NEW STARTERS We are delighted to welcome the following new starters to the company:

I would like to start by paying tribute to one of our friends and colleagues Jamie Phillip, who died suddenly in January at the age of 27. A keen football fan, Jamie was known for his love of Stockport County and was a very popular member of the team. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Jamie will be greatly missed by everyone at Chevron, especially by his friends at our Thatcham depot.

Safety standards At the time of writing, Chevron has passed a new safety milestone, having achieved a zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) with more than 3m hours worked. I would like to thank everyone for their continued hard work and commitment to our ‘In safe hands’ approach to help ensure that everyone gets home safely to their loved ones.

HRS Lastly, I’m pleased to welcome our first UK sister company, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), to the Triton Group. We’ve been working with HRS, a leader in work zone safety solutions for several years and it’s a great opportunity for us to collaborate further and develop even more innovative technology for our customers (see page 5 for details).

Luke on The Voice UK Commercial Controller, Luke Swatman, stunned the audience and coaches with his moving performance of Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Il Mare Calmo Della Sera’ at the show’s auditions.

Before going on stage, Luke said he had “something different to offer to the coaches” and he didn’t disappoint, as the whole audience urged the judges to hit their buttons. Olly Murs and Jennifer Hudson both turned their chairs, so Luke had a tough

choice, but he decided to go with Jen in the end.

Luke then went on to do ‘battle’ with fellow contestant Nicole Dennis. Their rendition of Elton John’s ‘Your song’ proved the best performance of the night, but unfortunately he didn’t make it through to the next round. Well done Luke, you are amazing and were all very proud of you!

Stuart on tour

Stuart completes Costa Rican tour Chevron Estimating Director and cycling adventurer, Stuart Abram, has completed a gruelling 10-day long tour of Costa Rica. The 295-mile-long trip saw Stuart cycle in temperatures up to 45 degrees, during which he climbed the equivalent of one ascent of Mount Blanc, reaching 3000ft above sea level at the highest point.

Some of the highlights of his trip were seeing an active volcano vent and getting up close to the local wildlife, which included sloths, snakes, lizards, toucans, white face monkeys and poisonous toads!

Championing our Customers

By Nick Denning, Business Development Director Customer satisfaction is now one of the top three priorities of Highways England, alongside safety and operational delivery. We need to reinforce that we share these priorities.

Our traffic management should be viewed as the ‘shop window’ of any project, with our layouts always leaving a positive impression amongst the travelling public. We directly influence how the site looks, how easy it is to navigate safely and how productive the main contractor can be. Crucially, we also tend to be the only members of the site team to have direct contact with the public through our role as Gateman and when we attend breakdowns, or taper strikes.

This year we are continuing to highlight the importance of traffic management to our clients and the direct impact our teams have on delivering overall satisfaction to the ultimate customers, the public. This includes educating them on the impact of bad traffic management, and in doing so, making them aware of how great our team is at getting these things right.

If we are highlighting bad practice, we all need to be at the top of our game in everything we do. Apart from the obvious need to be polite and calm when dealing directly with the public, we need to ensure we are continually thinking about how our actions will impact on the public.

Forgetting to drop a diversion, or a road closed sign after a shift, can lead to major confusion to drivers. Not bringing in all the frames and sandbags after we have finished is unsafe and can lead to complaints from the public.

At Chevron, we know that we have the best workforce who are committed to delivering the highest levels of customer service. Let’s all continue to keep the public at the forefront of our minds in everything we do, and actively help demonstrate how traffic management is the key to the success of every project.

A car full of supplies was donated, which no doubt helped to make Christmas a lot easier for local families. Following the success of the initiative, the depot team are planning to make foodbank donations throughout the year.

Highway Resource Solutions (HRS) join Triton Group Leading work zone safety solutions provider, Highway Resource Solutions Ltd (HRS), has become a sister company to Chevron after joining the Triton Group of companies.

HRS was established in 2011 to develop smart and easy-to-use technologies to safeguard road workers and the travelling public, whilst increasing the operational efficiency of traffic management systems.

A lifesaving business In 2011 a road worker in Lincolnshire was killed by an errant vehicle entering the works.

This tragic incident was the catalyst for Roger and the team to develop HRS’s Incursion Warning System for road works, which is now recognised as best practice by industry and Highways England.

Another year, another fresh start!

By Head of Health & Safety, Marie King-Smith This year we continue with a focus on mental health, working alongside other TM companies in promoting our popular TalkMore campaign.

Mental health will now be included in the monthly depot meeting agenda to encourage staff to talk openly about mental health, as well as improving awareness.

We now have trained 25 mental health first aiders and three mental health champions. All depots have been sent a physical first aider and mental health first aider poster with all their contact details, and our Employee Assistance Programme number (0800 389 0285) is publicised on stickers in all the vans.

In addition to this, we’re launching a #LETSTALKB*LL*CKS campaign to help staff put their embarrassment aside about men’s health issues and learn about the symptoms associated with different illnesses. The idea is to give people the confidence to raise any health

John’s story About 12 years ago I’d not long started with Chevron, bought a house and had my first child, William on the way. All the things you do when growing up at the ripe old age of 23! Not long after, I noticed a lump which I was quite concerned about, but being a typical bloke I ignored it. I thought the worst, but didn’t want to concern family members. Some of the lads on site knew, and to be honest, we used to have a laugh and a joke about it, and even had a nickname which I won’t go into!

The reason I didn’t opt to go to the doctors was that I was worried about the ‘what ifs’. What if I needed time off and how would I provide for my family? This went on for over two years. I ignored it, as in my mind I wanted to earn and save as much money as possible while I still could.

While putting on a smile and laughing about it with friends at work, my mind wasn’t in a good place. Eventually, I decided to go to the doctors as I was in quite a lot of pain. The doctor got straight on the phone to the hospital and they carried out a biopsy the same day. After this I had to wait about two weeks for the result and it was all clear!

It felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I was booked in at the hospital and had to undergo minor surgery and was out the same day. The amount of stress, pressure, worry and pain I had caused myself over the previous two-years by not going to the doctors was pointless in hindsight and could have been avoided.

What I’m trying to say with this message is, if you do have any issues, it’s better to talk to the right people. You might spend a lot of the time worrying for nothing, and if it isn’t nothing, there’s always someone there to help.

Awards hat-trick for Area 3 team Chevron joined the Area 3 TM team to celebrate a triple success at the recent Kier Supply Chain Community Awards 2018. The event saw the team win the coveted Guy Berresford Special Recognition Award for outstanding contribution ‘A Decade of Delivery.’

Contract updates We’ve recently won the TM contract for Area 12 for 2019/20; We have also secured a place on the Area 10 CWF, which is due to start in April 2019 and will be ongoing for the next four years; rom March, we will start work on the A13 for Kier F Construction. This award follows 18 months of advance works. The scheme is linked to national infrastructure (DP World Port) and is a major project for the client, Thurrock local authority; e are also currently bidding for the TM contracts W in Areas 6 & 8, which are due to run from October 2019 for four years.

Monthly Safety & Innovation Awards The winners of the H&S Award since our last issue are:

August – Carlton Hillberg, Operative (Newport), who has become the ‘go to’ person on the A46 and A49 schemes since passing his M6 ticket in 2018.

His ongoing professionalism and commitment to safety embody the Chevron Way. Carlton is looking forward to completing his Foreman’s course later this year.

September – Harry Exall, Foreman (Stafford), for always leading by example and the high level of professionalism he has shown on the Kier A9 scheme. His ongoing dedication and proactive approach has earned him a nomination for the monthly observation award

They ensured the car was towed away from the carriageway and that the family had a warm, secure place to wait and could get home safely.

December – Adrain Howlett, Supervisor, Safety Representative and Mental Health First Aider (Tring), for his ‘can do’ attitude and championing the Chevron Way; whether it’s taking the time to speak to depot staff and helping to solve their problems, to dealing with other day-today challenges and always maintaining the highest safety standards.

November – Chris Taylor, Foreman and Mark Jones, Foreman (Newport) for continually upholding Chevron’s values of safety and excellent customer service whilst providing maintenance cover on the M50 static scheme.

Both Mark and Chris have ensured that the site is spotless and have reported all taper and equipment strikes and observations, with over 30 logged in November alone.

January – Gavin Dymond, TSCO (Newport), who showed great compassion and professionalism when he found a lone motorist slumped at the wheel and complaining of chest pains on the M50. Gavin arranged for an ambulance and stayed with the driver until they had received medical treatment and their family had arrived to ensure they got home safely.

Safety is our business and these are great examples to illustrate the Chevron Way at work and that everyone has a duty to ensure that they and their colleagues get home safely to their families and loved ones.

By Maria King-Smith, Head of Health and Safety Last year we achieved a zero AFR, with more than three million man hours without a Riddor. This is a fantastic achievement, and this year we aim to continue this by working actively with our depot teams through our Senior Leadership Team – as Depot Champions, continuing our Health & Safety roadshows, promoting our campaigns and providing safety updates. The champions enable us to keep lines of communication open, via Q&A sessions, toolbox talks and our online training platform, alongside external courses.

Alongside our mental health campaign TalkMore, we are launching our men’s health campaign #LETSTALKB*LL*CKS – the aim is to reduce the stigma of talking about health issues and raise awareness of different conditions and symptoms to give staff the confidence to see their doctor about any concerns they may have.

In addition, our safety reps have been working extremely hard with the depots to promote our H&S campaigns via the ‘you said, we did boards’, face to face conversations and liaising between depot management and the operatives. As well as undertaking the mental health first aid training and promoting our TalkMore campaign, all our safety reps will be attending Chevron’s Safety Convention in Stafford in May. Lastly, our online eLearning platform continues to play a great part in providing courses for all our staff. Last year we rolled out 11 courses and there are plenty more this year. If you have not completed the course assigned to you, please do so as soon as possible. There is something new for us all to learn and the exam at the end isn’t too hard if you pay attention!

Chevron achieves Gold standard Chevron’s Stuart Abram with Highways England representatives and fellow members of the EMAD 44001 working group.

Area 7 team shares ICW award We’re proud to be recognised, alongside fellow East Midlands Asset Delivery Community members, at the recent Institute for Collaborative Working (ICW) Awards 2018, which was held at the House of Lords.

The team won the Industry to Industry Collaboration Award in recognition of its work to bring together all contractors working within the Highways England Area 7 community, under the ISO44001 Alliance Model.

We’re delighted to announce that Chevron has attained Constructionline (Level 3) Gold membership, giving customers enhanced assurance on safety, quality, and environmental management standards.

To achieve Gold Membership, applicants must complete an extended prequalification questionnaire and its health and safety standards must meet the criteria of Constructionline’s Safety Systems in Procurement (SSIP) scheme.

Chevron is also accredited under Achilles Building Confidence, Achilles UVDB, Builders Profile and Avetta among others. Chevron also holds the RoSPA Gold Medal, having achieved a RoSPA Gold Award for occupational health and safety for six consecutive years.

Chevron’s Estimating Director, Stuart Abram, said: “It is testament to the collaborative work of all the organisations involved that we can work together to develop a single system that everyone can sign up to – what a fantastic achievement for all involved.”

Chevron debut at Highways UK The Business Development and Marketing Team were busy showcasing Chevron’s innovative ERP system at Highways UK 2018 recently.

It’s the first time that Chevron has exhibited at the prestigious event, which captures and shares thought leadership on infrastructure development, with a focus on intelligent infrastructure.

Chevron expands StreetWorks Division This year we’ve launched with a national push to grow our StreetWorks division. As the UK’s leading provider of traffic management on the high speed strategic road network, we’re focusing on significantly increasing our capability across the Local Authority road network, providing temporary traffic lights, lane closures and stop & go services nationally across England and Wales.

To boost growth in this

sector, we’ve appointed three new dedicated StreetWorks Development Managers. Eddie McFarland will focus on working with customers across the north of England, whilst Chris Davis and Matt Hunt will operate across the south.

Operations will be delivered from our existing network of depots across the country, with plans for three further depots to open within the next 12 months.

“This is an important part of our ongoing company strategy to create better work zone safety”, explains Business Development Director, Nick Denning.
