NIOSH PARTNERS WITH AMERICA ACHIEVES TO PREPARE THE FUTURE WORKFORCE WITH COMPETENCIES FOR SAFE AND HEALTHY EMPLOYMENT The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with America Achieves, a not-for-profit organization focusing on education-to-workforce issues, to promote young worker safety and health.

Through this collaboration, NIOSH and America Achieves have included materials that address foundational, workplace safety and health competencies related to hazard identification and hazard control strategies in a recently released version of Quest for Success, a new, innovative career exploration course for high school students to learn about and prepare for jobs of the future.

DURBIN, DUCKWORTH, BUSTOS ANNOUNCE MULTI-YEAR EXTENSION FOR QUAD CITIES TO CHICAGO AMTRAK RAIL PROJECT FUNDING US. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17), recently announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued an extension for $177 million in Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) funding for the Amtrak route between Chicago and Moline until December 31, 2024. In June, the members sent a letter to DOT Secretary Elaine Chao that urged DOT to extend the deadline for Illinois to use the $177 million in FRA funding that was secured in Fiscal Year 2010. After being encouraged by negotiations regarding the scope of the project, the members sent another letter in October and again urged for an extension of this crucial funding.

“Today’s announcement gives local communities in the Quad Cities the certainty needed to plan ahead for the new passenger rail service. After years of unnecessary delay, Senator Duckworth, Representative Bustos, and I have pushed hard to make Amtrak in the Quad Cities a reality. The future of this critical Illinois transportation project looks bright,” Durbin said.

Chicago State University Opens Food Pantry For Students, Staff, Faculty And Alumni Continued from page 1

Chicago State University recently celebrated the opening of its new food pantry on campus which was established to assist students, faculty, staff, and alumni overcome food insecurities. The food pantry is a part of the university’s Student Affairs division and is partnered with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The Chicago State University food pantry is open once a week on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is located in the Cordell Reed Student Union Building.

“We supply fresh produce, meats, dairy, toiletries, canned goods, perishables, and non-perishables. We have all of those available for students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

They are allowed to come twice a month to receive these items and there’s no charge or no cost to anyone and it is primarily run by student workers,” said Sydnie Monegan, Women’s Resource Center coordinator at Chicago State University.

This is the first semester that the food pantry has been open and it was created, in part, as a result of the university finding that 67% of its students identified as low-income on their FAFSA (Federal Aid Financial Student Assistance) application in 2018, according to information provided by Chicago State University.

“Food insecurity is an issue of equity and affects many students around the nation,” said Zaldwaynaka Scott, president of Chicago State University. “We don’t want our students to choose between buying books and food, we want to keep them focused on their studies and eliminate barriers to degree completion.”

Going along with the findings that more than half of the students at Chicago State University are living in a low-income household, Monegan said that the Women’s Resource Center helped about 70 students who were struggling with housing and food insecurities in 2018.

“Housing and food insecurity is a large barrier for the students. It’s very hard to

focus on studies or anything else if you’re concerned about where your next meal is going to come from,” said Monegan. “We have a large base of our students who are going through several issues that result in hunger.”

Since opening, Monegan said there have been anywhere from 70 to 80 people a week coming to the food pantry and that it has proved to not only be a valuable resource for students but also for faculty and staff at Chicago State University.

“What I’ve learned is that the staff is just as appreciative. We often think that those of us with full-time jobs at universities, which are well-paying jobs, don’t have struggles, but we have had staff say that their family is having some medical or financial issues and that the food pantry is a relief to them,” said Monegan.

Former LAPD Chief Chosen As Interim Superintendent After City’s Top Cop Announces His Retirement

The unexpected announcement last week by Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson that he will retire next month has led to the selection of an interim police superintendent when the city’s top cop retires.

Johnson will officially retire on Dec. 31 and will be temporarily replaced by former Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck until a permanent superintendent is hired, which Mayor Lori Lightfoot said would happen in the next three to six months.

“After 31 years, it’s time for someone else to pin these four stars to their shoulders. These stars can sometimes feel like carrying the weight of the world,” Johnson said during a Nov. 7 news conference at Police Headquarters with his family by his side. “This job has taken a toll on me. It has taken a toll on my health and my family but my integrity remains intact.”

consider. At the time, Lightfoot, an attorney, was president of the police board.

Lightfoot, who joined Johnson at the news conference said, “The city will always have a debt owed to you for everything you did to keep our streets safe and make our quality of life better,” Lightfoot told Johnson as he started crying. “Chicago is better because Superintendent Johnson called this city his home and dedicated his career to serving it.”

at a Friday news conference, echoed Lightfoot’s sentiments about the superintendent.

“Certainly Superintendent Johnson is owed much credit for crime reduction and improving the overall moral of the police department,” said Taliaferro. “His imprint on this city will forever be remembered.”

Johnson, a former resident of the Cabrini Green public housing complex on the Near North Side, began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1988 as a beat officer. He was appointed the commander of the 6th District

in 2008, and chief of patrol in 2012 where he stayed until his appointment as superintendent.

“CPD needs strong leadership and I want the next top cop to continue making improvements to public safety and in a department I love,” said Johnson. “Chicago is a safer place than when I was appointed Superintendent in April 2016. People in every neighborhood and on every block trusted me with their safety. I will never forget this job or those that have helped me succeed,” he said.

Young children have intuitions of great teachers, Stanford researchers find Human are incredible learners, in part because they are also accomplished teachers.

Even at a very early age, people are adept at instructing others. But while there has been a lot of research into how people teach, there has been much less research on how they decide what to teach in the first place – a critical piece of the educational puzzle.

Now, new research from Stanford scientists reveals that even young children consider what their students will find most useful or rewarding when deciding what to teach. A team led by Hyowon Gweon, assistant professor of psychology, showed that 5- to 7-year-olds decide to teach things that will not only be rewarding but also challenging for their students to learn on their own, maximizing what the student gets out of the interaction.

“People have to be choosy about what they teach, because it is impossible to teach everything; our results suggest that even young children are able to reason about the expected reward and the cost of learning from the learner’s perspective to determine what is best to teach,” Gweon said. The study, published Oct. 14 in Nature Human Behavior, shows that even young children know what is useful to the learner.

To find out how children think about what to teach, the researchers had children explore two toys on their own before deciding which toy to teach someone else to use. The toys differed in how interesting they were to play, how hard they were to learn, or both.

Prior to the experiment, Gweon’s team had worked out that toys consisting of an orb that emitted different light colors were generally more interesting to kids than toys that played music. They also knew that toys became harder to learn depending on the number of buttons and the combination involved in making the toy work. Using this information, the team developed a computational model that predicts what children might choose if they understood how to maximize the learner’s benefit.

the experimenter told children that a friend would need help learning to play with the toys later. The experimenter then asked children which toy they wanted to teach someone to use.

Across six different conditions, the researchers found that children’s decisions about which toy to teach minimized the difficulty of learning while maximizing the fun of the toy, consistent with the computational model.

“Children prioritized to teach both the harder toy and the cooler toy,” said doctoral student Sophie Bridgers, lead author of the study.

“This shows that children not only think about what is fun for others to learn, but also what is challenging.” Julian Jara-Ettinger, assistant professor of psychology at Yale University, was also a co-author on the study.

Two of the older participants actually chose

When the experimenters asked them why they made this decision, the children said they wanted to give the learner the chance to figure out a challenging problem.

In other words, they knew that discovering

something costly could be rewarding, “which is an intuition that great teachers have, but exactly when we perceive the cost of learning as a negative or a positive is something we cannot fully explain yet,” Gweon said.

The development of such intuitions very early on might explain why humans have always been incredible learners, able to adapt to their environment. “The content of what is helpful to teach others has changed over time, but the key factors that determine what is helpful are the same,” Gweon said. “If I can only teach you one thing, I want it to be something useful; that is, something that brings you reward and saves you from trouble.”

The work was funded by the John Templeton Foundation, a James S. McDonnell Scholar Award and the National Science Foundation.

Pritzker Administration Announces Available Funding for Trauma Recovery Centers Statewide Governor Pritzker and the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority recently announced an upcoming grant program to support trauma recovery centers (TRCs) across the state. Research indicates crime victims from underserved communities face unique societal and cultural barriers to seeking help.

Community-based, hospital-supported comprehensive trauma recovery centers are equipped to provide much-needed services to

these populations.

Approximately $2.8 million in state funding will be made available to support TRCs through a notice of funding opportunity to be released later this fall. Hospital administrators and community organizations who work in partnership with hospitals are urged to complete the pre-qualifiers necessary to apply. Grants awarded must be spent by June 30, 2020.

“Trauma Recover Centers have the ability to provide essential services to

victims from underserved, marginalized communities who are often hesitant to seek help,” said Acting Executive Director Jason Stamps.

“We urge hospital administrators and community organizations to take advantage of available funding to expand the reach of their services.”

Fight to Fame Brings on Roy Jones Jr. as an Ambassador

Roy Jones Jr. Joins Fight to Fame

Fight to Fame, an entertainment platform with the aim to create new movie stars from the fighting industry recently announced that Roy Jones Jr. has joined fellow world class fighters Chris Van Heerden, Rigan Machado, and Prince Badi Ajamu as one of Fight to Fame’s ambassadors. The ambassadors are expected to guide the new blockchain technology company in the right direction while drumming up support from upcoming fighters.

Fight to Fame’s global boxing ambassador, Roy Jones Jr., is one of the success stories in the boxing space. Jones is a former professional boxer who has also worked as an actor, boxing trainer, boxing commentator, and rapper.

Roy Jones Jr. was born in the United States in 1969 and comes from a family of boxers. His father, Roy Jones Sr., was a middleweight boxer who received a Bronze Star for valor for rescuing a fellow soldier in the Vietnam War. As an amateur boxer, Roy Jones Jr. won a number of accolades including the 1984 United States National Junior Olympics, the US 1986 National Golden Gloves, and the US National Golden Gloves in 1987. He completed his amateur career with an impressive 121-13 record, comparable to other boxing greats such as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya, and Pernell Whitaker.

He enjoys being the only boxing champion to have held seven golden belts including the IBA, IBF, IBO, NBA, WBA, WBC, and WBF titles.

Roy Jones Jr. was named Fighter of the Decade for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America while

the Ring Magazine named him the Fighter of the Year in 1994. He won the Best Boxer ESPY Award on three occasions (1996, 2000, and 2003).

At his best, Jones Jr. was known for his great hand speed, movement, athleticism, and reflexes. He won 12 unified light heavyweight title bouts, which by 2018, stood as a record for the most wins in the fighting industry.

Jobs Report: Employment Growth Stronger Than Expected The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 128,000 in October. According to a press release from The Conference Board, this is a stronger than expected gain given the negative impact from the GM strike, which probably lowered overall employment by more than 50,000. The numbers for August and September were significantly revised up.

The Board added that the main message from the recent report is that the current trend in employment growth is higher than expected and is probably in the 150,000-200,000 range, also stating that with such solid employment growth, consumer spending is likely to remain strong into the holiday season and keep the US economy growing despite cautious spending by businesses.
