DESPITE STAGNANT ENROLLMENT, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE NEARLY $41 BILLION TO THE U.S. ECONOMY NAFSA: Association of International Educators announced new data recently that show that the more than one million international students at U.S. colleges and universities contributed nearly $41 billion to the U.S. economy and supported 458,290 jobs during the 2018-2019 academic year. This represents only a 0.6% increase in job support and creation and a 3.8% increase in dollars contributed to the economy from the previous academic year.

Further analysis showed that for every 7 international students, 3 U.S. jobs are created or supported by spending in the following sectors: higher education, accommodation, dining, retail, transportation, telecommunications and health insurance.

The growth rate of students choosing to study in the United States continues to decline while competitor countries experience double-digit growth (Canada up 16%; Australia up 15%). NAFSA estimates the continued decline in international student enrollment since fall 2016 has cost the U.S. economy $11.8 billion and more than 65,000 jobs.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ALLOCATES $19.7 MILLION TO HELP JURISDICTIONS REGISTER, TRACK SEX OFFENDERS AND PROTECT YOUNG ATHLETES The Office of Justice Programs’ Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) recently announced awards of nearly $15.8 million to help states, U.S. territories and tribal communities develop and improve their systems to register and track sex offenders. SMART also awarded $2.3 million to help protect participants in U.S.-Olympic and Paralympic athletic programs from abuse and $1.6 million to maintain the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website.

The awards will be used to help jurisdictions meet the requirements of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. Jurisdictions will develop and enhance their sex offender registration systems in order to better track and monitor sex offenders, reduce violent crime and improve public safety.

After temporarily closing its doors earlier this year for remodeling, the future of the Chatham Food Market appears bleak even though outside signage says it would reopen soon as a meat and produce store.

According to Isaac Reichman, a spokesman for the city’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Department, the Chatham Food Market has an active license to operate until October 2020, but management has indicated it may close the business for good.

“This summer, city investigators from the Building Department went there to check for any building code violations and found none but were told by management that it would likely close the store,” contends Reichman. “So it’s unclear right now what the owners plan to do with the business.”

Despite repeated attempts, Chatham Food Market management did not return phone calls, seeking comment.

And Winston McGill, chief of staff to Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th), whose ward includes the grocery store, did not return calls seeking comment either.

The once black-owned, full-service grocery store at 327 E. 79th St. donated items including meats to the public in July, but beyond that, no activity, such as construction, has taken place at the two-story, 4,000-square-foot store that was founded in 1983 by Leonard Harris and his wife Donna.

Pattilyn Beals, interim executive director of the Chatham Business Association, was unavailable for comment.

Longtime customers like Beverly Shaws, 69, said she had shopped at the store since moving to Chatham in 1990.

“I love shopping in my neighborhood and I loved the fact that it was black-owned,” said Shaws. “And even

after the store was sold and was no longer black-owned, I continued to shop there because the original staff remained and the new owners were nice and eventually became a part of the community too.”

But Chatham residents don’t have to travel far to find another full-service grocery store in the area. Located a mile away in West Chatham at 341 W. 79th St., is Discount Meats and Produce, a small, similar store with a butcher counter that sells fresh meats and vegetables and an assortment of grocery items.

“Yeah, it’s a full-service grocery store but it is not in the sixth ward where I live but over in the 17th Ward near Auburn Gresham,” said Hubert Alexander, 71, who has been shopping at the store since Chatham Food Market closed. “The prices are reasonable and it does have good customer service but I still rather spend my money at my own neighborhood store.”

Holiday Consumerism: Who Decides What “Nobody Really Needs?”

“Wasting resources, capital and income on stuff nobody really needs,” Charles Hugh Smith wrote in 2017, “is a monumental disaster on multiple fronts. Rather than establish incentives to conserve and invest wisely, our system glorifies waste and the destruction of income and capital, as if burning time, capital, resources and wealth on stuff nobody needs is strengthening the economy.”

I come across the “stuff nobody needs” argument frequently, from voices all across the political spectrum, for reasons ranging from economic to environmental to spiritual.

I also notice that in the featured portrait on Smith’s blog, he’s holding what appears to be a pretty sweet Gibson Les Paul electric guitar.

Does anyone “really need” an electric guitar?

Presumably Smith believes he needs one. Maybe even an authentic Les Paul. Maybe even more than one guitar (like the Fender Stratocaster or clone thereof pictured elsewhere on his site).

And who has the right to veto his judgment on the issue, so long as the “resources, capital and income” he’s “wasting” on it are his own?

I settled for an inexpensive Epiphone model of the Les Paul for my own, perhaps larger than justifiable, guitar collection (my wife frowned at the price tag of the genuine Gibson).

I wouldn’t dream of claiming that my “need” for a Les Paul is more urgent than, say, a starving child’s need for a hot meal or a homeless person’s need for shelter.

On the other hand, my purchase of that guitar helped create paychecks that

put meals in bellies and roofs over heads.

Economic demands are mutually self-fulfilling. Your purchase of a cup of fancy coffee puts caffeine in your bloodstream and money in the pockets of those who brought it to you — money they can spend fulfilling THEIR needs.

The same thing goes for planes, trains, automobiles, electric guitars, and the latest slice-it, dice-it, cook-it contraptions you (yes, I know it’s you) buy after watching those cheesy infomercials.

Yes, large-scale consumer economies produce negative “externalities” such as environmental damage.

Yes, those externalities are bad things which a more just economic system would build back into prices so as to discourage “over-consumption” and/or encourage more efficient and less damaging production techniques.

Current economic systems, including all state regulatory schemes, be they called “capitalist,” or “socialist,” or some hybrid, tend to subsidize those externalities. You pay for them with your taxes, whether you actually buy the subsidized goods or not.

That being the case, there’s no reason to feel guilty for buying this year’s “frivolous” holiday gifts that “nobody really needs.” Not because holiday shopping “strengthens the economy,” but because you want to give them and the recipients want to get them.

Pritzker Administration Partners with Illinois Primary Health Association on 2020 Census Outreach Efforts Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) recently announced the Illinois Primary Health Association will serve the Northwest region of Illinois for the state’s 2020 census effort, including JoDaviess, Carroll, Whiteside, Lee, LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam, Henry, Mercer and Rock Island Counties.

The organization joins over 20 organizations across the state who have been awarded grants to maximize Illinois’ success in the 2020 Census. These grants, totaling over $20 million dollars, represent the largest census investment made by

any state in 2019.

The organizations serving as Regional Intermediaries for the 2020 Census Grant Program are identifying other local organizations to award additional grants within their regions. This ensures funding directly supports organizations

who are best equipped to connect with Illinoisans on the front lines of urban, rural and other hard-toreach communities.

“Ensuring that every community across the state has the opportunity to let their voices be heard is a top priority for my administration,”

said Governor JB Pritzker. “By partnering with local organizations who have a strong presence in their communities, we can make sure Illinoisans in hard to reach areas aren’t left behind.”

In June, Governor JB Pritzker signed Executive Order 19-10 to secure an accurate census count in all communities across Illinois.

The Order established a new Census Office, led by Census Directors Marishonta Wilkerson and Oswaldo Alvarez and a bipartisan, bicameral Census Advisory Panel.

“The kind of collaboration shown through this process is groundbreaking,” said IDHS

Secretary Grace Hou. “We’re encouraging participation and engagement from the front lines, and also bringing strong support from IDHS, the Census Advisory Panel, and many community partners.”

IDHS and the Census Office have also joined with the Illinois State Board of Education to host a Census Summit for educators, childhood providers and any other interested organizations to learn about how they can get involved in promoting the census in classrooms and child care settings across Illinois.

Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, content, and professional development for K-12 classrooms nationwide, has announced the creation of a STEM Careers Coalition.

Officials said the initiative will help educators develop a pipeline of students who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields.

It will also provide no-cost resources to students and educators, including virtual field trips, digital instructional assets, and career exploration videos.

Discovery Education officials said these resources would help students build foundational STEM knowledge and develop critical thinking 21st-century skills for college and career success.

“Last week we launched a critical initiative about future careers, a conduit through which students can see the work of the future, and a set of resources that bring relevancy to learning and broaden our understanding of and engagement with STEM,” stated Marla Wilson, the senior director of the Coalition.

“Solutions to local, national, or global challenges are best addressed with a collaborative community of companies, industries, and non-profits,” Wilson added.

“This world of work is most effective when the individuals contributing to and leading this evolution represent the diversity of our communities and the richness of multiple perspectives. We are excited to work with our anchor partners to intention-

ally focus on girls and students of color, as we move to provide equity and access and de-mystify STEM,” she stated.

The initiative launched at the Carnegie Institution for Science, where former astronaut Leland Melvin joined a panel discussion that included leaders in education, industry, and government.

Members of the newly formed Coalition includes key anchor partners like the American Petroleum Institute (API), Chevron, The Manufacturing Institute, Boeing, Microsoft, and Best Buy. Each of those companies has provided initial seed funding and support to power the initiative’s launch.

The initiative would take place in a phased approach that includes a pilot year.

The approach should help measure the program’s effectiveness and strategically developed ways to scale, Discovery officials stated.

The initiative will scale up over five years, and it’s expected to reach 10 million students by 2025 with support from various corporate partners.

Among the components of the STEM Coalition’s work is a direct investment in schools by providing K-12 STEM career resources, STEM Connect access, and professional development for under-resourced schools.

The Coalition will implement employee engagement through mobilizing the current STEM workforce at scale to inspire and connect with future employees through engaging classroom experiences.

Coalition members will also underwrite Discovery Education STEM Connect in local communities identified by the partners.

Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges for Engineering, STEM Connect is an interdisciplinary resource that enhances the core curriculum.

It helps students build valuable problem-solving skills as they develop and apply solutions to critical real-world challenges.

Rooted in authoritative research, users become part of a global student laboratory to share data and collaborate with others around the world, officials stated.

“We really see ourselves as problem solvers, and we’re trying to tackle the world’s greatest energy challenges. Meeting the growing demand for energy around the world and producing building blocks that we need to manufacture everyday products and to fuel the economy,” stated Rebecca Winkel, an economic advisor of regulatory and economic policy at API. “It’s a big job, and we’re trying to do that smarter, safer, better, and more effectively every day. We know that to continue this work, we need a talented workforce. And we have quite a large workforce gap that we see coming,” Winkel stated.

She continued: “There will be millions of job opportunities that we will need to fill in this industry over the next two decades.

And so, to be able to continue solving the problems and facing the challenges that we face, we need to make sure that the next generation is as prepared as possible.

Investing in education at the earliest stages is necessary to make this happen.

“Diversity, equity and access are key. We want to make sure that we are providing resources to schools that are traditionally

under-resourced and making sure that girls and students of color, in particular, can have access to it.”

In addition to Melvin, guests at the launch included those identified as individuals invested in preparing the next generation of solution seekers and leveraging the power of technology to close the awareness gap.

“The STEM Careers Coalition will connect classrooms to careers at an unprecedented scale, said Lori McFarling, president of corporate partnerships, Discovery Education.

“We believe that through direct investment in schools with a focus on equity of access, engagement of Coalition member employees, and exposure to digitally immersive STEM career experiences, more students will have the opportunity to envision their future in STEM and emerge as the STEM leaders of the future to fill the ever-growing careers pipeline,” McFarling stated.

Over time, the efforts of the Coalition are expected to result in increased awareness as it relates to STEM and STEM careers, stated Wilson, the senior director of the Coalition.

“Through the generosity of the Coalition partners, students will have access to an array of STEM-focused resources, such as virtual field trips, digital instructional assets, career exploration videos, and more,” Wilson stated.

MORE THAN 900 VENDORS AND ATTENDEES TAKE PART IN WOMEN'S SMALL BUSINESS EXPO City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin's first Women's Small Business and Entrepreneur Expo was a huge success over the weekend. The UIC Dorin Forum was packed with small business vendors, banks, government experts on certification, women leaders from corporate boardrooms, and entrepreneurs in the making. During her welcome address, City Treasurer Melissa ConyearsErvin told the crowd, "Women make up 50% of the population, but only own a fraction of the country's businesses. Not so great, huh? Let's make this a great day.

Starting now, today, let's change those stats. Let's change the narrative!"

Energized, the attendees packed the vendors' marketplace. The businesses were diverse. They ranged from insurance companies, to craft jewelry makers, to an entrepreneur with a draft for a cell phone prototype. Conyears-Ervin's vision for the free expo was to inform and educate women small business owners and entrepreneurs about important resources and programs available to help create, grow and sustain their business.

In addition to the vendors' marketplace, there were 12 break-out sessions focusing on where to get business financing, how to land government contracts, and more. "I couldn't wait to come," said Shanara Carter of Bronzeville.

"This is one stop shopping. I need all the help I can get to grow my business."

Women business owners are less likely to apply for, or receive, funding from financial institutions to get the assistance needed to grow their businesses.

"Where's the procurement panel?" many attendees asked. It's a fact that despite the number of companies that are qualified as women owned business enterprises, very few of these businesses are awarded significant government contracts. The City of Chicago Department of Procurement conducted a panel and there was standing room only.

The other break-out sessions were also well attended and their subjects ranged from Finding City Funding, How to Start a Business, Using Social Media to Brand and more.

The Women's Small Business Expo distinguished itself from other expos by providing for free, a vendors marketplace, break-out sessions, a leadership panel and a fireside chat. "Finding financing to start a business is tough. Women get a fragment of what men get to start their businesses and that needs to change," said Marianne Markowitz. She is the CEO and one of the founders of the Women's Bank of Chicago.

The financial institution is the first bank in the United States to be founded and run by women. Markowitz was a respected member of the Obama Administration. She spoke candidly about wanting to close the opportunity gap when it comes to women and small businesses, as well as her White House years.

City Treasurer Conyears-Ervin visited vendors in the marketplace, and took photos as the six hour event began to wind down. "I hope you have this again next year," an attendee said as she pulled out her camera and asked to take a selfie.

"Absolutely!" Conyears-Ervin promised.

"And it will be bigger and better!"

Red Clay Dance Presents Winter Sharecase and Holiday Party Red Clay Dance Company (RCDC) engages its community by hosting a Winter Sharecase and Holiday Party Saturday, December 14 at 2 p.m. at Fuller Park Auditorium, 331 W. 45th Place, Chicago.

The performance features students of Red Clay Dance Academy, the official school of Red Clay Dance Company, and Red Clay Dance’s Youth Ensemble. The Academy is committed to offering world-class dance training for youth, teens, and adults. Classes are open to students aged one and older from beginners to advanced dancers.

The gathering is also the culmination of an online series of commentaries this fall, entitled Words to Live By. Each post has focused on a different word that has importance and meaning for the RCDC community: Artivism, Glocal, and Community Engagement. The commentaries are available at redclaydance. wordpress.com. There will be a brief discussion on the series after the performance, followed by a holiday celebration with music, refreshments, games, and prizes.

National Museum of African American Music Assembles All-Star Band of Creative Agencies to Launch Grand Opening When the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) officially opens its doors in the summer of 2020, it will be a firstof-its-kind cultural institution that celebrates the tradition of the people behind Black music and the music’s significant impact on the soundtrack of American society.

Located in the heart of Downtown Nashville, Tennessee, the museum will be the newest crown jewel to Nashville’s royal musical landscape. In support of its pending grand opening, NMAAM leadership has tapped into an all-star “band” of creative agencies to lead the marketing communications push and drive interest and excitement with future guests.

Now that the museum space at Fifth + Broadway has been secured, gallery and artifact layouts have been completed and construction is underway, NMAAM’s team of creative agencies, led by agency of record Authentique Agency, will deliver on the overall brand strategy, marketing execution, public relations, advertising, experiential marketing and special events.
