Public Relations professionals Clarence Williams and William Penn have joined together to create Nature Boy Agency. The agency offers lifestyle marketing, urban influencer engagement, promotion brand marketing, public relations, and mobile tours.

Penn started his own business, Penn Square and Associates, to work on a project. Later he went to do “event” work with Carol H. Williams Advertising Agency. He met Clarence Williams the senior event business manager while working there. Williams specialized in business-to-business and business-to-consumer promotions.

They decided to venture out on their own to start a marketing agency.

Nature Boy markets to Baby Boomers, the generation born between 1946 to 1964 and refers to the post-World War II baby boom. While that age group is the second largest in spending, they aren’t being targeted for marketing. “Baby Boomers spend money more consistently on tried-and-true products, unlike younger generations,

who tend to spend money on trends and more sporadically Penn said”.

When it comes to providing event services for clients in the midst of COVID-19, a lot of the conferences have moved from in-person to Zoom, or a hybrid of in-person for the first 100 people and the rest online.

Penn believes COVID-19 has allowed entrepreneurs to start businesses with very little money or upkeep, because a lot of the business is being done online.

Nature Boy has worked with Northwestern Hospital and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, as well as other companies to bring social engagement and coordinate events.

Urban Influencers engagement allows Nature Boy Agency to get its clients’ products in the hands of influencers who can promote those products by using their social media profiles.

Penn mentors’ young people who are interested in public relations from various non-profit organizations. He pulls his cohorts from the advertising and public relations world to speak to them about their careers. He and his contemporaries also engage in

workforce development in social engagement where people have to build out events. Those people are learning a skill they can continue to do throughout their lifetime.

Penn said the marketing landscape in Chicago has changed for the better. Before there were African American marketing agencies, there were general agencies trying to market to African Americans. There is a new groundswell of smaller agencies doing the work and they are beginning to blossom, not just in Chicago, but across the country.

“You just need very little to get started and once you do well for one client, they tell other people and it just grows by word of mouth,” he said.

Penn said with marketing, entrepreneurs should be thorough, very engaged to be successful.

“Really the big thing is to shut your mouth, listen to the client, listen to the people and what they’re saying they need, understand that and be able to expound on that and give them back exactly what they said,” he said. “It’s not about you, it’s about the product and it’s about how they want it. They give us a playbook and it’s our job to execute it.”

Application Now Open To Coach One Million Degrees Scholars One Million Degrees (OMD) is a nonprofit built to empower Chicagoland community college students, offering wrap-around supports to their students (“OMD Scholars”) to help them persist and succeed through school. In the face of a persistent public health crisis, One Million Degrees has worked over the past year to adapt and continue to serve their scholars and communities. An important pillar of OMD’s support network is OMD’s volunteer coaches, who work to connect scholars with professional and personal resources while helping to broaden scholars’ horizons of career aspirations and possibilities.

OMD’s coaches are more than just mentors; they’re thought partners, cheerleaders, and sounding boards.

Supported by continuously evolving trainings and a dedicated support staff, coaches learn new strategies for personal and professional development. The goal is to create a fulfilling, meaningful experience for all. “I am so glad that the OMD program was available for [my scholar]”, says Patricia Naughton, Adjunct Professor at the College of Lake County, “I hope that it will be for many deserving scholars in the future, too. Beyond coaching, OMD provides its scholars a range of holistic support, from financial assistance to academic intervention to professional development. OMD is one of the few organizations in the country working directly and exclusively with underserved community college students, and their results show their model’s effectiveness. OMD’s scholars graduate at a rate over twice the national average, with many scholars pursuing transfer to a four-year college or university to earn their bachelor’s degrees.

In the past year, OMD pivoted programming to address the onset of COVID-19. Understanding the value of support services for student enrollment and retention, and the importance of flexibility and adaptability under www.citizennewspapergroup.com

extraordinary circumstances such as the pandemic, OMD worked to gather information from scholars about their experiences and needs. OMD offered “emergency grants” to scholars at the peak of the pandemic, and worked to connect them with college resources like loaner laptops.

Social, emotional, and career support through continued relationships with program coordinators and volunteer coaches from the private and public sectors contributed to student enrollment, building a sense of community. Ultimately, with the help of over 500 coaches and countless community partners, OMD was able to serve 767 scholars across 10 different college partners.

Now, OMD is looking for new volunteer coaches to join our team. For the 2021-2022 academic year, coaching sessions will continue to take place virtually, with plans to incorporate some in- person opportunities in the spring of 2022. Applications are currently open for all seven City Colleges of Chicago and three suburban colleges (Harper College, Prairie State College, and South Suburban College).

Organizations Throughout Chicago Call on Illinois Legislators and Funders to Invest in Sport-Based Youth Development Programs “Chicago’s Comeback” campaign designed to mobilize community to sign Letter of Support PRNewswire – Monday, Aug. 9, members of Sport for Good Chicago, an initiative of Laureus USA, announced “Chicago’s Comeback,” a campaign encouraging Chicago residents to sign a Letter of Support calling on legislative stakeholders and funders to prioritize sustained, year-overyear funding for local sport-based youth development programs as they seek an equitable post-pandemic recovery.

The campaign highlights the value sports, and in particular sports-based youth development programs can provide in helping young people prosper, especially on the heels of COVID-19.

“Access to sport programming is not the same for all young people, and COVID-19 has exacerbated the inequities that prevent many young people from being part of a team,” said Ben Schornack, Laureus USA Chicago Program Officer. “We must leverage this moment to reimagine youth sports as a system that prioritizes youth development and equal access for all young people, regardless of zip code, race, gender identity, or family income level. With the support of the businesses and people of Chicago, we can collectively provide a new state of play that helps our youth heal, grow and thrive.”

Sports as a solution Research has shown that sports-based youth development programs help participants develop social emotional skills at a significantly higher rate than those in non-sports programs1. The need for these programs is greater than ever as research indicates children and adolescents are more likely to experience high rates of depression and anxiety after isolation2 - a reality many experienced over the last year. Yet, more than 80% of Chicago program providers are concerned about the long-term viability of their programs due to

financial constraints resulting from COVID-193.

Chicago’s comeback To launch the campaign, Laureus USA enlisted local artist Damon Lamar Reed to create We Play, We Heal, We Grow!, a mural that represents how sport has positively impacted Chicagoland’s young athletes. The mural was unveiled Sunday, August 8 at Gallagher Way, next to Wrigley Field, prior to the Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox game. Reed was joined at the mural unveiling by youth participants from Sport for Good Chicago programs, city officials, and Cubs All-Star catcher, Willson Contreras. Laureus USA worked with curator CNL Projects to commission this piece.

At the mural unveiling, high schooler Monica Griffin said, “Being part of Beat the Streets Chicago has had a very strong impact on me both on and off the mat. Goal setting and work ethic are just some of the life skills that I have been able to apply both in life and in wrestling. I hope many more kids in Chicago will have these same opportunities so they can achieve their dreams.”

Chicago-based organizations, including IMC Foundation, the Cubs and Cubs Charities, and Gatorade, one of the most influential sports brands in the world, were the first to sign the letter and support the campaign, demonstrating a commitment to providing equal access to sports and resources for local underserved communities.

Major Illinois airports will directly receive and spend federal funding thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt (DSwansea) that was signed into law Friday.

The new law allows Illinois airports that have 10,000 or more patrons per year to directly receive and spend federal funding. Under the current law, federal funding goes to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s aeronautics division to distribute to airports across the state, with the exception of O’Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago.

“This will give the major airports in Illinois the authority to make their own financial decisions in a timely manner,” Belt said. “This should help IDOT get these important projects done faster and reduce a considerable backlog.”

Currently, IDOT must approve all planning, construction, development and improvements to hangars. The approval process for these contracts has caused significant delays, and this measure would take the pressure off of IDOT and allow individual airports to move forward with projects on their own timelines.

“Larger airports in Illinois have the resources to manage the funding and make necessary decisions for the projects,” Belt said. “It’s important we include all major airports in the state, not just O’Hare and Midway, to speed up the approval process.”

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2022.

State Senator Robert Peters Signs New Legislation Benefiting Chicgao Public Schools Recently celebrated the signing of legislation he sponsored that would allow local school councils of Chicago Public Schools to fill vacancies in almost any situation under the Peters Law. “Parents, students and other members of the community have the right to have a say in how the schools in their area are run, and local school councils are how that right is realized,” Peters said. “If a small technical rule prevents them from being able to meet, then they need to have the recourse to fix that issue, and this law accomplishes this.”

In general, a local school council is not prevented from filling its own vacancies; however, when membership drops below the minimum number required to start a meeting, LSCs often find their hands tied. Senate Bill 652 lowers the minimum number of member required from seven to four so that vacancies can always be filled – even in situations with a large number of vacancies.

“We’re coming out of a global pandemic that put the future of public education into a state of uncertainty, so it’s extremely important that local school councils are still able to meet and make decisions about how schools are run,” Peters said.

The new law is effective immediately. Earlier in the year, it had passed both chambers of the General Assembly with no opposition.

Senator Martwick Law Will Strengthen Chicago Park District Pension System State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law that would help in securing the future of the pension system of the Chicago Park District by requiring it to follow expert recommendations, ensuring park district employees receive the money they’re owed in retirement.

“Many people rely on their pensions for financial security later in life,” Martwick said. “Ensuring the Chicago Park District pays its pensions according to industry standards will help it get back on track and ensure its employees have the funds necessary to retire.”

House Bill 417 eliminates the “multiplier” employee contribution method and instead mandates actuarially required payments be made based on real actuarial calculations by 2024. This law also provides a payment ramp for the Chicago Park District, which requires a $40 million employer contribution in 2021.

It also permits the district to issue up to $250 million in pension obligation bonds.

“Park district employees work hard and deserve to collect the pensions they’ve earned,” Martwick said. “Instead of kicking the can down the road on the pension funding problem, we’re fixing it now.”

The new law was signed by the governor on Friday and takes effect immediately.

Baker, Adegoke Steve Colson and Rudresh Mahanthappa The American Composers Forum (ACF) is proud to announce the culminating event of its two-year partnership with the Chicagobased, internationally-renowned Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and its Great Black Music Ensemble: a concert celebrating the 55th anniversary of AACM, taking place at AACM’s long-time partner the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th Street) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.
