A great team

There’s a well-known saying that the difference between success and failure is a great team At Chevron, I’m proud of the great team we have and with new companies joining us, this team is now expanding and taking us into new markets and opportunities.

In this issue, I’m delighted to welcome everyone at Traffic Management Services Ltd (TMS) to the Chevron group of companies. The firm, which employs more than 100 staff, is led by Lauren Barlow, Luke Hewgill, David Abbott and Michael Barlow, and specialises in the low-speed and events sectors (see profile on page 7).

In other group news, technology developed by our sister company HRS is really taking off, with successful Smart Motorways variable 50-60mph speed limit trials, and other products being trialled by Network Rail at level crossings.

Digital is now a core part of our strategy and this is helping us win work and achieve some impressive results for our clients, such as SES Water, who’ve realised a 30% cost saving through our technology. To find out more, please see our lead article on page 4.

As always, if you have any comments, or items you would like to see included in the newsletter, please get in touch.

Blister Sisters

Well done to Jennie Nichols, National Commercial Manager, and her sister Helen, who completed a 26-mile Mighty Hike to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Charity recently. The pair took part in the charity challenge in memory of Jennie’s Mother-in-law, who died from a brain tumour earlier this year and was supported through her treatment and end of life care by the charity.

STAFF FOCUS

Lee wins fight for life

The trek around the Ullswater Way in the Lake District took around 9 hours to complete, with a total climb of around 2,400ft.

So far, the pair have raised more than £500. If you’d like to show your support for this amazing charity.

Congratulations ladies. No doubt, you smashed it!

We always love a feel-good news story and this is definitely one of them!

Back in September last year, Lee Evans, Foreman and IPV driver, was feeling ill and shaking it off as a common cold. Sadly, this wasn’t the case and that night Lee suffered a major stroke. He was in Trafford Hospital’s stroke unit for the next four weeks. He had lost the use of his mobility and speech and the doctors said that realistically, he should have died.

Lee eventually returned home and had to start learning to walk and talk again. With the support of his family and friends, Lee improved gradually every day. His partner, Nikki, was an absolute rock attending every appointment and caring for

Lee through his recovery, as well as working extra hours to support the family.

And what an amazing recovery Lee has made! Not only did he overcome a stroke that should have killed him, but he’s lost three stone in weight and been able to lower his diabetes medication. Lee has gone from strength to strength with his mobility and speech to the point that he has been able to return to Manchester depot working in the yard and, who knows one day, he may even get back his original job as Foreman and IPV driver.

INNOVATION

Our Digital Future

The use of digital services have become part of our everyday lives; from browsing the internet and booking train tickets to navigating using google maps.

Acquisition of HRS

In 2017, Chevron realised that we’d need to take digital services seriously in order to transform the way we work. This is why we invested in digital services such as our ERP system (Midvale) and why we bought HRS, whose Intellicone safety systems many of you use every day.

HRS were already well-known in the market, but what really made them a good fit was the solid technology they based their products on and the simple, easyto-use system and software they’d developed. We could also see an opportunity to develop other products using their platform which would improve many aspects of TM operations.

As a result of our partnership, we now have:

The Smart Closure systems and QR boards, which are deployed at closure points to prevent incursions into closed areas and manage the public better;

Smart Intercoms that allow the public to communicate with the teams on site if they need access or information;

Variable speed signs which give us the flexibility to operate a safe speed when our staff are working on site, but switch to a higher speed when they’re not, for better journey times.

By integrating HRS’s digital services into our work, we have improved safety in our work zones, increased the efficiency of our operations, and improved customer service for road users.

Smart Closure and Smart Intercom Signs

Smart projects

We’re now at the forefront of driving Traffic Management into the 21st century and, to illustrate this, here are some examples of where these new services are making a big difference

1. Smart Closure and Smart Intercom Signs

When a burst water main on the A217 in the busy town of Banstead, Surrey required a carriageway closure, Sutton and East Surrey Water (SES Water) chose our Intellicone Smart Closure system and Smart Intercom signs to help them manage the works.

The road had several side roads to close and maintain, which would have been difficult for a typical TM crew. With the urban location and high traffic volumes, there was a higher risk of local traffic looking for shortcuts through the site and breaching the TM. Negative customer feedback was another concern.

By using the Smart Closure system, the site was mapped and digitally monitored by our TM crew. This allowed us to manage the entire site and respond to the exact location of any incidents quickly, as well as improving the overall safety of site staff.

The Smart Intercom signs were placed at the closure points with diversion route information using a QR code to give a Google Maps route when scanned. The signs also had an intercom allowing customers to speak directly to the TM crew for assistance, whilst reducing the risk of face to face confrontations.

The benefits

During construction, 69 potential incursions were prevented by our TM crew. Chevron saved SES Water 30% on overall TM costs and the works were completed ahead of schedule, with almost no complaints. Taking a complex site like this and making it safe and easy for our staff to manage shows how digital services are helping change the way we work for the better.

2. Variable Speed Signs

Smart signs are one of the latest additions to our services. It uses the same mobile and cloud technology that the Smart Closure system does, allowing the signs to be controlled remotely once set up. They look like normal temporary traffic signs, but use rotating prisms (think Toblerone bars) to change the sign face, in this case to vary speed limits on a Smart Motorway scheme. A solar panel on the back of the sign powers them so there’s no need for an additional power source on site.

These signs offer several advantages. Once they’re placed on site, they can be changed without any carriageway crossings or physical intervention. They also allow us to change to speed limit across the entire working area, or parts of it, so we can use a lower speed limit when the workforce is on site for improved safety. When works aren’t taking place, the speed limit can be raisedso that road users can get on with their journeys. Essentially, it’s like operating a smart motorway concept within a site area, but without the risk of constantly changing the signs manually.

Our variable speed signs are currently deployed on the M6 southbound and on the M4 and the feedback from clients has been exceptionally positive. In December, they’ll also be deployed on the M62.

Using the same dashboard we use for the Smart Closure system, we can monitor the status of every sign at any time and from any device, without the need to physically inspect each sign. In this way, we’re enhancing TM operations to make sites safer and more efficient, whilst keeping our customers satisfied. To our knowledge this is a world first in TM.

Variable Speed Signs

Our Digital Future

3. Improving Rail Safety

Using the same Smart Closure systems, we’re currently working with Network Rail to make level crossings safer for the workforce and the public.

Imagine that you’re at a closed level crossing on a dark, rainy night and don’t know where to go. Instead of moving the TM and chancing your life on a train not coming (something many people do), you can scan the QR code on the Smart Intercom information board and get the diversion route for Google and Apple maps. If you still need help, you can use the intercom to get assistance from the site crew, whilst the workforce have the peace of mind of being protected onsite by Intellicone systems – something not previously used in rail despite numerous near misses.

Looking forward

These are just some of the ways we’re transforming operations across the road and rail network. By embracing digital services, we’re changing the face of how roads, railways, and utilities are built and how we interact with the travelling public.

Over the next 6-12 months, we’ll be rolling out a set of online resources to show what we’re doing and how you can contribute. We’re all working at one of the most exciting businesses in the industry and we want you to be part of this future.

Technology in practice

As part of the Arborfield Cross Relief Road project, utility diversions were required at Swallowfield Road to allow for the new staggered junction to be constructed. For this work to be carried out, a 300m section of Swallowfield Road needed to be fully closed from 1-23 October. This closure was occupied 24-hours a day by one of our TM crews and used an Intellicone Smart Closure System to enable the remote monitoring of closure points.

Matt Parkes, added: “This technology is providing a real safety benefit to those working on the ground. This was apparent at a recent vehicle incursion, where operatives were alerted to an errant driver entering the closure point. This allowed them to take evasive action, avoiding injury or worse.”

Award winning technology

We’re proud to be recognised for our technology and digital services after winning the Innovation & Technology category at Balfour Beatty’s Supply Chain Awards 2019.

Chevron was nominated for the prestigious award by Matt Parkes, Project Manager for Balfour Beatty, who highlighted our innovative solutions as part of the Wokingham Major Highways contract to provide safety and cost benefits.

Matt Parkes, said: “Chevron are market leading in advocating the use of technology and offering a range of digital services, whilst remaining competitive commercially.”

The solutions used include the Intellicone Smart Closure System and Smart diversion signs, which contain QR codes so members of the public can scan and download diversion routes.

The greatest gift

What if everything you enjoyed doing was taking away from you? Like cycling, running, even just playing in the back garden with your kids. That’s what happened to me in 2017 when I was diagnosed with kidney failure.

It all happened so quickly. One year I was climbing Kilimanjaro and the next, I couldn’t walk up the stairs without getting completely out of breath.

Getting treatment

When your kidneys fail there is no cure; the only options available are dialysis or a transplant. In 2018 I started dialysis treatment, a process where for three days a week two needles were put in my arm to clean my blood of toxins every three hours.

I say ‘treatment’, but basically all it does is keep you alive and it’s no life. You’re constantly tired, you must watch how much you drink because the body starts to retain water when your kidneys fail. Dialysis gets rid of this excess water and stops toxins taking over and shutting every other organ down. Without it, I would have been dead in a matter of weeks.

A great friend

Luckily, I had a great friend, Geoff, who offered to donate one of his kidneys to me. He took series of tests over six months and at the end, he was declared a good match for me. What are the chances? And yes, in case you’re wondering, it is possible to lead a healthy life with just one kidney. In fact, as I write this, my friend is currently in the Arctic Circle completing a trek which will last several weeks!

“Anyone who considers donating an organ is incredible. Geoff is a hero and I thank him every time we speak.”

Living life again

I’m now six months post-transplant. Every day is a miracle and it’s changed my perspective on life far more than I thought it would.

Anyone who considers donating an organ is incredible. Geoff is a hero and I thank him every time we speak, but these words are meaningless as I can’t express just how much it means to get my life back and to do the things I love again.

If you’ve ever thought of organ donation either as a live donor or when you die, make sure you talk with your family to make them aware of your wishes. Organ donations change people’s lives and give them hope to live again.

Raising expectations

In 2018 we achieved a zero AFR, with more than 4.5m man hours worked without a Riddor. This is a fantastic achievement and we aim to maintain this safety record by working actively with our depot teams through our SLT, Depot Champions, our Health and Safety roadshows, safety updates and keeping the lines of communication/consultation open through Q&A sessions, toolbox talks and our online training platform, as well as external courses.

As you’re all aware, our men’s health campaign has gone from strength to strength, encouraging everyone to talk about their health and how to reduce their risks as we all aren’t getting any younger! We hope you find the posters around the depots informative, as well as entertaining!

It was great to catch up with our safety reps in Stafford recently and discuss what’s going on in the depots, looking at best practice and how we can all improve as a company. More information on this will be published later in the year when we start our annual Health and Safety road show around the depots so watch out for the posters and updates!

This year we will be adding three new courses to our training programme, banksman training, manual handling training and conflict management training. These will be available face-toface or via our online training platform, Initiafy.

Electric vehicles put the test

We’re proud to have teamed up with A-one+ to introduce the first electric vehicles to the Chevron fleet. The two Nissan Acenta electric vans are currently being trialled on A-one+ projects in Area 12 projects across Yorkshire and Humber.

Dennis Gregg, Northern Operations Director, said:“The introduction of these fully electric vehicles into the fleet is the start of our journey in ensuring we achieve significant reduction in carbon footprint, whilst delivering schemes more efficiently.”

Electric vehicles offer zero carbon emissions whilst driving with no engine noise, as well as reduced running and maintenance costs, and vehicle downtime.

Chevron is monitoring the performance of the vehicles to determine how long the batteries will last under our normal working conditions, whilst measuring the benefits the vans bring to our business, A-one+ and Highways England.

Chevron helps mark Air Ambulance Anniversary

The Chevron team are proud to support the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance service as it celebrates 25 years of saving lives.

Chevron is one of the charity’s ambassadors and joined clinical crew, trustees and former patients, at a special anniversary event at the Fire and Rescue Training Ground in Waddington earlier this year.

The day began with a mock life-saving mission

and included an official unveiling of the charity’s silver anniversary Ambucopter tail. The iconic yellow design depicts 25 pairs of hands, each reflecting a former patient who’s been helped by the charity’s life-saving crew since its launch in 1994.

The charity will be running a series of anniversary fundraising events and activities. To find out how you can support the charity and get involved, visit www.ambucopter.org.uk, or call 01522 548469 or 0115 9412255.

Chevron in £15,000 charity boost

Chevron has donated £15,000 that it received in prize money to three charities after winning the Overall ESG (environment, social responsibility, governance and overall leadership) Award at Tritons annual ESG Awards.

The cash donations were made to Kidney Wales, the Paul Popham Fund and children’s charity, Sparkles, which have supported Chevron staff and their families over the years.

Jamie Bowen, National Business Process and SHEQ Manager, with representatives from Kidney Wales and the Paul Popham Fund.

Manchester goes green

At Chevron we’re always looking at ways to be more environmentally friendly. As part of achieving ISO 14001 Environmental Management, we’ve identified many areas we could improve in, including how much water we’re using as an organisation and how we could reduce this.

At the Manchester depot we’ve recently designed and installed a rainwater harvesting system so we can use rainwater to wash the vehicles. Additionally, we’ve improved our toilets by installing ballast to reduce the volume of water in the cisterns, so they now have 9L flushes rather than 13L.

By making small adjustments like this, we can make a massive difference. These improvements should achieve a £2000 saving over the next five years, but more importantly it will save over 200 tonnes of water each year.

Depots back Food Bank appeal

A big thank you to John Cairns, Contracts Supervisor and Stuart Abram, Bid Director, who organised a Food Bank delivery recently on behalf of EMAD, supported by our Leeds and Finedon depots.

We had a tremendous response to the EMAD Food Bank Appeal, with more than 1000kgs of food collected by the 23 companies in EMAD. Chevron Operatives, supply chain and staff collected and contributed around 300kgs of food - a solid contribution by any estimation!

Between 1 April’18 and 31 March’19, the Trussell Trust’s food bank network distributed 1.6m threeday emergency food supplies to people in crisis, a 19% increase on the previous year. More than half a million of these went to children. Well done to everyone involved!

Job: IPV Foreman (Findeon)

You started at Chevron as a Trainee two years ago and you’re now a qualified IPV Foreman. What do you like best about Chevron? Chevron has helped me grow and enhance all my skills. What I really love most about Chevron is being able to pass my knowledge and experience on to new starters, how every day is different, and the guys on the ground who are always there to help you along the way.

What do you do enjoy doing in your spare time? I go to the gym and I weight train, I recently entered a powerlifting competition to raise money for charity and ended up pulling 170kg deadlift. Next year I’m aiming for 200kg!

If you could go to dinner with three people dead or alive, who would they be? This is a tricky one! It would have to be world’s strongest man Eddie Hall, as he would know where all the good fast food places are! Ed Sheeran as he has a Nando’s black card and my

friend Victoria, as she really likes to eat at fancy restaurants and go out after.

Tell us some interesting facts about yourself:

I used to box as an amateur elite. I boxed at York Hall, Echo Arena in Liverpool and got to the semi-finals of the ABA elite finals.

I was in the Armed Forces for six years and I can lift a lot of weight!

My favourite food has to be a cheeky Nando’s.

My favourite film is Avengers Endgame, but I do love all the Marvel films!

I love all types of music, but I do love rap like Cardi B and Nikki Minaj!

£150 worth of shopping vouchers are up for grabs for the entry with the most creative image using our Chevron bugs. Remember, the first favourite entry wins the top prize!

New York, New York!

A big thank you to everyone who entered our photo competition. Congratulations to Sharron Pain, Training Team Leader (Thame), who won first place for her impressive sky-scraping mug shot! Sharron took this amazing picture on top of the Rockefeller Centre during a recent trip to New York with her mother, son and daughter-in-law.

I spotted a Marmite van on the motorway. It was heading yeastbound.

More expansion with three new depots

We’re delighted to announce the launch of three new Chevron depots in Exeter, Newcastle and Warrington as part of our continued growth and expansion.

Following this expansion, we now have more than 500 operatives across the UK road network, putting us at the forefront of the TM industry.

Exeter

Since opening in May this year, our Exeter depot has a strong forward order book, including the South West Framework ALD contract and the Routes to Market Regional Delivery Partnership (RDP).

Matt West, General Manager, said: “Our customer-led approach has been key in winning contracts in the South West, where our skilled supervisory team work with our clients and growing local workforce to deliver sustainable work zone safety solutions.

“I’m particularly excited about the opportunities to utilise our technology and local expertise to deliver road infrastructure improvement projects more efficiently, whilst maintaining our best in sector safety record.”

Newcastle

A big welcome to Northern Operations Director, Dennis Gregg, and Regional Manager, David Stores, who are building and managing our newly opened Newcastle depot.

With more than 30 years’ TM experience, Dennis began his career at local company RTM Group services where he gained extensive knowledge of best practice, local conditions and client requirements.

Another RTM veteran, David has worked in TM for the past 27 years’ and brings a wealth of experience working on large schemes and developing local client relationships, which will support our growing order book in the North.

Warrington

The Warrington depot has also got off to a flying start following its most recent win, the Preston Western Distributor Road, a 3.5 year scheme on the M55 and other localised roads. The team are also working on various schemes for J. Murphy & Sons Limited across the North West, as well as serving existing clients.

Warrington’s growing team of 23 operatives are making the most of the depot’s great location on the M56 & M6 interchange, with easy access to the North West network. And at just 3 years old, the depot boasts modern facilities, whilst being able to utilise Manchester’s high speed vehicles, as and when required.

Streetworks/Low-Speed team

“Just thought I would send a quick email to congratulate the guys we had today for our traffic management. They were excellent; the work went perfectly, set up was quick and on time, and work area was spot on.”

Mike Eslick, Field Manager, AC Landscapes & Treeworks UK Ltd

Just a quick note to thank you all for your support over the Bank Holiday weekend…With the temperatures being quite high, people were not staying all day and the car park turned over well. The Ranger team, who car parked all weekend to maximise the space we have available, are very appreciative of the support from both Highways England and Chevron. Please pass on our thanks to your team.”
