SUPER-MAJORITY OF PARENTS SUPPORT MORE FUNDING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, HIGHER PAY FOR EDUCATORS, ACCORDING TO NATIONAL PDK POLL The 51st annual PDK Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools finds that Americans overwhelmingly support increasing investments in the nation’s public schools: six in 10 parents say their schools are underfunded, and 74 percent say they support a strike by teachers for higher pay. The poll also finds that educators are fed up as 60% of teachers say they’re unfairly paid and 75% of teachers say their community’s schools are underfunded.

“Over the last several years, hundreds of thousands of NEA members and parents have stood together for the public schools our students deserve, creating the nationwide #RedForEd movement that has won increased investments in students in states across the nation,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. “And yet, while the #RedForEd movement has helped more students and educators get the support they need, today’s PDK Poll should remind everyone that there is still so much more work to be done to correct the years of inadequate funding of our public schools.”

SYMPOSIUM EXAMINES MAKING ORAL HEALTH CARE MORE ACCESSIBLE A panel of distinguished leaders recently discussed the roles of the public, private, and philanthropic sectors in identifying and addressing the factors that lead to disparities in health care at the 2019 National Dental Association Convention (NDA) President’s Symposium which explored the challenges associated with bridging the health gap in the 21st century. The panel was held on July 20th at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel in Washington, D.C. For over 100 years, the NDA has been a national forum for minority dentists and a leader in advancing their rights. The NDA promotes oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color, and raising the profile of the profession in their communities.

JOINT LETTER SIGNED BY 17 INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS SENT TO HHS SECRETARY ALEX AZAR Illinois Department of Insurance Director Robert Muriel recently joined 17 Commissioners representing tens of millions of American insurance consumers in a letter sent to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, urging him to protect rules that address unfair treatment of transgender consumers. The letter states that changes proposed by the Trump Administration will undermine civil rights protections for millions of consumers, create an uneven playing field for health insurers and negatively affect state insurance markets.

The proposed changes affect Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits sex discrimination in health insurance and clarifies protections for transgender Americans from being denied lifesaving, medically necessary care. On May 24, 2019 the Trump Administration proposed regulations that seek to roll back protections that ensure equal protection from discrimination by insurers and providers.

Dr. Carl Bell, a respected Chicago psychiatrist and leader in the black community, recently died at his home in Hyde Park at the age of 71.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Dr. Carl Bell saw at a young age the ways that neighborhood violence can destroy families, communities, and a person’s mental health.

After graduating from Hyde Park High School in 1965, Bell went on to receive his medical degree in psychiatry and eventually returned to Chicago where he dedicated his professional life as a psychiatrist to addressing the root causes of violence in black communities and addressing the impact violence can have on people and specifically young people.

“I think that his personal life growing up and the experiences he had all resulted in him doing some of the work that he did.

I think seeing classmates that never made it past a young age inspired some of his black on black violence research and his research on what happens when children have a traumatic experience and what to do about it,” said Tyra Taylor-Bell, ex-wife of Dr. Carl Bell.

Throughout his career, Bell worked as a psychiatrist at numerous institutions in the Chicago area including Jackson Park Hospital, Chatham Avalon Mental Health Center, the Chicago Board of Education, and the Community Mental Health Council, according to The History Makers, a non-profit research

and educational institution creating a digital archive of African American history.

Bell was constantly conducting and publishing research that explored issues of children exposed to violence, violence prevention strategies, and HIV prevention, and fetal alcohol syndrome among other topics, according to The History Makers.

“He was passionate about his work and curious about his work. He loved deeply and he cared about black people. He was funny and he was also kind of a curmudgeon at the same time. He only said stuff when there was something to say,” said Taylor-Bell.

Not too long ago, in 2016, Dr. Bell participated in a panel discussion hosted by The Chicago Citizen that discussed Violence and Race Relations in America.

Bell shared with the audience that through his life’s work and research he realized that fetal alcohol syndrome, a condition in a child resulting from alcohol exposure during pregnancy, could be a contributor to the long-standing problems that he saw in his community.

“What I’ve seen, and it took me 45 years to track back what I was seeing, and what’s now clear to me is that all the things I’ve studied, from HIV to violence exposure to violence perpetration, is that a lot of them are related to subtle brain damage so we need to start there because it’s avoidable,” said Dr. Bell during the Chicago Citizen panel on Violence and Race Relations in America.

Gov. Pritzker Signs New Law Protecting Survivors of Domestic Violence Governor JB Pritzker recently signed a new law to help ensure the safety of survivors of domestic violence and their children.

“For too long, survivors of domestic violence have feared retaliation from their abusers while seeking refuge, but this new law takes a step forward in protecting victims as they write a new chapter in their lives,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Today’s action reaffirms our state’s commitment to empowering and supporting survivors and their families.”

The new law allows survivors to omit

their address – whether it be a home address or the address of a domestic violence safe house – from court filings if it would risk their family’s safety. Senate Bill 399 takes effect on January 1, 2020.

“It’s already hard enough for victims to take that first step and get out of their situation,” said Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines). “They shouldn’t have to live in fear of their address being released after being brave enough to get away.”

Sickle Cell Strong: Sickle Cell Disease Advocate Marie Ojiambo

It’s been more than 100 years since sickle cell disease was first discovered in America.

Today, the rare hereditary blood disorder continues to affect millions of people throughout the world.

Sickle cell disease – or SCD – affects approximately 100,000 Americans and occurs among about 1 out of every 365 African-American births, according to medical experts.

Nearly 1 in 13 African American babies are born with the sickle cell trait, which medical experts said means that an individual has inherited the sickle cell gene from one of his or her parents.

During its annual convention, the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), a trade organization that represents African American-owned newspapers and media companies throughout the U.S., partnered with Pfizer Rare Disease (Pfizer) to host a forum on this rare disease.

“I was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at the age of 1,” said Marie Ojiambo, a consultant for Pfizer, during the forum moderated by NNPA President and CEO, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. “And always wanted to be a support system and advocate for research, for other young women, going through the same thing,” Ojiambo said.

important for me to not only introduce myself by my profession, but also as a sickle cell warrior,” said the Kenyan native.

“When I competed in the Miss Africa USA pageant back in 2014, I made sure that my pageant platform, represented the same personal goals I had for myself and advocated for, sickle cell disease awareness,” she said.

Dr. Chavis emphasized, “The NNPA is grateful to Pfizer for introducing Marie Ojiambo to the Black Press of America.

Ms. Ojiambo is an excellent role model for millennials, and in particular for young African and African American women, who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields of study. Marie Ojiambo’s outstanding success as a research scientist is truly inspiring as she did not allow the challenges of Sickle Cell Disease to prevent her from achieving her professional career goals.”

According to the National Center for

Biotechnology Information, the sickle cell disease trait is most commonly found in places like Africa, India and Southeast Asia.

However, it is not exclusive to one race.

Also, as the Hemoglobin disorders follow the malaria belt around the globe, those who have the trait are relatively protected from malaria.

Although most who carry the sickle cell trait remain healthy, medical statistics show that if two healthy people who carry the trait join to conceive a child, there’s still a one in four chance with every pregnancy that they would have child with active SCD. Ojiambo, who graduated from St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in New York and who specializes in pre-clinical Pharmaceutical Research, is also the founder of the Sickle Strong Initiative—a Kenyan-based NGO whose mandate is to raise awareness around sickle cell disease and advocate for better health care opportunities for patients suffering from the disease in Kenya.

While she champions research and viable medications and solutions, Ojiambo also emphasized the importance of being regularly tested.

“Both of my parents were carriers of the sickle cell trait and so when they came together, I received the disorder,” Ojiambo said.

“It is so important to know your status and to get tested regularly,” Ojiambo continued.

“Take part in clinical trials and work to make sure you have access to primary care physicians and a good hematologist.”

College Dreams Come True Thanks to Elks Scholarships The Elks National Foundation has announced the start of the 2020 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest.

The Most Valuable Student scholarship is available to high school seniors who are United States citizens.

Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.

The application is completed online and must be submitted by the November 5, 2019, deadline. The 500 national winners will be announced in April 2020, after the top 20 finalists participate in the Leadership Weekend in Chicago, April 23-26.

No dream is too big for the Elks National Foundation.

This year, the ENF is investing $4.1 million in college scholarships for our nation’s future lawyers, doctors, engineers, innovators, and more. They’ve invested wisely. MVS scholars—all of whom demonstrate scholarship, leadership and financial need—are graduating from college at a rate of 90 percent, nearly 40 percent higher than the national average.

Through the contest, the ENF will award 20 top scholarships ranging from $20,000 to $50,000. The remaining 480 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships. Don’t Let Mass Shooters and the New York Times Destroy Freedom of Speech

“Online communities like 4chan and 8chan have become hotbeds of white nationalist activity,” wrote the editors of the New York Times on August 4 in the wake of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. Then: “Law enforcement currently offers few answers as to how to contain these communities.”

Wait, what? Is the Times really implying what it looks like they’re implying? Yes. “Technology companies have a responsibility to de-platform white nationalist propaganda and communities as they did ISIS propaganda,” the editorial continues. “And if the

technology companies refuse to step up, law enforcement has a duty to vigilantly monitor and end the anonymity, via search warrants, of those who openly plot attacks in murky forums.”

Translation: The New York Times has announced its flight from the battlefield of ideas. Instead of countering bad ideas with good ideas, they want Big Tech and Big Government to forcibly suppress the ideas they disagree with.

Not so long ago, the Times’s editors endorsed a very different view: “One of the Internet’s great strengths is that a single blogger or a small political group can inexpensively create a Web page that is just as accessible to the world as Microsoft’s

home page. But this democratic Internet would be in danger if the companies that deliver Internet service changed the rules so that Web sites that pay them money would be easily accessible, while little-guy sites would be harder to access and slower to navigate. Providers could also block access to sites they do not like.”

Now the Times says providers have a “responsibility” to block access to sites the Times doesn’t like. That’s quite a change. And an ugly one.

There are plenty of good reasons, both moral and practical, to oppose the suppression of white nationalist and other “extremist” web platforms.

dom of any kind and to any degree.

We must -- MUST -- have the right to form our own opinions, and to express those opinions, no matter how ugly others may find those opinions. Without that freedom, no other freedoms can survive.

As a practical matter, “extremists,” like everyone else, will choose to state, promote, and argue for their beliefs. If they can do so in public, those beliefs can be engaged and argued against. If they can’t do so in public, they’ll do so in private, without anyone to convince them (and those they quietly bring into their circles over time) of the error of their ways. The rest of us won’t have a clue what might be in the offing -- until

the guns come out, that is.

It’s appalling to see the New York Times endorsing an end to the freedom that undergirds its very existence and the prerogatives of every other newspaper and soapbox speaker in America. The only substantive difference between the editors’ position and that of the El Paso shooter, allegedly one Patrick Crusius, is that the shooter did his own dirty work.

CWA-Represented Employees Vote to Ratify Midwest Wireline Agreements Leadership of the Communications Workers of America District 4 has notified AT&T* that CWArepresented employees have voted to ratify two agreements in Midwest wireline contract negotiations.

6 Things You Need to Know About Vaccinations StatePoint - As misinformation continues to spread about vaccines, medical experts are reminding parents and the general public that vaccinations save lives.

“Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that vaccines are among the most effective, safest interventions to prevent illness and protect public health,” says Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of American Medical Association (AMA).

To help dispel misconceptions about vaccinations, the AMA is offering answers to six commonly asked questions.

1. Are vaccines safe? Yes, vaccines prevent individual illness and protect the health of the public. Currently, the U.S. has the safest vaccine supply in its history, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most common side effects are typically very mild, such as pain or swelling at the injection site.

2. Is it true that if everyone else is vaccinated, my family doesn’t need to be? No. Vaccines not only protect the child or adult who receive them, but also the health of their communities.

the disease. As evident from recent measles outbreaks in several states, when individuals aren’t immunized as a matter of personal preference or misinformation, they put themselves and others at risk of disease.

3. What vaccinations do my children need? Children should be vaccinated according to the recommended schedule of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which is designed to protect young children before they’re likely to be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases and when they’re most vulnerable to serious infections. For the latest recommended childhood vaccination schedule, visit cdc.gov/vaccines/ schedules.

4. I don’t want my children to get vaccine-preventable diseases. What’s the earliest age they can be vaccinated? Children can receive their first flu vaccine starting at 6 months old.

The recommended age for the first dose of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 12 to 15 months of age. If you live in a community experiencing an outbreak, or if you travel internationally, your baby may be vaccinated as early as 6 months of age. Talk to your pediatrician for additional information about when early vaccination may be appropriate.

5. I’m an adult, do I need to get vaccinated? Yes, adults need vaccines too. Sometimes immunity from

childhood vaccines can wear off over time. Adults may also need vaccinations because of their age, job, travel and health conditions. Talk with your doctor to determine which vaccines you need, and visit www2a.cdc.gov/ nip/adultimmsched for an online assessment tool.

6. Hasn’t the U.S. eradicated the major diseases that require vaccines?

One of the country’s greatest public health success stories is the remarkable decrease in infectious diseases as the result of vaccines. Unfortunately, that success has led some parents to stop vaccinating their children against diseases like measles, meningitis, polio and diphtheria. However, these diseases still exist, and can still debilitate and kill. If people stop getting vaccinated, diseases that were once considered eradicated could reemerge -- which is what’s been happening with measles outbreaks across the U.S. More information can be found at cdc.gov/vaccines.

HEALTH Does Your Child’s School Have Safe Drinking Water?

(StatePoint) As millions of kids around the country trade swimsuits and popsicle sticks for backpacks and pencils, parents should be advised that current research shows that contaminants in school drinking water can pose a threat to student health.

Municipal water, which is not always optimal quality, may contain chemicals, bacteria, lead or microplastics -- all contaminants which have been found in tap and fountain water in schools nationwide.

Lead, in particular, is a major concern due to old metal pipelines and systems that carry water into schools. According to a Harvard study published in 2019, 44 percent of the nearly 11,000 schools tested nationwide had one or more water samples with a lead concentration at or above their state’s action level. What’s more, a lack of federal quality standards and statewide requirements for testing school wat

sources and pipelines means that schools may have an undiscovered problem or that test results may not always be public knowledge.

While students who use school water can be at risk of consuming unsafe contaminants, there are practical steps families can take to help ensure kids are hydrating safely while at school, one of which is using a filtered water bottle.
