DIRECTOR’S NOTE DR. BROOKS TRULY CHIARTS PERCUSSION COORDINATOR This has been a challenging and interesting year, to say the least. Rather than having rehearsals and learning music and developing our ensemble skills, we spent most of the year working on parts in isolation, learning how to interpret and play to click tracks, devising optimal camera angles and watching our pre-recorded performances, rather than performing them live. Without the ability to have public concerts, or even be in the same room, due to Covid-19, we had to figure out how to make a performance work. Luckily, each student has a mallet instrument and snare drum at home (as well as some other instruments) so we were able to do a good selection of literature. I would select the music and create a click track, the students would prepare their parts individually and then record them to the click track using their personal cell phones!

No special mics or cameras, just their phones and the occasional computer. They would then send me the clips and I would put them together to create the performances you are about to see. What’s even more unbelievable is the fact that some of these students had never even met when we made these! It’s quite extraordinary do be able to do something like this with the technology we have today. All things considered, we had a pretty productive, successful year and hopefully this is something we can look back on as a positive during this bizarre time.
