event was created 30 years ago to dispel the negative narrative about men and to dominate the media on Father’s Day with faces of Black men. She said right now, it is more important than ever to push the positive narrative of Black men to the forefront.

Moyo said the celebration allows people around the globe to see Black men and their families, what a celebration looks like that falls outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that’s being held “for the unity of the family.” She said it’s especially significant since the general market media would make one think that the only stories about Black men are those depicting images of gangs, jails and other negative things.

Moyo said Real Men Cook is an opportunity to talk about the hearts of Black men. Radio personality Ramonski Luv will host the live broadcast on the radio station 95.1 FM, which is aired in 19 countries.

Moyo said there will be 30 chefs who will be featured cooking

meals in their homes, with a focus on healthy eating. “We think our Father’s Day message will make our hearts healthy because we’re really walking around every day with broken hearts about what is going on with our sons and husbands, with the men in our lives,” she said.

Moyo credits 12 women in the media with assisting her in beginning the event. Moyo herself has a long career in the fields of media and marketing, with an expertise in African American marketing.

She said she always used her expertise to heal and build Black businesses.

Moyo said the event has been so successful each year for more than 30 years because it has purpose.

“When you have a purpose to your brand that is bigger than yourself and that is really serving others, that brand lives in the hearts of other people to the point where they won’t let you put it away, they wont let you bury it,” she said.

“This tradition, this event that became a global event will go on,” she said.

GRAB-AND-GO MEAL DISTRIBUTION RESUMES WHILE DISTRICT PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR NAVIGATING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT RACE AND EQUITY Meal distribution has resumed at more than 300 school sites following a temporary one-day suspension of grab-and-go meal sites due to recent transportation and safety challenges that were anticipated for families and staff. During the one-day suspension, CPS delivered meals to families, as previously planned and scheduled. For the current list of active meal sites, please visit cps.edu/mealsites. At the board meeting in May, the district announced that it would be providing its current expanded grab-and-go meals structure throughout the summer.

Also, to help students, educators and parents navigate discussions around racial inequities that spurred action in Chicago and throughout the country, CPS has provided an instructional toolkit for families and staff. “We support and stand with Chicagoans who are forcefully, yet peacefully, advocating for the rights of black and brown people. We created a package of resources for families to navigate these difficult times and we hope this leads to critical conversations in households and virtual classrooms across Chicago,” CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson said in a news release.

Since the final day of in-person instruction, CPS principals and nutrition staff have ensured families are fed and supported. More than 13 million free meals have been provided to school staff and more than 125,000 computing devices were distributed to support remote learning.

Alderman wants Black contractors to help rebuild the community

IEMA REMINDS RESIDENTS WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local offices of emergency management are encouraging residents to stay aware of local forecasts and be prepared for severe weather. The National Weather Service says heat and humidity could fuel afternoon and evening thunderstorms, producing strong and dangerous winds. The forecast serves as a good reminder: when thunder roars, go indoors.

IEMA offers severe weather preparedness information on the Ready Illinois website (www.Ready.Illinois.gov), a one-stop resource for detailed information about what to do before, during and after disasters. To help Illinois residents prepare for severe weather season, IEMA and the NWS developed a Severe Weather Preparedness Guide that covers flooding, severe weather terms and tips for staying safe. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AWARDS NEARLY $400 MILLION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT HIRING TO ADVANCE COMMUNITY POLICING The Department of Justice recently announced nearly $400 million in grant funding through the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) COPS Hiring Program (CHP). The Attorney General announced funding awards to 596 law enforcement agencies across the nation, which allows those agencies to hire 2,732 additional full-time law enforcement professionals. The awards announced are inclusive of the $51 million announced in May as part of Operation Relentless Pursuit.

The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers. In addition to providing financial support for hiring, CHP provides funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics. Funding through this program had been on hold since the spring of 2018 due to a nationwide injunction that was lifted earlier this year. The COPS Office received nearly 1,100 applications requesting more than 4,000 law enforcement positions.

This year, Real Men Cook will take place virtually from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 21. Its theme is: Our love as fathers has no borders.

Yvette Moyo is the co-founder of Real Men Cook and CEO of Real Men Charities. Moyo said Real Men Charities has always had a focus on health and wellness, healthy eating, longevity of Black men and how to sustain the mind since 1999.

“We have to continue that message, which we do every single week at the venue that we own.

There’s men’s wellness classes and men’s mindfulness classes and men’s yoga,” said Moyo. “And all of that is to fortify the spirit and body of Black males who are under a high level of stress every single day.”

Standing in front of the Walgreens located on 1213 W. 79th St., and after George Floyd’s death sparked nationwide uprisings and unrest, David Moore, 17th Ward Alderman, appeared with elected officials, clergy, contractors and community organizations, and called for companies to use Black contractors during the rebuilding process. “Use intentionality of hiring black people, use intentionality of hiring black contractors and when you’re intentional about this, then we can begin to move forward on [a] myriad [of] issues,” Moore said.

According to Moore, Black contractors built the Walgreens located on 1213 W. 79th St. and he said people need to understand the history of the location and where the community is today. “Where we are today, given everything that happened, wasn’t just about Mr. Floyd,” Moore said. “It was about systemic racism throughout.”

Moore said his focus on Chicago’s City Council and as vice chair of the committee on equity, is to make sure that there is equity in contracts and that Black contractors are hired for both labor and www.citizennewspapergroup.com

Moore said that he has spoken to both Walgreens and Walmart, but it isn’t just about those two companies.

“This is about every corporation from here in Englewood to downtown, to downstate by East St. Louis. So, we’re asking and we’re demanding for people to make sure they’re intentional in hiring Black people,” he said. “So, we’ve asked them to make sure that Black contractors were hired not only at this location, but throughout and to put a plan together.”

Moore said he reached out to clergy members and they made calls to companies. He also reached out to other elected officials and they made calls to companies. He said after a concerted effort, Walgreens agreed to a plan.

Father Michael Pfleger, of St. Sabina Catholic Church, said almost 20 years ago, the community fought to bring Walgreens to the location and they also fought to have a Black contractor build it.

“We need the businesses. [The] hashtag can’t be BlackLivesMatter, and nothing’s done to put it into flesh and reality. The nice phrases are great, but now they need to put it in[to] action, we need businesses

to come into the community and open up their businesses and stores in the community,” Pfleger said.

Pfleger added all the businesses that experienced damage during the unrest, need to open up again.

“You can’t determine [that] you’re going to open up on the North side, but not [on] the South side or West side,” Pfleger said.

Every one of the businesses has to open, he added. “They have to open up with the same speed. So, I don’t want to see that a Walgreens or a Jewel or a Walmart opened up someplace else and they’re back going and we’re still waiting to be done. They need [to] open up all at the same time,” Pfleger continued. He added hiring Black contractors doesn’t just have to happen in the Black communities in the city, but Black contractors should be hired in all communities in the city, he said.

“You’re going to find this hard to believe Chicago, but Black folks can work in the white community, too. We want to make sure they’re included and get equity in all the different stores, in all [the] different retail [stores],” Pfleger added.

“If the rebuilding is taking place, use African American contractors,” he said.

Mayor Seeks Appropriation Authority For Cares Act Funding In Response To Covid-19 Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot recently joined City Budget Director Susie Park, City Chief Finance Officer Jennie Huang Bennett and City Comptroller Reshma Soni to announce that the city will be seeking authority from the City Council Committee on Budget and Government Operations to appropriate $1.13 billion in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act grant funding.

The appropriation will provide critical supports for residents throughout Chicago who are struggling from the impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic, including persons experiencing homelessness as well as homeowners and renters, small businesses and those in need of additional mental health resources among others.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on residents throughout the city, and it has caused even greater, disproportionate damage to the many communities that are already struggling from historic disinvestment,” said Mayor Lightfoot in a news release. “The federal support from the CARES Act provides needed resources for services and programs to assist those who have been most severely impacted by the coronavirus, and while this funding is a good start, more help is needed as we rebuild our city from the damage caused by the virus.”

According to federal guidance, the CARES Act grant funding must be directed to COVID-related eligible costs, which includes both immediate health expenses in addition to programs that provide services that many residents desperately need as a result of the indirect economic and social impacts of COVID-19.

The plan set forth by city officials appropriates funding to build on public health and community investments and initiatives the Lightfoot Administration has already implemented to support neighborhoods throughout the city.

These initiatives include fines and fees reforms, INVEST South/ West, the Solutions Toward Ending Poverty (STEP) framework and more. The funding appropriation comes as the city recently entered the third phase of its reopening framework which allowed

for many businesses to restart their operations and bring employees back to work in accordance with public health guidance.

“The city is thankful to have additional federal funding support to offset the costs we have incurred in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Budget Director Susie Park. “These grants will have a huge impact not only in helping the city to pay for the necessary health response, but with the approval from the Budget Committee, it will also help the city to allocate resources into the neighborhoods that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.”

The CARES Act appropriations come on the heels of the city’s announcement of an estimated $700 million 2020 budget shortfall.

The decline in city revenues come from a combination of economically sensitive areas including the amusement tax, hotel tax, parking tax and restaurant tax. Losses from March and April alone reached $175 million and projections show similar losses from May, in large part due to the state mandated stay-at-home order.

In order to close the shortfall, the city will use $100 million in refinancing savings while seeking further savings and efficiencies by looking within departments and reprioritizing hires for 2020.

Since the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lightfoot Administration has taken many steps to help residents who are struggling due to the financial pressures presented by the crisis, including a temporary suspension on some ticketing enforcements and creating the Small Business Resiliency Fund.

The city has also closely monitored its expenditures related to COVID-19 and worked with federal and state agencies to determine what may qualify for federal reimbursement. For more information about the city’s response to COVID-19 please visit Chicago.gov/coronavirus.

HOW LONG O LORD, HOW LONG?

The words of King David that appear in Psalm 13 of the Old Testament echo in the hearts of American people of color today: “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?”

Despite its selfaggrandizement, America is an ugly, hateful place, filled with pain.

The building blocks of this nation were not freedom and democracy, but genocide, enslavement and race hatred.

The historical record is clear.

For more than 400 years

since we were dragged here, existence in this country for African Americans has been heart-wrenching.

For more than a century before that, people of the first nations suffered systematic attempts at extermination at the hands of European invaders bent on genocide.

Spanish-speaking people, whose ancestors inhabited this land for many decades before the arrival of English speakers, have been robbed and abused

at almost every point of contact with the oppressive forces of “Manifest Destiny.”

Asian immigrants and their descendants, who bent their backs to build this nation’s wealth, have at different times been unjustly barred entry into this country, deported for no legitimate reason and interned in concentration camps merely because of their cultural ancestry.

The perverse notion of white supremacy has done all of this. There are those who believe that, because of their “whiteness,” they are more deserving of the fruits of the labor of our community garden than are people of color. This evil notion of white supremacy can be tracked through the ages.

There no longer can be any pretext that America is populated with only kind and caring people who abide by the rule of law and respect the

sanctity of human life.

We live in a country that placed a pernicious and perverse human being in the highest seat of authority. And in so doing, all the minions of the worst demons of this country were let loose to victimize the most vulnerable segments of our national community.

African Americans are not the only people bearing the brunt of white supremacy, but we see our humanity denied and cry out for justice for: Ahmaud Arbery, killed while jogging in a Georgia suburb, Atatiana Jefferson, killed in her home in Fort Worth, Texas, Breonna Taylor, killed in her bed in Louisville, George Floyd, killed on a Minneapolis street.

These are just a few of the Black victims murdered in the name of law enforcement in America.

But let us not forget the

suffering of other people of color in America.

Let us not forget the daughters and mothers of the first nations, whose murders and disappearances at an alarming rate cause little concern among most Americans and get little attention in the country’s media.

Let us not forget the Latinx children locked up in cages like animals because they tried to enter this country in the same manner as countless Europeans who came without passports or papers two centuries earlier.

Let us not forget the Asian Americans who are spat on, punched and kicked by bigots who believe Donald Trump when he lies about China bringing COVID-19 to U.S. shores, rekindling old fears and intolerance toward anyone with Asian ancestry.

There must be responses

to these injustices. These transgressions must stop.

Americans of all stripes must make a legitimate effort to stop them.

King David prayed for a cure to injustice thousands of years ago when he wrote: “Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, ‘I have prevailed over him,’ lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.”

We must open our eyes and not sleep the sleep of death.

We must not let the enemies of justice prevail over us. We must march on, ‘til Victory is won.

4 Steps to Create a Household Budget with Staying Power StatePoint - These uncertain times are forcing more people to reexamine finances and rewrite their household budgets. According to the Pew Research Center in a survey conducted soon after the COVID-19 crisis began, 33% of Americans either lost their jobs or suffered a pay cut or reduction in work hours. Plus, 49% said the outbreak is a major threat to their personal finances.

Regardless of your situation, examining your budget and making some changes can save money and make your financial future more secure.

Here are four ways to budget wisely.

1. Calculate the bottom line: Figure out your baseline income. Then, categorize expenses by what you need to maintain your standard of living, such as a mortgage, utilities, groceries and insurance. Another category should include non-essential expenses. Determine if you also want to set aside money for savings, retirement plans or college tuition.

And, experts advise setting aside at least three to six months of expenses for emergencies. Once you have these numbers, you can calculate what you’ll need on a monthly basis.

2. Eliminate or reduce nice-tohaves: If your expenses are still too high, or you want to save more, take another look at discretionary spending and find ways to cut.

3 Expert Pay Negotiation Tips for Women StatePoint - As advocates continue to put gender equity under a microscope and some progress has been made, there’s still a long way to go. The income gap between men and women has yet to be closed, and while employers have a huge role to play in creating a level playing field, many women could advocate for themselves more effectively during salary negotiations.

A recent Randstad US survey found that 60 percent of women have never negotiated their pay. Additionally, roughly half of the women surveyed (51 percent) also said they’re more likely to leave a job because they’re underpaid, rather than ask their manager for a raise.

Asking for more money can be stressful, particularly for women. Research has shown that women have a tendency to both underestimate their value and avoid assertiveness (an essential skill for negotiating). These factors make negotiating more difficult, but no less important -- which is why you should be extra prepared.

Ultimately, the best thing you can do is advocate for yourself. For your employer, it’s all about the return on investment, and if you can make a solid case, most employers are willing to negotiate rather than lose you to one of their competitors.

Make a Commitment to More Family Meals Family Features - Spending moments together with loved ones carries obvious benefits like time to catch up and opportunities to bond, but sharing meals actually provides definitive value for families. With restricted social interactions and confinement at home due to COVID-19, many families are facing meal challenges that have shifted from juggling busy schedules to seeking new ways to mix up the traditional menu or using digital solutions to reconnect at a virtual table.

Nearly all the studies included in the systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated a positive relationship between family meal frequency and measures of family functioning.

3. On heavily floured surface, knead dough a few times and roll out to fit greased 10-inch tart pan.

4. Carefully spread dough into tart pan and bake 15-20 minutes, or until tart starts to turn golden brown. Remove from oven and cool.

5. Dust crust with cornstarch to help fruit stick to crust.
