Scholarships About Chevalier College We are a 7-12 coeducational Catholic school, owned and conducted by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC). At Chevalier College everyone is welcomed and valued. We are an inclusive, safe environment where you will be nurtured, challenged and supported to find and pursue your passion. For Year 7 students entering Chevalier College in 2022, we are pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to apply for three scholarships, largely due to the generosity of the philanthropic supporters of the college. These scholarships have been created to honour three great men, all of whom had a close relationship with the college and its history: 1. 2. 3.

All our scholarships are intended for students from families whose financial circumstances would otherwise make it challenging to enrol their child at Chevalier College. In addition, there are other attributes being sought in the young people fortunate enough to be offered these scholarships, such as academic aptitude and involvement in volunteer and extracurricular activities e.g. sport, music, drama. These are competitive scholarships but each is also financially means-tested for applicants. Generally, the means test indicator would be that a family is in receipt of a government support benefit of some kind. In addition to these scholarships, Chevalier has bursaries and fee relief programs for students to support families who could not otherwise afford to enrol at our college but who believe it is the best educational option for their child. The Tyson Doneley Scholarship In memory of Fr Tyson Doneley msc OAM (1921 - 2015) Fr Tyson Ignatius Doneley, a Catholic priest with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC), served as Rector of Chevalier College from 1960-65. 1.
Fr Doneley was an outstanding scholar, teacher and sportsman and conveyed his values and standards to many students at Chevalier College during his tenure. His prowess as a cricket player and rugby footballer was exceptional and dated back to his education at St Joseph’s College in Sydney. The positive impact his leadership and example had on the college and the students of the 1960s was such that, commencing in 2012, an endowment was created by donations from his former students and family to award a scholarship in his honour. That campaign was led by the late Hon. John Fahey AC. Fr Doneley was the first recipient of the Esprit du Chevalier Medal, created as the college’s highest public honour, and awarded at NSW Parliament House in 2014, the same occasion at which the first scholarship winner was announced.

Fr Doneley has the unique distinction of educating three state premiers: Mike Ahern AO (QLD Premier 1987-89) at Downlands College Toowoomba QLD; John Fahey AC (NSW Premier 1992-95) at Chevalier College Bowral NSW; and Barry O’Farrell (NSW Premier 2011-14) at St John’s College Darwin NT. Fr Doneley received the Order of Australia award in 2012 in recognition of his long career with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, being ordained in 1946 in Melbourne by Archbishop Mannix. As well as serving in the roles of Rector (Headmaster and Community Superior) at Chevalier College and St John’s College, he was Director of Studies and Sportsmaster at Downlands for extended periods. His MSC work also saw him undertake missionary, teaching and formation roles in Papua New Guinea, Japan, Fiji, India and Indonesia. He finally retired to Kensington in 2009 after an active career of more than 60 years. Fr Doneley passed away in 2015.

The Victor A. Consunji Scholarship In memory of Victor A. Consunji (1950 - 2018) Victor Almeda Consunji was an international boarding student at Chevalier College in the mid 1960s. Hailing from the Philippines, Victor was the second son of David and Fredesvinda Almeda Consunji, and followed his elder brother Isidro (Sid) Consunji CPS 1965 and his sister Josefa (Jing), the oldest of the siblings, to the NSW Southern Highlands for their high school education. Victor’s cousin, Felipe Cruz, had joined him and Sid as Filipino boarders at Chevalier. They were all three elegant and proficient tennis players and together helped form the basis of some strong tennis teams of that time, coached by the legendary Viv McGrath. Victor was also a junior dux and an enthusiastic rugby player. On his return to the Philippines, Victor graduated from the Ateneo de Davao University with a degree in political science and went to work in a huge variety of roles
across the growing family company, initially in agriculture and forestry and then the mining and power generation arms. Over the course of that time he engaged in many philanthropic endeavours too numerous to list but became well known as a patron of the arts in the Philippines. Victor was the chairman of the Divine Word School based on Semirara Island, where the family company had large mining and other business ventures. He had also supported the establishment of a trade school. Victor had a passion for ensuring the island’s youth were provided with good sporting facilities, such as tennis and basketball courts and an Olympic sized swimming pool because he remembered from his time at Chevalier College how important sport had been to his own development and that of his classmates. He was a great benefactor to his former college.
Victor never married but dedicated his life to the family enterprises and to the legacy and values of his parents, David and Fredesvinda. He passed away after a short illness in December 2018. Funds donated by the Consunji family have enabled this memorial scholarship to be offered for the years 2022 to 2027. 1. The John Fahey Scholarship In memory of the Hon. John Fahey AC (1945 - 2020)

John Fahey won a bursary to attend Chevalier College, enrolling in 1958 and graduating in 1962. From humble beginnings, John developed his potential and often credited the college with being a critical element in the formation of his character, his moral values and principles. In his leaving year John was a prefect, a leader in the college’s Young Catholic Society, cadet under officer, captain of the First XI cricket team and a member of a much-acclaimed First XV rugby team. Following his Leaving Certificate, John initially studied for the priesthood but then opted instead to study law and pursue his footballing career both as a player and coach. After a time in legal practice, John was elected to the NSW Parliament in 1984 and rose to become a minister and then premier from 1992-1995. During that time, aside from the reforms and governance work of the day, John also became etched

in the public memory for his courageous act of leaping to thwart what appeared to be a would-be assassination of Prince Charles by a man wielding a gun, and then later famously leaping for joy in Monaco when Sydney was awarded the 2000 Olympics. Following the defeat in the close state election in 1995, John was then elected to the Federal Parliament in 1996 and immediately appointed to a cabinet role as Minister for Finance and Administration, a role he held for six years until his retirement from politics. Since his retirement, John maintained some corporate advisory work and many other involvements, but then also took on the major role as the President of the World Anti Doping Agency from 200813. In 2019 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in recognition of his service to the Catholic Church in Australia. He was also the
Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University from 2014 until his death in 2020. In 2016, John Fahey became the 10th recipient of the Esprit du Chevalier Medal, the college’s highest public honour. John’s children Matthew (CPS* 1987), Melanie (CPS 1990) and Tiffany (CPS 1996) also all attended Chevalier College. The college has established the initial John Fahey Memorial Scholarship to honour his connection to Chevalier College and is currently fundraising for an endowment to ensure the award can be continued into the future. 1. Selection Criteria 1. The financial need of the family is genuine and able to be evidenced. Generally if a family is in receipt of a federal family benefit or would qualify to receive it, then that is an indicator of reasonable financial need. 2. Prospective students should have a demonstrated aptitude and personal motivation for continual academic growth. 3. Prospective students should be active, if not proficient, in one or more interests outside academic pursuits such as sport, music, arts or other extracurricular interests. Activities that demonstrate citizenship through volunteer work/activities will be well regarded. 4. Prospective students should possess values and behaviour that are consistent with the MSC ethos. The scholarship will cover all or part of the tuition fees deemed mandatory by the college for the completion of years 7-12.* *Refer to the college fee schedule for details regarding what is covered in tuition fees. In applying for this scholarship you are giving Chevalier College permission to contact the current school the prospective student attends, to obtain a confidential verbal reference from the relevant staff of the school. 6. Short listed applicants will be asked to attend an interview at the college. The successful recipient will be notified as soon as possible and will be expected to commence in 2022 at the college.
