NEWS briefly EDUCATION COLLEGE STUDENTS EARN EXTRA INCOME AS ONLINE ENGLISH TEACHERS Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the online teaching industry and demand for qualified online ESL teachers is proving to be a viable option for new graduates, according to a news release.

NEW REPORT: PATIENTS PAY THE PRICE WITH PROLIFERATION OF SUBSTANDARD HEALTH PLANS A new report published by 30 patient organizations shows the significant risks patients face when they enroll in non-compliant and substandard health insurance products, and details ways state and federal lawmakers can help protect these vulnerable consumers.

The report, “Under-Covered: How ‘Insurance-Like’ Products Are Leaving Patients Exposed,” issued by a coalition representing millions of people with pre-existing conditions, details eight different types of “non-compliant plans” that do not adhere to Affordable Care Act (ACA) consumer protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions, elimination of annual and lifetime coverage limits, and coverage for essential health benefits.

The plans have proliferated in recent years, and in many cases, are marketed to consumers who don’t fully understand what they’re purchasing. As a result, patients are often vulnerable to exorbitant medical bills. This report serves as a warning to consumers to avoid these plans – and a call to action to lawmakers.

EEOC CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST ASIAN AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS IN THE UNITED STATES The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) unanimously approved a resolution condemning the recent violence, harassment, and acts of bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The resolution reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to combat all forms of harassment and discrimination against members of AAPI communities, and to ensure equal opportunity, inclusion, and dignity for all in the workplace.

“The Commission condemns the recent violence and discrimination against AAPI persons in the strongest possible terms,” said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows.

“Hatred, xenophobia, and racism violate our nation’s core principles. The Commission stands in solidarity with the victims, their families, and AAPI communities across the nation, and we pledge to work together to address harassment, bias, and discrimination in the workplace.”

The EEOC advances equal opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination.

Dr. Helen Carry On Thursday, April 8, 2021, our beloved teacher, former Executive Minister and spiritual mother, the Reverend Dr. Helen Ward Carry, made her transition. We lovingly hold her up in prayer as we release her into the grace, peace, and harmony of God’s presence.

“Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” 1 John 3:18 (NRSV) Referred to as the Teacher of Teachers and a Living Legend of the New Thought Christian Community, Rev. Dr. Helen Carry was drawn to Christ Unity Temple in 1970 where Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon was senior minister. By 1974, Rev. Dr. Carry developed and directed the Johnnie Colemon Institute (JCI), while assisting with the creation of church systems that are still being successfully implemented decades later. The Johnnie Colemon Institute remains the teaching arm of Christ Universal Temple (CUT).

It was Rev. Dr. Carry’s proven dedication to the study of Truth Principles and divine appointment that prompted Rev. Colemon to assign Rev. Carry as her assistant in 1976. Rev. Carry was later ordained as a Universal Foundation for Better Living (UFBL) minister in 1980 and became an assistant minister at Christ Universal Temple. In 1982, Rev. Colemon sent Rev. Carry to Miami to train and

assist the Rev. Mary Tumpkin with the development of the new church, Universal Truth Center.

Rev. Dr. Helen Carry was an iconic spiritual teacher, leader, and mentor. She taught the importance of mastering your subject matter and always being in divine order. Rev. Carry taught through her classroom and more importantly, through her example and commitment, how a minister should serve humanity. She not only taught standards of excellence, she planted the

seed within each person she met. Rev. Carry’s teachings and leadership is sewn into the tapestry of CUT and UFBL. “Everything I experienced prepared me for my work with Johnnie who brought me into her vision of an institution that devoted itself to teaching spiritual principles of better living based on the teachings Jesus lived and taught.” Rev. Northwestern Medicine Performs Double-Lung Transplant on COVID-19 Patient Using Lungs from COVID-19 Donor Northwestern Medicine surgeons have successfully performed a double-lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient using lungs from a donor who previously had COVID-19. The transplant recipient, an Illinois man in his 60s, received lungs from a donor who cleared the virus after having mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. The donor’s death was unrelated to COVID-19 and their lungs didn’t suffer any permanent damage from the virus, making them viable for transplantation.

“This is a milestone for lung transplantation,” says Ankit Bharat, MD, chief of thoracic surgery and surgical director of the Northwestern Medicine Lung Transplant Program, who performed the procedure. “To date, 30 million Americans have had COVID-19 and many of them are registered organ donors. If we say ‘no’ to them just because they had COVID-19 in the past, we will drastically reduce the donor pool and there’s already a big supply and demand gap. We will have a massive problem on our hands if Americans can’t donate their organs after having a mild to

moderate case of COVID-19.”

To ensure the donor had cleared the virus from the body, the lung transplant team performed a test that examines the donor’s lung fluid. This same test has been performed before every lung transplant procedure at Northwestern Memorial Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team also performs a lung biopsy in the operating room to make sure there’s no permanent damage to the donor lung.

“Studies have shown that if your nasal swab is negative 8-10 days out of your COVID-19 symptoms you don’t have any live virus in your airways, but that nasal swab doesn’t confirm if you’ve cleared the virus from your lungs,” explains Dr. Bharat.

“We can’t rely on a nasal swab alone to see if the donor has cleared the virus – we have to check the lung fluid. If the swab and lung fluid both come back clear of the virus and the lung biopsy confirms there’s no permanent damage to the lungs, we can feel confident in the quality of the donor lungs.

recover at optimal pace.”

The patient, who works in health care, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in May 2020 and suffered permanent lung damage. He was placed on a ventilator and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life support machine that does the work of the heart and lungs, before being transferred to Northwestern Memorial.

After spending one week on the transplant wait-list, the patient received the life-saving procedure in February, becoming one of the first-known COVID-19 survivors in the United States to receive lungs from a donor who recovered from the virus.

“Current consensus guidelines are that donors with a history of COVID-19 can be used for organ transplantation as long as they have clinically recovered and have negative testing,” says Michael Ison, MD, infectious diseases and organ transplantation specialist at Northwestern Medicine. “But currently, many transplant centers are worried about the risk of transmission of COVID-19 from donors, particularly for lung transplants, and are unnecessarily discarding these organs.

This donor clarifies the safety of the use of these donors.”

Since the start of the pandemic, Northwestern Medicine surgeons have completed 14 double-lung transplants on COVID-19 survivors – the most performed at any hospital in the world. Their first double-lung transplant for a COVID-19 patient happened in June 2020, which was the first-known time in the United States.

“We’re optimistic that all 14 patients will make a full recovery and return to their daily lives,” says Rade Tomic, MD, pulmonologist and medical director of the Lung Transplant Program. “But we need to have a serious conversation about the future of lung transplantation.

With many COVID-19 survivors still suffering long-term effects of the virus, the need for transplantation will continue to grow. We should not immediately disregard organ donors who had mild cases and fully recovered from COVID-19; especially when millions of young Americans contracted the virus.”

Community organization continues legacy to serve residents Continued from page 1

Imani Community Development Corporation, located at 2314 E. 83rd St., has been serving the Southeast side of Chicago since it was founded in 2001.

The Reverend Jeffrey Hodges, pastor of King of Glory Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, is also the founder and president of Imani Community Development Corporation.

Rev. Hodges, has been the pastor of King of Glory Church for 22 years, but has been at the church for 45 years. He lives in the community, which he said is important when serving a community. “I ride my bike, I walk through the community, so I have a feel for the community.

I have a great love for the Southeast side of Chicago,” he said.

Rev. Hodges said the church’s motto is ‘the church that fills the need’. He added that while Imani focuses on the natural needs of the community, the church focuses on the community’s spiritual needs. “That’s the reason why we really started Imani Community Development, to help the church not

have walls, and for our church to truly be a community church,” he said.

Dawn Hodges is the executive director of Imani Community Development Corporation. She said the organization handles the food distribution, mentoring program and out of school program. She added, the mission of the organization is to provide resources to the Southeast Chicago community, from a holistic approach that impacts the entire family. “We started it because we saw a great need in our community.

A lot of services, there were gaps. And, we felt we could fill those needs as much as we could,” she said.

Food distribution is one of Imani’s signature programs. The organization is part of the produce mobile with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Once a month, it hosts a produce giveaway. Dawn Hodges said families leave with five to six grocery bags of free fresh produce.

Rev. Hodges said the organization also feeds the homeless, as well as donates food to shelters. He said the church has been doing food distribution for a long time, almost 30 years.

There is a different atmosphere of need

in the community and the organization is trying to meet that need, he added.

The mentoring program is geared towards boys and young men. Before the pandemic, the group would meet twice a week, Mondays for basketball and on Wednesdays for group mentoring sessions. It is currently being held virtually. Hodges said they were trying to make it work because they didn’t want to lose the boys.

Imani also facilitates workshops on how to interact with the police.

Participants are trained on the proper way to deal with the police as well as what rights they have. Rev. Hodges said a moment that touched his heart was when he went into a school and the young men knew the presenter from the church because they had participated in the mentoring program. He said seeing this really made him feel good, knowing that they are touching the lives of the young

men and building relationships with them. The program helps keep the young men healthy, encourages them and keeps them focused on going to college, he continued.

Imani is also working with Cabrini Green Legal Aid to do record expungements. Dawn Hodges said there are 28 slots devoted to that.

Another program is the out of school time program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program takes place after school and during the summer. Students in the program are offered tutoring as well as anti-bullying and self-esteem workshops. Dawn Hodges said because of COVID-19, the summer session was done virtually. She said it was a good time.

Rev. Hodges said Imani was able to

secure a grant for a psychologist. He said this initiative helped keep students from getting sent home due to behavioral issues. “We really have a sincere concern about our young people and that’s what we endeavor to do,” he said.

“We try to give an outlet for young people to occupy their time.”

Dawn Hodges said the holistic approach includes having an impact on the entire family. She said she found that children’s behavior was always a direct reflection of what is going on at home. “If I can hit the whole family with the holistic approach, then you are invoking change,” she said.

“When we impact the whole family, it’s [a] more sustainable change and the difference is made to the whole community and it trickles down.”

The 2021 Global Scientific Summit on COVID-19 will bring together top global scientists and health experts discussing the latest discoveries, evidence-based insights and best practices for living in a world with COVID-19, and will build on a well-received similar forum hosted last year by WTTC and Carnival Corporation. This year’s event will continue those discussions and build on global and industry-wide understanding of COVID-19’s impact on society, including how to safely live in a world with COVID-19.

The event will be of interest to global tourism leaders, WTTC Members, government agencies, destination partners, trade and private businesses who want to hear up-to-the-minute scientific and medical research that can be used to inform practical, adaptable and science-based solutions for mitigating COVID-19, in order to move beyond the pandemic.

Topics will focus on vast knowledge of COVID-19, informing a post-pandemic world This unique virtual summit, co-hosted by WTTC and Carnival Corporation with supporting sponsor Hilton, is free to attend, and open to the public. The event will focus on the most up-to-date science amassed

from the past year of studying COVID-19, including how best to address the many ongoing questions about how the virus will affect society, travel and day-to-day activities moving forward. Help Wanted: Why Women Should Consider Careers in Manufacturing

Women represent a vast, untapped talent pool for the manufacturing industry.

In 2016, women made up 47 percent of the American labor force, but only 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce, according to a survey conducted by The Manufacturing Institute, APICS and Deloitte.

“Many women don’t realize the possibilities for personal and professional satisfaction and a stable career in the manufacturing industry,” says Julie Davis, Association of Equipment Manufacturing director of workforce development. “Women who need to reposition their post COVID-19 careers should step forward into manufacturing.”

Reasons for women to consider a career in manufacturing include: - Financial: Wages for women in manufacturing tend to exceed those paid in traditional female-filled positions.

- Educational: Money is available from many businesses for retraining women for manufacturing jobs. Given

the job losses many women have experienced in industries hurt by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, such as the restaurant, hospitality, and other service industries, the manufacturing industry offers an opportunity to learn new skills and embark on a new and sustainable career path.

- Practical. Many manufacturing jobs that used to demand more in terms of size and strength no longer apply; the adoption of technology means new, high-tech jobs that level the playing field for male and female employees.

- Inclusive. The manufacturing industry is committed to diversity and inclusion. For example, safety equipment is now available in women’s sizes to reflect the changing demographics of the industry and desire to reach out to women about the benefits of manufacturing careers.
