NEWS briefly EDUCATION NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK CELEBRATES HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, Toni Morrison, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. all attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs.) Unfortunately, many children are unaware of these institutions. “The ABCs of HBCUs,” written by Claudia Walker and published by HBCU Prep School, is raising awareness about Black colleges.

From A to Z, “The ABCs of HBCUs” gives readers a front-row, all-inclusive tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is the first children’s book to introduce young readers to college campuses like Howard University, Spelman College, Lincoln University and Meharry Medical College. Readers also learn about time-honored traditions such as the Battle of the Bands, homecoming, and Black fraternities and sororities. Award-winning brand-designer Jessica E. Boyd provided the illustrations for the book. This is a debut book release for Walker and Boyd.

FDA APPROVES FIRST IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR INITIAL TREATMENT OF GASTRIC CANCER The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Opdivo (nivolumab), in combination with certain types of chemotherapy, for the initial treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic gastric cancer, gastroesophageal junction cancer and esophageal adenocarcinoma. This is the first FDAapproved immunotherapy for the first-line treatment of gastric cancer.

“Today’s approval is the first treatment in more than a decade to show a survival benefit for patients with advanced or metastatic gastric cancer who are being treated for the first time,” said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence and acting director of the Office of Oncologic Diseases in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The FDA is committed to bringing new safe and effective treatment options like Opdivo to patients with advanced cancer.”

DURBIN JOINS CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS VIRTUAL HEALTH SUMMIT ON GUN VIOLENCE U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently joined a “Virtual Health Summit on Gun Violence” hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust. The discussion focused on addressing gun violence in Chicago and nationwide, including how public health systems are conducting violence intervention initiatives to reduce violence. The event was also hosted by U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) and Obama Administration Education Secretary Arne Duncan, now Managing Director of Chicago CRED. “Gun violence is at an epidemic level and we need to take on this crisis with public health solutions,” Durbin said. “We have seen promising public health intervention efforts in Chicago and I’ve been proud to be closely associated with several of them: traumainformed care, and the HEAL Initiative. My hope is that the work being done in Chicago can help public health institutions drive real results in their communities.”

Gloria Batey conceived of the idea for Hood to Hire in late 2020 as COVID-19 continued to change the way we all lived. She wanted to find a way for people to work in a COVID society and fulfill their career aspirations at the same time. Her goal includes preparing people for the new hiring market, with a focus on ways to make participants in the program employable for that hiring market.

Batey has been looking at a fall 2021 launch for the program. Right now, she has been fundraising and finalizing the curriculum. When she was told she would receive a $5,000 donation from Sherman Dodge, in partnership with Christmas in the Wards and Chicago Football Classic, she was grateful.

“I was over the moon happy because as a new organization and in the seed stages, it is hard to get people to donate to a concept and a vision at this point.

So, to have the bigger guys reach back and uplift me at this point, in a start up state was huge,” she said.

Batey said she will use the money to secure resources to help to make sure she is working toward her fall 2021 launch timeline. “The money will go to hire resources so that our curriculum can be the best as it relates to corporate onboarding and that level of academic proficiency that we’re going to bring into our neighborhoods,” she said.

Batey’s Hood to Hire was one of 11 organizations which received $5,000.

Two organizations, Black Men United and New Spiritual Light Youth Development, received $22,500. In all, 13 organizations received a portion of $100,000.

“Because of our longstanding relationship, Sherman Dodge asked Chicago Football Classic to identify community organizations they could support with the $100,000 donation,” Larry Huggins, founder of the Chicago Football Classic, said in a release.

Reggie Steele, sales manager at Sherman Dodge, said giving is not just about making a donation, it is about making a difference. “For the past 10 years, Sherman Dodge has partnered with the Chicago Football Classic to support education within our communities,”

Steele said in a release. “We started with the donation of a vehicle to raffle. After learning more about the game, scholarship program and the organization as a whole … we’ve increased the donation year over year.”

Steele added that Sherman Dodge looks forward to continuing the relationship and partnership with Christmas in the Wards and the Chicago Football Classic. “We hope in the future we’re able to do more for the community and for everyone else,” he said.

The Rev. John Harrell, president of Black Men United, said he was grateful to receive the money and for the work Huggins and Everett and Tim Rand have done with Chicago Football Classic and Christmas in the Wards.

“All we’re trying to do with Black Men United is tell a different story, share a different picture, paint a different narrative about Black men in America, that’s positive, productive and progressive,” he said. “Because of partnership[s] like this with Larry Huggins and all the aldermen, we have been able to feed more than 7 million people around the city of Chicago.”

Partnership with Chicago Public Schools Promotes Health Resources for Medicaid-Eligible Students The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS), the Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW), and HealthChoice Illinois recently announced a new joint initiative to raise awareness about the free public health resources that exist for CPS students and families that are enrolled in the Medicaid program.

The ‘Every Superhero Needs a Sidekick’ campaign, named after the wonderful CPS parents, will raise awareness about the full spectrum of healthcare and social services available to the more than 240,000 CPS students and families enrolled in Medicaid, and those who are eligible but not yet enrolled.

“We’re honored to team up with CPS to give students and their families the support they deserve when it comes to reaching the healthcare services they need,” said Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services Director

Theresa Eagleson. “Many healthcare services exist for Medicaid-eligible Illinoisans, but we know that sometimes families could use some assistance to determine what services are available and how best to access them. Our health plans are doing great work, as evidenced by this partnership.”

Illinois Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) played an integral role in the development of this initiative and will be working closely with CPS to connect eligible families to the services they need. The services include COVID-19 testing, health risk screenings, vaccinations, wellness check doctor visits, prescriptions, therapy, transportation to and from a doctor and much more.

The CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness is committed to ensuring every child has a medical home, and that families have access to the health care services they need. Through the new

initiative with HFS, which administers Illinois’ Medicaid program and serves to more than 3 million residents across the state, critical support will be available to CPS families who are currently enrolled in Medicaid and the estimated more than 37,000 students who are eligible but not yet enrolled.

“Equitable access to adequate healthcare is a fundamental human right that enables us at CPS to serve the whole student, a key pillar of our vision as a district,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “I want to thank the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and HealthChoice Illinois for their partnership in this initiative to get all of our families access to important health services.”

“Healthy students are better learners. Health insurance is critical for access to a medical home which is a powerful force for building a culture of health,” said CPS’

The aim is to both promote enrollment for those who are eligible, and to drive engagement between current Medicaid-enrolled families and health care providers, so they can utilize the full range of benefits available to them.

Scholar-Activist and Award-winning Playwright-Actress Address Spelman College Graduates A political activist who is known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad and the first African woman writer to have a play on Broadway, will address graduates during Spelman College’s commencement celebrations for the classes of 2020 and 2021 in separate, in-person ceremonies on May 16, 2021.

Scholar, writer, philosopher and equal rights activist Angela Y. Davis will deliver the keynote address for Spelman College’s 134th Commencement ceremony honoring the graduating class of 2021 during an outdoor ceremony at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 16, at the Georgia Institute of Technology Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Tony-nominated playwright and actress Danai Gurira, best known for her roles as General Okoye in Marvel’s 2018 Academy Award-winning blockbuster film “Black Panther” and Michonne in the AMC series “The Walking Dead” will deliver a keynote address to the class of 2020 during Spelman’s 133rd Commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, May 16, at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

During the ceremonies, both Davis and Gurira will receive honorary degrees. Literary luminary Pearl Cleage, C’71, will receive Spelman’s 2021 national community service award, and HBCU champion U.S. Rep. Alma S. Adams, Ph.D., (D-NC) will be honored with the 2020 national community service award.

“The COVID-19 pandemic presented the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 with a set of obstacles unlike any other, and they have proven that they were up to the task,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., president of Spelman. “Although their lives were essentially put on pause, these two classes displayed resilience and courage, and thrived despite the tremendous challenges presented by the pandemic. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with our stellar graduates and their families.”

Due to closures related to the coronavirus pandemic, graduation celebrations for the class of 2020 were postponed until this year. Both ceremonies will take place rain or shine, and follow masking and physical distance guidelines in accordance with current COVID-19 restrictions to ensure the health and safety of graduates and guests.

Angela Y. Davis Davis’ leadership in addressing seminal equity and social justice challenges spans more than 50 years. Now a distinguished professor emerita in the Division of Humanities at the University

of California Santa Cruz, she gained national attention in 1969 after being removed from her teaching position in the Philosophy Department at UCLA as a result of her social activism and her membership in the Communist Party.

In 1970, she was placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List on false charges and was the subject of an intense police search that drove her underground and culminated in a trial that received global attention. During her 16-month incarceration, a massive international “Free Angela Davis” campaign was organized, leading to her acquittal in 1972.

Over the last 25 years, Davis has lectured about racism, sexism, terrorism, LGBTQ rights, immigration, feminism, and the criminal justice system in all 50 states, as well as in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the former Soviet Union. Named Time Magazine’s Woman of the Year in 1971 and a member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, she has written articles and essays that have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. Davis is the author of nine books, including “Angela Davis: An Autobiography,” and a new edition of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.”

Danai Gurira Gurira is the first African woman to bring the perspective of African women to mainstream theater. The author of stage plays that give voice to untold narratives, Gurira creates works that have earned numerous awards, including “In the Continuum” (OBIE Award, Outer Critics Award, Helen Hayes Award), “Eclipsed” (Tony nomination: Best Play, NAACP Award, Helen Hayes Award: Best New Play, Connecticut Critics Circle Award: Outstanding Production of a Play), and “The Convert” (six Ovation Awards, L.A. Outer Critics Award).

For her role in “Black Panther,” Gurira won a People’s Choice Award, an NAACP Image Award and a shared SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast/Motion Picture. Later that year, she reprised her role in “Avengers: Infinity War” and again in “Avengers: Endgame,” which went on to become the No.1 top grossing film in history.

Born in Iowa to Zimbabwean parents and raised in Zimbabwe, Gurira holds a master’s degree in fine arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Despite her tremendous success as an actress and playwright, Gurira still finds time to help those in need. With a personal dedication to effect tangible change in

Millennials Make Their Mark, Highlighting a Big Shift in the Investing Landscape A much broader range of Americans are investing and engaging in U.S. financial markets, with Millennials, as well as households with the smallest amount to invest, growing in influence from year-end 2017 through June 30, 2020, according to a new quantitative study released by Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: BR), a global Fintech leader.

This study, the first-of-its kind and scale – Broadridge Insights on U.S. Investors – provides unprecedented evidence-based data and observations of investors who buy mutual funds, ETFs and equities through financial intermediaries. The study covered tens of millions of U.S. investor households and billions of data points, providing a unique perspective across generations, geography, educational attainment, channels, investment products, and wealth tiers.

“We are all witnessing an unprecedented and accelerated democratization of U.S. investing,” said Bob Schifellite, Broadridge’s investor communication solutions president. “The signs are undeniable as younger investors, particularly Millennials, grew as a percentage of investors studied from 9% to 14% during this period. Additionally, households with the smallest amount to invest, referred to as the Mass Market, grew in influence from 30% to 38% of investing households.

Many are investing using cost-effective ETFs, and more have broader access to low-cost institutional shares, highlighting a changing investing landscape.”

Key Findings include: * Millennials are up-and-comers in the market Millennials (born 1981 – 1996), the fastest-growing generation in numbers of investors studied, will continue to grow within the Mass Market segment and beyond. Millennials grew as a percentage of overall U.S. investors studied from 9% to 14% over the period and Gen X (born 1965 – 1980) grew from 24% to 27%.

Boomers (born 1946 – 1964) decreased as a total percentage of investors studied from 46% to 43% and the Silent Generation (born 1928 – 1945) also declined as a percentage of investors from 20% to 14% – but both still comprise 57% of the number of investors analyzed across the generational segments studied. * Mass Market rise The Mass Market, defined as households with less than $100,000 in investable assets, grew in influence with a rising share of households and Assets Under Management (AUM).

During the study period, the Mass Market grew from 30% to 38% of households with Mass Affluent ($100K to <$1MM) dropping from 57% to 51% and High Net Worth ($1MM+) dipping from 13% to 11%.

The Mass Market also represents a growing share of asset ownership, defined as investments in mutual funds, ETFs and U.S. equities. Despite lower household AUM of 10% of the overall assets studied, the Mass Market gained 3% in asset ownership share since 2017. In contrast, Mass Affluent and High Net Worth AUM decreased over the same period.

“The study highlights trends that are indicative of things to come and present enormous opportunity for asset managers and advisors who adapt to address the emerging needs of investors,” said Dan Cwenar, Broadridge’s president of data and analytics. “Money is expected to continue to flow into low-cost investment vehicles such as passive and active ETFs and Millennials and Mass Market investors will continue to gain influence as their assets grow.” * Investors purchased low-cost Institutional Shares and ETFs While A-class shares and institutional shares are the most widely held by households, A-class shares declined in household ownership from 43% at the end of 2017 to 39% on June 30, 2020. During the same period, household ownership of institutional shares grew from 44% to 54%.

Household ownership of ETFs grew steadily from 30% to 37%. In contrast, the share of mutual funds increased 2% over this period, although

U.S. equities growth was flat. * Limited Pandemic Asset Shifts Effects Seen Across Generations, but Equities Rise Boomer and Silent generations were at or above their pre-Covid AUM levels by the end of June 2020.

Boomer and Silent generations comprised 76% of household AUM and fared slightly better than Gen X and Millennials who were slightly below pre-Covid AUM levels.

However, purchases of U.S. equities increased to 31% as of June 30, 2020, a 3% uptick over 2019. Increases were experienced (in order) by Millennials, Gen-X and Boomers. * Regional Differences The highest concentration of Mass Market households was in the South (38%) while the highest concentration of High Net Worth (HNW) households was in the West (41%) – California alone accounted for 28% of HNW households.

Mass Affluent households were more evenly divided across regions, with the highest concentration in the South (32%).

The South consistently had the highest concentration of households across all distribution channels ranging from 31% for RIA, 31% for Online, 33% for Broker-Dealer and 35% for Wirehouse. However, the least concentration varied with Bro-

ker-Dealer and RIA both at 19% in the Northeast and Wirehouse (18%) and Online (19%) in the Midwest.

Study Methodology Drawing on anonymized data, this study delivers a unique, evidence-based view of investor holdings. * Represents 44 million U.S. households that invest in mutual funds (open-end, closed-end), U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) sold through financial intermediaries. * Utilizes a de-identified sample of 20,000 households extracted from a dataset of those 44 million investor households spanning billions of data points. * Includes data for year-ends 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the first half of 2020.

This study focused on individual investor holdings through intermediaries. The sample does not include: * Institutional investors, such as pension funds, hedge funds or endowments and foundations * Retirement plans, such as 401(k) and defined benefit plans * 529 college savings plans * Bank deposits (checking, savings, CDs, money markets) * Directly held mutual fund shares, fixed income, money market funds * Real assets such as real estate, art, automobiles and jewelry

Resiliency Amidst COVID: How This Black Business Reemerged As A Global Tech Solution For Minority Small Business Needs Chase For Business Is Focused On Helping Startup Business Gologic Solutions Give Back To The Small Business Community The coronavirus pandemic caused unprecedented loss for Patrice Darby. Her first business, GoNanny, a childcare service, closed in 2020 due to COVID-19, leaving her battling grief after losing something she worked tirelessly to build.

Instead of focusing on her own misfortune, Patrice, a seven-year technology veteran and second-generation entrepreneur, realized that the pandemic was affecting hundreds of other small businesses in Chicagoland . As businesses were forced to close, those without technical capabilities, access to technology or the ability to pivot their business online struggled, especially minority-owned businesses.

With so many businesses facing the same technology

hurdles, Patrice saw an opportunity and she reemerged with a new business called GoLogic Solutions, a data aggregation and economic development platform that helps small businesses accelerate growth and reduce failure while increasing the capabilities of entrepreneurial support organizations.

To launch her new venture, Patrice knew she needed a strong financial partner to support her long-term goal of growing globally. Ultimately, I want to be able to show small business owners like Patrice tangible business growth.”

Since teaming up with Pamela, Patrice has focused on diversifying her revenue streams, which has helped her limit her business’ financial risks while building her client base and offerings. Through the Chase for Business pro-

gram, Patrice now has a clear business development strategy, and as GoLogic rapidly expands, a better understanding of what the business will look like in the future and how to execute on her plans.

“It’s always surprising to see how many entrepreneurs forego access to a business mentor,” said Patrice. “Having a reliable partner who you can trust to inform your business decisions is one of the most important things you can do as an entrepreneur.”

Launched in 2020, JP Morgan Chase’s $30 Path Forward commitment aims to drive an inclusive economic recovery and advance racial equity. Over the next five years, Chase plans to provide an additional 15,000 loans to minority-owned small

businesses – up to $2 billion.

Through this initiative, business owners in 13 cities across the U.S., including in Chicago, will be matched with a senior business consultant who will provide advisory services such as mentorship, business development coaching, resources and financial planning to help strengthen sustainable business growth for Black, Latinx, female and veteran entrepreneurs. The program is available to all, Chase customers and non-customers alike.

Virtual OZY Fest in partnership with HBCU’s Clubhouse OZY Media recently announced that OZY Fest, its one-of-a-kind festival of great entertainment, interactive experiences and big conversations, will return on May 15-16 as a virtual event, after the 2020 festival was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. City Colleges of Chicago Announces New Scholarship Program to Support CPS Graduates in Becoming CPS Teachers SEED (Supporting Emerging Educators Development) Scholarship Will Support CPS Graduates Preparing for a Teaching Career Through Teach Chicago Tomorrow Pathways Beginning This Fall Chicago – City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Chancellor Juan Salgado today announced the SEED Scholarship to increase the pipeline of talented and diverse educators in Chicago. Starting this fall, the SEED Scholarship (Supporting Emerging Educators Development) will support CPS graduates participating in Teach Chicago Tomorrow, a new partnership initiative that creates a clear path from high school to college and back to CPS as a full-time teacher. The scholarship is designed to cover most, if not all, City Colleges tuition, books, and class materials for participating students.

“Diversifying our talent pool of teachers is a top priority for our schools and underscores our deep commitment to equity across Chicago,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot.

“The City is building its own recruitment pathway of high-quality teachers of color to return to CPS classrooms and educate the next generation of our city’s young people.

I applaud City Colleges’ partnership with CPS to bring its resources to bear to meet a critical workforce need in Chicago.”

Chancellor Salgado added, “The cost of college can no longer be a barrier to our students’ aspirations, in particular the many Black, Latinx and low-income students we serve at City Colleges of Chicago. Our investment in SEED joins a growing number of financial supports we’ve developed to ensure City Colleges students can access and complete a college credential. It will help transform our city, creating a more diverse teacher workforce and a more inclusive economy.”

The SEED Scholarship launches this fall for CPS graduates from the classes of 2020 and 2021, and includes undocumented students and students from CPS charter schools who apply and enroll in Teach Chicago Tomorrow.

City Colleges will offer up to $3,000 in individual scholarship dollars each year to at least 100 students, with the scholarship amount based on the number of credits taken. Students taking 6-8 credits per semester will receive a stipend of $750/semester, students taking 9-11 credits will receive a stipend of $1,000/semester, and students taking 12 or more credits will receive a stipend of $1,500/ semester.

The scholarship will be renewable up to three years.

Students can also apply for other scholarships on top of SEED. “As a CPS graduate who began my career as a CPS teacher, I can personally attest to the importance of diverse teacher representation on students’ social-emotional well-being and academic progress,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “A growing body of research shows the positive impact of having a diverse teacher workforce on students of color and we are fully committed to building a more diverse teacher pipeline through innovative partnerships and programs, like Teach Chicago Tomorrow. This new scholarship is a critical investment in our students that helps reduces barriers for participation, and it is another step forward in creating a more equitable future for our city.”

in education, human and natural sciences and serves as the host campus for the SEED Scholarship and Teach Chicago Tomorrow program. Students are able to take their general education courses across all seven of the City Colleges. “As we look at supporting new teachers, we must recognize our responsibility to give them the nourishment they need to grow in their craft,” said Truman College President Shawn Jackson, a former CPS student, teacher and principal himself. “The SEED Scholarship will allow us to provide an investment in aspiring teachers – the seeds we plant now will be the teachers of tomorrow.”

Students who are accepted to receive the SEED Scholarship will be placed in one of two tracks: Pathways Partnership or Emerging Educator, both of which further Teach Chicago Tomorrow’s mission to support homegrown educators. After acceptance into the SEED Scholarship, students will complete a City Colleges of Chicago application.

Through the Teach Chicago Tomorrow Pathways Partnership, students begin by earning an associate degree through City Colleges and then earn their bachelor’s degree by completing the second two years of college as an Illinois State University student. Throughout the program, intensive support will be provided to help them successfully navigate the pathway to becoming a teacher.

The Emerging Educator track will put students on a pathway to complete education coursework at City Colleges, and transfer to a four-year institution to complete their studies. Students recruited for this track will aspire

to become a teacher, but may not be sure of subject or grade level, or wish to teach outside of the elementary or Special Education track. The coursework and pacing for the Emerging Educator track allow a student to attend full- or part-time. SEED Scholars who subsequently earn an Illinois Professional Educator License will have priority placement for a full-time teaching job in CPS schools.

Illinois has seen a significant decline in Black and Latinx students earning education degrees, despite more Black and Latinx students graduating college than ever before. According to a CPS analysis of data from the Illinois Board of Higher Education over the past decade in Illinois, there’s been a 54 percent decline in African American students earning education degrees and 28 percent decline in Latinx students earning education degrees.

According to surveys, approximately ten percent of CPS high school students indicate they are interested in working in education, but far fewer go on to become educators. The SEED Scholarship and Teach Chicago Tomorrow creates a clear pathway to become a teacher along with structured supports to help students achieve their goals.

CPS hires approximately 140 CPS graduates as teachers per year, and is setting a long-term goal to triple the number of CPS grads hired annually to more than 500. Based on current trends, most of those new homegrown teachers will be Black or Latinx.

Black-Owned Production Company Awards Antonio de Graffenreaidt $20,000 to Develop Unscripted Series on Racism in America TLG Motion Pictures (“Hoarders”), founded by American film and television producer Courtney LeMarco, recently announced that it has selected Antonio de Graffenreaidt as winner of The Big Pitch, a national competition providing opportunity for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) with a strong interest in film, production, and content creation. The 34-year-old Los Angeles, California resident has been awarded a $20,000 Service Grant toward the development of his unscripted series concept Culture Shock. de Graffenreaidt’s Culture Shock is an unscripted series that tells the timely story of racism in America. An intense social experiment, Culture Shock will invite people with vastly different world views and backgrounds, like a Black Lives Matter activist and a Proud Boy, to switch places and live in each other’s shoes for two weeks. At the end of each episode, participants of Culture Shock’s social experiment will come together to discuss what they learned.

“I believe Culture Shock can be a unique opportunity to hold up a mirror to the racial injustices happening in America right now,” said de Graffenreaidt. “As a Black man, I realize racial inequity and violence on Black and brown bodies is nothing new.
