WTTW TO PRODUCE LOCAL CONTENT AND EVENTS FOR ‘MUHAMMAD ALI’ WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming fourpart documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, at 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, Sept. 19 on all WTTW platforms. Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm.

MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a threetime heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, power in the ring, his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it.

At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback.

WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website, wttw.com/ali.

The CVS Alumni Association answered the call from the high school’s athletic department for support by hosting a 5K run and walk to raise funds. The Association was able to raise $5,000 which it will donate to the athletic department.

CVS Football Coach Craig Brown is an alum of the high school and has been working at CVS for 26 years, he also is an alum of the high school.

He talked to Tawanda Perkins, president of the CVS Alumni Association, about some of the needs that the department had.

“We just wanted to support, and most of it is moral support, because the pandemic hit our teenagers and athletes really really hard,” said CVS Alumni Association president Tawanda Perkins. “We also wanted to offer moral support to the student athletes to let them know, ‘hey, we’re here to support you.’ We know how important athletics is to their high school experience.”

During the beginning of the pandemic, the student athletes’ season was uncertain. With school buildings closed for in-person learning, athletic programs were put on hold for the safety of the students and their coaches.

True Star Media developed a fourpart docuseries, “Champions Adjust,” to shed light on how COVID-19 affected the lives of student athletes.

The docuseries found that the junior and senior student athletes were affected the most because that were not able to play or been seen by college recruiters. Those students www.citizennewspapergroup.com

had to pivot and did so in really creative ways that included sending out videos of themselves working out to the colleges.

One of the greatest needs from the athletic department was for Hudl, a platform that enables a sports team to record and upload film, as well as livestream content. The platform is used for scouting, recruiting and can be viewed on mobile phones and computers.

There were between 75-100 people that showed up. The event was planned in an eight-week span. The hope is to make the 5K walk and run an annual event. The goal is to give the football team $2,000 and give the basketball team $2,000, with the rest going to the athletic department to decide how to spend it. The hope is that as time goes on, other sports and athletics in the building will receive support from the Alumni Association.

“Speaking from an alumni perspective, it was probably one of the best things I have seen this Alumni Association, Inc. do, as far as for the school,” Brown said. “Outside of the graduation, this is the one of the first things I’ve seen them do towards athletics in our school.”

Brown’s first priority has been the students’ health and safety while participating in sports during the pandemic. The students have adjusted quite well and there is a sense of normalcy, with some students having achieved some success during their seasons.

“As a 26-year employee and a 30year Alumni here, I really appreciate the Alumni Association, Inc. stepping up and hopefully we will get more of our association and alums to step in and aid in this so we can be the dominant Alumni Association in the city,” Brown said.

Illinois State Treasurer Frerichs Announces Fee Reductions for College Savers Bright Start 529 College Investors Will Save a Total of $500,000 Each Year SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs today announced another program management fee reduction for all Bright Start 529 college savers – the third reduction in five years.

Effective July 3, 2021, Bright Start dropped its program management fee – the fee charged by Union Bank & Trust, the program manager for Bright Start – from 0.075% to 0.07%, a reduction that will save college savers a combined $500,000 every year. The lower fees will help every Bright Start investor save for college at a lower cost.

“Six years after entering office in 2015, I continue to focus on delivering a low-cost, high-quality college savings option for Illinois families. I’m proud of the success we’ve had in lowering fees in 2017, 2020, and again in 2021. These fee savings help Illinois families save more of their hardearned dollars for their children’s educational dreams.”

In 2017, Treasurer Frerichs overhauled Illinois’ two 529 College Savings plans: Bright Start and Bright Directions. This action reduced fees by approximately 50% - including a reduction in program management fees and underlying investment fees, along with the elimination of any account opening or maintenance fees.

As part of the 2017 overhaul, Treasurer Frerichs negotiated a program management contract that ensured Illinois families would receive additional fee reductions as they saved more for college. Since those changes, the total amount saved for college in IL 529 plans has increased more than 70%, from approximately $9.6 billion to $16.9 billion. As the total assets have increased, program management fees reductions were achieved in 2020 and again in 2021.

Today, Bright Start and Bright Directions are among the most affordable college savings plans in the country. Treasurer Frerichs’ emphasis on reducing fees for both programs has saved families over $100 million since 2015. While lowering prices, Treasurer Frerichs has simultaneously increased the quality of the IL 529 College Savings plans. Since 2017, Morningstar, an independent investment and research firm, consistently has rated each plan among the best in the country. For example, in 2020, Bright Start was one of only three 529 plans in the country to be rated Gold by Morningstar.

“I encourage all Illinois families to save for their children’s educational dreams. Illinois families can invest in an Illinois 529 college savings plan with confidence and take advantage of the plan’s high quality, low cost, and generous tax benefits,” said Treasurer Frerichs.

Families can directly open a Bright Start college savings plan. Bright Directions is a college savings plan a family can open with the assistance of a financial advisor. Both are 529 taxadvantaged plans, meaning the investment grows tax-free when used for qualified expenses, such as tuition, room and board, books, and a computer. Funds saved in Bright Start or Bright Directions can be used at thousands of colleges, universities, trade, and technical schools across the country and abroad.

When Treasurer Frerichs assumed office in 2015, there were 387,000 accounts worth a total of $7.12 billion. Today, there are 762,000 accounts worth $16.5 billion across the two programs. Since 2015, families have used these accounts to pay approximately $5 billion in college expenses.

Research shows a child is three times more likely to attend college if they know they have a dedicated college savings

POLITICAL Affairs Senator Collins’ plan to expunge felony prostitution convictions signed into law The legislation is effective immediately.

Felony prostitution charges, which have not existed in Illinois since 2013, will be expunged under a new law signed today, the result of legislation by State Senator Jacqueline Collins (DChicago).

“The fact we have stopped charging prostitution as a felony means nothing to those whose records continue to be hurt by these charges,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “I want to thank Gov. Pritzker for signing this legislation and moving us beyond a dynamic that only serves to harm sex workers and perpetuate a dangerous, exploitative environment for them.”

While prostitution has not been prosecuted as a felony in Illinois since 2013, those with such convictions are still subject to all the penalties that come with a felony record. Included in the law is another provision that also allows defendants whose convictions may cause consequences under federal immigration law to file for a post-conviction hearing.

“Our justice system must operate on the premise that a defendant is well-informed of their rights and the consequences of their choices. There have been numerous cases in which those who plead guilty are unaware of how it may affect their immigration status, and are not well-informed by their defenders,” Collins said. “This is a step toward rectifying that.”

Senator Hunter’s bill will increase regulation in prescription monitoring program State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), led a proposal to increase regulations for the prescription monitoring program is now law.

“Primary doctors must be aware of any prescriptions being prescribed or filled for their patients in addition to what they prescribe to ensure any unnecessary prescriptions can be eliminated,” Hunter said. “Opioid overdose rates have risen in Illinois over the last year, and I want to take all necessary precautions so that patients are not over-prescribed but get the help that they need.”

Senate Bill 1842 allows the Prescription Monitoring Program to send automatic reports to prescribers and dispensers when medication shopping is detected from five identifications of a prescriber or pharmacy in a six month period.

The Illinois Controlled Substances Act currently allows the PMP to issue an unsolicited report to the prescriber, dispenser, or designee informing them of potential medication shopping when a person is identified as having three or more prescribers, pharmacies, or both that do not utilize a common electronic file.

This law will allow an unsolicited report to be sent, and changes the limit on how many prescribers or pharmacies a person can have from three to five. It also aligns Illinois law with the current federal Department of Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

“Doctors need to know what other medications their patients may be taking so none of the medications incite a deadly interaction,” Hunter said. “The right treatment is necessary for helping someone overcome addiction, and saving their life.”

Senate Bill 1842 is effective immediately.

Welcoming Our Students (BPT) - The classroom environment changed tremendously throughout the pandemic, with many children studying at home full- or part-time. This meant additional gear for many, such as tablets and workbooks, while some items like backpacks went unused while studying remotely. As millions of students head back to the classroom for the start of the 2021/22 school year, backpacks will be a necessity again, and experts have some advice to ensure a safer start to the school year.

"With a focus on getting back in the classroom and returning to 'normal,' it's easy to overlook possible injuries caused by everyday school supplies," said American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesperson Emily Dodwell, MD, MPH, FAAOS, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "Backpacks might not seem that high on the list of safety hazards for children, but if too heavy or worn improperly, they can cause pain or injury to muscles and joints.

Some potential problems could include wearing the backpack on only one shoulder, or a small child carrying heavy objects like a textbook, tablet or computer."

As part of its "Prevent Injuries America™" campaign, the AAOS is spreading the word that backpacks that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause numerous problems. Improperly used backpacks may injure or overuse muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. This is especially concerning for students in hybrid learning environments because they may need to carry more items back and forth to school and home throughout the week.

Tips for selecting and using school backpacks Shopping for a backpack is a fun part of preparing to go back to school, but many kids will prioritize fashion over function.

Caregivers can help guide children to choose a backpack they like that also benefits their well-being.

AAOS recommends backpacks that are lightweight with a waist or chest strap and two shoulder straps that are wide and padded.

Rolling backpacks are a good option as well. If your child resists using a traditional two-strap backpack, a well-structured crossbody bag may be a reasonable compromise.

3. Keep A Pulse on New Educational Resources. Stay updated on new resources and information that could positively impact your students. The great thing about this is that teachers and parents can both get involved. A few ways you can stay up to date are reading blogs, educational articles, and looking for resources on social media. One learning resource to check out is 3M’s Science at Home video series.

This online library of DIY science experiments uses common household items to help make STEM learning fun and accessible while showing kids they can connect science to just about anything.

Teachers will also note that the step-by-step resources include national science teaching standards for easy lesson planning.

America’s favorite rapping teacher, Dwayne Reed, shares creative ways educators and parents can help kids find a “way-in” to science that will ignite their passion for STEM learning and make science more approachable: 1. Extend STEM Beyond the Classroom. Show kids how to apply the scientific method in their day-to-day lives and activities. Parents and educators can foster an inquisitive mindset by challenging kids to explore the world around them. This creates fun and relatable learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.

4. Challenge Kids to Try Something New. Challenge kids to put themselves into roles they may not naturally see themselves in. Provide encouragement, resources, and confidence to get them to the next level. With a bit of creativity, you can open their eyes to a whole world of opportunities they may not be thinking about. Make STEM learning feel relatable and fun – even if it’s new for them. It’s all about reframing the way students look at the world and giving them assurance and an opportunity to explore what’s around them.
