MORGAN STATE STUDY DETAILS UNIVERSITY’S NEARLY $1-BILLION ECONOMIC IMPACT STATEWIDE, $574-MILLION ON BALTIMORE CITY Morgan State University President David Wilson recently announced the results of a statewide impact study, after the conclusion of a comprehensive analysis of the University’s economic and fiscal contributions conducted by Econsult Solutions, Inc., an independent Philadelphia-based economics firm. The detailed study reveals that Morgan is a valuable economic engine, making an annual $990-million financial impact on Maryland and $574 million within Baltimore City. In addition, the University supports more than 6,500 jobs statewide, nearly 4,000 of which are located in the city.

The study’s conclusions are based on data spanning fiscal year 2014 to fiscal year 2019. It examines seven key areas: operations, capital investments, student and visitor spending, wage premium, commitment to community, innovation and economic opportunities to local and diverse populations.

NEW SCREENING GUIDELINES REFLECT NATIONAL TREND Colon and rectal cancers are on the rise in America, and at an alarming rate for younger adults. According to the American Cancer Society, since 1994, colon and rectal cancers have increased 51% among adults under the age of 50.

According to Dr. Omar Khokhar, an OSF HealthCare Gastroenterologist, these changes reflect what he and his colleagues see in practice.”I think it’s a relevant change. It captures what we are seeing,” said Dr. Khokhar. “Anecdotally I have seen patients in their early 30s now with colon cancer or rectal cancer, so I think it’s important that we start to get involved and start intervening earlier to capture those folks earlier to prevent more cancer from being diagnosed.”

These screenings don’t have to be intimidating. The gold standard in colorectal cancer screening is a colonoscopy.

However, patients can also choose one of several other non-invasive tests, including home stool tests available by prescription. Dr. Khokhar says to talk to your doctor about your options.

CHATHAM RESIDENT HAYDEN SCHUMER WINS PUBLIC VOTE TO DESIGN ILLINOIS’ BICENTENNIAL MEDALLION SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently announced Hayden Schumer of Chatham, Il., as the winner of the Bicentennial Coin Contest. The design was one of five finalists voted on by the public. The winning design will be minted in silver on one side of the coin and distributed to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. The back of the coin will feature the state seal.

“Congratulations to Hayden Schumer on winning the bicentennial coin contest,” Frerichs said. “Thanks to Hayden’s artistic talent, Illinois will have a bicentennial coin that we all can be proud of to celebrate our state’s 200th birthday.”

Schumer, 21, is a graduate of Glenwood High School in Chatham. He recently graduated from Lincoln Land Community College with a degree in graphic design. He is pursuing a degree in communications at the University of Illinois at Springfield this Fall.

Schumer titled his design “The First 200” and said it depicted “Illinois’ strong, vibrant history.” The design features President Abraham Lincoln and multiple milestones and landmarks in Illinois..

The Chatham community is home to two unique options for small businesses in the neighborhood.

Boombox and the BopBiz Center both provide affordable options for small business owners to elevate their brand while getting to know the neighborhood’s consumers.

Boombox is an initiative across Chicago that offers the rental of a shipping container that has been converted into a small scale storefront.

The Chatham Boombox is located at 532 E. 79th St. and is available to rent daily, weekly, monthly, or by the weekend.

The BopBiz Center is located at 644 E. 79th St. and provides small businesses a professional office space to operate in and host clients.

Businesses can utilize the features of the BopBiz Center for a monthly fee.

“The good thing about the Boombox and the BopBiz Center is that it gives small businesses the opportunity to

try out a location before they make a decision on acquiring a brick and mortar storefront or operation. It gives them a low-cost option to check out if their business can be successful, check in with the neighbors to see what could be good about coming to the neighborhood, and also give the neighbors the opportunity to try new things,” said Sixth Ward Alderman, Roderick Sawyer.

The Boombox is a perfect place to start for entrepreneurs who have an idea but want to make sure that it is profitable.

“I think it’s obviously a benefit that we did not have previously and I’m encouraging people to take advantage of it while we have it, particularly those that are selling goods out of their house or their car. The ultimate goal is to get a brick and mortar location but I think that this is a low-cost option and people should take advantage,” said Sawyer.

The BopBiz Center provides a professional space to meet, pitch, train, and interview with WiFi, projectors, and whiteboards along with desk space,

telephone answering, mail handling, and the use of a physical office.

“I think it’s positive for the neighborhoods to have them and I encourage their use and I encourage small business owners to step out and come out to the larger marketplace to try and sell their goods and wares.

I think it’s a wonderful thing all around,” said Sawyer.

Sawyer himself was a small business owner and knows the financial woes of trying to stay above water while opening a new business.

“One of the things that people are afraid of when they are trying to open a new business is that upfront cost and if the business is going to be successful,” said Sawyer. “Having these smaller options to come out and try it for a week or two weeks, do some advertising, and then push your wares to the community with a lower cost option is usually a better fit and it gives you a better gage on whether you want to move into the particular area long term.”

Annual Rally and Peace March Unites Students from Across The City

Saint Sabina Church recently hosted their annual End of the School Year Rally and Peace March. The event was led

by Father Micheal Pfleger who offered his platform to young people from all over Chicago and students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to be able to speak out about the violence they have experienced.

“A lot of marches and events like this happen in Washington D.C. and in downtown Chicago, we like to have ours right in the middle of the neighborhood and I think it’s important we are not having to go someplace out of the community and we can do what we do here in the

community,” said Pfleger, senior pastor at Saint Sabina Church, 1210 W 78th Place.

Other notable attendees included Chance the Rapper, Jennifer Hudson, Gabby Giffords, and Will I Am. The well known public figures voluntarily attended the Rally and Peace March to show their support for young people and to elevate their platform to the next level.

“This is a lot of young people in the crowd, it’s honestly moving my heart right now. I just want to say thank you to Father Pfleger for including me in this. We want safety from all forms of violence and we want to show that we are going to be loud when we see it,” said Chance the Rapper, Grammy award-winning rapper and Chicago native.

At the rally, young leaders from the north side, west side, and south side of Chicago along with student leaders from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a school in Parkland, FL where seventeen people were shot and killed in February, all had the opportunity to speak at the event.

“We wanted to continue to strengthen this diverse unified group of young people in Chicago and then also unite them with Parkland kids so that we can continue to let people know that this is not just a Chicago problem, this is an American problem and whether you are from Parkland and you’re afraid of getting shot in school or whether you’re a Chicagoan and you’re afraid of getting

shot on the way to school, the common thread of it all is that young people are being killed,” said Pfleger.

Father Pfleger’s work continued after the rally by inviting people to meet every Friday at 7 p.m. at the church to walk with him through various parts of the community.

“We want to be out there to let our elders and our families know that we are present and we are going to consistently keep an open mind in our community and look to see what we can do to help,” said Pfleger.

Additionally, Pfleger is calling for people to meet him on July 7 at 10 a.m. where 79th St. meets the Dan Ryan Expressway to shut down the major highway and call for peace in Chicago.

NEWS Local Heroes to be Honored at the Black Fire Brigade’s Grand Opening CHICAGO – An industrious eight-yearold boy and a resourceful Chicago firefighter will be recognized at the June 23, 2018, grand opening of the Black Fire Brigade’s new home.

Torey Ankum already spends every moment he can at the site, painting and helping get it ready for business – even though he’s only in third grade. At the grand opening, he’ll receive the first-annual Corey Ankum Leadership Award, honoring his father, who died in the line of duty while battling a blaze in a vacant, one-story building that collapsed on 18 firefighters in 2010.

The group will also present its firstannual Arthur “Lee” Lewis Jr. Award, commemorating the African-American who won a 2010 federal lawsuit for the City of Chicago to hire 111 African-American firefighters. The inaugural honoree will be Eric Washington, the firefighter who in 2016 rallied the Chicago community to collect and deliver thousands of cases of water to help residents of Flint, Mich., dealing with toxic tap water.

“We’re proud to help our members do everything from studying to advancing in their careers, to honoring fallen comrades, to mentoring each other and the next generation, to networking and bringing our voice to public discussions, to fundraising, and even to hosting special events at our beautiful facility,” says Quention Curtis, President and founder of the Black Fire Brigade. “We’re focusing on Chicago, but we welcome all AfricanAmerican firefighters and EMS personnel, as well as their families and friends, to leverage us as a resource to engage with each other and with the broader community.”

A highlight of the event will be the unveiling of a memorial acknowledging 13 black firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty, and a display of their badges.

In addition, the Chicago police and firefighter honor guards will conduct the posting of the colors.

Invited guests will also include Derrick Curtis, Alderman, 18th Ward; Carrie Austin, Alderman, 34th Ward; Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State; U.S. Representative Bobby Rush; former Chicago Fire Commissioner John Brooks; and Mattie Rawski, the city’s First African-American female firefighter.

Reassessment Notices Mailed to Hyde Park Township Taxpayers Residential assessments decrease by median of -0.325% (less than 1%).

Improvements in residential assessment model are used in all of the City of Chicago 2018 Triennial Reassessment Chicago - Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios has announced that reassessment notices were this week mailed to close to 64,000 single-family and 16,000 condominium homeowners in Hyde Park Township. Reassessment notices contain proposed values for property Tax Year 2018, which will be reflected on 2018 SecondInstallment Property Tax Bills to be mailed and due in the summer of 2019.

Property in Cook County is reassessed every three years (triennially). For all valuations in the Tax Year 2018 City Triennial Reassessment, the Cook County Assessor’s Office (CCAO) is using an improved assessment model that better addresses the longstanding goal of reducing regressivity. This results in the more accurate assessments of homes.

The improved assessment model being used during the City of Chicago’s Triennial Reassessment reflects interactive collaboration between CCAO and newly available, renowned valuation and modeling experts and researchers at CCA and Tyler Technologies. (For complete details regarding the new assessment model, please see separate media release issued on this same date.)

“Improving residential assessment has been a priority during my time in office.

Each year, the Cook County Assessor’s Office reassesses one-third of the nearly 1.8 million parcels of property located in Cook County. For homes, “Assessed Value” is 10% of market value; businesses’ Assessed Value is 25% of Market Value. In this tax year, the Assessor’s Office is reassessing properties located in the City of Chicago. Hyde Park Township is the third township to be mailed in the 2018 City of Chicago reassessment.

Among the findings from the Hyde Park Township reassessment: • The median assessed value of homes

(single-family homes, townhomes and apartment buildings of 6 units or less) decreased to 13,147 in 2018, from 13,378 in 2015 — a median percentage decrease of -0.325% (less than 1%). The median sale price for single-family homes and other non-condo residential properties decreased from $133,000 in 2015 to $131,000 in 2017.

• The proposed assessments of condominiums in Hyde Park Township reflect a median increase of 10.54% in assessed value.

A single-family homeowner may compare his or her assessment to those of similar homes. The proposed assessments for Hyde Park Township will be published in the Hyde Park Herald and Chatham Citizen on June 27, 2018.

The Assessor’s web site (www. cookcountyassessor.com) also allows taxpayers to search for assessment information on reassessed properties.

Anyone may search for assessment information using a 14-digit Property Index Number (PIN) or by typing in an address.

Homeowners can check their property’s characteristics and search for information on similar properties to use as comparables if they choose to appeal their assessed values. Residential taxpayers may also file an appeal online, and the Assessor’s web site allows them to search for comparables and add those comparables to their online appeals.

“My primary goal as Assessor continues to be the fair and equitable assessment of properties in Cook County. I will also continue to work to make improvements to the assessment process and provide taxpayers with all the tools necessary to determine if their assessments are accurate,” Assessor Berrios said.

He added, “We will continue to work to ensure no one pays more than his or her fair share of property taxes.”

Rush Amendment to Provide Treatment for Crack Addiction Unanimously Passes the House WASHINGTON — U.S.

Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) released the following statement on the unanimous House passage of his amendment to H.R. 5797, the IMD CARE Act, which addresses a longstanding and discriminatory gap in coverage and

expands treatment options for those suffering from crack addiction.

The Rush Amendment expands the bill to include those individuals suffering from cocaine use disorder and explicitly clarifies the inclusion of cocaine base — more commonly known as crack cocaine — which,

along with opioids, have wrecked communities across the nation.

“With the passage of my amendment we have finally taken a historic bipartisan step in providing relief to those who have been addicted to crack. For too long, these individuals have www.thechicagocitizen.com

been ignored and denied access to treatment. Finally, today, we have stopped leaving black and brown Americans behind and instead, have decided to fight against addictions and the injustices that continue to tear our communities apart. No matter whether they are living on

Prairie States Delivers 1.86 Percent Medical Trend in 2017 Prairie States Enterprises, Inc., the Sheboygan, Wisconsin-based third party administrator, has announced that the self-funded clients they serve experienced annual medical cost inflation (or “trend”) of 1.86 percent in 2017. Get Sugary Drinks Out of Hospitals

Imagine you’re going into surgery.

You’re under strict doctor’s orders to avoid solids. But you’re drinking plenty of clear liquids like juice, Gatorade, and Sprite before the surgery. And you’re looking forward to the “protein shake” that the nurses have promised as a meal replacement after the procedure.

Then you realize that you’re on track to consume 30 teaspoons of sugar. The World Health Organization recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar, per day, for healthy people.

Physicians know that excessive sugar consumption leads to a host of ailments. Yet today’s hospitals are veritable sugar shacks.

This doesn’t make sense.

Our bodies weren’t designed to process copious amounts of sugar.

Excess sugar causes our pancreases to produce excess insulin, which

disrupts our metabolisms and causes our bodies to store its extra energy as body fat.

Sugar consumption drives America’s obesity epidemic, which accounts for nearly one in five U.S. deaths. Folks who drink one or more sugary beverages per day are 26 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who have one or fewer drinks per month.

Researchers have even linked sugar to certain cancers. One study of 60,000 women showed that women who consumed excessive sugar were more likely to develop uterine cancer.

It’s unfortunate that hospitals foist so much sugar on patients. The “protein shakes” given to people recovering from surgery are loaded with sugars like corn syrup and commercially refined oils.

For example, each serving of Ensure’s “Original Milk Chocolate Nutrition Shake” has 33 grams of carbohydrates -- i.e., sugar -- while

By contrast, a serving of chicken drumsticks contains nearly 30 percent more protein. Another “protein shake,” Boost’s “Chocolate Sensation” has just 10 grams of protein and 41 grams of carbohydrates. That’s more than a can of Coca Cola.

Patients are also encouraged to consume Gatorade to get electrolytes. But just 32 ounces of Gatorade contains 56 grams of sugar -- double what the World Health Organization recommends per day.

In most hospitals, patients can choose from a smorgasbord of sugar. Vending machines are packed with candy and soda -- and cafeterias serve dessert with most meals. One in five U.S. hospitals

even houses a fast-food restaurant like McDonald’s!

Medical establishments must do better. That’s why, for years, I’ve advocated for my hospital -- West Virginia’s Jefferson Medical Center (JMC) -- to remove all sugary drinks from its vending machines and cafeterias. We just did so.

JMC is one of the first hospitals in the country to offer low-carb meals to its diabetic patients. That’s hugely important. Recent studies reveal that a carb-restricted diet can slash long-term blood sugar levels for diabetics.

Other hospitals are stepping up.

In 2012, the Connecticut Mental Health Center began a “Sound Mind Sound Body” Initiative to improve the health of employees and patients. Now, patient meals only include water, coffee, tea, milk, and sugar-free juice. Geisinger Health Systems in Pennsylvania went sugar free for beverages in January. And other hospitals are swapping sugary protein shakes for sugar-free yogurt, which is full of protein, healthy fats, and “good bacteria” that aids digestion.

Hospitals have a duty to make people healthy. They can start fulfilling that mission by banning sugary drinks.

Katiz makes an emergency landing this summer with their first studio album ‘Ateri’

T

he band Katiz made its debut in 2017 as a Mini Djazz Dj with big dreams and giant expectations. Surpassing those expectations, Katiz is debuting their first studio album called, “Ateri.”

Based in New York, Katiz is led by maestro Polomixx, vocalist Sean Davz, Guitar Player Candel Etienne and Keyboard Player Richard

Ferrer. “In just one year we have worked so hard to earn the respect of our fans and even our peers. This album release is more than just about the album, it’s about reaching our very first anniversary. We are still standing and Katiz isn’t going anywhere,” explains Polomixx.

For the past year Katiz has added something different to the Haitian Music Industry with their mix of

Konpa, Zouk and Kizomba. The album “Ateri” is a culmination of those same Caribbean infused sounds. With over 10 tracks, Katiz found the perfect collaborations from artists like Sandro Martelly known as T-Micky, Olivier Duret, Power Surge and a few more.

“We have accomplished a lot in just a year” says Polomixx. “From having a float on Eastern Parkway

for the Labor Day Carnival, which isn’t an easy thing, to performing almost every month. It’s been exciting and now with the release of the album we are ready to make Katiz a household name.”

Register For The SAT: The SAT is an important part of admission and it's accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities. The College Board recently redesigned the SAT to make it easier than ever for students to show their best work. Students can take the SAT on August 25, which gives them a chance to practice for the test without the added pressure of being in school. And students can prepare-free-by logging on to Official SAT Practice for a personalized plan, including thousands of interactive questions with instant feedback, video lessons, full-length practice tests, and test-taking tips and strategies.

Show Colleges You're Interested: There are many ways you can let your top colleges know you're interested in attending. Visit a campus or go on a virtual tour; participate in an online chat hosted by the admission office; follow the college on social media; request more information through an institution's online inquiry form; and give it a little bit more information about your interests.

Research Financial Aid: It's important to consider college costs, so the College Board's Net Price Calculator has information on potential financial aid and the true out-of-pocket costs of colleges. The summer is also a good time to gather the financial documents needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which opens October 1. And the Scholarship Search tool from bigfuture.org helps students find scholarships, other financial aid, and internships from more than 2,200 programs, totaling nearly $6 billion.
