producers notes TINA BOYER BROWN - ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CREATIVE WRITING HEAD Please enjoy Director Scott Westerman’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. We strive to create meaningful artistic experiences with ChiArts’ scholar-artists in any environment. Being an artist means being able to adapt to one’s circumstance, assess the landscape, and create work that reflects or extends our perceptions. To this end, this year’s senior play uses our current circumstance and infrastructure to chart new waters in ChiArts’ Theatre program.

ANNIE CALHOUN - THEATRE CONSERVATORY HEAD Our Theatre Department adopted the theme of Resilient Connection during this year of virtual learning. I’m so very proud of the resilience of this cast to take on a Shakespeare text while remote. I’m proud of their commitment to connection with their cast. They have overcome wifi, illness and filming obstacles. The class of 2021 is inspiring, joyful, and has a special place in my heart. Thanks to Mr. Westerman for his vision and creativity. Thanks to Mr. Bracken for his above and beyond help on this project. Thanks to Ms. Boyer Brown for her guidance and leadership!

directors note SCOTT WESTERMAN - THEATRE CONSERVATORY INSTRUCTOR This shortened and deconstructed production of The Tempest demonstrates magic in the modern age. A small faction of doxxed hackers, who call themselves Prospero, have cooked up a terrible revenge for the people who harmed them.

With the help of their AI assistant, Ariel, and a native virtual troll, Caliban, Prospero creates a power surge - an electrical, magical storm - which traps their foes on a virtual island, unable to access apps or social media or email or anything on the internet.

This production was born out of the last year, when every person we know has felt a collective loss of connection and has come to heavily rely on modern tools of connectivity. The concept leans into the technology we must use to tell the story. The audience will experience watching it in the same way the actors had to perform it: at home, through a screen, in isolation. In doing so, perhaps a connection can be made, even with 400 year old text, between actor and audience as we separately navigate new forms and experiences together.
