Dear Cheverus Community, This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Cheverus. What a momentous occasion it is!

In 1917, when Bishop Walsh oversaw the creation of a Catholic boys school on Free Street, one concern was educating young men to be prepared for the world that awaited them, one in which the Great War was at hand. Bishop Walsh knew these boys needed to be prepared for a rapidly changing world.

Today, under the sponsorship of the Jesuits, that Catholic school for boys now educates young men and women and continues to prepare them for a more globalized and complex world. Cheverus students are equipped not only with a strong academic foundation, but also a spiritual and ethical formation that differentiates them from their peers and allows them to flourish.

These young men and women are poised to be leaders in our global world, anchored by their understanding that we belong to one another. Cheverus students are part of a community where they are known and loved. While at Cheverus, these young men and women grow closer to God and learn how their talents can serve the needs of their times.

As we chart the course for our second century, Cheverus will maintain fidelity to our mission of educating young men and women to be people for and with others. We will elevate our excellence and continue to build a community that allows our students to not only discern their relationship with God, but also work to create a more just and humane world.

What gratitude I have for all those who have brought Cheverus through the first 100 years. It is through the generosity of generations that we stand here today, and through the devotion of alumni, faculty, staff, student, parents, and friends, that we energetically embark on our next 100 years.

The tenets of our mission are timeless. The love of our God is never ending.

I ask that you pray in thanksgiving for all those who have passed through our halls and positively impacted our world in large and small ways, and pray in hope that God’s love will continue to grace our school community and guide us as we continue to educate young men and women of competence, compassion, conscience, and commitment.

Dear Members of the Cheverus Community: We are pleased to present this Annual Report, with highlights from fiscal year 2016–17 and with grateful recognition of the alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, and business & corporate partners who provided generous support for our mission last year.

• Giving to all program areas from all sources totaled $1,023,000.

• The Cheverus Fund—which serves as the foundation of our fundraising efforts and remains a top philanthropic priority—closed on June 30 with $577,515 in unrestricted and currently spendable support, a record high. The Cheverus Step-Up Challenge, launched in the final quarter of the fiscal year, provided the momentum for this milestone, as a handful of generous donors collectively committed $100,000 if 500 additional donors made gifts between April 1st and June 30th. The 500 donor target was achieved, resulting in the highest overall participation rate in Cheverus’ history: 1,266 donors.

• Support for Greater Glory Scholarships, which provide significant levels of tuition assistance over multiple years, increased tremendously this past year, setting a new standard for expanding this critical program in the coming years.

• Gifts to endowment totaled $283,892, with notable additions to existing funds and including the establishment of three new endowed funds that will exist in perpetuity providing scholarship support for deserving students on an annual basis.

• Inspired by the generosity of an anonymous trustee who pledged to make a five-figure Cheverus Fund gift should the senior class surpass the 50% participation mark in their Senior Gift Campaign, the Class of 2017 rose to the challenge and exceeded all expectations with 76% participation.

We especially acknowledge the extraordinary gifts of time and treasure provided by our dedicated sponsors, volunteers, and donors who supported the Golf Classic, the Annual Benefit Auction, Homecoming, Grandparents’ Day, and our regional alumni and parent gatherings. You have our heartfelt thanks.

As we celebrate Cheverus’ 100th anniversary, commemorating our rich history while looking with high aspirations toward our second century, we renew our unwavering commitment to our tradition of excellence; and above all, we thank you yet again for your steadfast faith in our mission and your investment in this very special place.

Miller Brothers Endowed Fund

The Thomas M. McNulty Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for Cheverus students with demonstrated financial need through a generous contribution from Patricia McNulty, sister of the honoree. Mr. McNulty, a former Cheverus faculty member in the Theology department, was impressed by the School’s sense of community and dedication to providing an excellent faith-based education. He did not want the lack of financial resources to deny any student the opportunity to attend Cheverus.

The Miller Brothers Endowed Fund was established to provide financial assistance for Cheverus students with demonstrated financial need through a generous commitment from Maeve Rockefeller, mother of the honorees, Alexander G. Miller of the Class of 2011 and Maxwell J. Miller of the Class of 2010.

President’s Scholarship Making and keeping a Cheverus education accessible for deserving students lies at the very heart of our mission. Yet many students face seemingly insurmountable obstacles that stand in the way of this life-changing opportunity. The President’s Scholarship was established to provide tuition assistance to students with extreme demonstrated financial need and/or other difficult family or personal circumstances. The President’s Scholarship specifically supports students who may otherwise not have the opportunity to benefit from the intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth that defines the Cheverus experience. The President of Cheverus has the authority to select the recipient of the award. This scholarship was established through an initial gift made collectively by several donors at the 2017 Cheverus Benefit Auction.

In September, the entire Cheverus community came together for a special Mass of the Holy Spirit, a centuries-old Jesuit tradition that starts the school year. Marking the 100th Anniversary, Bishop Deeley celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Homecoming weekend brought alumni, students, parents, and friends back to campus to join in the celebration of the Cheverus Family.

The 100th Anniversary History Wall, created by John H. R. Mullen, was unveiled in October, and marked the start of Homecoming 2017. The wall is a visual history of that past 100 years, and alumni and friends enjoyed taking a walk down memory lane.

AHERN SCHOLARSHIP This year, the Elizabeth Gillis and Leonard F. Ahern Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Sydney Pfeffer ’18. Sydney is the daughter of Richard and Dona Pfeffer of Portland. The recipient, who receives $30,000 towards college, is chosen through a Cheverus selection committee process. The scholarship recognizes a member of the the senior class who fulfills the “Grad at Grad” profile by being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, is committed to doing justice, and who has demonstrated financial need. Sydney has played field hockey and raced for the alpine ski team since freshman year - serving as captain of the ski team for the third year, is a Key Club member, retreat leader and campus minister, and has been a part of Girl Scouts for the past 12 years. Sydney wrote in her application essay:

Barbara J. Tully Memorial Scholarship When Paul Tully ’65 celebrated his seventh decade, he didn’t want a lot of fanfare.

However, his family wanted to celebrate this milestone birthday and surprised him with a party. They also marked the occasion by setting up a scholarship at Cheverus in memory of his late wife, Barbara Tully. “I’ve got everything I need. Honoring my wife Barbara, an educator herself, with this scholarship to mark my birthday was very special to me,” said Tully. Barbara Tully was a life-long learner and always recognized how much Cheverus meant to her husband. Paul’s time here at Cheverus was formative. The academic foundation he received and the moral and ethical standards instilled in him served him well throughout his business career. In another way, Cheverus set in motion a series of opportunities that were great blessings to him. He noted that if it were not for Cheverus, he would not have gone to Fordham University for college, another Jesuit institution that made a lasting impression on his life. If he had not gone to Fordham, Tully said he never would have met his wife. The creation of the scholarship in her name brings it full circle. Paul Tully’s Cheverus education had a direct impact on the trajectory of his life, and this scholarship aims to do the same for another.

“I hope others would consider setting up a scholarship in memory of a loved one, and I hope that this scholarship offers students an opportunity for a Cheverus education that might not otherwise have one.”

The Greater Glory Scholarship speaks to the heart of the mission of Cheverus - fostering students who become people for and with others. This scholarship provides a way for donors to make a significant difference in the life of a young person by making a Cheverus education possible. Many donors want to make a difference in the life of a student, but are unable to meet the financial requirements of establishing an endowed scholarship. The Greater Glory Program makes this possible. Through a minimum contribution of $5,000 each year, spendable within the year in which it is received, individual donors, families, or groups, such as alumni classes, are matched to a particular student throughout their four years of high school. Through the generosity of Greater Glory donors, students who would not be financially able to attend Cheverus are afforded this transformative education.

1957 Memorial Scholarship Upon the passing of their classmate Joseph “Terry” Coyne in October of 2016, members of the Class of 1957 wanted to do something special for Cheverus to honor Terry’s memory. The Class of 1957 Memorial Scholarship pays tribute not only to Terry, but to all members of the Class of 1957 who have passed. The Fund will stand as a means to recognize future honorees as appropriate in any given year.

The Path to Becoming a Jesuit If you spend an hour in Loyola Hall, you are bound to run into Mr. Sean Hagerty, S.J. If he is not teaching his junior or sophomore theology class, he is connecting with people around the building, stopping by someone’s office, getting to know them, exchanging high fives in the hallway, offering a cheerful “Good Morning,” with a twinkle in his eye and a dimple in his cheek. You won’t miss him, he is the young guy in the Roman collar.

Mr. Hagerty entered the Society of Jesus in 2012. That earned him the S.J. after his name and the Roman collar. He has taken vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, but has not yet been ordained. Mr. Hagerty is not yet a priest; he is a Regent. Jesuits have the longest path to ordination among the religious orders in the Church. Mr. Hagerty has already completed his two-year Novitiate and his First Studies, the start of his academic formation.

He earned a master’s degree in Philosophy from St. Louis University last spring. Now in the Regency period, he will likely spend two or three years teaching at Cheverus. Regents, or Scholastics as they are sometime called, typically teach in a Jesuit school, work in campus ministry, or in a social ministry connected with a Jesuit Community. Mr. Hagerty lives in the Jesuit Residence along with our President, Fr. Bob Pecoraro, S.J., and our Faculty and Staff Chaplain, Fr. Bob Levens, S.J.

Mr. Hagerty, a cradle Catholic who grew up in Manhattan, attended Catholic school K–12, and graduated from Xavier High School, a Jesuit secondary school. He enjoyed his time at Xavier and his interactions with the Jesuits there, but he says despite knowing the traditions and Catholic culture, he was essentially an atheist when he graduated high school. A vocation was the farthest thing from his mind.

The attacks of September 11 occurred in the fall of his senior year. The attacks on his hometown had a direct impact on his next step. He wanted to serve his country and he received an ROTC scholarship to Fordham University. With this choice, he thought he knew his life’s path: to be a career Army officer. He entered Fordham, enjoyed college life to the fullest, played water polo, and thought very little about his faith until he went on retreat his sophomore year. It was as if a switch had been flipped. On retreat, he connected with Jesuits he described as smart, engaging, curious—and most importantly—happy men. Perhaps the seed had been planted. He took some theology classes and found the material fascinating. The thought of being a Jesuit entered his mind, but was quelled by more pressing matters. He still had an Army commitment ahead of him. He did, however, start attending Mass every evening in Spellman Hall.

Once graduated and commissioned, 2LT Hagerty’s first duty station was Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. He was greeted with a temperature of 45 degrees below zero and slid across an ice covered roadway on his first day. This was not Manhattan. This was America’s last frontier, 4,200 miles northwest of the Big Apple.

At the time, the U.S. was involved in a protracted war, and Hagerty was part of an infantry company that eventually deployed to Diyala Province, Iraq for one year. He spent most of his time in Iraq at a Forward Operating Base, close to mortar attacks and far away from a Chaplain. He realized in Iraq just how important Mass was. In that place, he yearned for the Sacraments. His faith grew. In the midst of a war, marked by long days and high-stress situations, Hagerty would try, when he could, to hop on a convoy in an effort to make it to a more populated base in hopes of catching a Mass. He was able to attend Mass only a handful of times that year.

Once he returned to the States, he realized he did not aspire to be a career Army Officer, and CPT Hagerty left the Army after his ROTC obligation was fulfilled. Hagerty moved back to New York, got a job as the night shift manager at a Budweiser warehouse, and transitioned back to civilian life. His leadership experience in the Army and, no doubt, his engaging personality made an impression with upper management. Mr. Hagerty ascended the ranks quickly at Budweiser. Ultimately, he got a big promotion and moved to Los Angeles. He was working his way up the corporate ladder, dating a nice girl, and was making a really good living. This was the path that he thought he was supposed to take.

This was the perceived path to happiness. The only problem was he was incredibly unhappy. The whispers of a vocation got louder. He remembered the happiness he saw in those Jesuits at Fordham, and thought maybe that was his path to happiness.

He entered a meeting with his bosses and let them know he was leaving his job.

He was going to become a Jesuit. His bosses didn’t see that one coming.

Mr. Hagerty spent his Novitiate serving as a prison chaplain and caring for ICU and hospice patients.

He accompanied people through their last moments on earth. Hagerty also took St. Ignatius’ 30-day Spiritual Exercises silent retreat. It was in this silence that he realized he is truly loved by God. It became clear to him, that with all one’s flaws and brokenness, God still really does love you. Maybe this is why those Jesuits were so happy. God loved them and they knew He did.

Coming to Cheverus has been a great joy to Mr. Hagerty. Already, in the short time he has been here, he has experienced Cheverus hospitality. “I was the stranger and have been welcomed,” he said. He loves nothing more than connecting with his colleagues and the students. He recognizes the long tradition of having Regents here at Cheverus, and feels blessed to be part of this community. And he is happy. He is glad he chose his path to happiness: being a Jesuit. Cheverus is grateful he heeded the call.

Giving Back, Building Community When Schuyler Thaxter ’65 came back to Cheverus to celebrate his 50th class reunion and Golden Graduation Ceremony, he was reminded what a special place Cheverus is.

He couldn’t quite believe that his class got a standing ovation from graduates, parents, and friends. Thaxter shared some of his memories from Cheverus when he came back to campus this fall. As he walked the halls, he reminisced about where his physics and math classes were in the main building, where the small chapel was in Room 25, and he commented about the bustling students as they made their way to class, “They are so young!” Schuyler and his classmates were young once, too, and they made lifelong friends in these hallways.

He has a close-knit group of classmates that he still gets together with today.

“ I love seeing these kids and a program like this come to life. It feels good to give back to a place that meant so much to me.”

After his milestone reunion, Schuyler thought about the best way he could give back to Cheverus. Having spent 27 years as a library and media specialist, Thaxter knew it would have something to do with the library.

Ms. Jane Glass, our Librarian, introduced the idea of the Community Focus Program, where all members of the Cheverus community read one book and engage in conversation and activities related to the common book.

It is sort of a school-wide book club. This year, the book is Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven. Students met in September and the initial discussion led by faculty and staff leaders centered around a theme from the book: “art is what makes us human, because survival is insufficient.” The Community Focus initiative will continue throughout the year with interdisciplinary components that integrate themes of morality, importance of artistic expression, and preparations for a rapidly changing world. Through Thaxter’s generous annual contributions, this initiative, as well as other library-focused initiatives, will continue to enrich the lives of students.

The Cheverus Golf Classic

The 2017 Cheverus Golf Classic took place on September 6. It was a memorable day, marked by torrential rain and flooded greens. The soggy weather did not dampen the spirits of the golfers. Although the tournament was called, players enjoyed lunch and fellowship in the warm, dry, dining room of our wonderful host, the Falmouth Country Club. The proceeds from this event provide current-use funding to students with financial needs. We are especially grateful to all those who attended this year, despite weather conditions.
