The project relates to almost every person living in the City of Pune.

THE GREEN LANE CAMPAIGN Aashik Jain cycled from SHRINAGAR to KANYAKUMARI for 48 days.

Pune once known as “The Cycling city of ASIA” has still not lost much essence of it.

Cycling could be still a preferred option for commuting in the city if there is the right infrastructure for it.

Cycle tracks that were present in the City often failed to attract people as they were improperly planned and failed to provide basic infrastructure that is actually essential.

Cycling is just not a way towards healthy living but a healthy lifestyle; it is an appropriate mode of transport than rather being only just a medium for exercise and sports.

The project will be in the City of Pune.

It will try to create a healthy environment for people and cycling in the City.

It will enrich the experience of living and in turn provide a healthy lifestyle.

It will bring back the historic and social value of the City that existed earlier.

The project will include various built factors necessary for the easy and regular commutation of people using bicycles; without harming the mass public mode of transport and also utilizing the possible ways to increase the interdependencies of the two modes of transport.

It will include development of City cycle map, essential infrastructure, street furniture, maintenance & transition hubs, etc. and a policy to implement this throughout the City.

To study Live Scenario I completed approx. 200km of cycling in the City. Exploring the main core city; Peths, Deccan, PMC, Pune Camp, Warje, Kothrud, Karvenagar and also till the extent of fringes including; Yerawada, Kalyaninagar, Vimannagar, Koregaon Park, Hadapsar, Swargate, Katraj, Hinjewadi, Nighdi, Bhosri, Khadki,etc.

BICYCLE SHARING SYSTEMS: A bicycle sharing System, public bicycle system, or bike share scheme, is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals on a very short term basis. bike schemes allow people to borrow a bike from point “A” and return at point “B”.

Many bike shares schemes offer subscriptions that make the first 30 to 45 minutes of use very inexpensive, encouraging their use as transportation. This allows each bike to serve several users per day. In most bike share cities, people seeking a bicycle for casual riding over several hours or days are better served by bicycle rental than bike share. For many systems smartphone mapping apps show near by stations increasing convenience for the users.

History: Bike share began in Europe in 1965 and viable format emerged in the mid 2000 thanks to the introduction of IT (information technology). As of June 2014, public bike sharing systems were available on 5 continents, including 712 cities, operating approximately 806200 bicycles at 37,500 stations.

Bike sharing systems in China are the largest in the world with arount 90,000 bicycles and over 2400 stations. the Velib in Paris comprises around 20,000 bicycles and 1450 bicycles stations is the second largest The countries with the most systems are: Ÿ Spain (132) Ÿ Italy (104) Ÿ China (79) Bicycles sharing systems can be divided into two general categories : Ÿ Community bike programs, organized mostly by local community groups or non-profit organizations. Ÿ Smart bike programs, implemented by government agencies or sometimes public-private partnership The central concept of these systems is to provide free or affordable access to bicycles for short distance trips in urban area as an alternative to motorized public transport or private vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution.

The reasons people use bicycle share vary considerably.

Some who would otherwise use their own bicycles have concerns about theft or vandalism, parking or storage and maintenance requirements.

A non-profit organisation led by a youngster, Raj Janagam, was awarded the contract for introducing 300 cycles on rent, with 25 stations. Raj, who had already run a pilot in Mumbai with 750 bikes, quoted Rs.7 crore, half of which would be funded by the PMC, and the other half would be raised through advertisement and corporate sponsorships. The actual rent would have been low, just enough to help in the maintenance of the bikes.

However, after a year of running from pillar to post, the organisation could not find enough sponsors and hence had to give up the project. “No corporate was ready to fund us. They did not see the viability,” Mr. Janagam told The Hindu. He also tried approaching the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, (BMC), but its response was lukewarm.

As the title says, the main aim of the project is to bring back the essence of cycling/cycle city to Pune city.

Developing a cycle map was the direct solution visible, but there had been the initiation on same level by many. So it meant, there was something that was left, missed, misinterpreted or forgotten OR JUST not considered.

(III) PROJECT Understanding the issue to the details, it was details, proper planning, intention, identifying proper location, awareness, motivation and many such aspects were misunderstood, not looked for just missed.

(IV) PROJECT DRIVING FORCES (IVA) LOCATION

(IV B) USER GROUP

Before moving ahead, it was necessary to locate a highly potential site for implementation of any kind of project or policy.

Potential was first considered as:High level of 'positive' conscience or concern of location in people's or residents perception.

Good and vibrant population/stakeholders must be active, concerned, educated, willing to accept to change.

Probably centre of the city.

Must be appealing to the youth of Pune.

To consider and identify the user group.

Potential is considered as:Young children (going to school) [10 years -18 years] AS -They are young minds and easy to convert. They still have no official license to be able to ride motorised vehicle. They have a sense of ownership and freedom and also love and pride towards CYCLE. Youth (going to college/jobs) [18 years – 30 years] AS -They are driving force of the future.

If they can converge to this, that's the maximum population which actually utilises M.V.

CONSIDERING I, II, III and IV (A & B) F.C ROAD It was found to be on exact or most appropriate example of site to execute the IDEA. A study was carried out to understand the existing fabric (social, commercial) of the area.

The land use pattern was understood.

All study required to properly justify (IV A) and (IV B) were carried out.

Considering the tendency of students turning towards motorized vehicles after completing 18yrs of age, Youth was considered as the major end user group to be targeted.

Hence choosing the age group from young 10yrs to working adults of 30yrs.

The project still aims to envisage a Cycling City for all age groups.

AIMING AT THE AGE GROUP FROM 10YRS TO 30YRS (YOUTH) Cafes, Eateries, Restaurants were chosen as Category 1 and Schools, Colleges and Institutes were chosen as Category 2 , where the identified age group (YOUTH) could be easily found in higher numbers occupied in various activities also which provide strong destination points to the city level crowd.

Further walk able 1km radius/2km diameter circles were made on the areas having maximum density of the specific category.

Intersections of CIRCLES provide a proper demarcation of necessity of Pedestrian Friendly /NONMOTORISED zone in and around the Campus, it also denotes the major youth active zones in the city.

Bicycle stations - Cycle Chalao

PUNE CONTEXT STUDY (Considering Location and User Group) Bicycle Stations as proposed by Mr. Raj Jaganam. Ÿ The location of the stations was to be finalized after a user preference and brand value research and with mutual consent of Pune Municipal Corporation. Ÿ Expected cycle routes to be in most congested parts of the city. Ÿ Distance between each station to be not more than 400‐500 meters. Thus making the locations the most dense media and operational network of the city. Ÿ • The prime locations like Major transport hubs, markets, office places and universities.

Co‐branding with the official logo over key space of the station.

Stations to be up and operational 24 hours round the year.

Locations of the stations to be decided keeping in view maximum exposure plus best of operational potential.

REASONS FOR RE-VISITING (IV A) (VIABILITY) The resolving of area like F.C. Road, which is in the centre of the city seemed exactly correct, but the connecting future growth would again lead to a long process of re-identifying the new location with new criteria's for potential choice.

Practically direct intervening into core area seemed difficult.

Approaching and solving the problem at/for 1st mile travelling seem more viable.

Choosing a neighbourhood seemed easy to solve 1st mile travelling.

If a neighbourhood was made cyclable in itself, connecting various / numerable such neighbourhoods would easily achieve AIM (I).

Starting with a livable neighbourhood actually takes care of people (Good and Vibrant population) And problem if solved at such a scale, it would make possible for people for people from age groups 8-80, to walk, cycle and around safely and comfortably.

Eventually achieving the AIM (I).

CONSIDERING I, II, III, IV (A)New AND IV (B) SAHAKARNAGAR It was one of the various neighborhoods which satisfied the previously mentioned criteria's in (IV A New) Study included existing land use, building use, mobility plan, activity mapping, open space plan, interviews, public participation, infrastructure mapping.

It includes all the possible information to prove potential of area as categorized in (IV A New)

RE-VISITING (IV A) maintaining (IV B) To locate a highly potential site for implementation of any kind of project or policy to achieve (I).

Potentials now considered were: Highly residential community.

A good mix of various land uses.

Probably an old neighbourhood.

Possibly having people from all strata of the society.

A liveable neighbourhood.

Good and vibrant population that is active, concerned, educated, willing to accept change.
