NEWS briefly EDUCATION MILTON JONES OF PEACHTREE PROVIDENCE PARTNERS NAMED CHAIR OF UNCF BOARD Atlanta business and civic leader Milton H. Jones, Jr. has been elected chair of the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Board of Directors, becoming the first African American to hold that position.

Jones succeeds William F. Stasior, Sr., retired chairman and CEO of Booz Allen Hamilton, who served as UNCF’s Chair for 11 years. Former Chairs of the UNCF board include: John D. EXPOSURE TO FLAME RETARDANTS EARLY IN PREGNANCY LINKED TO PREMATURE BIRTH Expectant women are more likely to give birth early if they have high blood levels of a chemical used in flame retardants compared with those who have limited exposure, a new study finds.

These polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used in the manufacture of furniture, carpeting, and other products to reduce flammability. Previous studies have found that the substances can leach into household dust and build up in the body where they may interfere with the thyroid, an organ that secretes brain-developing hormones. Childhood exposure to PBDEs has been linked to learning disabilities, autistic symptoms, and behavioral issues, among other developmental problems.

IMMIGRANT JUSTICE CORPS ANNOUNCES SEVENTH CLASS OF JUSTICE FELLOWS Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC), the country’s first fellowship program wholly dedicated to meeting immigrants’ need for high-quality legal assistance, recently announced its seventh class of Justice Fellows. Selected for their compassion, intellect, and commitment to immigrants’ rights, the 2021 Justice Fellows will bring their many skills to bear on the acute representation crisis in immigration.

Twenty-eight graduates from top law schools and with impressive experience from around the country were chosen for the prestigious Fellowship at IJC. The Class of 2021 Justice Fellows come to IJC with stellar backgrounds, including education in the nation’s most well-regarded immigration law programs and years of cumulative experience as client advocates.

The Fellows will serve for two years as staff attorneys at strategically selected legal services agencies and community-based organizations across the country, providing legal assistance to low-income immigrants in an array of immigration matters including deportation defense and affirmative applications for those fleeing persecution.

Mark Walker parlayed his successful Oooh Wee Sweet Tea business into a carry out restaurant in Burnham, Ill., last October. Now, Oooh Wee It Is has a location at 33 E. 83rd St. Walker said he spent a lot of years in Chatham, his family home is in the neighborhood. He said when the opportunity to purchase the location became available, he jumped on it. The site was once Mather’s More Than a Café.

Walker said he was up against some people who also wanted the space. Some of those plans included a church, a day care, as well as another restaurant. In the end, Walker was able to get the site.

Walker said he and his wife, Shae, collaborated on the menu. He said they knew they wanted to offer soul food, but wanted to do something different.

“You’ve got a lot of different soul food restaurants that have been staples in the community, down through the years, but they never did anything different. It was just always the norm. So, we decided to do soul food with a twist,” he said.

Walker said he wanted to cater to the “seasoned citizens” as well as to the millennials. The menu includes lamb chops, fried lobster, oxtails and grits, fried green tomatoes and smothered shrimp and rice.

“We do Hennessy and Patron wings, just to get that other crowd in and get people a taste of something different, that you wouldn’t get in your own community,” he said.

Walker said the most popular items on the menu are the pot roast and the Hennessy wings. He said those are the top sellers. Oooh Wee It Is also features local Black-owned food products that include Michele’s Syrup, Riley’s Ribz Sauces and

Essie Marie’s Dressing & Marinade. These items are also for sale at the restaurant.

“I’ve been following a motto down through the years since I started business six years ago, whenever I get to the top, wherever that is, I would make sure there were some people there I know … It was just my thought to get other people who offered any and everything to sell,” he said.

Walker said the opportunity is available for other local Black-owned food products to get featured at the restaurant. He said he wanted to give others an opportunity to launch their products and sell their products.

Before Oooh Wee It Is opened, there was a Thanksgiving Meal giveaway for the seniors. It also hosted a Valentine’s Day meal giveaway and love token. Walker said he plans to do it at the restaurants locations as long as they are open.

“We know there’s no way we can continue to thrive without a strong customer base and without giving to the community we serve,” he said.

Walker said there are plans to open another Oooh Wee It Is in Maywood and in another suburb. He said the buzz about the restaurant has been phenomenal.

He has opened two locations during the COVID-19 pandemic in less than a year.

He said there are shirts at the Chatham location that read, “Pandemic Where?”

“We have yet to experience the pandemic in terms of our customer base. We’re constantly growing, lines constantly out the door,” he said. “We just feel like it’s a need, it’s a void for good food, good customer service and great presentation. And, that’s what we strive to offer.”

Southwest Airlines expands northwest from MIA for springtime After launching its first Miami flights last November, Southwest Airlines recently expanded its route network from Miami International Airport by adding daily service to four more destinations: Atlanta; Dallas; Denver; and Nashville. The new routes increase Southwest’s already strong presence at MIA to a total of 16 daily flights.

Governor talks budget, executive authority, relationship with lawmakers

85% of women have witnessed harassment and online violence, finds new research from The Economist Intelligence Unit The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released a new study supported by Jigsaw, a unit within Google that forecasts and confronts emerging digital threats, delving into the prevalence and impact of online violence against women on a global scale. “Measuring the prevalence of online violence against women” reveals that nearly 40% of women surveyed have been harassed online whilst the vast majority (85%) have witnessed harassment or other forms of online violence.

Undertaken to enable informed decision-making on the issue of online violence, to better understand women’s experiences online, and to measure the tactics and trends of online violence, the research also demonstrates the impact of online violence in silencing female voices.

Half of women surveyed said that the internet is not a safe place for them to express their thoughts and opinions. 32% of women reconsidered posting a comment online, 30% reduced their online presence, and 20% stopped using that online platform entirely.

“Measuring the prevalence of online violence against women” further found that online violence against women should be seen on the same continuum as offline violence, with more than half of women (54%) knowing their online attackers, and nearly three-quarters (74%) expressing particular concern about online abuse escalating to offline threats.

According to the results, underreporting likely hides the real numbers with only 1 in 4 women reporting abuse to the platform(s) on which it occurred and only 14% reporting it to an offline protective agency. 78% are often unaware that options exist to report harmful online behaviors.

This trend is underpinned by the fact that 6 in 10 women surveyed indicated a sense of helplessness, as little is done to combat the issue. The evidence base supports this, in 64 of 86 countries studied in The Web Index, law enforcement agencies and courts appear to be failing to take appropriate corrective actions to address online violence against women.

Key highlights: * 38% reported personal experiences with online harassment * 65% reported knowing women in their

network who had been targeted online * 85% have witnessed online violence against other women (including from outside their networks) * Younger women are more likely to have experienced online violence: 45% Generation Z and Millennials versus 31% for Generation X and Baby Boomers * Only 1 in 4 women reported online abuse to the platform(s) on which it occurred, and only 14% reported it to an offline protective agency * 54% of women who experienced online abuse knew their attackers, and nearly 74% expressed particular concern about online abuse escalating to offline threats * 6 in 10 women surveyed indicated a sense of helplessness as little is done to combat the issue * 35% of women reported mental health issues as a result of experiencing online violence * 92% of women reported that online violence harms their sense of well-being “The internet can provide a vital space for women seeking expression and opportunity but this report shows that the high prevalence of online violence against women is forcing self-censorship, and limiting women’s representation in societal, political and economic discussions and decisions. The covid-19 pandemic has led to significant increases in internet use, further exacerbating the situation. Through this granular measurement of the prevalence of online violence against women, we aim to enable timely, synchronised multi-stakeholder action on the issue” said Vaibhav Sahgal, senior manager, The Economist Intelligence Unit.

The results were compiled from a survey undertaken by The EIU in the year between May 2019 to May 2020. It included 4,561 women, across 51 countries, using an innovative prevalence-estimation modelling methodology. The study assessed prevalence across nine threat tactics often used in combination by online attackers: misinformation and defamation, cyber-harassment, hate speech, impersonation, hacking and stalking, video- and image-based abuse, doxing, violent threats, and astroturfing.

The prevalence of each tactic was measured at three levels: personal, community and witnessed.

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker says he will consider ideas for directing hundreds of millions of new dollars toward K-12 education in the upcoming fiscal year, but proponents of such spending must offer up ways to cut government spending or raise necessary revenues elsewhere.

He recently made those comments in an interview with Capitol News Illinois, one of several interviews he did with news organizations to mark one year since the COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life for residents of Illinois and beyond.

“If somebody proposes an idea for spending new money…or continuing the tax expenditures of corporate welfare, I’m open to conversations and discussions about that,” Pritzker said regarding his proposed state budget. “But they’ve got to tell me what else it is that they want to cut or where they’re going to come up with revenue to make sure that we can balance the budget.”

Pritzker also discussed whether the pandemic has affected his relationship with lawmakers and whether his use of executive authority over the past year has redefined the powers of the governorship.

He said while some Republicans have “politicized” the pandemic, he believes he and Democrats in the General Assembly have a united focus as to where money should be spent.

“I think we all have the same goals here,” he said. “And what we want to do is make sure we fund education properly, that we do everything we can for social services and providing health care for people across the state. And then fiscal responsibility is something we all have to be focused on.”

Still, he said, the pandemic has made budgeting difficult, and the state should be careful when allocating more than $7 billion in funding it will receive from the American Rescue Plan, a recent pandemic relief package passed by the federal government.

Pritzker said the federal funds should be treated as a one-time infusion that shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for the base revenues needed to maintain state programs.

The state has borrowed more than $3 billion from the Federal Reserve in response to the pandemic in previous fiscal years, and Pritzker said repaying those loans is a priority.

“We have to make sure we pay the bills, any bills that are owed as a result of COVID,” he said. “And then I think we need to focus our dollars on igniting the economy, making sure that we’re doing everything we can to get people back to work and to attract businesses and get businesses going.

All of that is, I think, incumbent upon us with these dollars.“ He also warned the state will have “lingering expenses and expenditures as a result

of COVID” in upcoming fiscal years.

“These are going to typically be health care related. And so we just need to account for that as we look at what to do with the dollars that are being provided,” he said.

Conversations are already ongoing with lawmakers as to how to allocate the funding, he said. The money must be allocated by the end of the year but can be spent until 2024, the governor said.

Pritzker also touched on his desired changes to the corporate tax code, which are necessary to balance his proposed budget.

The tax changes include a temporary cap on net operating loss deductions that is expected to net more than $300 million, canceling a planned phaseout of the corporate franchise tax to net $30 million, and ending lower tax rates for foreign-sourced dividends to bring in more than $100 million.

There are six other corporate changes as well which will require action from lawmakers.

When asked if Democratic lawmakers are on board with the changes, Pritzker said most of the resistance has come from “the business lobbyist groups, like the Chamber of Commerce, like the Manufacturers Association, and no doubt, they put pressure on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.”

“They’re very powerful, they have money.

And they can, you know, lead legislators to even vote for things that are against their interests or against the interests of their constituents. But I think the most important thing is that we’ve got to balance the budget,” he said.

Pritzker first issued a stay-at-home order almost exactly one year ago and has since issued dozens of executive orders in response to the pandemic. Asked if his use of executive authority has redefined the governorship, Pritzker downplayed the idea.

“Well, I think it’s precisely what past governors have done, as you’ve seen in the past, when there’s been a flood, for example, you know, floods don’t end at 30 days, floods end whenever the flood recedes,” he said.

“And the same thing is true about coronavirus. You know, we’ve had to react to it…this is the most unusual thing that anybody’s ever seen in the history of the United States in terms of an emergency, including the pandemic in 1918.”

“It’s important to recognize that, you know, how we handled it when the legislature was not in session and chose not to be in session was to do what other governors have done, which is treat it like an emergency, do whatever it is that we needed to do to save lives,” he added.

He also noted that with existing vaccine infrastructure he believes the state will be able to open vaccinations up to all Illinoisans by May 1 or even sooner, a goal set by President Joe Biden earlier this month. “I feel very confident that we can meet that date. And I think we might be able to do a little bit better,” Pritzker said.

NEWS Public Engagement Phase of “Chicago Monuments and Public Art Project” lets Chicagoans join the conversation about monumental sculptures, artworks and commemorative plaques The City of Chicago, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Chicago Park District (Parks) and Chicago Public Schools (CPS), recently launched the Chicago Monuments Project website at chicagomonuments.org, which kicked off the public engagement phase of the Chicago Monuments Project that will conclude in April. The new website identifies monumental sculptures, artworks and commemorative plaques on the public way and in Chicago parks selected by the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee for further review. Chicagoans can join the conversation by submitting feedback through the website, virtual events and one-onone conversations.

“This project is a powerful opportunity for us to come together as a city to assess the many monuments and memorials across our neighborhoods and communities—to face our history and what and how we memorialize that history,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Given the past year and in particular the past summer that made clear history isn’t past, it is essential that residents are a part of this conversation. This project is about more than a single statue or

mural, it’s about channeling our city’s dynamic civic energy to permanently memorialize our shared values, history and heritage as Chicagoans in an open and democratic way.”

The Chicago Monuments Project is the city’s first effort to grapple with the often unacknowledged – or forgotten – history associated with the city’s various municipal art collections and provides a vehicle to address the hard truths of Chicago’s racial history, confront the ways in which that history has and has not been memorialized and develop a framework for marking public space that elevates new ways to memorialize Chicago’s true and complete history.

Using feedback collected through the upcoming public art and engagement efforts, the city, along with various stakeholder groups, will create a plan to erect a series of new monuments that equitably acknowledge Chicago’s shared history.

The Chicago Monuments Project also seeks project ideas from individual artists and/or community groups for the development of new monuments that rethink the place, purpose and permanence of monuments in our public spaces. Dead-

Leading this review of monuments is the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee, a group of community leaders, artists, architects, scholars, curators and city officials who have dedicated their time, experience and expertise. The committee, announced in August 2020, is co-chaired by Mark Kelly, commissioner of DCASE, Bonnie McDonald, president & CEO of Landmarks Illinois and Jennifer Scott, director/chief curator of Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

“The Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee has considered hundreds of the city’s sculptures and plaques in this critically important process,” said DCASE Commissioner and Advisory Committee Co-Chair Mark Kelly. “The City’s public art collection is a defining characteristic of Chicago and it should reflect and respect all Chicagoans. Chicagoans are also invited to pre-register to participate in discussions with Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee Members, where they can ask questions, share their thoughts and learn more about the Chicago Monuments Project. Space will be limited to 20 community members per drop-in session.

The Chicago Monuments Project also seeks proposals from community partners to host and facilitate public conversations about the city’s monuments. Programs can address a specific artwork(s) identified by the Chicago Monuments Advisory Committee and/or present open platforms for a constructive dialogue about previously untold, erased or obscured narratives in the telling of Chicago’s history and the development of new monuments.

Program proposals will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee, and a select number of proposals will be identified to receive a $1,500 stipend toward

program production. Additional public program details will be updated in the upcoming weeks. “We urge residents and groups to share their perspectives, in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Public participation is critical to our success, not only in examining Chicago’s public art collection but also healing our city,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly.

CPS will lead a separate, but aligned, process to review their extensive collection of artworks. CPS is currently in the final stages of creating a Works of Art Steering Committee that will meet quarterly to review concerns about specific works of art raised by members of the CPS community. The committee will work with students, teachers, school leaders and advocacy groups to recommend and advise school communities on actions related to the collection.

6 Things to Know About GMOs Family Features) You may have heard of “GMO” foods before, but what you may not know is the science and purpose behind them.

“GMO” is a common term used to describe foods that have been created through genetic engineering. A GMO (genetically modified organism) is a plant, animal or microorganism that has had its genetic material (DNA) changed using technology that generally involves the transfer of specific DNA from one organism to another.

Although GMO foods are widely available to consumers, there is sometimes confusion around what GMOs are and how they are used in the United States’ food supply.

As part of the Feed Your Mind education initiative, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides science-based information to help consumers better understand GMOs: 1. Only a few types of GMO foods are sold in the United States.Soybeans, cotton, corn, alfalfa, apples, canola, papaya, potatoes, summer

squash, sugar beets, pineapple and AquAdvantage salmon complete the list of GMO foods currently sold in the U.S. Only a few of these are available in the produce sections of grocery stores. Most are instead used to make ingredients that are then used in other food products like cereals and snack chips.

2. GMOs can help farmers grow crops that are resistant to diseases and insects. Humans have used traditional ways to modify crops and animals to suit their needs and tastes for more than 10,000 years. Genetic engineering lets scientists take a beneficial gene, like insect resistance, and transfer it into a plant. Results can include higher crop yields, less crop loss, longer storage life, better appearance, better nutrition or some combination of these traits.

3. GMO foods are as safe to eat as their non-GMO counterparts. The FDA, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture work together to make sure GMOs are safe for human, plant and animal health. GMO foods are

carefully studied before being sold to the public to make sure they are safe.

Some GMO plants have even been modified to improve their nutritional value. For example, some GMO soybeans contain healthier oils, which can replace oils containing trans fat.

4. GMO foods are no more likely to cause allergies than non-GMOs. You will not be allergic to a GMO food unless you’re allergic to the non-GMO version of that food. For example, if you’re not allergic to foods made with non-GMO soy, you won’t be allergic to foods made with GMO soy. When developing GMOs, scientists run tests to make sure allergens aren’t transferred from one food to another.

5. GMOs can reduce farmers’ use of pesticides. Some GMO plants contain plant-incorporated protectants to make them resistant to insects.

This lowers farmers’ need for and use of spray pesticides.

6. A “bioengineered” disclosure will be on some of the foods you eat. The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard requires

In fact, borrowers who refinanced in 2020 to lower their mortgage rate saved over $2,800 in mortgage payments annually, according to the latest Freddie Mac research.

“While today’s low mortgage rates have fueled a refinance boom, it’s been driven mainly by higher-income borrowers. With millions of borrowers eligible to refinance, lower- and middleincome borrowers who could stand to benefit the most from refinancing might be leaving money on the table,” says Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist.

To determine whether refinancing makes financial sense for you, it’s essential to first understand the basics.

Here’s what to know about the refinancing process: • Understanding refinancing: When refinancing your mortgage, you are essentially applying for a new mortgage with the goal of securing a loan with better terms than your current one.

Primarily, people refinance their mortgages for three reasons: to lower their interest rate, to switch from one product to another (i.e. switch from an adjustable-rate mortgage to a fixedrate mortgage) or switch to a loan with a shorter term.

• Determining refinancing costs: While refinancing can save you money, it isn’t free. Just as there are closing costs and associated fees with your current mortgage, there are related costs to refinance your loan. To get a sense of what refinancing could cost

you, use Freddie Mac’s refinance calculator, which is available at calculators.freddiemac.com.

• Knowing your options: The refinancing option that is best for you will depend on your financial situation and goals. The most common option is to refinance the remaining unpaid balance on your mortgage. Through refinancing, you can improve your financial position by shortening your term or locking in a lower interest rate. Your lender will be able to discuss refinancing options with you and help determine the best solution for your situation.

• Closing your loan: Closing on your new loan is the final step in the refinancing process, a procedure that is almost identical to when you initially

closed on your current mortgage.

During closing, it’s important that you take your time to read all documents carefully and ask clarifying questions.

Once all of the closing documents are signed, you will have a new loan.
