WASHINGTON – It was a moment of tragedy that changed freshmen nursing student Sierra Hadley and ultimately led to her title as Miss District of Columbia Teen U.S.A. Now she is preparing to compete in July for the national title. After Howard University music student Alonzo Guyton was shot and killed in October in an apparent robbery in Prince George’s County, Hadley said she realized life is short and precious. So, she said, she made a bucket list of all the things she wanted to do, and participating in the Miss District of Columbia Teen U.S.A pageant was on the list. “He had done a lot with his life, and I wanted to do a lot with mine too,” Hadley said. The pageant was Hadley’s first. She said she did not expect to walk out with the title. “I was just doing it for fun,” she said. “I really didn’t think I was going to win. I didn’t have a lot of preparation. I just came as myself.” Herself was apparently more than enough. For the national competition in July, Hadley says she wants to keep that foundation and prepare more. She plans to eat a healthy diet, exercise and practice her verbal presentation in preparation for the title. In the meantime, she is promoting confidence in youth through fitness as she fulfills her duties as Miss District of Columbia Teen U.S.A. “I’m just trying to hook up with various organizations like the Boys and Girls Club,” Hadley said. “I’m currently in the process of organizing my own fitness expos.” Hadley’s outlook on pageants and their meaning has changed completely. “Before competing for my current title, I thought pageants were just people showing off how beautiful they are,” Hadley said. “But I think it’s phenomenal when people come together to show what a state has to offer.”
