EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS ANNOUNCES 2019 CLASS OF FELLOWS Equal Justice Works, the nation’s largest facilitator of opportunities in public interest law, recently named its 2019 Class of Equal Justice Works Fellows. Seventy-six recent law school graduates will launch their careers through an Equal Justice Works Fellowship project of their own design.

Each year, Equal Justice Works selects a class of passionate public service leaders who have designed projects in partnership with legal services organizations that help build sustainable solutions in the communities where they serve. The projects are funded by the generous support of law firms, corporations, foundations, and individuals. Many of the law firms and corporate legal departments leverage their sponsorship to increase engagement and service through pro bono support.

Over the past three decades, Equal Justice Works has awarded more than 2,000 Fellowships to lawyers committed to public service.

The Chicago Community Trust recently organized its annual On The Table conversations with this year’s focus on creating a Memo to the Mayor.

On The Table events were held across the city and the goal of each discussion was to identify community needs that Chicago’s newly elected mayor, Lori Lightfoot, and her administration should know about.

On The Table is a daylong civic conversation that takes place at various locations across the city and includes thousands of people. All of this year’s events were held on May 14 and hosted by both individuals and organizations.

This year, an On the Table conversation was hosted by Girls Like Me Project, Inc. at the Studio Movie Grill in Chatham.

Girls Like Me Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that works with Black girls who are 11 to 16 years old and empowers them to overcome the negative stereotypes they face and take control of their own narrative through digital-storytelling.

“We hold a fundamental belief that black girls specifically are unfortunately targeted by negative stereotypes, negative stigma, and just messages that are very devaluing to their self-worth and their ambitions. Also on the flip side, we know that if the girls have self-advocacy and the proper tools then they can reclaim their narrative in the media and learn how to use media as a tool for global sisterhood,” said LaKeisha Gray-Sewell, founder and CEO of Girls Like Me, Inc.

The organization provides workshops, training programs, and summer camps for young black girls and they are currently preparing for their free D.I.V.A.S. in the City summer camp which will train girls in media literacy and digital storytelling.

“Digital storytelling is when the students can take the media tools they have at their disposal to share stories that they don’t usually see themselves portrayed as doing in the media. The things that are positive like starting a garden, working to gather to keep each other safe,” said Gray-Sewell.

Because the organization has a heavy focus on digital media, they chose to focus their On The Table Conversation on recent negative media coverage of a large group of Black teens who visited downtown Chicago over spring break and the public response to it.

“Young people deserve to explore

the city, first of all, and young people deserve for adults to be responsible for providing them with the resources that they need,” said Gray Sewell. “The average young person needs direction and needs to be guided.”

The conversation explored how public perception can effect the resources and opportunities that black teens have and how the city could benefit from supporting and organizing Black teenagers.

“This conversation was a reflection, an admonishment, and an opportunity for us to really explore what we owe young people and what they already have to give. Five hundred young people mobilizing just from social media is incredible and that’s a missed opportunity. If they can organize each other, it is a missed opportunity if we don’t direct that energy to something positive,” said Gray Sewell.

Chicago Software Developer Sentenced to Prison for Fraudulently Obtaining Federal Grant Money A Chicago software developer has been sentenced to three months in federal prison for fraudulently obtaining $200,000 in grant funds from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation.

Miroslav Velev, a mathematician with a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering, operated the Chicago-based software development and consulting company Aries Design Automation LLC, which developed methods to solve electronic design automation problems.

Velev sought and obtained federal grant funds for his company through the Small Business Innovation Re-

search program, which provides opportunities for small businesses to participate in federally-sponsored research and development. Aries was awarded a total of $200,000 in grants from NASA and the NSF after Velev made materially false representations about the company’s financial condition.

Velev, 50, of Chicago, pleaded guilty last year to one count of conversion of government funds, a misdemeanor. U.S. District Judge Gary Feinerman recently sentenced Velev to three months in federal prison.

Velev previously paid restitution of $150,000 to NASA and $50,000 to the NSF. “Absent Velev’s fraud and false statements, his pro-

posals would not have been approved and he would not have been awarded federal funds,” Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Hogan, Jr., argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum.

“By intentionally deceiving the government, Velev personally benefitted at the expense of another eligible small business, and at the expense of the taxpayers who funded the SBIR program.”

The SBIR program required applicant companies to show independent, third-party investments or commitments of investments in their projects.

Velev admitted in a plea agreement that he falsely represented to NASA and the NSF that Aries

had received the required independent investment from an individual investor.

Velev fraudulently submitted in his grant proposals a screenshot of his company’s bank account that reflected a funds transfer from the purported investor. In reality, the investor did not exist, and Velev had routed his own money into the account to support the false appearance of an investment.

Velev also submitted in his grant proposals an “investment letter” that identified a Chief Financial Officer for the purported investor. In fact, the alleged CFO was an acquaintance of Velev’s wife and had no connection with an investment in Aries.

After taking the oath of office which was administered by the Honorable Susan Cox, Magistrate Judge, U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois, Lightfoot gave her inaugural address where she laid out her plans to prioritize public safety, education, accountability, and integrity in the city over the next four years.

“I stand as your Mayor, humble and hopeful.

I am honored to be the 56th Mayor of this great city. We are a proud city with a proud history and in this moment I can’t help but think about all of you and what lies ahead and what we can be together,” said Lightfoot in the opening remarks of her inaugural address.

Lightfoot went on to share her broad vision for the City of Chicago which includes making Chicago a trauma-informed city, improving public safety, repairing the city’s mental health system, and strengthening the neighborhood school network.

and strong schools for every child regardless of neighborhood or zip code. A city where people want to grow old and not flee. A city of sanctuary against fear where no one must hide in the shadows. A city that is affordable for

families and seniors and where every job pays a minimum wage. A city of fairness, hope, and prosperity for the many and not just for a few.

A city that holds equity and inclusion as our guiding principals,” said Lightfoot.

During her inaugural address, Lightfoot announced that her administration would create a Mayor’s Office of Public Safety that will be led by a deputy mayor and responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive violence prevention strategy across the city.

“While we will specifically address the gun violence, our efforts will not stop there,” said Lightfoot.” We will reach out and support the growing community of victims and witnesses.

We must recognize the importance of providing transition for our returning citizens and we will accelerate the development of our trauma-informed city by starting with repairing our broken mental health safety net.”

In addition to Lightfoot being sworn into office, City Clerk Anna Valencia and City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, and all 50 Alderman also took an oath of office during the 2019 Inaugural Ceremony.

“For the first time in the history of Chicago, women of color now hold all three city-wide elected offices. I congratulate you City Clerk Anna Valencia and City Treasurer Mellissa Conyears-Ervin on your inauguration, your victories, and all you’ve done and overcome to reach this historic moment,” said Lightfoot.

Following the Inauguration Ceremony, Mayor Lightfoot along with her wife, First Lady Amy Eshleman, hosted a public open house at City Hall.

Civic Leader Mentors Help Youth With “Career Talks” At Recent Event The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) recently partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters Metropolitan Chicago (BBBS) at the second annual “Career Talks” event at Gary Comer Youth Center on Chicago’s South Side.

The goal of the event was to introduce Comer students to a wide range of professions and encourage them to aim high. The students joined the civic leaders - dubbed “Career Champions” in small group discussions, asking questions and getting advice on their future paths.

“These events are important in building the self-esteem and confidence of young people,” said CHA CEO Eugene E. Jones Jr. “Big Brothers Big Sisters was a big influence in my life, and I am hoping the Comer students get the same fulfillment that I did. There were productive, engaging conversations between the Career Champions and the students.”

state of Illinois’ Treasurer’s office at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. The pitch night will be held in NEIU’s Lech Walesa Hall, in lecture hall 1002, and is open to the general public.

The age 50+ demographic is not what most people envision when thinking about entrepreneur pitch nights. Yet, entrepreneurs age 50+ are the most successful new business launch category. Based upon a study of U.S. Census Bureau data, Kauffman Foundation researchers found that people aged 50+ are the fastest growing category of new entrepreneurs, and instead of having the 75 percent to 80 percent first-year failure rates experienced by new businesses overall, for entrepreneurs aged 50+, 75 percent are still in business by Year 3, have $1+ million in revenue, and have created jobs for an average of five employees.
