We are honored to present the Anne de Xainctonge Award to

Mary Burke Heyman ‘55

10

Anne de Xainctonge Award Mary Burke Heyman ‘55 After graduating from Notre Dame in 1955, Mary Burke Heyman attended Fordham University, earning an MS in Secondary Education. She married Thomas Heyman soon after graduating, and the couple moved to Washington, DC, where Tom was pursuing a law degree. Upon their return to New York City, Mary taught English in Brooklyn while pursuing graduate studies at Brooklyn College. The Heymans’ family was growing, and they had six children between 1961 and 1971. Mary and a partner started an antiques business in Montclair, NJ, where the family had relocated. They regularly traveled to England and France to buy inventory; and their shop, The Ivory Bird, thrived for 40 years. Mary has been very active in her town’s civic life, specifically in the process of integrating schools, and working for affordable housing. For ten years she led a vibrant high school religious education program. Teachers held classes in Scripture, Liturgy, and Christian Morality, in their homes, (one of them hers, with her husband, Tom, as instructor). The Heymans helped form their town’s first parish council; and the study and implementation of the Vatican Council was an integral part of their efforts. Now retired, they spend time in both Montclair and Rhode Island, where Mary loves to read and garden. It was in Rhode Island, as a child, that Mary first was introduced to the Sisters of St. Ursula and the reason she was later encouraged to apply to Notre Dame for high school. Mary says she never would have been able to attend ND without the scholarship she received, and she feels a real obligation to give back to the school today. She well remembers the beauty of the buildings on 79th Street: the original wood work and fireplaces, the deep set windows, the inspiring chapel, and the roomy mirrored closets. Formal dinner dances were held in the ballroom, under the careful eyes of the Sisters. She remembers regular visits from Jesuit priests, who enlarged her understanding of her faith and introduced her to the importance of service and justice work. Mother Genevieve made a big impression, with her love of art, her lessons on its history, her introductions to NYC museums, and her lectures on the architectural gems of the city. Mary described this aspect of her education as an “unbelievable exposure to culture that has lasted a lifetime.” Mary notes that no one ever stopped students at Notre Dame from having big ideas. Failure was part of the learning process and a reason to try again. She hopes the school continues to foster excellence for young women and continues to be guided by the philosophy of Anne de Xainctonge. Notre Dame changed Mary’s life. Her generosity throughout the years has certainly helped Notre Dame reach students in underserved communities and make a Notre Dame education possible for them so they can have the same transformative high school experience she did. Congratulations, Mary. Ad multos annos. Ti amiamo!!

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Angel Award to

Julia Pilcer Lichtenstein, Esq.

12

Chez Nous Angel Award Julia Pilcer Lichtenstein, Esq.

Julia Pilcer Lichtenstein has long been an advocate for access and equity in education. She is an attorney with the law firm WilmerHale where she focuses on complex litigation matters at both the state and federal levels. In addition, she maintains an active pro bono practice in areas including women’s rights and immigration. She has worked on issues brought before the Supreme Court, especially an appeal of the federal death penalty. Formerly, Julia served as a clerk for the Honorable Katherine Polk Failla of the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York. There she managed both civil and criminal cases. A graduate of the New York University School of Law, Johns Hopkins University, and the Dalton School, Julia knows the value of alumnae loyalty and of a strong alumnae network. As the daughter of Notre Dame trustee, Dr. Grace Pilcer, Julia has followed and supported Notre Dame alongside her mother from an early age. She values an independent school education, especially for young women and actively supports full access and inclusion for all Notre Dame students. Notre Dame is very grateful for Julia’s leadership gift. It is our hope that our students are inspired by her professional success and her care for our community.

13

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to Amy Bell P’22 & P’24

14

Chez Nous Parent Award

Amy Bell is a stay-at-home mother to three children: Paige (17), Logan (15), and Harrison (12). She grew up in New Jersey and attended De Paul High School in Wayne, New Jersey. After high school she went on to James Madison University, where she earned a BA in Psychology, graduating cum laude. Upon graduation in 1997, she moved to New York City and worked for Lehman Brothers as middle office trade support in their equity division. After three years, she resigned and took a job with Citigroup in their event planning department, her dream job, also in NYC. She worked there for four and a half years, then retired from working to be a stay-at-home mom. She lived in New York City from graduation in 1997 to 2010, when her family moved to Wyckoff, New Jersey for two short years. After missing the city and her husband getting a global job that took him all over the world, they decided to move back to New York City in 2012 and have been there ever since. They actually moved back to the same street! Amy has been very active in her children’s schools, volunteering wherever necessary. She ran the school store for PS41, photo day for over five years, and was a class parent every year for at least one child throughout their elementary school career, amongst other volunteering. The kids attended PS41 in Greenwich Village, then on to IS289, The Hudson River School, in Battery Park City for middle school. She currently has two girls at Notre Dame: Paige (17), who is a senior; and Logan (15), who is a sophomore. She is on the Core Committee at Notre Dame and volunteers for the annual auction as well as anywhere else she can! When she is not running her kids around to their activities, she enjoys playing tennis, skiing, organizing and decorating, and mostly being with friends and family, entertaining on weekends at their home on the Jersey shore. She resides in Battery Park City (after many years living in the West Village) with her husband of twenty years, Bill, their three children, and dog, Harper. She is honored to be the recipient of the 2022 Parent Award. Being a part of the Notre Dame Community the last four years has given her family tremendous joy to watch her girls grow into ladies. Being able to give back to Notre Dame is what is most important, as the school helped shape her girls. She cannot thank Notre Dame enough. 15

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to Eileen Griffin O’Brien P’22 & P’24

16

Chez Nous Parent Award

Eileen (Griffin) O’Brien grew up in a large, extended, Irish family in Brooklyn, NY and is the eldest of five children. Eileen attended Our Lady Help of Christians elementary school, the same school her father and uncle attended. She attended Massapequa High School and continued her education at St. John’s University. After college, Eileen worked for various financial institutions and then settled at Marsh and McLennan Companies in NYC. Eileen and family reside in Hoboken, NJ, and this is where she met Douglas O’Brien. Eileen and Doug have three children: Natalie, a senior at Notre Dame; Aimee, a sophomore at Notre Dame; and Colin, a sophomore at St. Peter’s Preparatory School. Eileen and Doug appreciate the sense of community provided by each school. Eileen began volunteering when her children started elementary school. She began with the Parent Teacher Association and then joined the school fundraising team. Eileen continued her volunteer efforts at each of the children’s high schools. Eileen joined the Chez Nous Benefit Core Committee during Natalie’s freshman year and enjoyed being a part of the team. Eileen is looking forward to another successful Chez Nous Benefit!

17

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to Louise O’Connor P’19 & P’22

18

Chez Nous Parent Award

Louise was born and raised in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, Ireland and is the youngest of six children born to Mary Hannah and the late Jack O’Connor. Interestingly enough, her grandparents emigrated to Brooklyn, NYC in the early 1900s, where her father, Jack, was born. Jack returned to Ireland to finish elementary school. Later he studied pharmacy at Trinity College, Dublin and founded two very successful businesses, with the help of Mary Hannah, in their local town. Louise attended St. Joseph’s Primary School & Ballyhaunis Community School. Jack passed away after a long illness just after she finished high school, at which point she went to Dublin to attend a bi-lingual business school. After earning her degree, Louise spent some time working at Guillers & Brest, France. She then spent a few years working in the shipping industry in Dublin until emigrating to the USA in 1993. She had a long-distance relationship with George Delaney, also from Ballyhaunis, who was back and forth to the US, so Louise decided to take a chance and was very lucky to find employment (and a work visa!) with the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, where she worked in human resources management. After 20 very successful years, Louise unfortunately had to leave her position at the UN due to a work-related spine injury. George and Louise were married in Ireland in 1995 and have two daughters, Sarah and Hannah, who attended grammar school at All Saints Catholic Academy, in Bayonne, NJ, where both parents were actively involved in fundraising. Having grown up in parochial schools, it was the natural progression to select a Catholic school for their daughters. The decision to choose Notre Dame, a college prep school, with its reputation for high academic standards, small classes, and a nurturing and caring environment was an easy one. Like other parents, Louise began her time volunteering in Sarah’s freshman year stuffing envelopes and then joined the Core Committee of the Chez Nous Benefit. It was a great opportunity to meet and spend time with other parents while helping the school at the same time. George and Louise are very grateful to the faculty and staff of Notre Dame for the guidance and support given to both Sarah and Hannah in the classroom and, of course, as part of the many extracurricular activities, such as soccer, track, glee club, theater, and music club. The opportunities afforded to both girls have been tremendous. Both girls are members of the National Honor Society, and both served as President of the Student Council. Sarah graduated in 2019 and is studying computer science and math at Northeastern in Boston. Hannah will graduate from Notre Dame this year and hopes to pursue a degree in engineering. She will be making her college decision very soon. All this success and these opportunities can be traced back to the abundance of support and love here at Chez Nous.
