WELCOME

Setting the standard

At Chevron ‘safety is our business’. Having a zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) is something we always aim for, so I’m delighted to report that we have achieved this with more than 2.2m hours worked.

I would like to thank everyone for their contribution in maintaining our safety record in 2018. Your continued hard work and dedication, both on and off-site, is delivering real results, as well as helping to raise safety standards across the industry (see page 8).

Since the last newsletter there have been some exciting developments for Chevron as a company. In April, Chevron was bought by Triton – a Swedish investment company – and became part of a European group of leading work zone safety service providers. This deal will help us to grow and secure our long-term future, as well as opening up new career opportunities across the company (see page 6).

Lastly, I’m delighted to announce that Chevron now has 20 trained Mental Health First Aiders as part of our new initiative, Mates in Mind; a peer support system designed to help people who have experienced a traumatic event, or are suffering from mental health issues. For more details, please see page 4.

As always, if you have any comments, or items you would like to see included in the newsletter, please get in touch.

Paul and Harry prove a TV hit

Fans of the hit ITV drama Unforgotten might have recognised some familiar faces when tuning into Season 3 this summer. The murder mystery series, which aired in July, included motorway maintenance site scenes that were filmed with the help of our Thatcham depot.

The Mainstreet Pictures crew initially enquired about TM and vehicle hire, but were so impressed after meeting Matt West and the team and touring the depot, that they asked them to provide consultancy services, assistance with site-set up and dressing, as well as the services of TM Foremen Paul Beckley and Welfare Driver Harry Moss as extras!

PEOPLE

Luke goes viral!

Talented Commercial Controller, Luke Swatman, left regulars at a Worcester pub speechless after his impressive rendition of Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma on the eve of the football World Cup.

Luke sang the World Cup anthem after putting his name down for a karaoke night and has been amazed by the response to the video of his performance on Facebook. Since it went viral, he has taken part in press and radio interviews, as well as appearing on ITV’s Good morning Britain and performing at several summer festivals, so watch this space!

Send us a Selfie!

£150 worth of shopping vouchers are up for grabs for the most original Chevron selfie. Selfies must be recent and be suitable for publication - see the front cover image for a great example! Please send your entries to lisa@chevrontm.com

Congratulations to the competition winners from our last issue, Jill Cochrane (Head Office), Michael Dyson (Manchester) and Chance Dickens (Finedon), who all correctly guessed the answer to the brain teaser was ‘bag’, because all the words can be preceeded by the word ‘sand’. You’ll all receive £50 each worth of shopping vouchers!

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING

Mates in Mind

Our new Head of Health & Safety, Maria King-Smith, talks about Chevon’s new mental health initiative and how we can all address the stigma of mental health.

At Chevron we’re passionate about keeping our workforce safe, but also healthy. This includes eating healthily, getting adequate rest and sleep, mental health and generally staying fit and happy.

Earlier this year we launched Mates in Mind as part of a construction industry scheme to raise awareness of mental health issues and improve positive mental wellbeing.

This initiative has now been rolled out to the depots and includes posters and leaflets, promoting feedback through our ‘you said, we did’ boards, and encouraging everyone to talk more about mental health issues through our Mental Health First Aiders.

It’s good to talk

After splitting up with his partner and losing contact with his young son, TM Operative, Jack Turner, found himself homeless without anyone to turn to. Here, he explains how talking to others has literally been a lifeline

“Things didn’t look good until a friend of mine informed me that he was an IPV Foreman for Chevron, so with his help, I managed to secure an interview and started work. Soon after, I managed to get my own place, which enabled me to rebuild my relationship with my son.

“However, after 18 months, on top of everything that I had been through, I couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t put on a happy face and pretend that everything was good. With no one to help or anyone to turn to, I couldn’t see any other way out of that situation other than take my own life. So, one evening after my son had been collected and I was alone, I felt like I had a headache so I took paracetamol… that is the last thing I remember.

“During my hospital stay and upon my return to work, my Depot Manager and Night-time Supervisor were in contact with me throughout, making the transition from hospital and back to work very fluid and natural. I now have a very large

support network, from mental health practitioners to Foreman at work, friends to colleagues, and I am also now engaged to the love of my life and living a very happy life.

“I can’t stress enough how important it is to talk to others. My colleagues have literally been my lifeline. I understand that it isn’t easy to talk about things, but if you ever feel like I did, I beg you, please speak about it.”

“I now have a very large support network, from mental health practitioners to Foreman at work, friends to colleagues.”

SAFETY REPS

Mental First Aiders

Over the summer, our Safety Representatives have been taking a very proactive role in the depots to promote health and wellbeing awareness. This included carrying out depot inspections, liaising with the management when issues have arisen, communicating with our workforce using the ‘you said, we did’ boards and undertaking a two-day mental health first aid training course.

Our Safety Reps for 2018 are:

Josh Fenner Thatcham

Tomasz Zurek Newport

Mazer Hussain Stafford

Richard Woolley Finedon

If you have a health or mental wellbeing issue that you would like to talk about with a member of the team, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Chevron boosted by Swedish deal

Chevron is working alongside a specialist industry investor to further its growth after it was acquired by Swedish investment company, Triton.

The deal, which was announced in April, sees Chevron become part of Triton’s portfolio of work zone safety service providers and a sister company to Ramudden, a market leader in the Nordic countries.

Tim Cockayne said: “Triton is a great strategic match for us, with a track record of ownership in the safety services sector. We have grown successfully as a company and, in partnership with Triton, we will be realising further opportunities for development and growth, helping Chevron and all its people to reach their full potential.”

“It is important for us all to work together to maximise the opportunities that lie ahead, as well as recognising the value of everyone in the business and what they can bring to Chevron’s success in the future.”

“As part of the deal, Chevron has become a sister company to Ramudden and we’ll be working together to share best practice and drive both businesses forward in the future.”

Matthew Turner, Chairman of Chevron, said: “As the newly appointed Chairman of Chevron, I believe we have exciting times ahead of us. This is the first UK investment for Triton, which is a strong and experienced investor with a

considerable commitment to the safety services sector.

“Working with our extremely capable management team, we intend to continue the successful growth of Chevron going forward.

“It is important for us all to work together to maximise the opportunities that lie ahead and recognise the value of everyone in the business and what they can bring to Chevron’s success in the future.”

TRAINING

Stafford training facility opens

More than 100 Chevron employees have now completed courses at our new training centre since it opened its doors in June.

The centre at our Staffordshire depot, which features an 11-bay CTX module on top of the existing ground floor offices, is helping to facilitate the Highways England Common Induction training requirement.

This Common Induction Training one-day course is a mandatory requirement for anyone wanting to access and work on the Highways England Strategic Road Network (SRN). Facilitated by Lantra, the course includes an end test with a 75% pass mark and certification is valid for three years.

All training records will be stored on the new passport system using smart card technology. The aim is to reduce site registration times by verifying the credentials of people accessing the network and providing a registry of people and skills that are on-site.

Chevron’s training and development team is delivering the course across the company and, to date, more than 100 Chevron employees have successfully completed the induction with a 100% pass rate!

The training course will be delivered across Chevron’s own supply chain, ahead of the 1 April 2019 deadline, and is also open to anyone else working on the HE Network.

Monthly Safety & Innovation Awards

The winners of the H&S Award since our last issue are:

January –Ian Boyd, TM Operative, (Newport), whose intervention ensured the safety of the travelling public when he found an elderly man walking down the dual carriageway during a night shift on the M4 near Reading. Ian showed great compassion and professionalism in helping the man to safety and prevented a more serious incident occurring.

February – Maurice Mackness, TM Operative (Finedon), for assisting a lone woman, who was stranded when her car tyre split on the A605 in Peterborough. Maurice arranged for the vehicle recovery, staying with the driver until help arrived and ensuring the safe removal of the stranded vehicle from the main carriageway.

March –Chris Harper, TM Operative (Stafford), who helped to avert a potential tragedy when he assisted a vulnerable young girl, who had climbed over a bridge barrier on the A50 near Stoke on Trent. After talking the girl off the bridge and alerting the police, he escorted her to safety and liaised with her carers to ensure she got home safely.

April – Brian Sokell, Andrew Spring and Lee Young, the daytime crew on the M1 enabling works (Tring), whose demonstration of Chevron’s ‘In Safe Hands’ approach contributed to a very positive Health & Safety Audit, which rated our standards as excellent. The continued positive safety behaviour of the crew sets a great example of Chevron to our clients and the general public.

June –Thatcham’s famous welfare van driver, Harry Moss, who at 74-years young always leads by example and goes above and beyond to serve our teams and various other contractors on site across the Area 3 network. His ongoing dedication and professionalism impresses all of those working with him, as well as our clients.

June – Gavin Muir, TM Foreman (Finedon), for the continual high standards of safety that he demonstrated during a recent site audit; leading by example and demonstrating an excellent attitude and approach to health and safety, which has ‘raised the bar’ on-site.

Safety is our business and these are great examples to illustrate the Chevron Way at work, and that everyone has a duty to ensure that they and their colleagues get home safely to their families and loved ones.

Well done all!

Remember the monthly prize is £100 and the annual prize is £1,000.

May – Daniel Hancox, TM Foreman (Newport), who took control of a confrontational situation when a member of the public was trying to enter the closed entry slip on the A34. He showed a great level of professionalism in being firm, but calm with the individual, despite their increasingly aggressive behaviour, to ensure a safe outcome.

July – Roger Ball, TSCO (Detling), for always going above and beyond to maintain a good working relationship with the site TSCO and the road space coordination teams on the M23 Kier Smart Motorway Project. Roger’s son Jake Bryan-Ball, TM Foreman (Detling), also receives the award for his short-term solution to prevent fuel thefts from our IPVs.

This year we have started a Mental Health & Wellbeing campaign to ensure that everyone understands and recognises the signs of mental health issues. To date, we have trained 20 Mental Health First Aiders and introduced a one-day training course for Mental Health Champions. Other initiatives include Mates in Mind (see page 4) and our Talk More campaign, where we have partnered with several TM companies to help reduce the stigma of mental health issues and get everyone talking.

Our online e-learning platform has been launched across the company, with courses being delivered to more than 800 people so far, including Chevron staff, our sub-contractor and agency workers. The interactive training platform allows courses, including instructional videos and interactive quizzes, to be emailed out to individuals or companies. The courses that have been delivered are spill response training, slips trips and falls training, GDPR and drivers’ induction training. Feedback has been positive so far, with people citing it as a useful tool for both training and compliance purposes.

There are also several more projects lined up for 2018, including the roll-out of our conflict management and ‘train the trainer’ Intellicones training, as well as gaining our accreditation in FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) to help us enhance quality standards.

Manchester Smart Motorways

As Manchester Smart Motorways nears completion, we look back over the past four years and the remarkable achievements of all those involved.

In early 2014 Chevron was awarded the Manchester Smart Motorways contract, the UK’s biggest TM scheme to date, covering both carriageways between the M60 J8 and the M62 J20.

Works commenced July 2014, with the Chevron team tasked with the traffic management over five sections, running concurrently and covering 30km end to end. This included responsibility for the temporary white lining (narrow lanes), plus multiple overnight lane, slip road and carriageway closures, as well as the

installation of an AirLock system and gatemen; requiring up to 11 crews per night and up to 76 people per shift, plus dedicated Supervision and Scheme Management.

We are currently in the final phase of the scheme, with snagging works commencing shortly and running alongside extensive resurfacing works being delivered via Area 10.

Our Thatcham team has been celebrating after winning Chevron’s Depot of the Year 2017 award.

Mike Fenner, Depot Manager, said: “We’re delighted to receive this award. All our staff are 100% dedicated to providing the best service and highest standards to our clients. We’ve worked tirelessly to improve

overnight closure crews, delivering 12,000 individual closures, with an AFR of zero for over half a million man hours worked, which is an outstanding achievement.

The feedback from the client (MSM JV) and from Highways England on the Chevron TM team has been positive throughout the contract. This has included us being commended for the quality of our workmanship, our can-do attitude, our safety record, the commercial savings we’ve been able to offer, and for our collaboration across the board.

Congratulations and thank you to all those involved.

the depot itself and we’re our proud to call ourselves a team. It’s onwards and upwards for Thatcham!”

Matt Morphet, Chief Operating Officer, commented: “Thatcham’s performance in delivering one of our biggest contracts, whilst engaging with Midvale and following the right processes, has been exemplary. They’ve also led the way in terms of their involvement in the Area 3 Supply Chain Community and won several awards, including recognition from Highways England. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
