DURBIN HONORS JUSTICE JOHN PAUL STEVENS ON SENATE FLOOR In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently honored the life of Justice John Paul Stevens who passed away on July 16 at the age of 99. Justice Stevens served on the Supreme Court for nearly 35 years.

Justice Stevens was born and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class. In between, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He practiced law in Chicago and served on the Chicago-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit prior to his 1975 appointment to the Supreme Court, according to a press release.

President Barack Obama recently surprised a group of students in Chicago who were in a meeting at the Obama Foundation headquarters as part of the Youth Job Corps program. The students were shocked to see President Obama walk into their meeting and join in on their conversation about activism in Chicago.

The group of students that got to spend the afternoon with President Obama are part of the Youth Job Corps which is a workforce readiness program that was created through a partnership between Urban Alliance, a national youth development nonprofit organiza-

tion, and the Obama Foundation.

The Youth Job Corps program provides workforce training and internships to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from the south side to help them build their pathway to success and economic stability as adults, according to information provided by the Obama Foundation.

“Part of the goal of this program is to expose you to what’s possible,” President Obama said to the Obama Youth Jobs Corps interns.

“Everybody here has already shown extraordinary talent and initiative.

All of you are focused in a way that I can’t say I necessarily was when I was your age. So you guys are already ahead of the game. Part of our goal is also to make sure that

you recognize that even as you succeed, that the communities from which you come are going to need you to be active and involved and engaged and focused. Because all of us, as citizens and generally, have an obligation to make sure that we’re tending to the city we live in, the country we live in.”

President Obama met several young Chicagoans during his visit, including Adarah Hale. Hale is a recent graduate of Kenwood Academy High School and lives in South Shore. During her time in the Youth Job Corp Program, Hale has been interning for Northern Trust in their Corporate Risk Management department and at the end of the summer, she will be heading to North Carolina

A&T State University to study criminal justice and biology, according to information provided by the Obama Foundation.

“A lot of minority students, and people who look like the people that are in this room, are always the people that are always two steps behind in life and with this opportunity from Urban Alliance and working with the Obama Foundation Youth Job Corps we all feel like we really got a chance to have an even playing field now and I really wanted to thank you for that,” Hale said to President Obama during his recent visit.

Overall, 13 students were able to meet President Obama and share with him their experience in the Youth Job Corps program.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot included in yearlong initiative to help deliver results for residents The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative recently announced the third class of forty-one mayors from around the world who will participate in the yearlong education and professional development program designed exclusively for mayors and city leaders.

The forty-one mayors, including Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, joined Harvard faculty and renowned management experts in New York City recently for a 3-day, immersive classroom experience to kick-off the program.

The third class of mayors continues the program’s reflection of global trends toward more diverse city leadership: Nearly half (18) of this year’s class are women with three serving as their city’s first female mayor Thirty nine percent (16) of mayors in this year’s class are in their first year of office Of the U.S. mayors, more than one third (12) are African American or Hispanic Nearly half (20) of mayors in the class have experience in the private sector, with ninety percent (37) bringing some state, regional, or county government experience to the role.

The Initiative is a collaboration between Bloomberg Philanthropies, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Business School that aims to provide an intensive learning experience for mayors and their senior leaders to equip them with the tools and expertise to effectively lead complex cities. Harvard faculty, staff, and students, alongside experts from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ global network, work with mayors and senior officials over the course of one year in the classroom, online, and in the field to foster professional growth and advance their capabilities to drive innovation and deliver results for residents.

Report: Blacks Seven-Times More Likely than Whites to Be Wrongfully Convicted of Murder

Blacks are seven-times more likely than Whites to be wrongfully convicted of murder.

Further, Black people are three times more likely than White people to be wrongfully convicted of sexual assault.

This is all according to The Innocence Project, which recently shared the harsh reality of being Black behind bars and the survival mechanisms innocent people employ to overcome being wrongly convicted.

“From their very first interaction with the police, to being arrested, booked, charged, convicted, and sentenced, Black people are discriminated against and disproportionately criminalized at every stage of the criminal justice system,” according to the Innocence Project report, #BlackBehindBars: Sparking a conversation on the Black wrongful conviction experience in the U.S. The report, which focuses on incarcerated individuals that have benefitted from the efforts of the Innocence Project, notes that to be a Black exoneree in America means: You are one of the 222 Blacks of the 365-total exonerees of all races, proved innocent by DNA since 1989, when the first exoneration by DNA occurred. This includes the 84 Blacks on death row who were exonerated (from a total of 164 exonerees of all races) You spent an average of 10.7 years behind bars for a crime you didn’t commit vs. 7.4 years for White exonerees (approx. 25% longer, on average) “How many people are convicted of crimes they did not commit?” asked Samuel R. Gross, a law professor at the University of Michigan, and the editor of the National Registry of Exonerations in a July 2015 opinion piece for the Washington Post. “Last year, a study I co-authored on the issue was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It shows that 4.1 percent of defendants who are sentenced to death in the United States are later shown to be innocent: 1 in 25.”

“Death sentences are uniquely well-documented. We don’t know nearly enough about other kinds of criminal cases to estimate the rate of wrongful convictions for those,” said

“I spent the next 16 years of my life there, all while prosecutors hid crucial evidence, and yet, not one prosecutor who hid evidence was punished or disciplined. I ask you, how is this

fair?” Collins said.

Dr. Shakti Butler, who consulted on Disney’s Academy Award-winning film, “Zootopia,” and has created widely used educational films and curricula addressing implicit bias and racial equity, told NNPA Newswire that the system continues to be alarmingly and increasingly unfair to African Americans.

“When I see data that speaks, yet again, to the gross inequities that impact Black People in this country my heart breaks,” Butler said.

“Isn’t it clear that data alone changes nothing. Data often validates and hardens perspec-

tives that keep reproducing the status quo …

We need action that dismantles systems of oppression and trauma. That action will only begin to take form once we address such uncomfortable questions and issues with vigorous courage, love and respect,” Butler said.

Black people in the United States have never been given a presumption of innocence in the criminal justice system, said Karen Thompson, the Innocence Project Senior Staff Attorney.

“Their entire relationship to justice is not a standard of not guilty but one of not guilty yet,” Thompsons said.
