Welcome to our 20th anniversary edition.
We’ve come a long way since the £15 tin shed in Watford that was our first depot! And the business we are today wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the original Chevron team led by Kim Yates.
For those of you who weren’t around in 1997, there are plenty of archive photos and anecdotes of how it all started in our anniversary special on page four.
Since our last issue, I’m pleased to say that we have achieved an accident frequency rate of 0.0, with over two million man hours worked. I’d like to thank everyone for playing their part in achieving this fantastic milestone. Keep up the great work and let’s continue to ensure that everyone returns home safely to their family and friends at the end of each shift.

Triple success at supply chain awards
The Chevron Area 3 TM team celebrated a sweep of awards at the recent Kier Supply Chain Community Awards.
The three awards recognised Chevron’s contribution to the supply chain in the following categories:
Health & Safety - Winners (Kier Highways & Chevron)
Process - Highly Commended (Chevron Area 3 TM Team)
Highways England Recognition Award (Kier Highways, R&W, Chevron, Hanson & WJ Lining)
Mike Fenner, Luke Swatman, Ross O’Hanlon and Matt Morphet were on hand to accept the awards on the night. Congratulations to everyone involved and, in particular, Chris Davis and Jamie Reid, who were unable to attend the event.
Chevron was also highly commended at the Highways England Supplier Recognition awards for Supply Chain Management. This was based on our fully integrated ‘one team’ approach to providing Traffic Management for the Area 9 Asset Support Contract (ASC).
AWARD
Newport named Depot of the Year 2016
Our Newport team has been celebrating after winning Chevron’s Depot of the Year 2016 award.
The Depot of the Year Award is presented annually to the highest performing Chevron depot, according to safety statistics, observation reporting, financial performance, labour utilisation, and IMS audit performance.
Gavin Dymond, Operations Supervisor, received the award on behalf of the Newport depot at the recent Chevron Annual Conference.
He said: “I am very proud of the depot and extremely grateful to all of the team for their hard work, which has led to them getting the recognition they deserve.”
Tim Cockayne, Managing Director, commented, “Over the past year, the team at Newport has taken massive steps forward and have been at the forefront of Championing The Chevron Way. They have raised the bar in terms of safety performance through their participation in the depot safety video programme and their commitment to observation reporting.”

Callum completes Fiji tour
TM Operative (Manchester) Callum Marriot travelled to Fiji to take part in the BARLA Great Britain Lions (open age) Rugby League Tour 2016.
The two-week tour saw the Lions play three matches, with Callum being named Man of the Match in a thrilling encounter with the Fiji Residents on 15th November.
Chevron host first Supplier Day
Our first national Supplier Day, which took place in January, was a great success with more than 50 people in attendance. Representatives from all of Chevron’s suppliers joined our Senior Management Team and Operations Managers at the event. The packed agenda included sessions on Drug and Alcohol testing, PPE requirements, training and the induction process, audit feedback as well as a demonstration of our new tablet system.

Christmas magic
Foster carers Gary Billis (Superviser, Leeds) and his wife Rebecca organised a surprise Christmas treat for children in care (looked after children) in December.
As part of the event, Gary and Rebecca invited 200 children from Doncaster Children’s Services Trust to Chatsworth House, where they got to meet Santa and enjoy a funpacked day out. And as well as a Christmas lunch, all of the children received gifts of books and chocolates (donated by Chevron).

Baby news
Congratulations to Csillag Mckenzie, Accounts (Head Office), and her husband Craig, who became proud parents to Noah on 21s February. There was also baby joy for Jill Cochrane, Business Systems Manager (Head Office), whose grandson Edward Wilkinson was born on 19 December.

Mick in charity boxing bout
“Being parted from family at this time of year is a heart wrenching time,” said Rebecca. “The look on the children’s faces when they saw Santa was out of this world. Sharing their biggest wish for Christmas was truly magical and for these children a memory of Christmas that will last for a lifetime.”
PEOPLE
Chris publishes first book
Congratulations to Chris Winship, TM Foreman (Tring), who has recently published his first book.
The story, called Unbalanced, took more than two years to write and was inspired by Chris’ love of science fiction. Chris is currently working on two more books, which he expects to be published by the end of 2017.

Mick Carr, Supervisor (Manchester), has helped to fund a life changing operation for a girl with cerebral palsy by taking part in a charity boxing bout. The match between Mick and his opponent Ben Grimes raised a total of £1,305 and was part of a series of charity events to fund a £21,000 operation for six-year-old India Gunning. If successful, the operation will enable India to walk.
Mick said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to everybody within Chevron who supported me with sponsorship and messages of support. I would also like to thank Morgan Thompson for helping me with my training.”

Monthly Safety & Innovation Awards
The winners of the H&S Award since our last issue are:
October – Terry Green, whose actions helped prevent a potentially serious incident when a member of the public drove the wrong way up a carriageway inside a total closure on the M5 Smart Motorways Scheme.
Anthony Cook, who continually leads by example and has gone above and beyond on numerous occasions. His efforts have helped us win the Balfour Beatty JV H&S Award seven times.
November – John Sanderson, who ensured the safety of the travelling public and contractors after a set of tower lights had flipped on the A14 near Cambridge.
December – Terry Green and Kelvyn Llewellyn, whose quick thinking helped to avert a potential incident, when they noticed a member of the public walking the wrong way up the main carriageway on the M5 Smart Motorways scheme.
January – Ian Boyd, whose instinctive reaction averted tragedy, after spotting a third party vehicle travelling at high speed towards himself and fellow operative, Alan Rilings on the M1. The incident happened so quickly, that there was just enough time for Ian to grab Alan and throw both of them over the centre barrier – an act that undoubtedly saved both their lives.
Safety is our business and these are great examples to illustrate this and remind us that everyone has a duty to ensure that they and their colleagues get home safely to their families and loved ones. Well done all!
Remember the monthly prize is £100 and the annual prize is £1000.
Monthly award process
The Monthly H&S Award is changing! Nominations can now come through one of three routes:
1. Observation Reporting – as per the current monthly award, a good observation report highlighting areas of concern or an outstanding approach to health & safety will be considered.
2. Nomination – this can be from anyone within the business or a customer, but they
have to demonstrate outcomes against one of the Chevron Way Values. SF89 standard form must be completed and submitted to Christopher Rowley, National Health & Safety Manager (christopher@chevrontm.com).
3. Depot Proud Audit – good ideas that have led to demonstrable outcomes following Depot Proud audits will also be considered. The Depot Proud audit will be introduced over the coming months.
Anthony Cook wins Annual H&S Award
Congratulations to Anthony Cook, TM Foreman (M5 Smart Motorway scheme), who has been awarded Chevron’s Annual Employee Health and Safety Award 2016.
This award is in recognition for the continual high standards of safety that Anthony has demonstrated throughout the year. As day-shift Lead Foreman on the M5 Smart Motorway scheme he has gone above and beyond what is expected of a team leader on numerous occasions with his efforts in and out of work hours.
Anthony leads by example and his quick thinking has identified both areas of concern or potentially serious hazards at work. He has then always offered sensible solutions to a problem or acted accordingly to mitigate the risk.
Demonstrating the Chevron ‘In Safe Hands’ approach to workplace health and safety to his colleagues and the customer, Anthony has continually pushed the M5 team in the right direction. As a result of this, Chevron won the Balfour Beatty Vinci JV Health and Safety Award nine times in 2016 and Anthony’s efforts were a significant contribution in this achievement.
Thank you for all your contributions to Chevron’s safety record in 2016.

Improving H&S record
Our H&S Performance saw a significant improvement in 2016, with key industry indicators such as Accident Incident Rate and Frequency Rates being the lowest since 2012, and also below the Industry average.
Our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate was also the lowest it has been since records began in 2014.

These indicators are critical to us winning work, but also maintaining our position on existing contracts such as Area 10, 9, 7 and 3. Our improved performance is a reflection of the hard work that you put in on a daily/nightly basis to ensure that when working with Chevron you truly are In Safe Hands.
Our improvement in 2016 was great, however, 50% of our accidents were Slips, Trips and Falls incidents; many of which could have been prevented; for example, jumping out of or off vehicles, not using head torches, or climbing onto barriers.
We always aim for a zero accident rate and will be looking at ways we can improve our H&S performance further in 2017.
Everyone can play their part by being vigilant, thinking before acting, completing observation reports where slips, trips and falls hazards exist, or by simply coming forward with an idea to make the workplace a safer place for you and your colleagues.

DEPOT FOCUS: STAFFORD
Peak performance
Chevron Stafford has achieved an incredible amount in its first three years, as Operations Manager, Karl Exall, explains.
There’s never a dull moment here. Since opening in July 2014, the depot’s provided all the TM for Kier Highway Services (KHS) in Area 9 and work has been pretty much non-stop. Even from day one of the contract, we were implementing two significant schemes, which had never been done before!
Over the years, we’ve appointed various Supply Chain Partners to assist in delivery of the contract and integrated key members of staff into Kier to assist with programming, design and ECI.
At first we were based at Kier’s Hilton Park depot; however, it soon became obvious that we would quickly outgrow it. So, in 2015 we moved to a small, derelict ex-Highways England compound at Doxey in Staffordshire. This was to be our home for the next year.
We installed temporary offices and
welfare within the depot and in a matter of months, had grown from providing 30 men per day to more than 100. This continued success resulted in Stafford being awarded Chevron Depot of the Year 2015.
Following this, we invested in expanding the depot facilities, installing new boundary fencing, lighting, new offices, as well as a sign manufacture workshop and quality welfare facilities for the staff. Chevron Stafford, as it is now known, was well and truly up and running!
Since then we have continued to develop and overcome many

challenges and are currently providing more than 200 men per day to service the Area 9 contract; this includes 28 x IPV’s and 35 x 3.5t TM Vehicles.
We currently have a turnover of around £15m and counting. This is an outstanding achievement, considering we started off with nothing three years ago.
This success would not be possible without the efforts of the whole team of office staff, supervisors and crews, who continue to provide TM resources 24-7, 365 days a year.
Location: The Depot is in Doxey, Staffordshire. An ideal location to service the whole of the Midlands.
Team: 40 permanent staff, plus approx. 30 agency staff used on a regular basis
Equipment: 15x IPV’s and 18 x 3.5 tonne pick- ups
