PARENTS ENCOURAGED TO INCLUDE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IN BACK-TO-SCHOOL PLANS The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies are encouraging parents to include emergency preparedness in their back-toschool plans. New this academic school year, state law requires schools to hold a minimum of three evacuations drills while students are present to better prepare students and personnel for emergencies. Specifically, within the first 90-days of the school year, schools must conduct at least one law enforcement evacuation drill. These drills must be conducted according to the school’s emergency and crisis response plans, protocols, and procedures, according to a press release.

Every home, dorm and apartment should have the supplies needed to endure a storm, power outage or disaster. You can find a list of emergency kit essentials online at www.ready. illinois.gov.

FOOD ALLERGY PATIENT ORGANIZATIONS JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH A PSA CALLED, “SPELL IT OUT” End Allergies Together (E.A.T.), a non-profit organization that funds research to help solve the growing food allergy epidemic, along with four food allergy patient organizations, recently launched a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) called, “Spell It Out.” The PSA promotes the need for basic food allergy education in underserved communities and stars teen actors Mace Coronel (of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn) and Laya Deleon Hayes (of Disney’s Doc McStuffins) as Spelling Bee judges.

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST EPA AFFORDABLE CLEAN ENERGY RULE Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of 28 states and cities, recently announced a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule. The ACE rule replaced the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever nationwide limit on existing fossil-fueled power plants.

“The people of Illinois and around the country cannot afford the impact of unchecked climate change,” Raoul said. “The EPA’s Affordable Clean Energy rule is a huge step backward in the effort to address the devastating effects of climate change. It is a misguided policy that ignores the science of climate change and will prolong the nation’s reliance on polluting, expensive coal power plants, and will reverse progress toward clean, renewable, affordable energy.”

The Illinois Attorney General’s office has worked since 2003 to limit carbon pollution from fossil-fueled power plants. Most recently, the Attorney General’s office joined a coalition of states, counties, and cities in filing comments in opposition to the EPA’s proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan, and filed comments in opposition to the ACE rule as proposed.

For months, the founder of My Block, My Hood, My City, Jahmal Cole, has been leading small groups of runners through various neighborhoods across Chicago and encouraging them to meet new people and explore new places.

After seeing the way that running was able to impact people’s health and create a common ground between strangers, Cole decided to hosts the inaugural My Block My Hood My City Community 5k which recently took place in Marquette Park.

“Marquette Park is a place where you can find all different types of people from all different races playing soccer or basketball together.

There are a lot of families always holding their family reunions and to me, that’s the definition of Chicago, just people being there for each other. We wanted to show people the true beauty of that park by coming out and running our first annual 5K there,” said Cole.

In addition to the 5k race, Marquette Park was filled with an array of family activities for the duration of the event including bounce houses, games, free food, live music, and a community-driven art exhibit.

“We are just trying to unite people from all over Chicago,” said Cole. “This was just a day to come out where the community could meet people from all over the city and that’s what My Block, My Hood, My City does, we just connect people from all over the city.”

Proceeds from the event will go directly to funding My Block, My Hood, My City’s Explorer’s Program which serves over 150 high schoolers by exposing them to new parts of Chicago, potential career paths, and overall just expands their opportunities to have experiences outside of the neighborhoods where they live.

Students who participate in My Block, My Hood, My City’s programs were able to run in the race and according to Cole, participating in a 5K race is an effective way to teach the young people about goal setting.

“Kids are not even learning goal setting in school,” said Cole. “I think a quick 5k gives you a goal and then when you accomplish that goal you feel better about yourself. It gets them into the mindset of having goals and accomplishing them.”

Cole started his nonprofit organization, My Block, My Hood, My City, after working with young people in the Cook County Jail who could see the skyline through their windows but shared with him that they had never been downtown. After digging deeper, Cole found that there were a lot of young people in Chicago’s south and west side neighborhoods who were missing out on valuable opportunities.

“When you’ve never traveled beyond your block, that’s tragic because everything you can aspire to be has been shaped by just a few-mile radius and that’s not fair. Kids from the south side and west side of Chicago are not connected with opportunities to the same extent as kids from the north side and I want to do something about that,” said Cole.

Now through Sept. 26, youth teams can enter the Challenge by submitting a project that drives social change in one of three categories: Technology, the Environment or Education.

Winners selected by senior leaders from T-Mobile and the T-Mobile Foundation will receive seed funding and a three-day Changemaker Lab experience in Bellevue, Wash., to help take their projects to the next level.

For more than 20 years, Ashoka, a 501(c)(3) organization, has supported young social entrepreneurs as they address the world’s biggest challenges, strengthening their skills and transforming their ideas into regional, national and global social impact.

Last year, T-Mobile and the T-Mobile Foundation provided $60,000 in seed funding to help 30 top teams fast-track their world-changing ideas. Auburn Gresham boosted by annual festival

The Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side is known for a lot of things and one of them is the annual 79th Street Renaissance Festival.

Now in its 14th year, the free, outdoor festival will run Sept. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the corner of 79th Street and Racine Avenue, and is sponsored by the nonprofit Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corp.

Last year, 20,000 people attended the festival and thousands more are expected to attend this year, according to organizers.

And despite Auburn Gresham being known for its crime rate, Carlos Nelson, executive director of the organization, said there has never been an incident of violence at their festival.

“Knocking on wood because we have never had any incidents of violence at our festival. People come out to have a good time and that’s exactly what people get when they attend,” Nelson told the Citizen. “I know the news media would have you believe that Auburn Gresham is a dangerous place to live, work and socialize, but that’s just not true.

It has challenges like any other neighborhood but it’s a good place with some good people.”

In the past Nelson said more than 100 volunteers from Auburn Gresham volunteered, including members of the Nation of Islam.

“The police already do a fine job making sure nothing gets out of hand, but with the addition of private security guards we hired and having familiar faces from the neighborhood volunteering, I think that really adds value and keeps everything peaceful,” he said. “This event is not political or faith-based. It is truly a neighborhood event that is open to everyone.”

Nelson added, there will be something at the festival for everyone from children to adults.

There will be a petting zoo with animals; performances by the Jesse White Tumblers and the South Shore Drill Team; gospel, jazz and R&B music will be played along with legendary DJ Farley “Jack Master Funk” Keith playing house music from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 7.

the entertainment is home-grown talent.”

Keith, a 57-year-old DJ and music producer, has been a Chicago mainstay since 1981, when he became a member of the “Hot Mix 5” DJ team at the former WBMX-FM (102.7), which today is V103.

Local restaurants, such as BJ’s Market and Bakery and Harold’s Chicken, will be among the vendors selling food. And residents said they look forward to the festival each year because it shines a positive light on a community known for many negative things.

“I have lived in this community for 42 years and I do not regret it. I am proud to call Auburn Gresham my home,” said Gertrude Davis, 89. “I know we have folks getting shot up and an abundance of vacant lots, but so what. It’s still home for me and I for one am glad that each year this festival shows people how good our community can be when we all come together in peace.”

The overall purpose of the festival, said Nelson, is not only to provide a family event for the community, but to also promote all the wonderful things about Auburn Gresham.

“The intent for the festival is to promote our community as a great place to live, work, play, pray, and owning a business,” said Nelson.

“We want people to know that everything they might hear about Auburn Gresham is not true and there’s more good than bad when it comes to our neighborhood.”

APA President Calls For Comprehensive Public Health Approach To Gun Violence Gun violence in the United States is a public health crisis and should be addressed much as the government studies motor vehicle deaths, according to the president of the American Psychological Association.

“We collect more than 100 variables related to vehicular deaths, including weather conditions, speed, seat belt use, age, sex, seating position, and drug use of every sin-

gle occupant,” APA President Rosie Phillips Davis, PhD, said in a video recorded at APA 2019, the association’s annual convention. “Those data have allowed improvements in car safety and serve as the basis of car safety standards nationwide.”

Davis called for dedicated funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health to

study the causes of gun violence in order to develop prevention evidence-based solutions.

She also repeated her assertion that mental illness does not lead to gun violence.

“People with mental illness are no more likely to commit violent acts than people without mental illness -- and in fact are more likely to be the victims of violence,” she said. www.thechicagocitizen.com

“Factors like stress, alienation, and feeling aggrieved, contribute, for sure. But the research shows that the biggest and most reliable predictor of violence is a history of violence.”

Finally, she called for addressing the trauma experienced by victims of gun violence, as well as those who are traumatized vicariously, saying that “help is available.”

“I urge anyone who is struggling

in the aftermath of these shootings to reach outside of themselves, to their families, friends, and professional experts like psychologists to ask for help. There are ways to tap into your human resilience. There is a way through.

“Let’s work together to stop the spread of hatred and bigotry and to get guns out of the hands of people prone to violence.”

Study Finds 1 in 5 US Workers Age 40 and Over Have Experienced Age Discrimination in the Workplace Hiscox, the international specialist insurer, recently released its 2019 Hiscox Ageism in the Workplace StudyTM, which revealed that 21% of US workers age 40 and older have experienced discrimination in the workplace due to their age, and respondents believe they’re most likely to experience it at age 51.

The study, which surveyed 400 full-time U.S. workers age 40 and over, also found that more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents 65 or younger plan to continue working after they turn 66, and 62% of all workers did not receive any form of age discrimination training in the previous 12 months.

“Age discrimination in the workplace is an increasingly serious issue for businesses and employees as older generations continue to maintain their professional careers longer than their predecessors,” said Patrick Mitchell, management liability product head at Hiscox USA. “Discrimination of any kind brings serious reputational and financial risks to any business and can negatively impact a worker’s career trajectory. As such, businesses must take the necessary steps to prevent, detect and mitigate any instances of age discrimination in the workplace in order to fully protect their organization and employees.”

Most Remain Silent Although over one in five respondents shared that they faced age discrimination in the workplace themselves, only 40% filed a charge or complaint. Their reasons for staying silent included the fear of a report creating a hostile work environment (54%) and a lack of knowledge on how to initiate a complaint (24%).

Witnesses, too, were more likely to stay quiet. More than half (51%) of workers who witnessed age discrimination against another employee did not report it, and 62% pointed to a fear of retaliation by their employers as the reason for not speaking up.

Gender Plays a Role in Workplace Ageism While prior Hiscox data found that women are more likely to experience harassment in the workplace, the 2019 Hiscox Ageism in the Workplace StudyTM found that men were more likely to feel that their advancing age adversely impacted their careers.

Forty-three percent of men felt that their age has been a barrier to finding a new job since turning 40 years old, compared to less than one-third (30%) of women. More than one-third (39%) of men reported that age frustrated their career advancement since turning 40, compared to 24% of women.

How to Combat Ageism in the Workplace Businesses should take the following steps to prevent, detect and mitigate age discrimination in the workplace: l Prevent age discrimination by providing workforce training. l Detect age discrimination by watching for behaviors that indicate older workers are being harassed, excluded from projects and underrepresented in new hiring and promotions. l Mitigate the risks and exposure associated with age discrimination by responding to claims immediately and thoroughly.

The Cost of Ageism in the Workplace Often subject to common stereotypes regarding older workers, 80% of respondents who experienced age discrimination reported that it had impacted their career trajectory.

In addition to ageism impacting employee productivity, organizations face the loss of talent and institutional knowledge when older employees leave a company. In fact, 43% of respondents reported that they had left a company due to experiencing or witnessing age discrimination.

National Survey Reveals Dramatic Shift From Cable to Streaming Services The market research team at Colling Media, a top-ranked national digital advertising and marketing agency, has conducted a nationwide survey about cable-cutting and subscribing to streaming services.

Key findings include: l Migration away from cable is picking up speed—20% of respondents canceled their cable television subscription within the past two months. l There’s a corresponding move toward streaming services—39% of consumers have subscribed to a streaming service in the past two months (such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video). l 87% of consumers have watched a program, movie or video on a desktop or laptop computer, tablet, smartphone, or other mobile device within the past two months. l 39% of consumers say they are likely or very likely to subscribe to The Disney Company’s bundling of Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. l 73% of consumers say they are annoyed when an ad interrupts a YouTube video. Rosie Atchison Recently Celebrated Her Centennial Plus Eight Birthday !

Rosie Atchison turned 108 years young on August 15th. Her family through her a birthday party this past Saturday in the Englewood community to celebrate her milestone. Her family stated that they were blessed to have had her in their lives for this long. They are extremely proud that Rosie is still mobile and is still have a sound mind. Rosie celebration included family, friend, neighbors and many state and local politician.

Dedication of Coach Carl E. Bonner Sports Training Room and Study Hall At Wendell Phillips High School Coach Carl E. Bonner coached football and track at Wendell Phillips High School for 34 years. Coach Bonner was one of the first to be named a head football coach in the Public League. His outstanding coaching produced great players, some entering the NFL, i.e. Milton Biggins drafted by the Miami Dolphins under Don Schula and also played for the Dallas Cowboys where he was a member of the 92 Super Bowl Champions. Coach Bonner also developed and coached championship track teams that won the State Championship in 1962. The current football coach, Troy McAllister is quoted as saying "today at this dedication our intentions are to keep Coach Carl E. Bonner's legacy alive. We believe that it is a great, positive and successful model for our teams to follow. We want to impress these students with the model every time they walk into this room and see Coach Carl E. Bonner's name imprinted on this door, that they will be motivated and remember his great legacy." The study also found that while borrowing covered 24 percent of overall college costs, 57 percent of the families who borrowed to pay for college say they had always planned to do so as part of their paying-forcollege strategy. What’s more, many families are getting a head start on paying their loans back, with 41 percent making payments on student loans while the student is in school.

Families are being proactive in other ways, too. Seventy-seven percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 201819 academic year. Completing the FAFSA is the first step in receiving a financial aid award letter from schools. Of those who filed for the 2019-20 academic year, 25 percent did so in October, the first month the application is available. On the other hand, the majority of families waited until January or later to file, potentially missing out on free money for college.

EDUCATION More Families Have a Plan to Pay for College (StatePoint) College may be getting more expensive, but new research suggests that more families are preparing to meet those costs one way or another.

Eighty percent of families say they are confident in how they paid for college last year, and nearly half have a plan to pay for all years of college, according to “How America Pays for College 2019,” a recent study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company.

All this preparation could be attributed to the fact that the overwhelming majority of families recognize the value of higher education, with 90 percent of families agreeing college is an investment.

“The individual and socio-economic benefits of a college education are clear, so it’s particularly gratifying to see that families continue to view college as a worthwhile investment,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. On average, families report spending $26,226 on college in academic year 201819, with a sizeable portion of costs -- 43 percent -- covered out-of-pocket through income and savings.

Scholarships, grants, and gifts -- used by 82 percent of families -- covered 33 percent of costs, and that “free money” can be especially important, both logistically and psychologically, opening doors to opportunities that would be otherwise unavailable and even making a difference in the way students view the college experience as a whole.

by Chopra Jonas from a pool of highly qualified nominees. Together with Pilot, she’ll award McKenna and his school a combined $15,000 grant. He plans to use his $12,500 portion for college tuition, to gain the skills needed to make an even greater impact on social issues like hunger. The remaining $2,500 will go to his school to help continue fostering overachievement among its students.
