CELEBRATION FEATURES 2,300 GRADUATES The entire graduating Class of 2018 from Noble’s 17 charter public high schools across Chicago gathered downtown recently to celebrate their 98% college acceptance rate and $474 million in scholarships earned.

Graduates included 70 DREAMers being awarded scholarships, 300 students headed to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, 300 students to the University of Illinois at Chicago, and more than 100 students attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

MOST EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS REPORT HOSPITALS NOT “FULLY PREPARED” FOR DISASTERS Nine in 10 emergency physicians responding to a new poll say that in the past month, they have experienced shortages or absences of critical medicines in their emergency departments. In addition, nearly all (93 percent of 247 doctors) say their emergency departments are not “fully prepared” for patient surge capacity in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, or mass-casualty incident, with 49 percent saying they are “somewhat” prepared, according to the poll conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

“These results demonstrate why there needs to be a much stronger focus on the medical aspects of preparedness in the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2018 [PAHPAI] that is currently being drafted,” said Paul Kivela, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “Hospitals and emergency medical services continue to suffer significant gaps in disaster preparedness, as well as national drug shortages for essential emergency medications. These shortages can last for months, or longer, and constitute a significant risk to patients. Emergency physicians are concerned that our system cannot even meet daily demands, let alone during a medical surge for a natural or man-made disaster.”

POLICE REMOVE MORE THAN 100 MCDONALD’S WORKERS FROM ILLINOIS STATEHOUSE More than 100 McDonald’s cooks and cashiers were physically removed by Capitol police from a protest at the Illinois statehouse recently as the Fight for $15 joined forces with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in nonviolent direct action.

Carrying signs reading “Black Workers Matter, McDonald’s” and chanting “We Believe That We Will Win,” workers in McDonald’s uniforms were carried away along with activists, clergy and community leaders following a two-hour sit-in at the governor’s office and the legislative chambers. The nonviolent direct action against systemic racism was part of a wave of Poor People’s Campaign protests that hit 35 state capitals and Washington, D.C. The Fight for $15 has built deep ties with civil rights groups and leaders over the past five years. U.S. Rep. John Lewis joined Atlanta fast-food workers on a strike line in August 2013, encouraging them to, “Keep walking, keep marching, keep talking, keep pushing.” In the summer of 2014, the NAACP passed a resolution backing the Fight for $15. In the winter of 2015, Memphis sanitation workers who participated in the 1968 strike implored a gathering of fast-food workers at Dr. King’s church in Atlanta to keep fighting for $15 and union rights; and diverse group of faith leaders have echoed the workers’ moral argument for dignity on the job.

ori Lightfoot, former president of the Chicago Police Board, recently announced that she will join the race for Mayor of Chicago. While Lightfoot is still working to develop detailed proposals to steer her campaign, she has identified building strong neighborhoods, violence, and financial reform across the city as the pillars of her campaign.

“I just fundamentally came to believe that the city is going in the wrong direction,” said Lightfoot about why she decided to run for mayor. “Both in my experience and in talking to people from different regions of the city, it became clear that a new direction was needed and so that led me to think seriously about what role I could play to have maximum impact and try to make a difference in the quality of lives of individuals, families, and neighborhoods.”

Encouraging equity and inclusion across the city will steer and support Lightfoot’s vision for Chicago.

“My vision of Chicago starts with one in which equity and inclusion are our north stars. Where we get rid of the ‘us vs. them’ style of governance. If we are united in a common purpose to put a progressive course for the city, we are going to be able to accomplish amazing things,” said Lightfoot.

Building strong neighborhoods in Chicago is one of Lightfoot’s most comprehensive goals. Neighborhoods are her way of addressing several issues at once by pushing for small www.thechicagocitizen.com

businesses and neighborhood schools to see investments which will result in an increase in employment and a reduction in violence.

“I’m very focused on making sure that we have a plan to uplift families and neighborhoods. You can look at it from any measure that you can think of whether its the number of kids living in poverty, the structural unemployment that we see that is generational, the absence of a real plan for small business development in the neighborhoods, the fact that we have food deserts, medical deserts, pharmacy deserts, the list is long,” said Lightfoot. “All of these components and more play a role in being able to have stable neighborhoods and if you have stable neighborhoods the violence won’t be at the historically high levels we have now.”

A common theme across all of Lightfoot’s ideas is that Chicago needs a better plan. While she admits there is no magic solution to fix the city’s current problems, there is a way to be more proactive.

Lightfoot said that she will hire and empower a risk manager for Chicago because, like any other multi-billiondollar operation, she believes there should be a person who is responsible for identifying and mitigating risks.

“We have got to have these plans in place, we have to have the right personnel in place, and fundamentally we need a leader who sees these challenges as opportunities and offers hope and solutions,” said Lightfoot. “We have world-class talent all over the city and what we need is a leader who recognizes that and brings people together to help solve the challenges.”

Airbnb’s Home Sharing Business Model Makes its Impact in Illinois

‘S

hare and share alike’ may be an old adage, but new technology and innovations like Airbnb’s home sharing business model is having a positive impact on communities who like to share.

In Illinois, residents earned about $90 million in supplemental income through Airbnb in 2017,” said Ben Breit, Airbnb Chicago public affairs manager. And while many of the college commencement ceremonies in Illinois are now over, Airbnb continues to capitalize on the college market from graduations yet to come.

During Northwestern University’s June 22 Commencement located in Evanston, Airbnb released data showing a total host Income of $55,000, representing figures just for that period. On the other end of town at the University of Chicago’s upcoming June 9th Commencement (specifically in the Hyde Park neighborhood), Airbnb is reporting a total host income of $50,000.

Supplemental income for a typical host during Northwestern’s Commencement is $311 while in the Hyde Park neighborhood, the supplemental income for a typical host during the University of Chicago’s Commencement is a reported $256.

In a new development, Northwestern

University, Airbnb and the city of Evanston recently announced an agreement authorizing the platform to collect the Evanston Hotel/ Motel Tax on behalf of its hosts and remit the revenue to the city.

Airbnb also collects the Illinois hotel tax on all Airbnb bookings, remitting the revenue directly to the state.

During special events like graduations, Airbnb maintains that the company offers parents an affordable and convenient choice.

Rather than paying pricey hotel rates and having to travel miles to the graduation’s venue, an Airbnb host may be a short distance away from the event, all at an affordable cost.

As a strong opponent of hotel price gouging, the company addressed the issue in a recent report saying, while Airbnb is saving millions for consumers, the hotel industry relies on pricegouging in order to its boost profits.

In Part I of the report called, Airbnb: Fighting Hotel Price-Gouging, Saving Millions for Consumers and according to UBS​, hotels make anywhere from 35 percent to 70 percent more revenue per available room increasing prices on the so-called “compression nights,” and ​Reuters​noted that they contribute 25 percent to 30 percent to hotels’ annual profits.”

While the company is making its presence known in Illinois’ college market, seniors

are also cashing in. “In Chicago, we see a significant number of seniors turning to Airbnb to help supplement their retirements or fixed incomes,” Breit added. “Chicago seniors earn the most income, host most often and get the best ratings of any other host demographic in the city,” he said.

“We have also met quite a few Chicago hosts who use their Airbnb income in order to fund their own non-profits,” Breit continued. “Some, including a few hosts from Englewood, host in order to dispel stereotypes about their neighborhoods and shine a positive light. But overall, the narrative we hear most often from hosts is that they share their homes in order to help pay the bills and make ends meet.”

In 2017, Airbnb and the NAACP launched a landmark partnership designed to help spread the economic benefits of home sharing to more communities.

Under the partnership, Airbnb and the NAACP agreed to conduct targeted outreach to communities of color to help more people use their homes to earn extra income.

By increasing the number of travelers to communities of color, one of the the goals of the partnership is to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

The partnership includes a unique revenue sharing model: Airbnb will share 20 percent

of its earnings from this partnership with the NAACP. The NAACP and Airbnb are also collaborating on a series of projects to support Airbnb’s ongoing efforts to increase workforce diversity, as well as to support Airbnb’s supplier diversity goals.

In Chicago, Breit said the company is seeing the, “fastest growth on the West Side and South Side,” of the city. “These are areas of the city that by and large do not have any hotels and therefore have not traditionally been able to take advantage of the economic benefits of tourism,” he added.

“We are hopeful to catalyze that positive economic impact. When guests are able to stay and authentically experience neighborhoods on the South Side and West Side, that’s obviously helpful income for the hosts, but there’s also a trickle-down effect for neighborhood merchants and small businesses who benefit from the additional foot traffic,” said Breit.

The success of Airbnb’s business model is also benefiting the homeless. Fifty percent of Airbnb tax revenue in Chicago funds homeless support services administered by the city, which added up to $2.9 million in 2017.

Outside of Chicago, Breit said, cities where the company is seeing a, “really positive impact of home sharing include Rockford, Carbondale, Champaign/Urbana and Peoria.”

A Healthy Diet isn’t Always Possible for Low-Income Americans, Even When They Get SNAP Benefits

hile researching how hard it is for low-income Americans to eat healthy on tight budgets, I’ve often found a mismatch between what people want to eat and the diet they can afford to follow. This made me wonder what eating right costs and how much of this tab gets covered by the largest federal nutrition program, commonly

known as SNAP or food stamps. To find out, I teamed up with Kranti Mulik, an agricultural economist.

MYPLATE AND SNAP We based our nutrition assumptions on MyPlate, the federal government’s dietary guidelines, which account for differences according to age and gender. The guidelines spell out what you should eat from five food groups: fruits, vegetables,

grains, dairy and protein – including meat, beans, eggs, tofu and other soybased products, nuts and seeds.

SNAP benefits also vary, based on household income and how many eligible people live in a given household. These modest benefits, which average about US$1.40 per meal, reduce the number of people who would otherwise go hungry Continued on page 5

80 US Communities to Fight Local Hunger with Bees NEW YORK – The Honeybee Conservancy

has announced the selection of 80 community organizations from across the United States to benefit from their successful Sponsor-A-Hive program. The program provides underserved communities with bees, bee homes, supplies, and educational support to advance bee conservation and fight hunger by empowering communities to establish sustainable agricultural resources within their neighborhoods.

Bees are essential for the pollination of so much of the food Americans eat. Guillermo Fernandez, Director of The Honeybee Conservancy notes, “One in three bites of food we eat depends entirely on bees—and they are dying out. Bees inhabit the juncture where sustainability, science, and the local food movement intersect.”

The Sponsor-A-Hive Program has worked to combat this decline by creating 165 bee sanctuaries since its inception in 2015, introducing millions of pollinators to US communities. Organizations such as the

University of Montana, New Jersey’s Greater Newark Conservatory, and Washington’s Center for Self Reliance have received not only bees, beekeeping equipment, curriculum and resources, but also guidance from Honeybee Conservancy experts whose ongoing support helps organizations place and sustain bee homes to ensure their long-term success.

The 2018 Sponsor-A-Hive Program participants represent a wide variety of nonprofit community organizations, including schools, Native American tribes, nature centers, neighborhood parks, food banks, museums, and more. Strategic Wealth Partners Celebrates Ten Years of Service

T

en years ago, an economic tsunami was brewing. An overheated real estate market was cooling off and subprime mortgage defaults were piling up. Before the end of September ’08, the Dow Jones Industrial Average would plummet more than 777 points, the most in any single day in history.

A Monday morning quarterback might say 2008 was not the best year to launch a wealth management firm.

But for David Copeland and Neal Price, there was no turning back. The two partners had put everything on the line to start their own investment advisory and financial planning firm. On May 16, 2008, Strategic Wealth Partners of Deerfield, Illinois opened its doors.

Ten years later, Copeland and Price sit in a conference room at Strategic Wealth Partners offices near downtown Deerfield, sharing stories about the early days. The bond forged between the two in the trenches of financial battle is evident. Through the closed door, the hum of a busy office can be heard. A decade earlier, the firm had started with five people, 175 clients and around $450 million assets under management. Today, 30 professionals provide investment advisory services and support to approximately 600 clients* across the country. There is now a second office in Milwaukee. At more than $2.6 billion in assets under advisement*, assets have more than quintupled. Clients of the firm typically have investable assets between $2 million and $100 million.

Did the pair have misgivings during

those tumultuous months of 2008 and 2009? “Do you mean hourly or daily,” laughs Copeland. “We created business plans and financial models and then Dave would cut my financial models drastically,” says Price. “I would say, ‘that’s so draconian. That could never happen.’ But even Dave’s worst-case scenario wasn’t as bad as what happened.”

“No one could see the bottom,” adds Copeland.

THE RIGHT BUSINESS MODEL Just how the firm survived, and then thrived, in ensuing years is a fascinating study. The two North Shore area residents are quick to admit that the 2008 trial by fire was the ultimate test of their business model. They were determined to build a model in which the firm would not accept commissions. Firms that operate on commission-based fee structures can affect a manager’s objectivity and influence the advice provided to clients. They wanted Strategic Wealth Partners to offer independent, feebased advisory services and to truly embrace the concept of being a fiduciary to their clients.

“We knew that we had the opportunity to

develop something we both felt very strongly about and felt there was demand for what we wanted to build,” says Copeland. “I knew if I were a client, I would want to work with an independent advisory firm that didn’t have ties to investment banking, corporate finance, a trading desk, or to any other parts of financial services where conflicts are evident.” Price adds, “I give credit for our success to our clients. We firmly believed we were doing the right thing for our clients, and our clients validated that.”

As part of their vision to do what’s best for the client, they created a business model based on collaboration, not competition. “Unlike many large investment houses, we don’t compete against each other,” says Copeland.

“Here, everyone works together. That’s a major reason for our success.”

Copeland points out that collaboration allows his team to benefit from shared perspectives on the same topic. “Because clients work with multiple team members, they receive a more customized solution,” he notes.

PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY Ask what makes them most proud and the conversation turns towards the firm’s staff. “I’m most gratified to be part of a firm that provides good jobs for 28 people,” says Price. “I give credit for our success to our staff. There are very few firms that deliver the kind of service we do. Our highly customized approach is somewhat inefficient; it’s a lot of hard work and involves a lot of heavy lifting. Our team bends over backwards for clients every day.”

Those same staff members are also very active in their community. Strategic Wealth Partners staff volunteer for a range of civic and charitable organizations including Jewish United Fund (JUF), Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS), Open Heart Magic, and Froedtert Community Memorial Hospital. “We strongly encourage our team to be engaged in the community,” says Price. “That really is a core part of our success. You don’t join a board or organization because you think it’s good for business. You do it because it’s the right thing to do for the community.”

THE NEXT TEN YEARS Ten successful years have given the partners the opportunity to think about the next ten years. “We don’t expect – or want – to be a household name with a big billboard out there,” says Copeland. “We want to continue to build a solid reputation for integrity, objectivity, hands-on service and reliability. We believe this will increase our credibility in the region and attract clients to our firm.”

Today, much of Strategic Wealth Partners’ attention is focused on succession-planning and developing the firm’s next generation of leaders to serve the next generation of clients. “From day one, we set out to create something that was going to be around a lot longer than the two of us,” says Price. “It was one of the reasons we didn’t put our name on the door. We wanted to build a firm with the ability to create success for our clients and hopefully, for their kids and grandkids - long beyond the time that we’re going to be here.”

A Healthy Diet isn’t Always Possible for Low-Income Americans, Even When They Get SNAP Benefits Continued from page 3 at the end of each month by nearly 30 percent, according to Urban Institute economist Caroline Ratcliffe.

MEAL ACCOUNTING Conversations around healthy eating often leave out cooking time. But to estimate the monthly shortfall for people living in economic hardship who get SNAP benefits, we took into account not just grocery prices and SNAP benefits but the effort eating home-prepared meals requires.

This includes traveling to stores and shopping for ingredients, as well as prepping, cooking and serving meals and cleaning up afterwards. To estimate this value, economists have used the average U.S. hourly wage rate, multiplying it by the time it takes to prepare meals. They find that labor is worth 40 percent of what

Americans spend on food that they eat at home.

For people who rely on SNAP benefits, the labor costs can be daunting. They may not live close to supermarkets or any stores that sell produce. They might not own cars and lack access to transit, and they might lack the basic cooking equipment needed to prepare meals.

The government does not officially bill SNAP as covering everything that beneficiaries spend on food – that’s why the word supplemental is part of the program’s name. In 2016, however, it estimated that Americans could afford to feed a family of four a healthy diet for as little as $588 a month – less than the $649 that a family of four can get at most in SNAP benefits. Remember, this amount excludes the labor of preparing meals.

We calculate that it would take about $1,100 per month, including labor, to keep food on this hypothetical family’s table.

According to our calculations, SNAP covers about half – between 43 and 60 percent – of what following a MyPlate diet costs after taking into account the labor required for meal preparation.

For households that purchase only fresh produce, grains, dairy and meat, this shortfall is much bigger than for those buying canned, frozen fruits and vegetables. Serving a meal of freshly steamed broccoli, whole-wheat pasta and roast chicken costs more than heating up canned diced tomatoes and red beans to eat with white rice.

Besides, many breadwinners who have to stretch their food dollars work multiple jobs or have other constraints on their time. For them, every hour spent on meal preparation can amount to an hour’s worth of pay lost. $600 MORE PER MONTH Based on our model, we found that a

family of four with two adults and two teens or tweens would need to spend more than $600 per month in addition to their SNAP benefits, if they ate only fresh produce, grains, meat and dairy.

That same household would need to spend almost $500 more than the maximum SNAP benefits if they ate a vegetarian diet with a mix of fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables – and derived their protein from tofu and other soy-based products, beans, eggs, nuts and seeds.

Even excluding the labor it takes to put food on the table, that family would need to spend at least $200 monthly on top of its members’ SNAP benefits to consume a healthy diet.

Project Hero is a national nonprofit organization that helps veterans and first responders affected by injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury achieve rehabilitation, recovery and resilience in their daily lives.
