PRODUCER’S NOTE ANNIE CALHOUN THEATRE DEPARTMENT HEAD

The class of Theatre class of 2021 is particularly meaningful to me, as I was able to teach them as 9th graders and follow their growth over four years. The Musical Theatre class of 2021 has an incredible bond - one that has emerged from their courage, drive, compassion, risk taking and amazing sense of collective humor. I am incredibly proud of their artistic work individually and collectively over the past four years. I am in AWE of their resilience this year. I am also in awe of their incredible teachers; Ms. Slavick, Mr. Corlew, Ms. Tucker and Mr. Westerman. The 2021 MTs SHOWED UP with creativity and joy in a year that dealt a crushing blow to theatre students used to collaborating with voice and body daily. I will miss them very much. The entire 2021 Theatre Class, both MT and Actors will hold a special spot with me for years to come. To my MT’s as you take your final bow, as Brene Brown likes to say, “Stay awkward, brave and kind.”

As we are all really glad to see the end of the quarantine, the Graduating Musical Theatre Majors and I chose to create this Vaudeville as our way of defiantly reclaiming joy; that it should be playful, fun, even silly. After the extraordinary labor of trying to move our art online, could we just have fun? I hope we’ve succeeded and we have passed some of that joy on to you.
