access to healthy school environments where they can learn and thrive, according to their website.

“We’ve been around for about 15 years or so and we operate on the premise that healthy kids are better learners. Everything that we do is focused on helping to make sure that schools are safe and healthy places where students can learn and thrive. We look at school food, the amount of physical activity that students are getting, what sort of cleaning products are being used, whether or not there are school nurses on site, really all the things that go into making sure that schools are a safe and healthy environment,” said Sara Porter, vice president of External Affairs for the Healthy Schools Campaign.

Campaign to give students a fun way to have their voices heard when it comes to the meals they eat at school. The student chefs work to create school meals that are healthy and that taste good while still following strict nutritional standards and staying within the normal budget which is about $1.40 per meal.

“The program is a competition for high school students, that are part of a culinary program that is offered in about 20 Chicago Public High Schools, and brings them together around school food. The challenge for them is to create a healthy school meal that they are

excited about, that they want to eat, and that would be appealing to their peers and that could also be served in the school cafeteria.

All the meals meet the nutrition guidelines, the budget, and the realities for the federal school lunch program,” said Porter.

Students work on their meals during the school year and at the competition, they are able to serve them to the judges who then select a winning team. The winning team gets to have their dish served in every Chicago Public School (CPS) sometime in the spring.

“As part of the program, the team that wins first place sees their

school meal served across the entire district. It’s exciting for the students because they know on that day that what they created is being served to all students. In addition to that, Cooking Up Change provides the nutrition department at CPS the whole collection of student-designed recipes so they are able to pick and choose which recipes they want to implement and the district serves at least one Cooking Up Change recipe a month. These students are literally changing what’s on the menu in their school cafeteria which is pretty exciting,” said Porter.

CDC and FDA investigating multistate E.coli outbreak The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) infections linked to romaine lettuce.

The CDC reports that 32 people in 11 states have been infected with the same outbreak strain of E. coli. There are two individuals in Illinois who have tested positive for this same strain.

CDC is advising people not to eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until CDC learns more about the outbreak. The investigation is ongoing and CDC will update its advice as more information is available.

Consumers who have any type of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. This includes all types or uses of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, and bags and boxes of precut lettuce and salad mixes that contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar salad. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it and throw it away.

Symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection vary for each person, but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea

(often bloody), and vomiting. Some people may have a slight fever. Most people get better within 5 to 7 days. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening.

Most people who are infected will start feeling sick 3 to 4 days after eating or drinking something that contains the bacteria.

However, illnesses can start anywhere from 1 to 10 days after exposure. Contact your health care provider if you have diarrhea that lasts for more than three days or is accompanied by fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down and you pass very little urine.

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Announces Chicago Grant Recipients

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, an initiative of the Obama Foundation, recently announced the winners of its inaugural MBK Community Challenge Competition. Of the 19 organizations that were selected as winners, 5 were from Chicago and will become a unique cohort within the initiative.

“The My Brother’s Keeper Alliance is a federal policy initiative and also a local call to action in cities, municipalities, counties, communities, and tribal nations across the country to learn what communities can do together to support boys and men of color,” said Jaime Guzman, director of Local Programs with the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.

In April, My Brother’s Keeper Alliance launched the first Community Challenge Competition to identify and invest in community organizations that are making steady progress to substantially improve the lives of boys and young men of color, according to the Obama Foundation website.

It was through the Community Challenge Competition that BUILD, Inc., the Lawndale Christian Legal Center, New Life Centers of Chicagoland, and South Shore Drill Team & Performing Arts Ensemble were selected to receive Chicago Seed Grants and how Youth Guidance and Thrive Chicago together were named as a National Impact Community.

In total, more than $5 million in grant money was awarded to the 19 organizations that were named as winners of the Community Challenge Competition.

Community Challenge Competition. Shanika Brown, a street outreach worker for the organization, said that she sees this grant as a way to provide services for more young men and get them off the streets and out of the criminal justice system for good.

“I think that My Brother’s Keepers grant will help us a lot in the com-

munity as far as putting the guys to work and having them do something positive versus just hanging out on the street all day and catching cases,” said Brown. “I think the grant will help some of the guys in the neighborhood see that the legal center is not all focused on legal. We focus on all aspects like case management, social work, and basically, we are just www.thechicagocitizen.com

trying to help them in whatever way they would let us help them. This grant will allow us to help the guys and put them to work and provide resources for them that we couldn’t provide before.”

The five Chicago organizations that were recognized as winners of the Community Challenge Competition will become the first My

Brother’s Keeper Alliance Chicago Cohort.

“In Chicago, we are going to have a cohort within a cohort. It’s the start of what we hope will be a growing table of organizations across the city that are tackling this work, learning from each other, and shining a spotlight on other work that is happening in the city,” said Guzman.

New Research Shows Consumers Increasingly Adopting Tech-Driven Purchasing Habits Citi Retail Services (CRS) recently announced the results of its third-annual nationwide study on evolving consumer shopping trends during the holiday season. The survey of 1,000 U.S. adults found that this holiday season, in addition to rushing to the mall, consumers are increasingly powering up their computers and mobile devices or simply interacting with their virtual assistant. While nearly three-fourths (73%) still plan on visiting a brickand-mortar store to purchase holiday gifts, a sizable 57% additionally plan on turning to their computer to shop, 42% to their mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet, and 13% to their virtual assistant, such as Alexa or Siri, to facilitate their holiday shopping needs.

And while millennials are at the forefront of this shift in the holiday path to purchase, Gen Xers are right there with them. Sixty percent of millennials and 53% of Gen Xers plan on using their laptops or

computer for their holiday shopping this year, 55% of millennials plan on using a mobile device, followed by 48% of Gen Xers and when it comes to voice assistants, Gen Xers take the lead with 22% employing voice commands, surpassing millennials at 17%.

"What we're seeing is that technology is altogether reshaping the holiday shopping season," said Leslie McNamara, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Workforce Development, Citi Retail Services. "Consumers are turning to connected devices to purchase gifts in droves and for retailers, this means rethinking their marketing strategy to encompass a robust strategy – including voice technology – to reach consumers in their evolving channel of choice and ensure a seamless shopping experience."

And with smart speaker ownership poised to continue to increase dramatically (Adobe predicts that smart speaker ownership will rise to

nearly half (48%) of U.S. consumers after the holiday season from 32% in August), voice-driven shopping behavior is likely to rise right along with it, providing retailers with a year-round opportunity to seamlessly connect with consumers and drive brand loyalty.

Also, as consumers adopt new means to shop for the holidays, they continue to leverage innovative ways to extend their purchasing power. Eighty-four percent of consumers are planning to shop at a store where they are a rewards member, specifically so that they can accumulate discounts and/or rewards points, and 60% of rewards members have opted not to use their rewards on purchases throughout the year so they can allocate them toward a holiday gift.

Further, more than one-quarter of shoppers (26%) anticipate they will save an impressive $200 or more this holiday season, thanks to their rewards programs. And again,

millennials and Gen Xers lead the way with 33% and 28%, respectively, expecting to save $200 or more by leveraging rewards.

And with retailers continuing to see strong enrollment in rewards programs (Eight out of ten (83%) consumers are currently enrolled in at least one rewards program, with one in four (26%) belonging to five or more), there's an immense opportunity to engage consumers in these crucial moments. In addition, the CRS research showed that consumers are keenly aware of which rewards programs they are enrolled in, with nearly nine out of ten (88%) – and 95% of millennials – confirming they are more loyal

to stores where they are a rewards member.

Other key findings include: Here we Come a Gifting — and Returning Given the volume of gifts both received and given during the holiday season, returns are inevitable. Almost half (48%) of consumers admit to exchanging a gift and purchasing another item, either for themselves or for someone else.

But again, when it comes to returning holiday gifts, behavior is generational and therefore, evolving over time. While 74% and 76% of millennials and Gen Xers admitted to returning a holiday gift, only 59% of Boomers have done the same.

Illinois Lottery Reports Record-Breaking Sales for October Illinois Lottery officials recently announced that sales for October 2018 were the highest monthly sales in the department’s history at $345,128,919, up 9.9 percent from the previous record set in January 2016.

October sales were comprised of $163,651,671 and $181,477,248 for instant tickets and drawbased games, respectively, with $80,516,493 in sales resulting from the near world-record Mega Millions jackpot roll. The $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot was won Oct. 23 in South Carolina. It

was the second-highest jackpot in lottery history. The largest jackpot in lottery history was the $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot from January 2016, which contributed to the Illinois Lottery’s previous sales record month.

The Illinois Lottery’s October digital sales also were the highest in history, driven in part by the number of players visiting the website and mobile app for Mega Millions and Powerball tickets.

Online sales were $11,688,623 million in October, surpassing the former record by $5,562,759.

Rauner, Pritzker To Make Joint Appearance At Bicentennial Birthday Party Gov. Bruce Rauner and Governor-elect JB Pritzker will make a joint appearance at the state’s 200th Birthday Party on Dec. 3, the day in 1818 when Illinois became the nation’s 21st state.

Both men rallied around a unity theme in the aftermath of the recent election. “There is no better place to start uniting than at an event that celebrates the greatness of Illinois,” Rauner said.

“The milestone represented by our 2ooth birthday is especially important as we turn our focus to the future,” Rauner said. “The state possesses a legacy of invention, persistence and economic vitality. This is the time to reflect on those assets and come together to put them to work for the people of Illinois.”

“Just as Illinoisans of all backgrounds have united and pushed our state forward for 200 years, we will celebrate our bicentennial as one Illinois,” said Governor-elect JB Pritzker. “We are the land of Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama, home to the world’s leading companies and universities, an economic powerhouse of the Midwest and agriculture powerhouse of our country. Together, we will ring in our third century with hope and optimism and strive to build on the progress of the 200 years before us.”

The Bicentennial Commission also announced a change in venue for the official Bicentennial Birthday. The celebration is moving from the United Center to the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier.

The Birthday Party program will remain largely the same. People attending the affair will be treated to a star-studded presentation of things BORN, BUILT, and GROWN in Illinois.

The highlights include an original Gettysburg Address Rap – “All People are Created Equal” – by Miguel Cervantes (Hamilton, Chicago), performances by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Buddy Guy; a special acoustic performance by Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon; and a Championship Parade featuring star athletes marching with Chicago team championship trophies.

According to Stuart Layne, executive director of the Governor’s Office of the Bicentennial, the venue change makes it possible to produce a more intimate event for sponsors, partners and attendees. The change was necessitated in part by weaker than expected tickets sales during the month preceding the election.

“The Bicentennial celebration has been staged without the benefit of any state funding,” Layne said.

“This move means that we can stay on budget and still put on a memorable party for this landmark occasion.”

People who have purchased tickets for the United Center may use them for the party at Navy Pier or contact Ticketmaster for a refund prior to Dec. 2. Future ticket purchase opportunities will be announced as they become available.
