KNOCKING STRESS OUT. STUDENTS IN THE RING FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS. Students from Excel Academy of Englewood, part of the Chicago Public Schools’ Options Network, recently learned a healthy new method to blow off steam and proper boxing technique at the TITLE Boxing Club Wicker Park. Organized by The B.I.G. Homie Project, the event focused on the importance of releasing stress and bottled-up feelings in fun and healthy ways, and destigmatizing conversations around mental health.

The Excel Academy of Englewood is an accelerated schoolof-choice for students, ages 15-21 years old, who have fallen behind in their studies. Students can earn up to five credits per semester and 10 credits per year, allowing them to graduate in two and a half years or less.

B.I.G. Homie Project is a non-profit dedicated to connecting youth from within communities of color with mentors and opportunities to reach their full potential.

CHICAGOLAND PERFORMING ARTS VENUES AND PRODUCERS UNIFY AROUND VACCINATION AND MASK REQUIREMENTS FOR AUDIENCES The League of Chicago Theatres shared today that a growing coalition of more than 65 performing arts venues and producers across Chicagoland have agreed upon Covid-19 Vaccination and Mask Requirements for audiences through the end of 2021.

This unified COVID-19 protection protocol will be in effect by September 1, 2021, for indoor productions, requiring audience members to provide proof of vaccination or negative test certification upon entry and to wear masks.

These venues and their performers, backstage crew and staff will comply with vaccination requirements and testing protocols to further ensure the safety of all guests and company members.

Organizations will begin notifying ticket holders for performances scheduled through December 2021 to ensure awareness of the new policies. Specific guidance and other venue specific requirements can be found on the organizations’ respective websites. The current protocols were developed by the coalition in consultation with public health officials. They will be reviewed regularly and may include an extension or relaxation of certain provisions if the science dictates.

Specific protocols may vary by venue, but in general, patrons will need to be masked and fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine in order to attend an indoor performance and must show proof of vaccination and identification at their time of entry into the venue with their valid ticket. “Fully vaccinated” means the performance date must be at least 14 days after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or at least 14 days after a single-dose vaccine. Where negative tests are accepted, guests may provide proof of a COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time, or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time. This includes accommodations for children under 12 and people with a medical condition or closely held religious belief that prevents vaccination. All patrons will have to wear a mask throughout the performance and during their time in the venue. Where refreshments are available certain restrictions may apply based on the organization you are attending.

Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives Micro Finance Group has changed its name to Greenwood Archer Capital.

With the name change comes more commitment from the Community Development Financial Institution to invest in the Black community.

Greenwood and Archer is the intersection of what was Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Black Wall Street. It was the epicenter of thriving business. The name change also brings a separate identity for Greenwood, which Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives is the parent company of, as a small business lender.

Greenwood Archer Capital was founded in 2012 and since its founding it has distributed almost $18 million in loans and grants to more than 1,600 small businesses.

Erica King is the president of Greenwood Archer Capital. King, who grew up in banking and lending gained an appreciation for working with small businesses.

“It was very for us important to have an identity that really spoke to the work that we were doing in the space of providing capital to small businesses. So, we needed to come up with a name that

fully encapsulated our work and the impact we’ve had since 2012,” King said.

A Community Development Financial Institution is a responsible lender that is committed to serving the needs of underserved small businesses.

Micro Finance includes capital less than $50,000. Greenwood Archer Capital lends up to $200,000, providing both micro finance and small business loans.

“Those small businesses make up our economy. They’re the ones fueling the growth in our economy, providing jobs to individuals who live in our communities,” she said.

Along with the name change, Greenwood Archer Capital has a new mission: To lend its knowledge and capital to reverse the impact of institutional racism, to build vibrant and strong Black communities and lead an environment led by purpose.

Greenwood Archer Capital has increased its loan offerings. Previously, it was lending up to $100,000. It also has “Your Forte, Our Finance,” a collaboration with Matt Forte the former running back with the Chicago Bears. Forte and Greenwood wanted to support small Black businesses that did not have access to commercial real estate. The product will provide 100% financing, with rates currently as low as 3% for Black owned

businesses that want to buy commercial property for their business.

The goal is to create wealth and help Black businesses build assets. There also is a new equity investment product.

This product offers social equity and financial equity. Greenwood Archer Capital wanted to make sure Black business owners had access to capital.

The $25,000 of equity will be offered to four Black owned businesses that align with the Greenwood Archer Capital’s four core programs.

The programs include Pathway to Enterprise for Returning Citizens (PERC), Food, Land, Opportunity (FLO), and EMPOWER, a partnership with Business Services Collective.

“Our loans have improved commercial spaces in low to moderate income communities. You think about a lot of the abandoned retail spaces. We have folks who are getting capital to move into those spaces and are now opening up businesses and providing much needed resources to underserved communities.

We’re increasing dollars and allowing those dollars to circulate and stay in our communities a little bit longer, she said.

UChicago Board of Trustees’ gift launches new $200 million commitment to undergraduate financial aid and educational access Largest gift in support of financial aid at University of Chicago honors President Robert J. Zimmer PRNewswire -- The University of Chicago is launching a new $200 million commitment to educational access and financial aid for undergraduate students through a gift and challenge from the University’s Board of Trustees in honor of President Robert J. Zimmer.

Members of the Board have donated $105 million to the Odyssey Scholarship Program, the University’s flagship financial aid initiative that helps ensure need-blind, loan-free education for students regardless of their economic circumstances. Their gifts—the largest in support of financial aid in University history—also will serve as a challenge to raise a total of $200 million with the support of UChicago alumni, parents and friends.

The transformative effort, which will establish the Robert J. Zimmer Odyssey Scholarship Fund, honors Zimmer’s unwavering commitment during his 15-year presidency to expanding undergraduate financial aid and educational access to the University of Chicago. Zimmer launched the Odyssey program in 2007 with a $100 million challenge gift from an anonymous alumnus, whom the University dubbed “Homer.” In 2016, a $50 million gift and challenge from Harriet Heyman, AM’72, and her husband, Sir Michael Moritz, greatly expanded financial support for lower-income students.

Numerous others also have generously supported the program since its inception. The new initiative is intended to help sustain the Odyssey program in perpetuity.

The Odyssey program has ensured access to a UChicago education for more than 5,300 students of diverse backgrounds—many of whom are the first in their families to attend college—and provided support and opportunities for mentorship, study abroad and paid internships. It also eliminates loans and academic year work requirements. Since Odyssey’s creation, a number of University initiatives have expanded support and access for College students of all backgrounds, including first-generation and low-income students, Black/African American and Hispanic/Latinx students, military veterans, and those from Chicago and from rural areas.

“The Odyssey Scholarship Program has transformed the lives of thousands of students since its launch in 2007,” said Joseph Neubauer, MBA’65, chair of the Board of Trustees, who spearheaded the Trustees’ $105 million effort to honor Zimmer. “Providing access and support, and enabling all students to achieve their exceptional potential has always been central to Bob’s ambitions for the University of Chicago. Nothing could better honor his tenure as president than to reduce economic barriers for students of great intellectual promise to attend one of the world’s top universities. I applaud my fellow Trustees for their leadership in this important endeavor.”

After serving as UChicago president since July 2006, Zimmer will transition to the role of University chancellor this September.

“I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees for this meaningful gift and their support of the Odyssey Scholarship Program,” Zimmer said. “Removing obstacles to a rigorous education for students of high ability has been a longstanding commitment of the University of Chicago. Thanks to the generosity of Homer and so many others who have donated to Odyssey since his initial gift and challenge, this program will continue to provide opportunities for our students and their families for generations to come.”

When Homer made his $100 million donation in 2007—at the time, the largest in UChicago history—he intended to support all students’ ability to attend the College. He hoped they could “graduate without the siren of debt distracting them from fulfilling unremunerative dreams.”

Increasing financial support for students in need has greatly helped expand access and diversity at UChicago during Zimmer’s tenure. The incoming Class of 2025 will be the most diverse in the history of the College, with a record number of first-generation (11% of the class), Black/African American (13%) and Hispanic/Latinx students (17%). Currently, about 20 percent of students in the College are Odyssey scholars—this year’s incoming class of 360 Odyssey students is up from 250 a decade ago—drawn to the College for its rigorous education, the distinctive Core curriculum, and new academic opportunities spanning molecular engineering, the arts and data science.

“This gift and continued support of the Odyssey program is profoundly meaningful,” said John W. Boyer, dean of the College. “As a first-generation college student, I know first-hand the power of investing in a young person’s potential. Odyssey scholars are exceptional students who continuously demonstrate that, when assisted in accessing a UChicago education, they achieve greatly academically and in virtually every professional field. In addition to financial support, the program guarantees an internship or research opportunity to Odyssey scholars after their first year in the College. Since the launch of the Odyssey Career Program in 2015, nearly 1,800 students have earned funded internships.

After her first year as an Odyssey scholar, Symphony Fletcher, AB’20, worked in Guatemala as an intern with the non-governmental organization MealFlour, which helps prevent health problems related to protein deficiency.

Currently a student at UChicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, Fletcher is completing two fellowships at NYU and through the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program, concentrating on trauma recovery and trauma and violence prevention resources for adolescents.

“Attending the University of Chicago through the Odyssey Scholarship Program changed the course of my life,” said Fletcher, who grew up in Houston. “Because of the opportunities to travel and work internationally, as well as the guidance and mentorship I received, I’m well-prepared to pursue a career in public health.”

Over the years, more than 18,000 members of the University community, including faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends, have donated to the Odyssey program—many of them former Odyssey students who have benefited from the program.

POLITICAL Affairs State Rep. Justin Slaughter Champion legislation That Will Create A Statewide Resentencing Task Force Rep. Slaughter House Bill 3587, passed both houses with a strong bipartisan support. To reduce Illinois’ ever-growing prison expenditures and advance the interests of justice, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently championed legislation that will create a statewide task force on resentencing which will look for ways to safely reduce Illinois’ prison population.

“Millions of Black and Brown individuals were either incarcerated or over sentenced due to racist policing and policies that peaked during the failed War on Drugs,” said Slaughter. “Our communities are dying, and we can no longer afford to wait to be handed down a solution.

Now is the time for change.”

“We are simply spending too much money and resources on locking people up in cages instead of improving our schools, feeding the needy and sheltering the homeless,” said Slaughter. “Our government’s dollars should work for us instead of working to lock us up.”

Rep. Kam Buckner Receives Human Trafficking Task Force Appointment Buckner, has been appointed to the newly crated Human Trafficking Task Force to help develop policies and best practices for combating Illinois human trafficking isssues.

“Illinois is a national and international crossroads for goods and transportation. Unfortunately, that also makes Illinois a crossroads for human trafficking,” Buckner said. “As a member of the Human Trafficking Task Force, I will work to improve our response to human trafficking and ensure that the resources necessary for human trafficking prevention and survivor support are available.”

Buckner sponsored Senate Bill 1599, recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, to create the Human Trafficking Task Force. The task force will work to improve data sharing and collection between government agencies about human trafficking and study how the state can work with private and non-profit entities to prevent human trafficking and provide assistance to survivors. The task force will also identify best practices for reducing disparities in the treatment of missing persons cases based on gender and race. Buckner sponsored Senate Bill 1599, which was recently signed into law by the governor.

Illinois Secretary of State Candidate Pat Dowell calls for Digital Driver's License Pat Dowell, candidate for Democratic nominee for Illinois Secretary of State, announced another innovation for the Secretary of State’s office. She proposed the creation of a digital driver’s license that would be available on your phone, like a boarding pass, an idea that is becoming a reality in many states across the country. The digital license would be available to augment a hard copy license.

Dowell said, “Digital driver’s licenses are more secure and more convenient. Whether at an airport security check, a traffic stop, or an age verification, a scan of a driver’s license on your cell phone can quickly give accurate information and save officials and Illinoisans time and trouble. You would be able to access your digital driver’s license on your phone, either through the personal dashboard I’ve proposed or as a standalone app.”

“Illinois cannot afford to be left behind in this digital age. If other states can do digital driver’s licenses, why can’t we?” said Dowell. “In a post-COVID world, we need to use as many digital tools as we can to make it easier and safer for people.”

Similarly, the Tayion Collection will be available as a custom suit program in all 630 Men’s Wearhouse locations. Plans are also in the works to expand clothing options to include shirts and ties.

“The custom suit program will begin in Spring of 2022,” stated Holland. “It’s very exciting to be operating on this level of volume and distribution, as it’s entirely new for me. It takes me back to the beginning where I served in the United States Marine Corps and traveled the world designing custom pieces for myself. After completing my graduate degree in education, I taught high school History. Then I went out

on a limb, moved out of my comfort zone and launched Tayion.”

Holland’s mantra revolves around his comfort zone.

“There is no growth in the comfort zone and no comfort in the growth zone,” he said. “I try to find ways to push myself outside of my comfort zone every day so that I can grow every day. I want to adapt, adjust and overcome obstacles.”

Setting modest goals for 2022, Holland plans to hit sales of $8 million for the Tayion Collection and $5 million for the T-Fusion line. T-Fusion will receive a new look through a relaunch coming this spring.

“From the trends I’ve seen, retailers are looking for more diverse brands, both in terms of designs and fabrics,” Holland said. “I’ve been across the world as a Marine, as a top sales representative for Pfizer selling that ubiquitous little blue pill, and as a designer looking for my next inspiration. Tayion is an extension of my life experiences and is on the road to becoming a global brand, we’ll continue bringing it into more markets.”

T-Fusion, created in 2006, boasts a price point starting at $250-$300 and has been sold in more than 2,500 specialty stores nationwide, including K&G stores. The relaunch will serve as a marketing push and advertising campaign focused on the lines fresh and innovative designs created with the fashion-conscious consumer in mind.

NEWS 2020 Cook County property tax analysis: A heavier burden for businesses, Black and Latino suburban property owners Businesses in Cook County and Black and Latino suburban property owners are bearing the brunt of 2020’s property tax increases, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis of nearly 1.8 million bills by Treasurer Maria Pappas’ office.

The county will collect more than $16.1 billion in property taxes this year. That’s an increase of $534 million, or more than 3.4%, from last year. Second Installment bills were posted online August 12 and will be mailed to taxpayers later this month.

The analysis, along with more than 100 pages of detailed tables on suburbs, townships and Chicago, is available at cookcountytreasurer.com.

Key findings include: • Commercial and industrial property owners in Cook County – in its suburbs and in Chicago – are carrying a heavier share of the increased tax burden. Businesses are being billed more than $7 billion, an increase of $410 million, or 6.2%. Homeowners are being billed $8.9 billion, an increase of $114 million, or 1.3%.

• Property tax increases are hitting majority Black and Latino communities – both their homeowners and businesses – the hardest. These communities make up six of the top 10 areas with the largest tax increases for homeowners and seven of the top 10 increase for commercial properties.

• In the south suburbs, where taxes are already greater than in other parts of Cook County, some property owners are paying three to five times as much in taxes as the owner of an equally valued property in Chicago.

“Our research shows that inequities in the property tax system persist, particularly for businesses and Black and Latino property owners, and especially in the south suburbs. The 2020 property tax increases are exacerbating financial stresses in these communities

and thwarting economic progress and generational wealth-building,” Pappas said.

Not all property owners will see their bills increase because a number of factors determine property taxes. For 2020, several items affected the tax bills: • As scheduled, the Cook County Assessor’s Office last year revalued all properties in the suburbs south of North Avenue.

• The Assessor’s Office lowered the assessed values of many properties elsewhere in Cook County, citing the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The value of all residential properties was reduced by about 10%. Not all commercial properties received COVID reductions.

• Elected leaders in several suburbs increased the overall amount taxed, meaning property owners in those communities will see much higher bills.

The analysis found commercial and industrial property owners generally will see bigger increases in their bills than homeowners, as the overall tax burden continues to shift to them. The higher taxes come as many businesses continue to struggle with a loss of revenue as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, business properties in the south and southwest suburbs took on another 1.5% of the tax burden, compared with a 1.1% shift from residential to commercial in the north and northwest suburbs and a 1.3% shift from residential to commercial in Chicago. The shift in the tax burden in the south and southwest suburbs is striking, particularly for commercial property owners: • In Rich Township, which includes all or portions of Matteson, Olympia Fields, Flossmoor and Richton Park, the median business property tax bill rose by $3,895, or 13%, to $33,075. The median bill for homeowners declined by $114, or 2%, to $5,518.

cago Heights, South Chicago Heights, Lansing, Lynwood, Ford Heights and Sauk Village, the median 2020 tax bill for commercial and industrial properties is $12,563, an increase of $1,459, or 13%, from a year earlier. The median residential bill declined by $117, or 3%, to $3,321.

• In Calumet Township, which includes all or portions of Blue Island, Calumet Park and Riverdale, the median business property tax bill rose by $1,712, or 17%, to $11,508. The median bill for homeowners declined by $380, or 13%, to $2,652.

The 18 highest Cook County tax rates, which are multiplied by a property’s assessed value to determine how much a property owner pays, are in the south suburbs. Park Forest tops the list, with tax rates almost five times as high as Chicago, followed by Phoenix, Riverdale, Harvey, Markham, Ford Heights, Calumet City, Country Club Hills and Hazel Crest — all of which have tax rates that are three or more times higher than Chicago.

In the western suburbs, property owners are not immune to higher bills because tax levies rose and properties were reassessed.

As a result, homeowners in suburbs including Bellwood, Maywood, Hillside, Cicero and Berwyn will see significantly higher 2020 bills.

In the north and northwest suburbs, the median residential tax bill this year is $6,015, a decrease of $26, or 0.4%. The median commercial tax bill is $27,651, an increase of $2,026 or 7.9%. More than 80% of business property owners, and about half of homeowners, received higher bills than they did last year.

In Chicago, tax bills vary widely from ward to ward. About 84% of business property owners, compared with half of homeowners, are being billed more than last year. The median residential tax bill is $3,341, down by $1.63, or .05%. The median commercial tax bill is $9,659, an increase of $761, or 8.6%.
