briefly COLLINS PASSES BILL TO STRENGTHEN WORKER PROTECTIONS

CHICAGO — As part of her continued advocacy for workers’ rights, state Rep. Lakesia Collins, D-Chicago, passed legislation to steepen penalties for employers who violate the One Day Rest in Seven Act. “The One Day Rest in Seven Act is an essential tool in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of workers across the state,” said Collins. “Increasing the penalties for violating this regulation underscores the importance of treating workers with the respect and dignity they deserve.”

Collins passed Senate Bill 3146, which installs a two-tier penalty system for employers who do not comply with the one-day rest period and meal period requirement. Under the bill, individuals who work longer than 7.5 hours are entitled to a 20-minute meal period every 4.5 hours, and employees are granted a rest day after any 7 consecutive days. The bill also requires every employer to post a “Know Your Rights” poster in the workplace and online for remote/traveling workers.

Senate Bill 3146 passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and now heads to the Governor for consideration.

CHICAGO — Related Midwest announced that it has completed a land transfer to the Discovery Partners Institute, which will anchor the innovation district in Chicago’s newest neighborhood, The 78, with a 300,000-square-foot research and innovation center.

The interdisciplinary hub and magnet for technology investment, led by the University of Illinois System, is projected to break ground in 2023 and open in 2026.

The Discovery Partners Institute will prepare young people, especially women and people of color, for careers in technology, fund research and development teams, and launch new ventures based on University of Illinois System research. The team has grown to about 45 people with eight positions open and has recently doubled its current headquarters at 200 S. Wacker Drive. Related’s one-acre land donation will enable DPI to attract and retain top talent in Chicago, with certain option rights to expand at The 78.

The 78 will transform 62 acres of undeveloped riverfront land into a vibrant downtown mixed-use community drawing inspiration from Chicago’s existing 77 neighborhoods. The 78 will expand the heart of Chicago southward, connecting the South Loop with Chinatown, Bronzeville with Pilsen, and providing industry-leading companies with a rare downtown campus opportunity that looks to the future of innovation while embracing the city’s rich history.

Approved for 13 million square feet of mixed use space, The 78 will include the capacity for more than 20,000 people to work onsite, drawing on Related’s proven track record of dynamic mixed-use projects. The 78’s forward-looking design incorporates multiple infrastructure improvements to support commuters and draw visitors, including a new pedestrian- and bike-friendly road, the new Wells-Wentworth Connector, that will link the Loop to Chinatown. It also extends Chicago’s famed Riverwalk, with a halfmile of entertainment-optimized riverfront space for visitors of all ages.

DPI’s building is funded with a $235 million commitment from the State of Illinois, $23.5 million of which has been released thus far to support design and development. Further, the Pritzker Foundation has gifted $10 million to establish the Pritzker Tech Talent Labs at DPI. Other funders include the CME Group Foundation, Apple and Google.

Community organizations receive portion of $2.7 million for development projects Continued from page 1

Community Desk Chicago, also known as the Desk, was founded in 2019, with the goal to understand roadblocks that exist for communities when it comes to moving projects forward. It is housed at Chicago Community Trust.

The Desk focuses on advocacy, from an ecosystem perspective and on a project level. It advocates to support projects that are very challenging to get funded in neighborhoods – wealth building opportunities and those that improve quality of life. On the ecosystem level, the Desk advocates for system change, tackling issues surrounding loans and loan values. It looks for solutions in regards to capital issues and funding going into neighborhoods. A big body of the work is to support community investment vehicles, trying to figure out how can The Desk assist communities in pooling their capital to acquire property.

“We really want to position communities to control their own destinies and move beyond a community plan, actually implement that plan,” said Ja’Net Defell, director of T The Desk spends a lot of time being a conduit between community projects and funders. The Desk helps projects by prepping communities on how to use the language necessary to get funding for their projects. It also connects communities to resources and capital.

The three organizations were chosen because of their reputation, their position in the community and their prominence in the community. The neighborhoods of these organizations also have been struggling with gentrification and are underserved in a technical assistance perspective.

In South Shore, Defell said that the community is primed because of its proximity to the Obama Presidential Center, and Lake Michigan, to take action in terms of activating a lot of blighted and vacant buildings.

Tonya Trice, executive of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce has been active with the Small Business

Advocacy Council to address the vacancy issues. The Desk wants to support Trice and her team in thinking about how to activate 71st Street and improve the quality of life for residents to create walkable, livable communities.

The South Shore Community Development Corporation was founded as the community-focused arm of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce in 2019. Both entities provide supportive services to entrepreneurs and small businesses in the South Shore community.

“We will help to create more community-led development and wealth building efforts. The two organizations kind of work hand-in-hand to make sure we are empowering South Shore with the right tools and capital necessary for economic development and growth,” Trice said.

Small business owners and entrepreneurs in the community were in need of access to more capital and more broader initiatives that benefits the small business owners, as well as other residents, so they had a voice in what development initiatives into the community.

With the funds from The Desk’s Neighborhood Initiative, the South Shore Chamber CDC will focus on real estate development projects, as well as broader economic development initiatives that will benefit the entire South Shore community.

Trice believes that South Shore is well-positioned for the revitalization of its commercial corridors and the momentum is there. There are several local developer initiatives underway. The South Shore Chamber CDC is preparing to be a strong development collaborator and leader in the area.

“We want to focus on the residents that are currently in the community, working to make sure they have the best quality of life available, and we are building our capacity to make sure we serve as the glue that binds the community together. We also want to make sure the voices of the residents in the community are listed and made a part of any projects that come into South Shore, and that we uplift and preserve the culture of the South Shore community in doing so,” Trice said.

Jesse White Announces 18th Annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced today that entry forms are available for the 18th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competition Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.

“We created the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition to promote creative writing and provide an outlet for talented writers,” White said. “Great poems have the ability to enrich and enhance our lives, and I am looking forward to celebrating talented poets with this year’s competition.”

The competition is named in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks, and is co-sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book and Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson.

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18

and over. Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2022.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($500), second ($300) and third place ($100). Winning poems will be submitted for possible publication in the “Ninth Letter” literary arts journal, “Quiddity International Literary Journal and Public Radio Program” and “RHINO Poetry” magazine.

Winners of the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition have gone on to achieve other great accomplishments, including winning other prestigious competitions, writing screenplays and publishing books.

CHICAGO – On Thursday, April 7, President Obama spoke with 450 students in the auditorium of Hyde Park Academy High School as part of the Obama Foundation Futures Series, conversations designed to expose high school students to different professions within various industries. The series seeks to deepen the students’ understanding of career pathways through intimate conversations with accomplished leaders about their experiences and valuable learning lessons.

During the hour-long conversation, Hyde Park Academy students had the opportunity to directly ask the President questions about his early career decisions, his time in office, and the unexpected turns he encountered along the way.

“I didn’t have a clear cut path to becoming the President of the United States, I took many roads to get to where I am today and it took me a while to get there,” said President Obama. “There is so much pressure around what you’re going to do when you grow up and the truth is you have room and time to explore a bunch of ideas. You all are so young and you shouldn’t feel bad that you haven’t figured it out yet.”

The Futures Series began in February 2022.

The Foundation collaborated with the school’s student advisory committee to help outline session format, curate speakers, and identify career paths students are eager to learn more about, from arts and entertainment to business and entrepreneurship and from science and technology to public service. Sessions typically welcome 35-50 students across grade levels, who are selected by Hyde Park Academy teachers, counselors, and the principal, to participate in conversations based on their career aspirations. LIGHTFORD: BUDGET PROVIDES SOLID ECONOMIC RECOVERY FOR HARDWORKING ILLINOISANS

Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) released the following statement after the Senate passed its Fiscal Year 2023 budget Saturday: “Building on our recent economic decisions, this budget has the largest surplus we’ve seen in years. We are using these additional funds to provide stability to more than 95% of taxpayers.

“We are succeeding in paying our debts by meeting our pension obligations, saving taxpayers over a billion dollars, and fully funding College Illinois. In addition, to address violence in our communities, we are allocating funding to the Reimagine Public Safety Act. “I also worked diligently to allocate more funding for the Department of Human Services programs such as early intervention, parents too soon, and healthy families.

Also, to better serve our students’ success, I increased our early childhood education by more than ten percent and expanded our evidence-based funding model for K-12 students.

“We even increased mental health treatment services to address health crisis and enhanced our senior citizens’ care. This budget keeps on track with meeting our financial obligations and helps us on the road back to normalcy and economic recovery.”
