November, 2018 Dear Friends, Our 100th Anniversary this past year allowed us as a community to celebrate our rich history. This milestone also provided an opportune time to discern what our goals and priorities are for our second century.

This spring, the Board of Trustees created a strategic planning committee that was tasked with setting the priorities and concrete goals that will shape and guide Cheverus as we enter our second century. Led by Trustee Peter LaMontagne 84, P?14, ?17, ?21, this committee was comprised of trustees, faculty, and administrators. Through a collaborative evaluation and planning process, the committee created a framework that defines who we are, outlined important criteria that will strengthen our mission, and ultimately, sets forth specific and measurable objectives to allow a clear and compelling course for the future. This plan, the Second CenturyV ision, was ratified by the Board of Trustees at their June meeting.

This multi-year plan will permeate all aspects of this community. The aim of this plan is to strengthen our commitment to our mission and calibrate our actions to the current needs of the school and community.

We want this process to be transparent and will continue to communicate updates on our progress to these goals. This plan will embolden us to enter our second century with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

Our Hist or y

Cheverus High School is a private, Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Society of Jesus. Founded on Free Street in Portland in 1917 as the Catholic Institute High School, Cheverus changed its name to Cheverus Classical High School in 1925, in honor of Bishop Jean-Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus, the first Bishop of Boston.

During its first 25 years, teaching and administration of the school were handled by the diocesan clergy, who also served as curates in local parishes.

In 1942, Bishop Joseph McCarthy, then Bishop of Portland, obtained the services of the Society of Jesus as teachers and Cheverus became a Jesuit-operated diocesan school.

In 1946 the Free Street building was sold and 32 acres of land were purchased along Back Cover on Ocean Avenue in Portland. Cheverus took up temporary residence in the St. Aloysius school on Cumberland Avenue in Portland while its new -- and current -- facility was being built. The new school opened in April 1952.

Under the stewardship of the Jesuits, Cheverus has grown to include both qualified male and female students, and remains committed to it founding principles of superior education and spiritual growth of the individuals - the hallmarks of a deeply rooted Jesuit philosophy spanning nearly 500 years. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491 - 1556) continues to inspire us.

The Ignatian vision of the magis is fundamental to the educational vision at Cheverus. Magis is Latin for ?more,? and in the Jesuit tradition, magis challenges the entire Cheverus community to seek the greater good and embody this vision by becoming men and women for and with others.

Pr ocess On the occasion of our 100th anniversary, the Board of Trustees created a Strategic Planning Committee charged with devising a strategic vision for Cheverus High School. Led by Trustee Peter LaMontagne ?84, P?14, ?17, ?21, the committee was comprised of trustees, leadership team members, and faculty & staff. The committee worked with the leadership team to draft and disseminate a survey, seeking input from both internal and external stakeholders, including current and former trustees, alumni council members, faculty & staff, parents, select Jesuits, select benefactors, and the President?s Council, the student liaisons to the president. In addition, leadership solicited feedback from some key stakeholders through in-person focus groups, offering a more personalized means of gathering relevant information. The feedback from both the stakeholder survey and the focus groups was collected and analyzed. Results were then shared with the leadership team for review. Ongoing dialogue between the leadership and the Committee informed the Committee about issues of high importance. Through a thoughtful, collaborative, and inductive process, the Committee drafted, and the Board approved the vision for our future and a strategic plan.

II. Ignat ian Ident it y - Grounded in our responsibility as the only co-educational Jesuit college preparatory high school in New England, Cheverus will strengthen its Ignatian identity in all aspects of our engagement with the Cheverus community and beyond.

III. Chever us High School is a Communit y - Our students, alumni, parents, faculty & staff, Jesuits, and the greater Portland/ Maine community (especially our brothers and sisters in need) all form the Cheverus family.

1. Implement Comprehensive Technology Modernization Plan designed to: -

Enhance the classroom experience using advanced technology and rich media.

Enable more and diversified advanced technology curriculum offerings.

Improve management efficiency and enhance stakeholder communications.

2. Attract and retain the most qualified and committed educators and staff through a market?leading Staff Development Plan which provides meaningful, long-term career planning and enrichment programs that will make teaching positions at Cheverus among the most highly sought after jobs in secondary education.

3. Ensure that our curriculum, extra-curricular offerings and approach to college advising enable and encourage students to aspire to, and gain acceptance from, their first choice college or university upon graduation from Cheverus.

4. Improve performing and fine arts programing.

5. Expand Instructional Support to a full Student Learning Center so that committed students of all academic backgrounds can achieve success at Cheverus.

6. Engage the wider Jesuit educational network to expand student and staff learning and exchange opportunities.

7. Seek to enroll qualified students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and abroad.

1. Work with the Society of Jesus Northeast Province to preserve the presence of Jesuits on the faculty and in leadership roles.

2. Increase the size and scope of the Campus Ministry office and interaction/ exchanges with other Jesuit Secondary Schools and Colleges.

3. Promote a more active relationship with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

4. Expand the Service Learning Program and offer the Cheverus Community more school break service opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally ? become a school community ?for and with others.?

5. Expand Kairos and other retreat/ faith formation programs to include the greater Cheverus community (e.g., parents, alumni, summer retreats).

6. Update Ignatian Formation Program for faculty & staff.

7. Establish Alumni Volunteer Corps.

8. Offer advanced and honors level courses in theology.

1. Increase our understanding of, support for, and engagement with our communities, including: -

Internal (direct Cheverus community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni).

Local & Regional (Greater Portland/ Maine community including the Diocese and regional Jesuit institutions).

Global (national and international community, including local refugees).

2. Improve public relations messaging to inform the communities of our contribution to and leadership within the community.

3. Expose students to opportunities outside of Cheverus of the internal community (e.g., job sharing, internships, field trips, and service programs).

4. Build more relationships between Cheverus and Catholic Charities and other local non-profit organizations serving those in need.

5. Pursue local, regional, national, and international exchange programs to enable our students, faculty & staff to learn more about our communities and share/ promote our Ignatian Identity.

1. Completion of essential infrastructure maintenance capital projects for our aging campus to ensure a safe and maintainable environment for our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.

2. Update previous Campus Master Plan to incorporate our Second CenturyV ision and: -

Focus on student body and faculty needs in line with our Academic Excellence and Ignatian Identity pillars (e.g., expanded tech offerings, continued athletic competitiveness, improving performing and fine arts programming).

Take advantage of our strategic location in Portland for possible summer use of the campus to generate revenue for the school (summer sports programs, academic camps, and retreats).Consider the Ignatian Carbon Challenge and seek to make the Cheverus campus as environmentally sensitive as possible.

Include a capital development and fulfillment plan with full funding of depreciation.

1. Increase class size to at least 115 students per year over 5-year period.

2. Expand financial aid and scholarship support to ensure that Cheverus is accessible to qualified students and committed families regardless of their financial means.

3. Maximize the investment of the Cheverus community by: -

Commit to consistent annual growth in the annual fund.

Increasing endowment by 30-50% over 5 years.

4. Promote more awareness in the wider Cheverus community of our financial needs and the impressive support we provide annually for our students with very limited financial resources.
