NEWS briefly SLAUGHTER ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO FOLLOW IDPH COVID-19 MITIGATION GUIDANCE CHICAGO – To help prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases during the upcoming holiday season, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is reminding local residents to follow the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) most recent guidelines on how to safely celebrate this holiday amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While we have made tremendous progress in getting people vaccinated and reducing the number of new cases, we cannot afford to lower our guard now,” said Slaughter. “I know that this has been a frustrating time for many, but we must continue to do what we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. I’ll be following the recommendations of our health experts, and I encourage others to do the same.”

IDPH recently released updated guidance for families and individuals to celebrate safely this holiday season during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Illinoisans are encouraged to keep gatherings small and ensure adequate ventilation indoors, while unvaccinated travelers are encouraged to get tested before and after traveling. Travelers are encouraged to use private vehicles, and masks are required when traveling on mass transit and public transit. GOV. PRITZKER SIGNS THE REIMAGINING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN ILLINOIS ACT ROCKFORD— Building on Illinois’ role as a leading state in the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing industry, Governor JB Pritzker today signed the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act into law, incentivizing EV production across Illinois. The new incentives benefit the state’s entire EV ecosystem, by helping to build facilities, train Illinois graduates, and create thousands of jobs. This is a major step towards one of the administration’s bold benchmarks: putting one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.

Following the state’s historic Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, the Reimagining Electric Vehicles in Illinois Act (REV) sets out to make Illinois a hub for EV and auto battery production. More specifically, the legislation includes tax credits for income tax withholding, training costs, tax exemptions, and investment credits, as well as allowing local jurisdictions to abate property taxes for EV projects. EVs include vehicles exclusively powered by electricity and include electric cars and motorcycles.

Crucially, the legislation prioritizes underserved communities and communities impacted by energy transitions.

The credits range from 75 percent to 100 percent of income tax withheld for creating new jobs or 25 percent to 50 percent for retained employees, depending on various factors such as company location.

Additional enhancements include a 20 percent price preference for EVs built in Illinois for state procurements and the creation of an EV Permitting Task Force to ensure permits for EV projects are streamlined.

The legislation not only helps promote new business in Illinois but creates pathways to opportunity for historically underserved communities. REV incentivizes employers to locate new facilities in communities that have been historically left out of investment and prioritizes equity through vendor diversity reporting, diverse hiring plans, and workforce diversity reporting.

John Scott has been named to the board of the 100 Club of Illinois. He intends to use his appointment to be a bridge between the organization and the community.

Scott spent more than a decade with the Chicago Public Schools, working in community engagement and governmental affairs, as well as the Chicago Board of Education. He worked directly with president of the Board and its members.

Those years of experience with the Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Board of Education led Scott into the position he serves in now with Chancelight Behavioral Health, Therapy and Education as the vice president of business development and government relations.

Chancelight specializes in special education, working with school districts in special education, and alternative education, working with at-risk youth.

Scott works with legislators and school board members, to engage with them to answer questions. Scott comes from a political background and worked on various campaigns throughout Chicago.

Scott also worked with the 47th Ward

Democratic Organization with Paul Rosenfeld. Scott said Rosenfeld was the first person to notice his talents to work with community and elected officials.

Scott worked on several gubernatorial campaigns.

Scott was asked to be on the 100 Club of Illinois Board by the organization’s Treasurer. They had a relationship since they met at an event while Scott still worked for the Chicago Public Schools. He knew he could call on 100 Club of Chicago when there was a need. The 100 Club of Illinois provides resources to the families of fallen first responders.

Scott was considered a good asset to the board because he could be a bridge to more communities in Chicago. The organization wanted to do more outreach.

Scott saw a need for an African American voice on the board and wanted to be the one to provide it.

“We’re always interacting with the police officers’ families. That’s what we’re there for. We’re there to financially help the family in that time of need and make sure their children are educated. We have had children from grammar school to those finishing up medical school, the 100 Club has paid their tuition,” he said.

Scott wants to bring awareness of the resources that the 100 Club provides. He also wants those resources to be extended into the community.

Caitlyn Brennan, CEO of the 100 Club of Illinois’ Board of Directors, said Scott was chosen because he has a lot of talent and experience in the access to education space, as well as community development. The 100 Club is at a point in its 55-year history where it has expanded to a statewide organization, building a lot more community partnerships. Half of the program finances from the organization deal with higher education, Scott’s background in education can help some of the students it serves.

There are 35 members of the 100 Club of Illinois Board, who span from professional to personal ties to the club, as well as survivors.

“I think he fits in very well. There are a couple other members of the Board who have an education focus and some community development focus. With that group, I think those talents mesh very well,” she said. “We’re excited to have him on Board and we’re excited to have a representative from a community that will bring more access to our 100 Club Scholars.”

Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago Appoints New Curatorial Leadership The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) announces the appointment of two new leaders to their curatorial team, René Morales as the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, and Jamillah James as Manilow Senior Curator. Both Morales and James will assume their roles at the MCA in January 2022.

“We are building a curatorial team for the MCA’s next chapter, one that is committed to telling an inclusive art history, engaging with our community, and expanding the breadth and diversity of experience on the team. Both René and Jamillah are passionate about investing in Chicago’s community of artists, cultural stakeholders, and audiences, and their collaborative practice and open and authentic approach will be transformative for the MCA,” states MCA Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn.

Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and raised in Miami, René Morales is an award-winning curator and significant presence in Miami’s art scene. He brings over 25 years of curatorial experience, previously serving as Director of Curatorial Affairs and Chief Curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

At PAMM, his work has focused on exhibitions and projects that reflect Miami’s diverse community and pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas. His current project, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy, the first comprehensive career survey of the multidisciplinary artist known for works that apply strong aesthetic and conceptual strategies to questions of race, class and gender identity, is originating at PAMM and will travel to the MCA in 2023.

In his role as Alsdorf Chief Curator, Morales will lead the MCA’s artistic division, reconsidering the MCA’s exhibition, performance, program, learning, and

collection plans through a transcultural, inclusive and integrative lens. His emphasis on collaboration and the development of curatorial talent will strengthen the impact of the museum’s curatorial team which hails from across the globe, including the new voices of Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, Carla Acevedo Yates; Curator, Performance and Public Practice, Tara Aisha Willis; Pamela Alper Associate Curator, Bana Kattan; Assistant Curator, Jadine Collingwood; and Assistant Curator, Performance and Public Practice, Gibran Villalobos.

James regularly lectures on contemporary art, curating, and professional development for emerging artists and is a visiting critic in the graduate department at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.

POLITICAL Affairs Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas opens satellite office at Saint Sabina Church to help preserve homeownership Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has opened a satellite office at Saint Sabina Church as part of her Black Houses Matter homeownership preservation program.

Partnering with Father Michael Pfleger, Saint Sabina’s senior pastor, Pappas’ goal is to get properties off the Tax Sale list by helping homeowners search for $72 million in available property tax refunds going back 20 years and $43 million in missing exemptions going back four years.

“This is a great partnership with Saint Sabina and Father Pfleger, who is committed to improving the well-being of the community,” Pappas said. “This satellite office will play a key role in the expanded outreach efforts of my office into majority-Black communities and their places of worship. Since Pappas started Black Houses Matter in March 2020, the Treasurer’s Office has returned almost 54,000 overpayments and missing exemptions totaling $87 million to the Black community.

Partnering to help create opportunities Last year, Bank of America committed $1.25 billion over five years to advance racial equality and economic opportunity. To date, we’ve directly funded or invested one-third of this amount on top of long-standing efforts to make an impact in our communities and address society’s greatest challenges.

Here are some of the ways we’re working to make a difference: • Investing $300 million in 100 minority-owned and minority-led equity funds, including Supply Change Capital. This will help diverse entrepreneurs and small business owners create more jobs, financial stability and growth.

• Investing $36 million in 21 Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) banks, such as First Women’s Bank, that support minority-owned businesses. This is in addition to approximately $100 million in deposits to MDIs and our existing CDFI portfolio of more than $2 billion, which helps build pathways to economic vitality in local markets.

• Providing funding and support through innovative programs and partnerships with community colleges, universities and nonprofits, including Harold Washington College, City Colleges of Chicago, that offer training and credentialing programs connecting more people to high-wage, in-demand careers.

We’re doing this work in collaboration with community partners, business leaders, experts and academics across the public and private sectors to ensure that our investments are directed where they’re needed most. Together, we can help drive sustainable progress in Chicago.
