78% OF RECENT GRADS: STUDENT LOANS LIMIT LIFE, LEADING SOME TO FEEL REGRET In order to see how big an impact student loan debt has, Student Loan Hero surveyed borrowers who graduated in the last five years. The survey found that nearly 8 of 10 recent college graduates report that their student loan debt has hindered their life in some significant way, leaving them stagnant.

For close to half of survey respondents, high student loan debt has led to regrets about how much they borrowed (46%) and what they studied in college (46%). More interesting, however, is that those who work in a field related to their college major were more confident about handling their monthly loan payment (55%) than those who do something else for a living (34%).

For two weeks, Principal Kelly Thigpen, from Burnside Elementary Scholastic Academy, and Principal Terrycita Perry, from Arthur Dixon Elementary School, were in New York City participating in the Cahn Fellows Program Summer Leadership Institute. During those two weeks, they met with principals from other major cities across the country and developed new leadership skills to bring back to Chicago.

The Cahn Fellows Program, presented by the Teachers College of Columbia University, was founded in 2002 and seeks to improve large urban public school systems across the nation by providing distinguished principals with advanced professional development that will increase their leadership skills, according to information provided by the Cahn Fellows Program.

The two-week summit in New York City brought together cohorts of distinguished principals from Chicago, New York City, At-

lanta, Dallas, Denver, Tampa, San Antonio, and Miami.

“It was good to collaborate and it was also good to hear that we all had the same struggles. We all want what’s best for the children but we all were thinking about how to make time for ourselves as well because a lot of times, as principals, you don’t,” said Perry.

“It felt good to be in a space with people that feel what you are going through. We were able to talk about what we are going through whether it was research-based or just a personal reflection.”

During the first week of the Summer Leadership Institute, the fellows took a trip to Gettysburg where they were asked to analyze the leadership styles of the Battle of Gettysburg and reflect on their leadership styles to identify what was working and what could work better. They also spent the first week learning from prestigious faculty at Columbia University.

The second week, the Cahn Fellows examined the specific challenges that they

face as urban school administrators and brainstormed solutions to those challenges.

“It was a great experience to be with the Cahn Fellows and a great opportunity to grow as a leader. I was kind of at a point where I’m hitting a hurdle in my life at the school and we have a lot of work that we need to do academically for our students and it’s critical that I support my staff. I feel like the opportunity this summer gave me some great strategies and some ideas that I could come back and implement,” said Thigpen.

After the Summer Leadership Institute was over, both principals returned to Chicago and are now preparing for the upcoming school year. Of the many important lessons the principals learned during the Summer Leadership Institute, one stood out which was the importance of self-care for principals and school faculty.

“What I gained from the Cahn Fellows professional development about self-care was that I have to make sure that my staff also engages in self-care,” said Thigpen.

“I am here using my celebrity, using my voice, to put a face to this, because I also suffer from depression and anxiety. If you’re a human living in today’s world, I don’t know how you’re not suffering in any way.”

Award-winning actress and ‘Empire’ star Taraji P. Henson testified before members of Congress on mental health issues in the African American community.

The Congressional Black Caucus launched a task force on mental health issues in April of this year. They have held hearings on mental health and the increasing number of suicides among black youth. The CBC Emergency Taskforce on Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health is chaired by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ).

“I really don’t know how to fix this problem, I just know that the suicide rate is rising,”

she said. “I just know that ages of the children that are committing suicide are getting younger and younger,” the actress added.

“It breaks my heart to know that 5-year-old children are contemplating life and death, I just…I’m sorry. That one is tough for me. So, I’m here to appeal to you, because this is a national crisis. When I hear of kids going into bathrooms, cutting themselves, you’re supposed to feel safe in school,” Henson told the members of Congress and those in the audience in a hearing room on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Every year, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience a mental illness, but a National Alliance on Mental Illness study discovered that black adults utilize mental health services at half the rate of white adults.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago Celebrates Grand Opening Of New South Side Hub

During a recent grand opening ceremony, Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago celebrated its new south side homeownership office, 639 E. 87th St., in Chatham.

At this new location, Chicagoans will be able to receive assistance with mortgage lending, recommendations for certified contractors and repairpersons in the area, housing counseling services, and resources for successful homeownership.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago is a nonprofit organization that offers mortgage lending along with a wealth of resources for potential and current homeowners. The organization believes that homeownership is essential to strengthening communities and advocates for working families to build wealth through homeownership, according to information from the Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago.

While Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago has been working with south side residents for quite some time, the new south side hub will serve as their permanent stake in the community and allow residents to easily attend workshops, educational seminars, and meet in person with their mortgage lender.

“It’s a place where people from any of our south side communities can come and get the services we provide. Our central office is in Wicker Park which is a really long way for people to go,” said Tiffany Smith, Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago’s Chatham program coordinator. “By us opening this office here, it’s kind of putting our stake in the ground and saying that ‘we are here.’

While we’ve been investing in the community prior to opening the hub, we are physically here now and we have a space for you.”

As a second-generation Chatham resident, Smith said that the south side location is not only important because of the services that will be provided but also because of where it is physically located next to Seaway Federal Credit Union which has a history of supporting black homeownership.

“I was delighted to learn we were going to put our hub in the Seaway building, which has always been an anchor in the Chatham community. Even larger than that, there’s historical relevance there with Seaway being one of the first banks that allowed African Americans to get mortgages and that’s how we

populated Chatham. To me, this is like closing the loop and coming home again,” said Smith.

In 2018, Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago created 279 homeowners and counseled more than 1,000 residents on the south side and they are excited for the opportunity to increase those

numbers with this new office, according to information provided

by Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago.

Hunter’s new law strengthens TANF grant as a lifeline for families State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) passed a measure into law recently to help families in extreme poverty meet their basic needs.

House Bill 3129 eliminates the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) full family sanction.

The TANF program provides monthly grants to help families meet their basic needs, including rent, utilities, clothing, personal hygiene products, diapers, transportation and more. El-

igible families sometimes may receive a sanction, which suspends a TANF grant, when an adult does not meet certain participation requirements.

The measure, sponsored by Hunter and Rep. Mary Flowers (D-Chicago), would designate 75 percent of a family’s TANF benefit as the children portion that cannot be cut for any reason. When sanctioning, the remaining 25 percent is considered the parent’s portion and is subject to

sanction. 30 percent of the parent’s portion can be reduced if a parent is not complying with TANF participation requirements.

“The cash grant is meant to provide families living in extreme poverty assistance in meeting their basic needs, but sanctions can further push families into poverty and lead to children experiencing homelessness, ER visits and food insecurity,” Hunter said. “This new law allows us www.thechicagocitizen.com

to avoid unfairly sanctioning families and leaving them at the risk of severe hardship.”

The legislation also creates a Good Cause exemption for families who are experiencing homelessness, eviction or utility disruption which ensures that the TANF grant amount remains at 30 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

“It’s important that we are doing everything possible to ensure that

families going through hard times have the assistance and resources necessary to help them get back on their feet,” Hunter said. “By making sanctions for the TANF program rare and fair, we are making sure that no struggling families are being unfairly punished. This new law would also make adjustments to the amount of TANF benefits recipients would receive so that it is consistent with Illinois’s current cost of living.”

Illinois Payrolls Up 11,400 in June Unemployment Rate Drops to 4.3 Percent The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) recently announced that nonfarm payrolls increased +11,400 jobs overthe-month and the unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in June, down -0.1 percentage point from the prior month, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The May jobs decline was revised from the preliminary report (from -2,400 to +2,300 jobs).

Illinois payroll employment has shown variability since the beginning of the year, as have National payrolls. Average payroll employment growth in Illinois during the April to June three-month period, which provides a more stable measure of payroll employment change, was +10,700 jobs, with the largest gains in Leisure and Hospitality (+3,800), Professional and Business Services (+3,000) and Government (+1,500).

“Job growth remains strong in Illinois, and this administration looks forward to continuing to build on that growth with policies aimed at lifting up working families,” said Deputy Governor Dan Hynes. “With a balanced budget, a bipartisan capital plan investing in horizontal and vertical infrastructure, and legislation to raise wages and support small businesses, we are confident we are laying the groundwork for long term economic growth across Illinois.”

Over-the-year, nonfarm payroll employment increased by +79,200 jobs with the largest gains in these industry sectors

in June: Professional and Business Services (+19,400), Leisure and Hospitality (+18,100) and Educational and Health Services (+15,200).

The industry sectors with over-theyear declines were: Information (-2,900), Construction (-300) and Mining (-200).

Illinois nonfarm payrolls were up +1.3 percent over-the-year as compared to the nation’s +1.5 percent over-the-year gain in June.

The state’s unemployment rate is +0.6 percentage points higher than the national unemployment rate reported for June 2019, which rose to 3.7 percent. The Illinois unemployment rate was unchanged from a year ago when it was 4.3 percent.

The number of unemployed workers decreased from the prior month, -2.7 percent to 277,400, and was up +0.5 percent over the same month for the prior year. The labor force was up +0.1 percentage point over-themonth and +0.4 percentage point over-theyear. The unemployment rate identifies those individuals who are out of work and are seeking employment.

An individual who exhausts or is ineligible for benefits is still reflected in the unemployment rate if they actively seek work.

5 Reasons Kids Should Play Outside More StatePoint - Whether it’s dance lessons, computer projects, art class or yoga, kids these days are busy bees. And while such activities are enriching and fun, experts say that many kids aren’t spending enough time doing something much simpler and every bit as important as structured programming: playing outdoors.

“Finding time for the kids to play outside can be such a challenge for parents,” says Keri Wilmot, a pediatric occupational therapist and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org.

“As a parent, I worry about ‘stranger danger’ or whether my kids will be able to navigate social issues on their own. Without spontaneity, playtime has lost some of it’s fun.”

Outdoor play is necessary for healthy child development, according to The Genius of Play. The initiative, whose mission is to raise awareness about the importance of play and help parents make play a critical part of raising their kids, is sharing five benefits of unstructured outdoor playtime: • Physical Development: Research has shown that physically active kids tend to be leaner and healthier, while an inactive childhood can lead to a sedentary (and likely unhealthy) lifestyle in adulthood. • Problem Solving: Children’s imaginations are often stimulated by the world around them.

Being outside widens their horizons and can encourage kids to tap into their creativity in order to come up with solutions to challenges, such as learning how to build a sandcastle or figuring out how to climb up a jungle gym.

• Reducing Stress: So much outdoor play involves physical activity, thrilling moments and a sense of freedom, all of which can boost endorphins, helping to lower stress levels and reduce anxiety and depression. Interestingly, simply touching dirt when creating mud pies or digging for worms can be beneficial. According to a Bristol University study, certain types of “friendly” bacteria in soil have been found to activate the group of neurons that produce serotonin, which contributes to a feeling of well-being and happiness. So, don’t be afraid to let your kids get a bit dirty out there!
