ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS RELEASES MODEL SEXUAL HARASSMENT PREVENTION TRAINING PROGRAM The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) recently released its model Sexual Harassment Prevention Training program for Illinois employers in compliance with Public Act 1010221 (commonly referred to as the Workplace Transparency Act).

Formerly Senate Bill 75, Public Act 101-0221 was signed into law by Governor Pritzker in August 2019.

Under this Act, Illinois employers are required to train employees on sexual harassment prevention

by December 31, 2020, and on an annual basis thereafter. This requirement applies to all employers with employees working in the state.

Employers must either develop their own sexual harassment prevention training program that equals or exceeds the minimum standards for sexual harassment prevention training outlined in Section 2-109(B) of the Illinois Human Rights Act (IHRA), or they may use the model training provided by the IDHR. Melissa Conyears-Ervin, treasurer of the city of Chicago, began her “Money Mondays with Melissa” webinar on Monday, May 4, as a way to inform residents and provide resources during COVID-19.

“There has been so much focus on physical health during this pandemic, which physical health is the most important [thing] during a time such as this because COVID-19 directly attacks [a person’s] physical health, but one of the challenges we have also seen, is that we need financial wellness,” she said.

Conyears-Ervin said as city treasurer, she is the sole custodian of taxpayers’ dollars and her role is to protect taxpayers’ dollars.

She said in order to protect their money, first, she had to protect the taxpayers themselves. And, that is why she wanted to create the webinar series. It will take place each Monday in May, at noon.

There are so many resources available to residents, as well as small businesses, including things like additional unemployment benefits, additional SNAP benefits, stimulus checks, grants for businesses and loans for businesses, that Conyears-Ervin said she wanted to address topics like what bills to pay and which bills to possibly pay first.

Things of that sort will keep taxpayers from going into a financial hole, she said, and may prevent them from having to deal with a larger burden once the crisis is over.

For the first webinar, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Amanda Carney, co-founder and president of Working Credit, were guests on the show.

During the webinar, Preckwinkle talked about the Cook County Community Recovery Initiative, which is aimed at providing rapid relief loans, technical assistance and outreach for suburban small businesses.

“We’ve tried to figure out ways in which we can support small businesses,” Preckwinkle said. “We have to do whatever we can to help small businesses because we know they’re the backbone.”

Conyears-Ervin said Preckwinkle covered, and quite extensively, the resources available in Chicago and in Cook County. Her participation was “great” Conyears-Ervin added, especially since some suburban businesses have really been

hurt by the pandemic. Preckwinkle also spoke about independent contractors and the resources that are available to them, she said.

During the webinar, Carney said even though people have limited resources, this crisis is different from other recessions in the past.

“Creditors now are trying to actively work with people,” she said. “Pay your credit card and loan payments,” she advised. “These bills get reported to the credit bureau.”

Conyears-Ervin said that Carney’s Working Credit is a not for profit organization, so she thought it would be beneficial to have Carney on the webinar.

“They are truly in the business of helping consumers and not for their own benefit,” she said.

Other guests included John Hope Bryant, chief executive officer of Operation Hope, an organization focused on uplifting the community by providing financial dignity and economic empowerment, things Conyears-Ervin said she’s also trying to instill in the community through the webinars.

“That’s another reason why I started this ‘Money Monday with Melissa’ because we truly want financial empowerment in all 77 communities of Chicago and we know that there’s disparity. It’s almost like financial well-being can be a hidden secret and I don’t want it to be that way,” she said. One of the goals of the webinar is to make certain that resources and information are available to Chicagoans everywhere, Conyears-Ervin said.

Before the pandemic, “we needed to talk about financial wellness,” she added, but during the pandemic, it’s an even more “urgent matter.”

Entrepreneurs Create Unique Face Masks For Small Businesses During COVID-19 Pandemic

There’s no question the COVID-19 pandemic has crippled Chicago’s economy, especially when it comes to small businesses, which is why two South Side entrepreneurs are now working together to produce unique facemasks.

Derryl Caldwell and Delvin McCray, both have offices in the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St., both are members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and both have a unique skillset that now allows them to expand their services to include facemasks production for black-owned businesses.

“The facemasks idea came about after I had a conversation with the president of Seaway Bank, who pushed me to expand my craft and design facemasks for small businesses,” contends Caldwell, a 51-year-old Hyde Park resident and founder of DC Mad Hatter, a customer embroidery company. “I do the embroidery portion and Delvin does the manufacturing. I bank at Seaway, so I talk to Mr. Newell all the time.”

were talking on the phone about the COVID-19 situation and how hard it was to get facemasks. That’s when the two men started talking about how Caldwell could expand his custom embroidery business by including facemasks along with the hats and t-shirts he was already designing.

Newell said he and Caldwell also talked about some of the flaws found

in cloth facemasks already on the market and how they were either too expensive or tore up in the washing machine. And that’s when Newell told Caldwell that he saw an opportunity for him to grow his business.

In fact, many churches have upped their online experience to share the word of God to the masses virtually.

DMX has also taken to social media to share the good news of the Bible. The rapper took to Instagram Live and hosted a virtual Bible study. The only notice he gave was a very vague video announcement earlier that day where he said he had “something personal to share.” Many wondered if it was bad news since a lot of us only know the DMX whose very public battle with substance abuse, domestic disputes, dogfighting, and numerous run-ins with police were on display constantly in the news.

But during DMX’s recent live session on Instagram, he went through scriptures in the bible in hopes to share God’s good news and help people deal with the uncertain times of this coronavirus pandemic.

According to a press release, one particular piece of his bible study X was going through the book of Ecclesiastes 3. It was during this section that he spoke about “a time being for everything” happening right now, even social distancing.

“Everyone involved with the production of these masks are local, black companies and that’s a collaboration you don’t see everyday,” said McCray, a 27-year-old tailor and Englewood resident. “What we are doing is not only helping to keep the community safe, but also helping our fellow black businesses too. And that is what excites me the most about this venture.”

According to Caldwell, clients include Brookins Funeral Home, Salem Baptist Church, Kids Academy Daycare, and UJAMAA Construction Inc., all Chicago-based, black-owned entities. And because facemasks are in high demand, Caldwell said he is not accepting any new orders.

“Of course that could change down the road, but for now, I have my hands full with my current cli-

ents,” he said. “I’m cranking out 150 masks a week for clients and that’s a lot when you are a small business.”

Newell added small businesses do not need a ton of employees to grow and companies don’t have to be super large to be innovative. You just have to be yourself, he said. “That’s what capitalism is all about.”

There are various places to buy cloth facemasks, like online or even at local gas stations.

But Caldwell said his facemasks are different from the others being sold.

“Your life’s work is on these facemasks. The company’s logo is designed on the masks, which allows for it to be used for marketing purposes,” explained Caldwell. “Just think about all the places employees go when they leave work where they could advertise their employer at no additional cost to the company.”

What You Need to Know About Filing Your 2019 Taxes StatePoint - Spring is the season of warmer weather and blossoming flowers, but it is also – usually – the season of taxes. Tax Day is typically April 15, but the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently extended the deadline for filing and paying your 2019 federal income taxes to July 15, 2020.

While this gives you more time to get your tax records in order, the IRS recommends that anyone expecting to receive a tax refund should file as soon as possible.

According to the IRS, most refunds are being issued within three weeks of a tax return’s acceptance. You should also double check your state’s tax deadlines. Some states have announced tax filing or payment extensions, but other deadlines remain in place.

Here are five other changes to keep in mind while you prepare your 2019 taxes:

• There is no longer a federal tax penalty for not having health insurance. However, some states will charge their own penalties for taxpayers who did not have health insurance in 2019.

• The standard deduction increased to $24,800 for married couples filing jointly and to $12,400 for single filers.

• If you received, sold, sent or exchanged any virtual currency in 2019, you will need to report that on your tax return.

• Mortgage insurance premiums above $600 are now deductible.

Mortgage premiums can also be retroactively applied to 2018.

• The Child Tax Credit doubled to $2,000 per child, up to $1,400 of which is refundable. The credit is also available to more families for the 2019 tax year, since the income thresholds for when this benefit phases out were raised to $400,000

for married couples filing jointly and $200,000 for individual filers.
