KAZOOM FEST TO BRING MULTICULTURAL KAZOOM KIDS’ iSTORYBOOKS TO LIFE ONSTAGE KaZoom Kids Books (www.kazoomkidsbooks.com), an interactive digital publishing company dedicated to bringing greater diversity to children’s literature, recently announced KaZoom Fest, a collaboration with the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA).

HSA’s youngest theater and acting students, and some of their parents, will bring three KaZoom iStorybook titles to life as three short plays complete with theatrical performances, music, and choreography provided by Harlem School of the Arts’ theater, music and dance departments. The three stories are Taking the E Train and Everybody Loves Cake by Lapacazo Sandoval, and Alyssa Marissa and Her Magical Hair by Angela Williams. Both authors will attend the event and discuss their work prior to the show. Representing and immersing children of color in stories and the arts is an aim that resonates deeply with both KaZoom and Harlem School of the Arts.

ASSOCIATION OF BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), an inclusive organization dedicated to eliminating disparities in cardiovascular diseases, has recently installed John M. Fontaine, MD, MBA, FACC, FHRS as its 17th President and Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH as its first woman Chair of the Board of Directors.

Among other notable accomplishments, Dr. Fontaine is a Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and Director of Arrhythmia Services. He possesses an MBA in Healthcare Management and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Dr. Pegus currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU School of Medicine.

DUCKWORTH & FAMILY WELCOME SECOND DAUGHTER INTO THE WORLD U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) became the first U.S. Senator to give birth while in office when she delivered her second daughter, Maile (pronounced MY-lee) Pearl Bowlsbey recently.

“Bryan, Abigail and I couldn’t be happier to welcome little Maile Pearl as the newest addition to our family and we’re deeply honored that our good friend Senator Akaka was able to bless her name for us—his help in naming both of our daughters means he will always be with us,” said Senator Duckworth in a released statement. Though millions of American women have become mothers while continuing their careers, Senator Duckworth is one of only 10 women since our nation’s founding who have given birth while serving in Congress.

n April 22 the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) will hold their annual memorial service at the Confederate Mound in Oak Woods Cemetery honoring Confederate soldiers. The group will be met by Smash White Supremacy (SWS), an organization that has been mobilizing to call for the removal of the monument that stands at the helm of the confederate mound.

Smash White Supremacy is made up of anti-racist organizations and individuals working for social and economic justice for all people, according to their Facebook page.

“We have two goals really, one of them is to form a coalition in Chicago against white supremacy and then the long-term goal also is to get this huge statue removed. We are both educating the community about our campaign and also kind of taking leadership from the community so we aren’t doing something in their backyard that they don’t want,” said Savannah Webb, an organizer for Smash White Supremacy.

On the southwest side of Oak Woods Cemetery, there is a 30-foot granite monument dedicated to the thousands of Confederate soldiers who died at Camp Douglas as prisoners of the civil war. The monument marks a mass grave containing the remains of thousands of Confederate prisoners, according to the Nation Park Service.

“We gather to honor the 6000 men buried at Confederate

Mound, who suffered through harsh winters, extreme summer temperatures, starvation, human cruelty by the hands of Federal guards only to die in a prison camp and never be able to return home,” said Matthew Evans. Camp Commander of the SCV Camp Douglas Memorial chapter.

Both groups are planning to peacefully organize in the cemetery on April 22.

“We respect their right to the First Amendment. We respect their right to gather, but it is a two-way road. We hope that they can respect our presence there at Confederate Mound and realize that this ceremony is not to divide or open old wounds, but to pay respect for the dead. Confederate Mound is not a monument, but a headstone, a headstone for 6000 men who never got to go home,” said Evans.

Likewise, Webb said their intention is to not have any sort of conflict with the SCV. “Outside of the cemetery we are going to wait for the Sons of the Confederacy to go in and start their memorial service and then we are going to go in after them. We don’t want to have any contact with them,” said Webb.

While they wait, SWS will be displaying two timelines. One being the life and work of Ida B. Wells, who is buried in the Oak Woods Cemetery, and the other shows the history of the monument.

“Our goal for the 22nd is to offer a counter-narrative to the memorial service that they hold. We are going to have our own memorial service to honor the right side of history, and to us, that’s honoring Ida B. Wells,” said Webb.

Steans celebrates Senate passage of Equal Rights Amendment Illinois a step closer to endorsing constitutionally protected rights for women SPRINGFIELD, IL – After a nearly 50

year-long battle, the Illinois State Senate took a historic vote Wednesday to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and solidify equal rights for all.

“Women across the nation are rising up and pushing back against laws and policies that deny our equality,” said State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago), sponsor of the measure. “By voting to ratify the ERA, Illinois lawmakers are saying to women everywhere, ‘We hear you, and we stand with you.’”

The Equal Rights Amendment declares that equality of rights will not be denied by the United States or any state on account of sex. It initially was introduced in Congress in 1923 and www.thechicagocitizen.com

was sent to the states for ratification 46 years ago.

Several advancements for women’s rights, such as the Equal Pay Act and Title IX, could be repealed by a majority vote in Congress. The Executive Branch also could reduce enforcement of these acts. The ERA solidifies legal protections for women.

“Many people do not realize women have no guaranteed equal rights under the U.S. Constitution. From equal pay to equal health care access, women’s rights are in jeopardy as long as our equality is not cemented in the Constitution,” Steans said.

Decades of widespread misinformation have hindered Illinois’ ability to

ratify the ERA, she added.

“For decades, opposition has argued that the ERA would open women to being drafted and that it would hurt mothers in custody or divorce battles,” Steans said. “The fact is the ERA would strengthen protections and legal standards for women.”

To date, 36 states have voted to ratify the ERA, with Nevada being the most recent. To be ratified to the Constitution, 38 states must approve the amendment.

The legislation now moves to the House for further consideration. For Illinois to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, three-fifths of House members will need to vote in support.

Steans also sponsored a measure to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in 2014.

This is the first piece of legislation passed in the Senate with the support of the newly formed, bipartisan Senate Women’s Caucus.

he Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS) recently hosted their annual Girl Power Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago. The event celebrated the accomplishments of YWLCS students and featured a panel discussion to accentuate the need for more women in government, STEM fields, and the workplace in general.

The YWLCS was founded in 1999 and is the only all-girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) charter school in Chicago. There are nearly 350 young women who attend YWLCS and the school boasts a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate, according to a press release from the YWLCS. “It was my goal when I came here to revitalize our mission which says that we inspire urban girls to engage in rigorous college preparatory learning in a small school environment that focuses on Science Technology and Math,” said Dr. Vanesa

Scott-Thompson, principal of YWLCS. In the fall, YWLCS will introduce two new engineering classes, introduction to engineering and principals of engineering, that will make them a full STEM school, according to Scott-Thompson.

“I am so committed to making sure we live up to our mission and to make sure the girls have science, technology, engineering, and math because it impacts every part of our lives and if you think about it, people who are working in these fields do not look like us and they are primarily men so I’m trying to make sure we have a women’s pipeline,” said ScottThompson.

The school offers a mentor program that connects senior students with women working in STEM careers who commit to helping the students get prepared for college and providing them with support at least through their first two years of college, according to Scott-Thompson.

Originally, Kennedy planned to pursue a career in aerospace engineering like Holmes, but after meeting students from different parts of the world, she changed her passion to political science and believes in her own power to be an ambassador and an advocate for African people around the world.

Another student, Kiarra Pearson, is a junior at YWLCS and has already been working with her mentor Anne Pramaggiore, the CEO of ComEd. “Since I met Anne she has been in my ear helping me to prepare for college and trying to get me into different programs to make my resume look really nice,” said Pearson. “I want to come out of my senior year with straight A’s so I can get as much money as I possibly can to go to college.”

Both girls are thankful for what they have learned from their mentors and the impact that YWLCS has had on their futures.

“Young Women’s has really impacted my life to be more socially aware of what goes on around me and be aware that people do look at me and see what I’m doing,” said Kennedy.

Chicago Park District and Lincoln Park Zoo Present Family Nature Days Series this Spring

T

he Chicago Park District and Lincoln Park Zoo announce the creation of Family Nature Days, an interactive, nature-based program for the entire family. Lincoln Park Zoo will host the nature play series at nine Chicago parks across the city, through November 3. Park locations include Bosley Park, Cornell Park, River Park, Lincoln Park Zoo, Smith Park, Washington Park, West Pullman Park, Shabbona Park and Calumet Park. All of the pop-up nature play dates are admission free.

THE GIFT IN THE STORM

W

e have all encountered experiences in our life that were not only difficult to meet but difficult to work through. For many of us, these experiences become a sort of dark night of the soul. The walk through the vortex of darkness and uncertainty has led many of us to believe that we could not make it through.

Then, low and behold, the storms ceases, the clouds open up, the darkness disappears, and there you stand wet…but on the other side of the storm.

We sometimes forget that challenges such as these bring with them a transformational quality; a transformational quality that we are not only supposed to learn to endure but be better from.

Remember Joseph the Dreamer?

He had it all: heavenly and patriarchal favor, an attainable vision, confidence, giftedness, the ability to serve and support others. He also had to learn how to withstand the darkness of the storm if he was to become all that he saw himself being.

Whether the challenge was being betrayed, being celebrated, being wrongly accused, being unjustly imprisoned, or being expected to know how to deal with favor and leadership, Joseph had to go through the storm before he was ready to move into the station that leads from the pit to the palace. So must you and I. Microwaveable mentalities and thirty minute total home remodels would have us believe that the dust will not even settle before we awake fresh, clean, and brand new. While we may be game for a reality makeover, we cannot forget that greatness is often grown, weathered, and discovered through the difficulties of life.

Rushing through the storm increases the likelihood of incident. Keep moving but take advantage of the time to learn about your strength, power, capacity, and capabilities. Darkness can draw us closer to the Light, if we understand the rhythm of creation. Use the time as a means by which to experience a closer walk with God and calm a raging sea.

oday is truly a day that the Lord has made and the more complicated the world gets, the simpler the Word of God is to understand. Often, and do I mean often, I get reminded of the power and seductive nature of ego, pride and the need to control. Or, should I say the need to be in control?

Letting go and letting God is a simple concept to say and dare I say, an easy concept to understand? Yet why is it so hard to do? We all know people who can quote scripture backwards and forwards, yet have no faith. We know Christian control freaks who must have the last say and who must be right all the time. I know I sometimes get caught up in constantly trying to rationalize circumstances in order to explain the events of the day, any day, as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority.

It is more often than not, at these times that if I’m blessed and open to receiving the Holy Spirit, that I then get a chance to see the miracles, the nuances, the essence of my life. I am not in control, never have been, never will be and, it’s okay.

Giving your life to Christ requires a constant vigil against taking credit or assessing blame. When you focus on service in the name of the Lord, you really do get a chance to see things from a different perspective. You see the service I’m referring to is the selfless kind that neither seeks nor expects reward. The mere act speaks for itself. How much more simple does it have to be? Christ even suggests that God can see into your heart and know your intention. Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself. It’s so simple, it’s incredible. It’s so simple that if you’re not careful, you’ll miss it altogether. I know I have.

Now on this day, or any day that God has made, let’s take this simple concept and apply it to a very complex world. Behavior should have parameters. Actions should have purpose. We know they have consequences. Intent should always be uppermost in your mind. Now, let’s look back over your yesterday. See how easy it was from the time you got up, until the time you laid down, to succumb to jealousy, pettiness, cruelty, envy and the like? It takes work to be humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day, every day. It takes willpower and you know the will I’m talking about.

I believe the calling of every Christian is to try. It’s the effort that God expects. It’s the intent He wants. If you’re first seeking the kingdom of heaven, then that quest should have some direct bearing on what you do today, how you perform, what you say

and certainly whom you hang out with. I’m fortunate to have known people I believe were truly angels walking. I really do believe there are saints among us and we ignore them all the time because we’re too busy pursuing the world, rather than pursuing God. However, from these living breathing angels, I’ve learned that the battle is not over until you know you’ve already won. The quest is not over until you are born, born again, die and ultimately live forever.”

There’s a line in the movie “Gladiator” that says, “What we do in life…echoes in eternity.” It’s kind of nice to know that Jesus already took care of that eternity thing. All I have to do is get through this life thing. If truth be told, I think I’ve got the easy part. It may not make sense on the surface, but when you stop and think about it, it really is simple. See me. See God. I can do this. I’ve just got to let go, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one person at a time. Try it, just once, try it.

STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® other than authorized use as set forth above constitutes unauthorized use, counterfeiting, of Secured Party's common-law copyrighted property, contractually binds User, renders this Copyright Notice a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's assets, land, and personal property, and all of User's interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common-law-copyrighted trade- name/trade-mark STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User's contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User's unauthorized use of Secured Party's common-law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office, wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest.

User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole dis-

cretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User's default, and without further notice, any and all of User's property and interest, described above in paragraph "(2)," formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this "Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use," that Secured Party, again in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate. Terms for Curing Default: Upon event of default, as set forth above under "Default Terms," irrespective of any and all of User's former property and interest in property, described above in paragraph "(2)," in the possession of, as well as disposed of by, Secured Party, as authorized above under "Default Terms," User may cure User's default only re the remainder of User's said former property and interest property, formerly pledged as collateral that is neither in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party within twenty (20) days of date of User's default only by payment in full. Terms of Strict Foreclosure: User's non-payment in full of all unauthorizeduse fees itemized in Invoice within said twenty- (20) day period for curing default as set forth above under "Terms for Curing Default" authorizes Secured Party's immediate nonjudicial strict foreclosure on any and all remaining former property and interest in property, formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, which is not in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party upon expiration of said twenty- (20) day default-curing period.
