Dear Member of the Cheverus Community, Since its inception, one of the goals of Jesuit education has been to prepare students for a rapidly changing world, while forming competent and compassionate leaders. Over the past year, I have witnessed this preparation and response in real time and I could not be more proud. In this era of COVID-19, our administration, faculty, staff, students, and families continue to respond in inspiring and innovative ways and blaze a path forward. At Cheverus, we share one mission with a network of hundreds of Jesuit schools across the globe. In this Ignatian Year, we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius as well as the 80th year of Jesuit sponsorship of Cheverus. You will see in these pages that we continue this great Jesuit tradition here on Ocean Avenue from a position of financial strength, with a generous and growing community of support. I am deeply grateful for your commitment to our mission.

Dear Members of the Cheverus Community: We are pleased to present this Annual Report, with highlights from the 2020–21 fiscal year, and with grateful recognition of the alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, and business and corporate partners who provided generous support for our school, our students, and our mission: • Giving to all program areas from all sources totaled $1.14 million. • The Cheverus Fund closed on June 30 with $693,000 in unrestricted and currently spendable support, including $502,000 in unrestricted giving—the highest total in the school’s history. Alumni participation hit an all-time high of nearly 16%. • With the help of 43 alumni and parent volunteers, Cheverus Giving Day on March 25 yielded over $151,000, 501 donors, 131 first-time donors, 208 alumni gifts, 127 parent and grandparent gifts, and 14 matches and challenges.

• The 50th Reunion Class established the Class of 1971 Endowed Scholarship in honor of their reunion, contributing twice the amount required to create a new endowed fund. Class members were able to receive their Golden Diplomas in person as part of the graduation festivities at Merrill Auditorium on June 7. We extend our deepest thanks to the dedicated volunteers, sponsors, and donors who supported the Golf Classic, Homecoming Re-Imagined, Class Reunions, Grandparents’ Day, the Cheverus Auction & Gala, and our virtual alumni and parent gatherings. In true Cheverus fashion, this community rose above the lingering challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, rallying together not only to persevere, but to excel. The above results are indeed a testament to the limitless dedication of the Cheverus family. As we look back on this past year with great pride, we look forward to the years ahead with renewed strength, optimism, sense of purpose, and faith in our mission. Sincerely,

Celebrating the Ignatian Year Assumptionist Fr. Claude Marechal defined a religious charism as, “a story to enter, a language to speak, a group to which to belong, a way to pray, a work to undertake, a face of God to see.” The Ignatian charism is the foundation of the Society of Jesus. It is a story that everyone at Cheverus has entered, and is what distinguishes Cheverus as a Jesuit, Catholic school. The Ignatian family is the global community to which we belong. The Examen, A.M.D.G, Magis, people for and with others, and cura personalis, these words and phrases comprise the language we speak. Educating young men and women on Ocean Avenue in Portland, Maine is the apostolic work Cheverus undertakes. Our experiences and relationships with one another as members of this community—that is the face of God to see. The cannonball moment we celebrate during this Ignatian Year was the defining moment for the stubborn Basque nobleman-turned-contemplative we know as St. Ignatius. The gifts of that life-changing injury, convalescence, and spiritual conversion ripple across half a millennium of time. Our collective journeys are shaped by the experiences of Ignatius. Throughout the year, we will showcase reflections from the men and women who animate our mission and hear their Ignatian stories. These partners in the mission each entered the Ignatian story—our shared story—and through their vocation, express the rich tradition of our Ignatian charism.

Care for our Common Home - Freshman Retreat This fall, the Cheverus Class of 2025 concluded their two-day freshman retreat Ignite Your Spirit with a service day. In this Ignatian year, the service day focused on the Jesuit's Universal Apostolic Preference to care for our common home. All freshmen, along with their senior leaders and faculty and staff chaperones, spent a spectacular October morning outside working at orchards, community gardens, farms, and parks across greater Portland. Together they maintained trails, put gardens to bed, laid mulch, hauled brush, removed invasive species, and picked up litter. Students learned to be active stewards of our environment while serving at Boyd Street Urban Garden, Hurricane Valley Farm, Mt. Joy Public Orchard, Riverton Community Garden, Portland Parks Conservancy, and Portland Trails. A Perfect Fall! This fall, two teams had perfect seasons. Under the leadership of Head Coach Theresa Hendrix ’10, the Cheverus field hockey team won their first Class A state championship, finishing a perfect season with a win against powerhouse Skowhegan. Coach Hendrix was also named SMAA Co-coach of the year. The football team captured their first state championship as an eight-man team and the first for the school since winning Class A in 2011. Under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Vance, the Stags were triumphant over Waterville at the state title game and did not allow a point in the last 22 quarters of their season. Kathryn Ray Academic Vice Principal Ignatian Formation: Ray was introduced to the Ignatian Family through her graduate work at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, where she was a member of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps at the Lynch School of Education and Human Development. While Ray earned a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, she lived in community with other graduate students who were all volunteer teachers in several of Boston's Catholic schools. This is her second year at Cheverus.
“ As a Jesuit educator, I believe the most important part of my job is building relationships. I recently attended the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice alongside 12 of our students. Engaging with these students in an experience that they were passionate about allowed me to enter into their world and see it from their point of view. ahern scholarship The Elizabeth Gillis and Leonard F. Ahern Memorial Scholarship recipient for the 2021–2022 school year is Jackson Krieger ’22. Leonard Ahern, a lifelong teacher in the Washington, DC metro area, established the scholarship upon his death in 2008. The scholarship that bears his name and that of his beloved mother, is chosen through a Cheverus selection committee process and awards $30,000 to a Cheverus senior with demonstrated need. The recipient's fulfillment of the “Grad at Grad” profile, being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice is the focus of the committee's assessment. In his application essay on being open to growth Krieger said,
“As I prepare for my future endeavors, I can walk away saying I lived my four years with no regrets, challenged myself, had fun, and became comfortable being uncomfortable.” Krieger is the son of Joshua and Tamara Krieger and lives in Cape Elizabeth. He plans to study business in college.

Paul A. Lagacé ’74 Paul was a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and expert in advanced composites and their application to aircraft structures. He died in July at the age of 63. He was the beloved husband of Robin, his wife of 38 years. A Lewiston native, Lagacé was the son of a painter and paperhanger and a stay-at-home mother. He took a keen interest in furthering his education, first at Cheverus then at MIT. His wife said he “appreciated the fact that the Jesuits challenged him to think, to question, to explore.” After his graduation from Cheverus, Lagacé received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from MIT. As a first-generation college student, Lagacé took a life-long interest in supporting first-generation college students. His wife Robin said, “I believe first-generation students were of interest to him, because of his own personal experience. He tried to encourage them and help them see how they could grow, what they could become professionally, even an MIT professor.”

José Peralta Theology Teacher Ignatian Formation: Peralta first fell in love with the Jesuits in 1984 in the Lower East Side of New York where he attended Nativity Mission Center School. He went on to be a camp counselor at the Jesuit Camp Monserrate in the Adirondacks for 10 summers. After college, Peralta lived in a Jesuit Community in Harlem and worked at Jesuit middle school, St. Aloysius Gonzaga. He then worked with Fr. John Foley, S.J., who started the Cristo Rey Schools in Chicago, and taught at St. Procopius School in Chicago while living in the Jesuit Community. Peralta is in his 14th year at Cheverus.
“Everything I have gained in this world has been because of my Jesuit education. Being a member of the Ignatian Family here at Cheverus High School and getting to live out my Ignatian values every day is a dream come true. I love teaching at a Jesuit school where I get to live out the Ignatian values every day.”

Anne Theriault Theology Teacher Ignatian Formation: Theriault was first introduced to the Ignatian family when she attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. After graduating, she taught through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps at St. Xavier's School in Kathmandu, Nepal, and then did her graduate work at Weston Jesuit School of Theology (now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry). Theriault worked as an affiliate retreat and spiritual director, supporting students and alumni of Holy Cross on the Spiritual Exercises. This is her first year teaching at Cheverus.
“I care most about cura personalis and the holistic wellbeing of each student. Through the teaching of Theology, I try to help students make connections among their faith, their studies and their day-to-day lives. I see teaching and chaplaincy as the ways to do my part in sharing God's love and in fostering greater social awareness.”

Rodger Cilley English Teacher Ignatian Formation: Cilley was first introduced to the Ignatian family when he attended Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY. He taught for eight years at Rockhurst High in Kansas City, MO, and six years at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, WA, during which time he also received his Principal's Certification from Gonzaga University, Spokane, WA. Cilley is in his 15th year teaching at Cheverus.
