NEWS briefly REGGIO “THE HOOFER” MCLAUGHLIN AWARDED 2021 NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP Chicago’s own Reginald “Reggio the Hoofer” McLaughlin, who has brought his distinctive style of “hoofing” to theaters, classrooms, community centers, and tap festivals throughout the U.S., has received the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts: a 2021 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

McLaughlin is the only Midwest artist and the only dancer among the nine 2021 honorees.

The NEA National Heritage Fellowship recognizes the recipients’ artistic excellence and supports their continuing contributions to our nation’s traditional arts heritage. Each of the nine recipients will be featured in a film debuting on Nov. 17, on arts.gov. Upon learning he was a 2021 recipient, McLaughlin shared his motto, “If you are true to your art form, it will be true to you.”

Dance artist and teacher Sarah Galle, McLaughlin’s colleague, commented, “Reggio’s passion for tap dancing is matched only by his passion for sharing the roots of the art form with people all over the world. Whether he’s performing or teaching, he makes sure you aren’t just seeing or learning the steps. He wants you to know what’s behind it because that’s when the dancing comes from the heart. Reggio is as much a historian as he is an artist, and that is exactly what makes him so deserving to be recognized as a National Heritage Fellow.”

A master of tap dance, McLaughlin honed his distinctive “hoofing” style of dancing in the Chicago subways before advancing to the worldwide stage. He preserves the tradition of tap dance through educational programs that continue to energize the art form. For 27 years, McLaughlin has taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music, which honored him with its Distinguished Teaching Artist Award in 2015 and named a dance studio in his honor in 2020.

McLaughlin is working on a music CD and has an autobiography, Reggio McLaughlin: Tap Dance of Life, available at the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Different Strummer Music Store and Amazon. He also produced two dance instructional videos, appeared in five documentaries, and is currently working on a one-man show.

CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH ADMINISTERS COVID-19 VACCINATIONS AT LARRY’S BARBER COLLEGE The City of Chicago hosted a special COVID-19 vaccination event at Larry’s Barber College Community Health Day on September 25th as part of the Vax and Relax series. The Vax and Relax initiative offers free haircuts as well as a $50 gift card for each dose of the Pfizer vaccine received as incentives to encourage teens and young adults to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Two dozen Chicagoans attended the special event on Saturday to receive their COVID-19 vaccines in an effort to protect themselves, their families, and communities.

COVID-19 vaccines are widely available at pharmacies, health care facilities, and through special events across the city at no cost to the public. Through CDPH’s Protect Chicago At Home program, anyone 12 and over can receive a vaccination in their home. No insurance or government ID is required to receive a free COVID-19 vaccination anywhere. A New Development Project At The Former Independence Bank Site Continued from page 1

The former site of Independence Bank, located at 7936 S. Cottage Grove Ave., will be renovated to house the Gift of Hope community outreach and operations. It will also house a healthcare and skills training program through Malcolm X College.

The Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Network purchased the building in 2019. Independence Bank was the nation’s largest Blackowned bank. The site was the former home of Shore Bank and Urban Partnership Bank.

The Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Network has served Illinois and Northwest Indiana for 35 years. They have worked with hospitals, families, partners, and community leaders to facilitate organ and tissue donations.

The 48,000 square foot building will include a new allied healthcare training program for recent high school graduates and second career seekers. Programs such as Community Health Workers, Medical Assistant, Personal Fitness trainers and Emergency Medical Technicians certificate programming. Also, they will offer general education and continuing education courses. The building will also house the Gift of Hope business offices, backup call center and community outreach; and ‘Movement’, which is an entrepreneurial training and support program for teens, supported by the Chicago’s Third Horizon Strategies.

The initial Construction on the building was set to begin on Oct. 1. It is scheduled

to be completed in the Fall of 2022. The renovation is set to cost $10.9 million.

Dr. Harry Wilkins, president, and the CEO of Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Network, spoke about the transformation it will bring to the Chatham neighborhood. Wilkins talked about growing up in Chatham and how he opened his first bank account at Independence Bank. The Gift of Hope purchased the building in 2019 as a location for the backup call center and a Chicago base.

“The vision that this building could become even more and produce an even greater impact for Chatham began with three people at the Gift of Hope,” Wilkins said. He named Jack Lynch, Marion Schuck and Ross Raspopovich. “Those three, over the past two years, have enlisted partners who have shared our vision for this site.”

The programs to be offered by Malcolm X College will enable students that qualify for careers in the healthcare industry that offer livable wages.

“This clinic will help all members of this community access much needed quality physical therapy in their own neighborhood,” said David Sanders, president of Malcolm X College. “We’re doing this now because the demand for these careers are skyrocketing and we must train individuals from the community to service the community and expand access to confidence in and the quality of healthcare overall.”

Illinois State Representative Marcus Evans said that planning and purposeful thought and meeting must happen for things to

come together. He credited the 8th Ward Alderman Michelle Harris and the 6th Ward Alderman Roderick Sawyer with coming together and having a plan for this building.

“It was emotional for me, because I’m tired of vacant buildings. I saw the work Alderman Michelle Harris and Alderman Sawyer were doing, the planning and purposeful meetings. So, of course I advocated very very hard to get those State dollars, along with my other colleagues to make this building become a reality,” Evans said.

Illinois State Senator Mattie Hunter’s relationship with the Gift of Hope goes back 19 years when she was first in the legislature. She began working with the Gift of Hope to pass the organ donor legislation.

“Today is so important because all of these different entities are coming together to expand the vision for the Gift of Hope.

They’re bringing in the education and the training, they’re bringing skills to this community,” she said.

The goal of the partnership between Gift of Hope and Malcolm X College is to save lives and educate residents so they can take better care of themselves, with proper nutrition and proper healthcare, as well as address the inequities in healthcare.

“We decided to name this the Miracle Mile. You know we have the Magnificent Mile downtown, but this is actually the Miracle Mile, because we’re going to change lives. We’re going to change the trajectory of this community,” said Marion Shuck, vice president of governmental relations and external affairs.

Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire The Richard H. Driehaus Museum’s Up from the Ashes Walking Tour Highlights the Nickerson Mansion PRNewswire -- The Richard H. Driehaus Museum, located at 40 East Erie St., is pleased to announce its programming around the sesquicentennial of the Great Chicago Fire. The Driehaus Museum is uniquely poised to tell the story of this historic event because it is housed in the Nickerson Mansion.

Built from 1879-1883, it is one of Chicago’s earliest fire-proof residences that rose from the ashes of the Chicago Fire. A fire-proof residence was still a novelty even after eight years after the city burned down. The tour will continue in the neighborhood, where stops include the flame-licked spires of St. James Cathedral, the Water Tower, and the Pumping Station.

Audiences will grasp first-hand the direct impact the fire had on one Chicago family and one Chicago home. Through

this personal lens, visitors will more clearly understand how the entire city grappled with and was transformed by this historic event. It will also reveal how Chicagoans learned the painful and regenerative lessons that culminated in Chicago’s renaissance as one of America’s greatest cities.

During the week of the anniversary, the Museum will host two additional events: On Thursday, Oct. 7, at 6 pm CDT, historian Carl Smith will present a virtual lecture about the neighborhood around the Driehaus Museum and how its residents managed the fire and rebuilt their city. Drawing on his book, Chicago’s Great Fire: The Destruction and Resurrection of an Iconic American City, Smith will provide the essential context to understanding why Chicago was so vulnerable to fire and how the fire blazed through the city, sparing no one.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, young visitors are invited to the Museum to have tea with Mrs. Catherine O’Leary and the Nickersons’ neighbor, Mrs. Anna Tree, whose family built the nearby Tree Studios. This interactive experience will transform a historical event into a living, relatable and poignant moment. It will be followed by a reading of Fiery Night: A Boy, His Goat, and the Great Chicago Fire by Sally M. Walker and Kayla Harren.

Reps. Davis, Rush, Wenstrup, and Hollingsworth push bipartisan legislation to help people with kidney failure Washington, D.C. -- Democratic U.S. Representatives Danny K. Davis (IL-7th) and Bobby L. Rush (IL-1st), along with Republican Representatives Brad Wenstrup (OH-2nd) and Trey Hollingsworth (IN-9th), co-introduced legislation to encourage the development of new medical devices used to treat and/or manage individuals diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), commonly referred to as kidney failure. Currently, there are approximately 400,000 Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD, representing 1% of the Medicare population. However, ESRD patients account for approximately 7% of all Medicare spending. Rep. Davis said, “I strongly support research and development federal policies that would foster innovation for our Medicare beneficiaries living with kidney failure.”

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), when a patient has kidney disease, their kidneys have become damaged. Some of the factors that increase the risk of kidney damage include diseases, such as: diabetes; high

blood pressure; blocked coronary arteries; and other ancillary health issues.

Kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States.

“We should be doing everything we can to improve ESRD patients’ quality of life with kidney failure,” said Rep. Rush.

“This legislation would spur much-needed medical innovation to support patients suffering from ESRD, who often have few therapeutic options. Black Americans are more than three times more likely to suffer kidney failure than white Americans. Working to improve care for kidney patients has long been a top priority for me, and I am proud to join my friend and colleague, Rep. Davis, in introducing this important legislation.”

It is important to note that Medicare beneficiaries with ESRD have an estimated shorter lifespan than their counterparts without ESRD. In addition, ESRD patients are hospitalized nearly twice per year, contributing to higher health care costs, making their quality of life poorer as survival rates continue to remain more challenging.

“As a physician, I’ve personally cared for patients with ESRD. Ensuring that they have access to innovative new devices is important,” said Rep. Wenstrup, D.P.M. “Our bipartisan effort would ensure that the Transitional Add-on Payment Adjustment for New and Innovative Equipment and Supplies (TPNIES) program works to incentivize future kidney care innovation.”

“Hoosiers and Americans suffering from end-stage renal disease should have every opportunity to treat and manage their diagnosis,” said Rep. POLITICAL Affairs Obama Foundation Celebrates Obama Presidential Center Groundbreaking President and Mrs. Obama host virtual ceremony to mark the start of construction of the South Side cultural institution.

After first announcing their intent to build the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side in 2015 following a national competition among other cities bidding for the project, President and Mrs. Obama joined Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot at an official groundbreaking ceremony to mark the long-awaited start of construction for the Center.

“The Obama Presidential Center will be the world’s premier institution for developing civic leaders across fields, across disciplines, and yes, across the political spectrum,” said President Obama. “A campus, right here on the South Side, where we’ll train the next generation of leaders not just in government and public service, but leaders who want to start businesses, and run nonprofits, and be socially conscious in an effective way.”

Situated on 19.3 acres of the 550 acre Jackson Park, the Center will put the South Side on a global stage, bringing visitors from around the world to the Center, but also to surrounding restaurants, shops and other cultural institutions to boost the local economy.

“While this center will be one of a presidential scale, its presence and purpose still speaks to the same community-centered vision that have always defined the Obamas’ work – and there’s no better home base than the community that took the family from the statehouse to the White House,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “I’m particularly proud of our state contributions to these efforts – reshaping and enhancing trails and roadways throughout the neighborhood to ensure that the center is an accessible and enjoyable space for all.”

The Center is expected to generate $3.1B in economic activity, create thousands of jobs and serve as a catalyst that attracts other investment to the historically-underinvested community.

Construction of the center is expected to conclude in 2025.

Once completed it will include a presidential museum, a forum building with community space, a branch of the Chicago Public Library and an athletic center. The surrounding grounds will include a vegetable garden, reminiscent of Mrs. Obama’s vegetable garden at the White House, a sledding hill, playgrounds for children and open space for community events like farmers’ markets, family reunions and picnics.

At the ceremony, students from Chicago Public Schools introduced President and Mrs. Obama. Zell Wilson, a junior at Hyde Park Academy involved with Black Girls Code and Girls 4 Science, introduced Mrs. Obama. Trenton Banks, a junior at South Shore High School who plays basketball and also runs track, introduced President Obama.

Black PR Wire -- Getty Images and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) have announced the creation of the UNCF-Getty Images Scholarship for students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

The program will provide scholarships to students attending HBCUs across the U.S. and will be funded by revenue created by the inaugural Getty Images Photo Archive Grants for HBCUs, which is working to digitize the visual history of HBCUs. Launched in partnership with the Getty family and Stand Together, the photo archive program will commit $500,000 toward digitizing HBCU photographic archives. The grant will support the digitization of up to 100,000 photos for two HBCU grant recipients. HBCU schools will retain all copyrights, and the photos will be returned to the HBCUs after scanning.

“We thank Getty Images for its partnership and investment in our students’ futures. The Getty Images Photo Archive Grants for HBCUs exemplifies Getty Images’ commitment to support HBCUs and to give a visual life to previously untold stories,” Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF president and CEO, said in a release. “There is

a wealth of unseen imagery within the archives of HBCUs that have rarely been seen, and these grants from Getty Images will be an essential part of the ongoing documentation and preservation of Black history.”

All revenue from the HBCU photos will be distributed to HBCU schools to continue impacting the grants program. Fifty percent of the funds will go to grant recipients, and 20% will be reinvested to fund the Getty Images Photo Archive Grants. The remaining 30% will be distributed to the UNCF-Getty Images Scholarship to support the educational future of HBCU students.

The scholarships will be available for students in the 2022 academic year. Getty Images Co-Founder and Chairman Mark Getty is excited about the HBCU partnership.

COVID, Kids and School: Seven Simple Steps for Staying Safe Black PR Wire - This time last year, the coronavirus pandemic kept Florida’s schools closed and forced students to continue their virtual learning from home. Now, with another school year underway, COVID-19 remains an uninvited guest in classrooms across the state. And with the Delta variant leading to record-high numbers of cases and hospitalizations, experts say younger students returning to school this fall are at as much of a risk of contracting the virus as they were last year – perhaps even more so.

“The Delta variant is a game-changer because it’s so highly transmissible,” says Tina Carroll-Scott, M.D., medical director of South Miami Children’s Clinic, which is supported by South Miami Hospital. “More kids are getting infected and requiring intensive care this time. We’re even seeing infants with COVID-19.”

Dorsey Goosby, M.D., director of medical information technology for Baptist Health and a pediatric specialist for more than 40 years, echoes Dr. Carroll-Scott’s assessment. “Roughly 25 percent of all the COVID cases we’re seeing now are pediatric patients, and many of these kids are winding up on ventilators,” he says. “Pediatric hospitals everywhere are stretched to capacity.”

Complicating matters is a hesitancy among some people to get vaccinated or wear a mask, Dr. Goosby said. “Social distancing, masking and hand-washing are all helping, but the vaccines themselves have proven incredibly effective at keeping people out of the hospital,” he said.

The most important thing you can do, Dr. Goosby says, is to stay informed by getting essential information from reliable sources. “Don’t get your medical news from the TV,” he advises. “For the most accurate,

up-to-date information on COVID-19, go to the CDC’s website, the Florida Department of Health or the American Academy of Pediatrics.” Or, he says, just ask your doctor or pediatrician. “They keep up with all the latest developments, and they know your or your child’s health better than anyone.”

Now that children are finally returning to the classroom and the Pfizer vaccine has received full FDA approval, Dr. Carroll-Scott says that, as adults and parents, “we have a responsibility to do the right thing” and help keep them in school. “That means getting vaccinated if you or your child are eligible, and making masking and other mitigation strategies a part of everyone’s daily routine,” she says. Dr. Carroll-Scott believes that the COVID-19 vaccines will be approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for children five to 11 years of age within a month or so, and perhaps sometime next year for children under five.

In the meantime, what steps can you take to avoid COVID-19 exposure and keep your child healthy this school year? David Mishkin, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist with Baptist Health, offers these seven simple steps for keeping COVID-19 out of the classroom: Pick a good mask. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), your mask should have two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric; completely cover your nose and mouth; fit snugly against the sides of your face with no gaps, and have a nose wire to prevent air from leaking out of the top of the mask. The CDC says to avoid masks that fit too loosely, as well as those with an exhalation valve, and to wash masks daily.

Double up. Send your child to school with at least one extra mask, in case one gets lost or dirty. Label the masks so they don’t get confused with another child’s.

(Bonus: if you mark the masks on the outside, it helps the teacher learn your child’s name and recognize him or her more quickly.) Provide your child with a resealable plastic baggie to store their soiled mask.

Coach caution. Talk to your child about the importance of physical distancing and remind them not to share food, drinks, electronics, classroom supplies or other items. Although they may be glad to see their friends, this is not the time for hugs or high-fives. And be a good role model – if the adults in your child’s life wash their hands often, stay at least six feet apart from others and wear their mask in public spaces, then children are more likely to do the same.

Stop the spread. Keep your child home if they show any sign of illness. Check each morning to make sure they don’t have a sore throat or other signs of illness, such as cough, diarrhea, severe headache, vomiting or body aches. If your child has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, or has had recent close contact with a COVID-19 case, they shouldn’t go to school – even if they seem fine.

Set a home routine. After months of remote learning and the summertime hiatus, many children may likely struggle with returning to a more structured environment. Be patient, but consistent. Keeping a regular schedule for bedtime, meals and other family activities provides a sense of control, predictability, calm and well-being for your child.

Engage in your child’s education. If you’re not a parent who typically engages with your child’s school,

now would be a good time to start. Chat or email with the teacher if you have specific concerns about how your child is adjusting. And stay informed, as conditions can change quickly. Check your school district’s website, sign up for notifications or join a school-related social media group to stay on top of things.

Get help if you need it. Most children will manage well with the support of family, even if they exhibit some signs of anxiety, such as difficulty sleeping or concentrating. Some children, however, may have risk factors for more intense reactions, including severe anxiety or depression. Parents and caregivers should contact a professional if children exhibit significant changes in behavior.

Even if your child takes every precaution to stay safe at school, Dr. Mishkin warns, there’s still a possibility they could be exposed to another student, teacher or staff member who has COVID-19 and doesn’t even know it. If you suspect your child may have COVID, Dr. Mishkin suggests scheduling a pediatric urgent care visit through the Baptist Health Care On Demand app.

Young Children Gained Weight During The Pandemic A Kaiser Permanente study shows youngsters gained excess weight during the pandemic, with kids age 5 to 11 gaining more than 11- to 17-year-olds.

PASADENA, Calif. PRNewswire -- A Kaiser Permanente study of nearly 200,000 children showed that children gained excess weight during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those between 5 and 11 years old. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“When we compared the weight gain among children from 2019 to 2020, we found that there was more weight gained during the pandemic for youths of all ages,” said the senior author, Corinna Koebnick, PhD, of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation. “And, this weight gain fell disproportionally on the youngest children. On average, 5- to-11-year-olds gained 5 extra pounds, while 16- to-17-year-olds gained 2 extra pounds. The result was an almost 9% increase in the youngest children falling into the categories of being overweight and obese.”

“As children go back to school it will be important to focus on health and physical activity to help children not carry unwanted extra weight into adulthood.”

weight during the pandemic, researchers analyzed the electronic health records of 191,509 members of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California who were age 5 to 17 from March 1, 2019, to January 31, 2021.

The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic there was an increase in body weight and in the prevalence of obesity, particularly for children 5 to 11 years old.

Youth age 5 to 11 years gained 5.07 pounds more during COVID-19 than during the same time period before COVID-19, while youth age 12 to 15 years and 16 to 17 years gained an excess of 5.1 pounds and 2.26 pounds over the prior year, respectively.

Among 5-to-11-year-olds, this weight gain resulted in almost 9% more children becoming overweight or obesecompared to 5% in youth ages

12 to 15 years and 3% in youth ages 16 to 17 years.

Most of the increase among youths 5-11 and 1215 years old was due to an increase in obesity.

“We need to immediately begin to invest in monitoring the worsening obesity epidemic and develop diet and activity interventions to help children achieve and maintain a healthy weight,” Dr. Koebnick said.

(StatePoint) Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Yet, according to a recently released report, Black women in the United States face a perfect storm of issues spanning across every aspect of the health care system and society at-large that are causing them to die about 40% more often from breast cancer than white women. Indeed, in some metropolitan areas, the gap can be as high as 74% Why is this happening? As the report, “Closing the Breast Cancer Gap: A Roadmap to Save Lives of Black Women in America,” by breast cancer leader Susan G. Komen highlights, despite advances in science and increased access to early detection nationally, Black women face the combined effects of racial, gender, ethnic and other forms of bias while navigating systems and institutional structures in which entrenched inequities remain the status quo. This experience is felt by Black women nationwide, regardless of their income, education or insurance status.

For example, one Black health care professional who participated in a focus group for the report noted that her own experience is poor when she goes for treatment without her “white coat.” “I was ignored until the doctor came into the room and started asking me very specific questions. The way I answered made the doctor stop and ask my background. I asked, ‘why does it matter?’ She said, ‘Do you work in the health care field?’ I said, ‘More or less.’... She stopped, and she said, ‘Oh, so what's your title?’ I said, ‘It’s Dr.,’ and within 30 minutes I was upstairs in a room. If I get treated this way, then what do other people go through? I really felt like I was just another Black face, until they understood that this Black face came with a level of influence and authority.”

These issues are exacerbated by the socioeconomic impacts of segregation, unfair employment practices and racist policies like redlining that still divide many metropolitan areas today. For example, many Black women face difficulties finding high-quality cancer care located near them. In the report, one Dallas-area health care provider recounted how a 65-yearold woman walked about 10 miles in the July heat to get to her screening mammogram. By the time she got to the hospital she was dehydrated and had to go to the emergency room to get fluids before her screening. And those who rely on Medicaid or similar insurance are often turned away once they arrive or are forced to wait hours to see someone.

These transportation and insurance issues are just a few of the barriers tragically impacting Black women today. Whether it’s substandard care, the availability and affordability of diagnostics and follow-up care, unfair public policies, insurance practices and implicit bias and racism, the report authors stress that Black women are dying more than white women because our systems are failing them at every step in their breast cancer journey.

Leveraging the insights and solutions recommended in the report, Komen is launching a new initiative called Stand for H.E.R. – a Health Equity Revolution, to take specific action in each of the 10 U.S. metropolitan areas where disparities are the greatest.
