Lightfoot announced the process to identify a qualified candidate to become the next Alderman of Chicago’s 24th ward. Interested candidates must have lived in the 24th ward for at least one year prior to their appointment, demonstrate their passion for public service, and most importantly, have proven themselves to be someone who represents the 24th Ward community.

“As I’ve done with previous Aldermanic vacancies, I will work tirelessly to find someone who embodies the values of the 24th ward and the rest of our city,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “This candidate must be able to speak to and advocate for the unique needs of the communities they will represent, as well as possess the lived experiences necessary to connect with their residents. I am committed to finding this person through an open and transparent process, as the residents of the 24th ward deserve no less.”

As has been done in years prior for open Aldermanic seats, this process must be completed within 60 days. Interested candidates will be able to submit applications to aldermanicvacancy@cityofchicago.org or mail applications to City Hall care of the 24th Ward Vacancy Committee. Applications are due by June 7 by 5:00 PM CT. Once applications close, the names and resumes of each applicant will be made publicly available, and a committee will begin reviewing each application thoroughly.

Mayor Lightfoot will form a search committee to review applications, interview candidates, and make a recommendation on the final slate of candidates. A final candidate will be selected by Mayor Lightfoot. Once confirmed, the appointed Alderman will remain in place until the next aldermanic election in 2023.

LANDMARKS ILLINOIS ISSUES FIRST REINVESTMENT PROGRAM LOAN TO GREATER CHATHAM INITIATIVE TO HELP OPEN ‘ARTISTS ON THE 9’ ON CHICAGO’S SOUTH SIDE CHICAGO – Landmarks Illinois, the statewide historic preservation nonprofit, issued its first loan through its Reinvestment Program Loan Fund to the Greater Chatham Initiative (GCI) to help finance the preservation of a South Side building that is now home to the organization’s “Artist on the 9” co-working space and gallery.

Landmarks Illinois Reinvestment Program loans provide up to $150,000 per project to preservation initiatives in Illinois where traditional financing is either difficult to obtain or unavailable. Landmarks Illinois made its Reinvestment Program loan to GCI in February 2022. The loan funded historic storefront repairs at 735 E. 79th St. in the Chatham-Greater Grand Crossing Commercial Historic District where GCI recently opened Artists on the 9.

Buckner, in talking to his family, friends, neighbors and colleagues in the Illinois General Assembly concluded, there was a sense the City of Chicago needed more direction. People don’t feel safe, nor do they feel there is a plan for their safety.

People don’t feel the school system is going in the right direction, business owners and community residents feel as though they are being left behind.

“My District encompasses a lot of the city, my District is wholly in the city, but many different neighborhoods and socio-economic backgrounds and demographics. I heard it across the board, whether it was Washington Park, or Greater Grand Crossing or River North, people were saying we don’t know what’s next for the city,” Buckner said.

As someone who is from Chicago, who loves the city and was raised in the tradition and spirit of giving back to people, Buckner saw a real opportunity and decided to run for Mayor.

He has served in the state, federal and local levels of government, and is aware of the issues that are important to people who need the most help.

Buckner worked for Senator Dick Durbin, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and led World Sports Chicago. He lives in Bronzeville with his family and is the father of a five month old son. He grew up in Roseland and Washington Heights, with his parents and four sisters. He has been a State Representative since 2019 and is the Chair of the Illinois House Black Caucus.

Buckner believes this is his Kairos moment. Everything is converging, his skill set, background and opportunities are meeting with what people need. He wants to bring the city to the next best version of itself. Buckner acknowledges that Mayor of any city is a tough job and Mayor of Chicago isn’t any different. He believes being Mayor of Chicago is the greatest job in American politics.

“What I was able to pick up from folks like Senator Durbin and Mayor Landrieu was that public service is not just noble work, it’s necessary work. We have to be able to do the things that matter to get people a decent quality of life so they can have a chance,” he said, adding that he learned his political work ethic from Durbin and Landrieu. “In a Buckner admin-

istration, we are going to be able to listen to all voices from across the city to give people agency and give them the ability to be a part of the solution and have some buy-in.”

Buckner hopes that during his time in the General Assembly he has shown that authenticity matters. He hopes he has been able to show that unconventional problems require unconventional leaders. A wealth of experience and knowledge and background can help bring everyone forward. He has been thinking about who could replace him the in General Assembly.

Buckner was the primary sponsor of HB4383, which was signed into law on Wednesday, May 18th. The legislation bans the sale of ghost guns – unserialized firearms, sold as a set of parts that can be assembled at home. He created the Missing and Murdered Chicago Women Task Force, with HB3932, in 2020. Through the Illinois Black Caucus, Buckner has led the way to bring more dollars to Chicago Public Schools.

Buckner talked to young people during the social justice movement after the murder of George Floyd and he was inspired by them, by the way they mobilized and organized.

He described them as the leaders of today. He is very proud of being able to increase the number of high school student’s representation for the Local School Council. He believes the legislation gives the students a seat at the table and agency.

Buckner believes there should be aggressive, unapologetic investment to communities that have experienced disinvestment. He believes those communities should be a priority from decision makers and he has a plan of how to get it done.

He wants to ensure that whatever he promises the people of Chicago, he is able to deliver on that promise.

Buckner believes violence in the city didn’t happen in a vacuum, it happened because things were ignored for a long time.

“If we’re serious about violence, if we’re serious about the pandemic, endemic of violence, we have to have the same attitude and say, we have to do everything, nothing is off limits. Let’s do it all, because people deserve that type of effort from their government to give them the ability to live,” he said. “I refuse to believe there isn’t an answer. There is an answer. We just have to make ourselves uncomfortable and have the conversation. Then, after the conversation, do the work.”

Governor Pritzker Calls on Federal Government to Fund Illinois Based on Population Increase Chicago — Governor Pritzker urged President Joe Biden and the federal government to ensure that Illinois receives federal funding that reflects its growth of 250,000 residents, lifting the state’s population to more than 13 million for the first time in its history.

Illinois’s population was undercounted by roughly 2% in the 2020 census. The adjusted Census results show an increase in Illinois’ population as people move to the state in pursuit of expanded economic and employment opportunities.

“Illinois is growing, and our federal funding should reflect that reality,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Nearly 250,000 Illinoisans—the majority of whom are from historically disenfranchised and underserved communities—were not represented in the Census results. That’s why I have urged President Biden and the federal government to ensure that the local communities of Illinois receive the federal dollars they are entitled to—and deserve.

I thank the President for his commitment to an accurate Census count, and I look forward to working with him to guarantee that our state secures its fair share of federal funding.”

Governor Pritzker’s letter to President Biden calls for adjust-

ed population counts to be considered when allocating over $1.5 trillion in federal funds for Medicare, affordable housing, homeland security, and other essential programs. Census undercounts often disservice Black, Latino, and minority residents who are historically underserved by federal resources such as these, making the correct appropriation of these funds even more important.

The letter requests that President Biden support any efforts to factor the new data into equitable funding allocations.

The Census Bureau’s Post Enumeration Survey (PES) is a follow-up survey to the census count meant to examine the results for accuracy through additional statistical sampling. The original census count, which inaccurately showed a population decline, resulted in Illinois losing one congressional seat, making accurate appropriation of funds even more essential to ensure Illinoisans can access the resources they need over the next decade.

This updated count reflects Illinois’s rising status in the region and the country as a site of innovation and opportunity.

Increased investment by the Pritzker administration in training and apprenticeship programs in manufacturing and aviation have created jobs and attracted new residents across the state.

Summer Tuesdays come alive on the MCA’s Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden, with free music highlighting artists from Chicago’s internationally renowned jazz community Beginning Tuesday, June 7th, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) is excited to bring back Tuesdays on the Terrace for the first time since 2019. Hosted by Al Carter Bey of WDCB 90.9 FM and featuring a different local Chicago jazz musician each week, the live jazz program will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from June 7 to Aug. 31.

Tickets are available on the MCA website. Admission for Tuesdays on the Terrace is free and walk-up tickets are available. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis; there are no pre-reserved seating options. In the event of rain, the event will move indoors to the Edlis Neeson Theater on the museum’s first floor.

COLLINS CALLS FOR GUN REFORM TO PREVENT FUTURE TRAGEDIES State Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago), an anti-violence advocate disheartened by yesterday’s mass shooting at a Texas elementary school, issued the following statement about gun violence and the tragedy of performative action: “Yesterday’s mass shooting tragically reminds us of the need to meaningfully address the crisis of gun violence in our nation. Nineteen students and two teachers were murdered, and more civilians were injured because of an individual’s access to a deadly firearm and his intention to kill.

Black Real Estate Professionals Recruit Black Appraisers to Combat Bias, Declare War on Black Homeownership Gap

(TriceEdneyWire.com) When a former client of leading Black real estate broker Donnell Williams was about to get his house refinanced in Wharton, New Jersey, Williams quoted him as asking, “‘Should I have my White friend come over and open up the door for the appraiser?’”

Williams, a realtor for 30 years and broker for 21 years, is well aware that his former client’s perception of racism within the real estate industry is indeed a reality. Current media stories are full of reports of people who have had to conceal their racial identities – going as far as to hide family photos and cultural art - in order to get a fair and equitable appraisal of their home.

It is for this reason and many others that the Black Real Estate Professionals Alliance (BREPA.org) of which Williams is president, has joined with the Appraisal Institute (AI). Together, BREPA and AI are launching a trailblazing program to recruit and train at least “100 Black Appraisers in 100 Days”. This is a new initiative aimed at

bringing parity to the field of appraising. BREPA is teaming with AI’s “Appraisal Diversity Initiative.”

Here are the facts: • According to The Appraisal Institute, a global professional association of real estate appraisers, there are 78,000 appraisers in the U. S. which includes 85.4 percent White appraisers, but only 1.3 percent African-Americans.

• According to the White House, which also recently announced a new anti-bias initiative for appraisals, “New research shows that mis-valuation in communities of color is widespread. A recent report from Freddie Mac found that appraisals for home purchases in majority-Black and majority-Latino neighborhoods were roughly twice as likely to result in a value below the actual contract price (the amount a buyer is willing to pay for the property), compared to appraisals in predominantly white neighborhoods.”

• According to a report by the Washington Post, there is currently no federal database for discrimination in appraisals. However, states across the nation - including New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois - are

beginning to explore ways to penalize those who traffic in racial discrimination in appraisals through legislations or the courts.

• As with all systemic racial disparities, this bias also directly impacts generational wealth building for the Black community. The National Urban League reports that the median White family holds eight times the wealth of the typical Black family and five times the wealth of the typical Latino family.

With several new initia-

tives, Williams, former president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), has declared war on the homeownership gap experienced by communities of color. According to the U.S. Census, as of the second quarter of last year, the Black homeownership rate was 44.6 percent compared to 74.2 percent for Whites, according to NAREB’s State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) report. That is a gap of 29.6 percent - larger than the 27 percent gap that existed “in 1960, before the Civil Rights movement and Fair Housing laws,” the SHIBA report said.

Williams hopes that the launch of his initiatives will help close the gap, thereby help to realize the highest homeownership rate in years for first time buyers. Civil rights organizations that deal with economic justice issues agree that the appraisal bias issue is a key to bringing parity.

“The National Urban League has long recognized racial bias in home and property appraisals as a barrier to Black homeownership and generational wealth building,” said Marc H. Morial, NUL president/CEO. “Through our work as one of the nation’s largest providers of housing counseling assistance to communities of color, we know all too well that this type of discrimination has gone on for too long and in plain sight.”

Williams, former president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, contends that providing scholarships (which will differ from state to state), helping to facilitate the required 2,000 apprentice hours, and the full and final licensing of more African-American appraisers, will provide African-American homeowners with a sense of certitude in the appraisal process.

Williams also stresses that 100 Black Appraisers in 100 Days will not only provide Black homeowners, in particular, with greater confidence in the appraisal process, but will also create jobs in the Black community that pay a living wage with salaries that can range from $57,000-$147,000 a year. Together, these actions will serve to increase Black home ownership and help close the wealth gap, Williams says.

Dozens across the country have already signed up for the opportunity to become an appraiser on BREPA.org. One potential apprentice, Candis

Pressley of Philadelphia, is a seasoned real estate broker of 23 years. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in real estate and says she simply loves the business. However, she too has run into racially biased appraisers.

Candis recalls finalizing a contract where her client was the lessee and the appraiser was asking for proof of her authority to sign the lease. “Really, in my 23 years of doing this, I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said. “I felt it was racial bias from the appraiser and what they were asking.

And it really encouraged me that this is a much-needed program.”

The mother of a 10-yearold son, Pressley says she has already begun teaching him about real estate and she hopes to see him in the business someday with “generational wealth” that can be continually passed down.

“It’s always been the case of a Caucasian person coming into our properties telling us what the value is,” says Bill Collins, communications liaison for the Black Real Estate Professionals Alliance. “This initiative is going to change that. Now you will have someone who looks like us who hopefully will be level-headed enough after they go through these apprenticeships to do a fair job for the consumer. Let’s also keep in mind that this is not just about them doing a fair job for those who look like us but being able to work in the industry at large.”

Collins states one of the reasons more African-Americans do not seek to become appraisers is “because of the gatekeepers. It’s hard to get mentorships even if you meet the qualifications. Then they want you to have a bachelor’s degree. Then you have to put in so many apprentice hours.

It’s a good ole boy network we can’t get in to do those training hours.”

Advocates in the field of homeownership agree that more Black appraisers will assist in remedying the issue of appraisal bias.

In a recent column, Charlene Crowell, a senior fellow with the Center for Responsible Lending, quoted The Urban Institute: “Appraiser bias has likely played a role in homeownership and housing wealth outcomes, and increasing diversity in the field can diminish this bias in the long term.”

Recipe courtesy of the Georgia Peanut Commission 1 tablespoon minced ginger 6 cloves garlic, crushed 2 cups creamy peanut butter 1 cup chicken broth 2 tablespoons light soy sauce 1 tablespoon chili oil 1/2 tablespoon lime juice 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast 1 1/2 pounds pork tenderloin In mixing bowl, combine ginger, garlic, peanut butter, broth, soy sauce, chili oil, lime juice, honey and cilantro. Mix well and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Cut chicken and pork into strips and thread onto skewers. In non-metal container, marinate meat in half of peanut butter sauce 1-2 hours in refrigerator. Reserve remaining sauce for dipping.

Heat oven to broil

Broil skewered meats until done, turning once. In pot, bring remaining sauce to boil and serve warm as dipping sauce.

fresh orange or mandarin juice, for garnish crispy fried shallots, for garnish crumbled French feta, for garnish chopped fresh mint, for garnish Preheat air fryer to 400 F. Lightly brush Brussels sprouts with peanut oil and place in fryer basket. Cook 10-15 minutes, shaking halfway through.

In small bowl, whisk peanut butter, water, champagne vinegar, honey, chipotle chili powder and 1 pinch salt until well combined.

Once cooked, remove Brussels sprouts from air fryer and place in bowl. Toss in chipotle peanut vinaigrette until well combined. Season with salt, to taste.

Garnish with orange segments, orange juice, crispy fried shallots, feta and mint.

1 cup old-fashioned oats 2 1/2 cups water 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons chunky peanut butter 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 tablespoons raisins 1 banana, sliced 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup milk 2 teaspoons maple syrup In medium saucepan, combine oats, water and salt.

Bring to boil then reduce heat to medium. Cook 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and add peanut butter. Stir until peanut butter melts.

Add brown sugar, raisins, banana, cinnamon and vanilla extract; stir.

Divide oatmeal into two bowls. Top each bowl with 1/4 cup milk and 1 teaspoon maple syrup.

Lincoln Highway, Ford Heights NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN by the Board of Directors of Cornerstone Community Development Corporation , Cook County, Illinois, that the sealed bids will be received for the following improvements: Public Facility Parking Lot Reconstruction Said bids will be received up to the hour of 3:00pm. Central Standard Time, on the 2nd day of

June 2022, at the Cornerstone Community Development Corporation located at 943 E. Lincoln Highway, Ford Heights, IL and will publicly be opened and read at that time. The bidding forms and documents are available at the office of Cornerstone Community Development Corporation , 943 E. Sections 76-276a-5), and shall receive overtime compensation in accordance with and subject to the provisions of the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act (40 U.S.C. Sections 327-333), and the Contractor and Subcontractor(s) shall comply with all regulations issued pursuant to these Acts and other applicable Federal laws and regulations pertaining to labor standards. All contracts and Subrecipients for the construction or repair shall include a provision for compliance with the Copeland "Anti-Kick Act" {18 U.S.C. Section 874) as supplemented in Department of Labor Regulations {29 CFR Part 3). Each bidder is required to comply with Equal Employment Opportunity for the Community Development Block Grants, a copy of which is on file with Cornerstone Community Development Corporation and is available for inspection. Compliance with "Section 3", which calls for affirmative action by the Contractor to train and/hire lower income residents of the Project area and to subcontract with local, small businesses is required on this Project. An explanation of the applicable federal requirements previously mentioned is provided in the Special Provisions of the Bid Specifications. The successful bidder for the construction of the improvement will be required to file a performance bond equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Executive Director of, which performance bonds shall be conditioned upon proper and faithful performance by the Contractor of the work specified in accordance with the plans and specifications therefore, according to the time and terms and conditions of the contract and also that the bidder and contactor shall properly pay all debts incurred by the Contractor in the execution of the work, including those for labor and materials furnished. The Contractor shall be required to furnish sufficient insurance or guaranty of indemnity to the Cornerstone Community Development Corporation , 943 E.
